recently watched it, its a seriously weird film wouldnt you all agree?? V. twisted and i didnt really understand it. they all went mad at the end. Share your opinions :)
watch it a few times and you'll see how class it is. it is one of those films that have sub-meanings within the plot and story, that generally seem out of place.
it has a lot to do with man's struggle and desperation in vietnam, and mans' own personal anguish with combat and ultimate self-destruction.
It shows the absurdity and futility of war and its not a 'war is hell' film, but more a story about fatalism and the realisation of the madness of war.
Plus its got some fucking excellent action scenes with big guns and stuff
It is fantastic. Especially the part with the helicopter and wagner in the background.

In a word...Unsettling! More so than say Platoon. I 'spose Full Metal Jacket comes close though.

although i still dont understand it fully, i agree with all the comments you make about it being great. Robert Duvall was good in it as the colonel, and i love the helicopter bit to, i also like it when he says "I love the smell of napalm in the morning... Smells like victory".
Personally i found FMJ funny coz the drill sargent is hilarious... it is unsettlin i suppose when they all beat up pyle and he shoots himself.
The drill sargent is the basis for many of my insults. I don't really find vietnam films unsettling. Perhaps the deer hunter was a little though.

I stand corrected! There's nothing more unsettling than the Russian Roulette scenes in TDH, and how Christopher Walken's character was effected by them.
