View Full Version : EA is catching up

I think that at this point many of us (PES fans) are in agreement that Konami just barly does the minimum each year to put out a new version of the game, and frankly i'm tired of paying for only an updated team linup (which i can do myself)
The latest PES game I have is 2007, because after reading everyone's comments about 2008 I just didn't think it was worth it. I have been waiting for new of 2009 but meanwhile I played the demos for Euro 2008 and PES 2008. As soon as I started playing Euro, I was amazed at the gameplay; it is better than any other PES game i've ever played and nothing like the other EA football games. Then I played the demo for PES 2008 and it was even worse than my 2007.
I think EA has finally catched up (and passed) Konami in gameplay, and of course the graphics have always been superior. Now I wonder what EA has in store for FIFA 09, because I don't see any other advantages that PES games have over FIFA other than the ML and editing mode.
If FIFA can deliver that quality gameplay and a similar ML, I don't think I would even look twice at PES 2009 as I don't think it would even come close.
I might be wrong and this is only my opiopn based on a demo, so anybody that has played the full games can see other flaws.

To be fair, the EURO demo is actually better than the full game. THe full game plays slower than the demo. PES still has incredible ball physics, player interactions, AI, and player models. Still though, EA is doing some good things in their game.
They've certainly done themselves proud with Euro 2008. The demo was great, i personally never noticed any speed difference when i bought the full game on the 360. It's the best football game out at the moment in my opinion. It may not have the club teams being a tournament game but Fifa 09 should be pretty impressive.

ive got both pes 2008 and fifa 2008. ive recently put down pes to play fifa for a bit, and to be honest ive had a lot more fun with fifa than pes. ok, pes 2008 has better ball physics and AI, but the movement of the players in fifa and of course the graphics are ten times better. plus the transfers and season mode are alot better on fifa let alone the amount of leagues you get. ive always tried my best to stand by pes 2008 saying its better than fifa, but recently ive seen my opinions change slightly as im getting bored of pes 2008. i know you were talking about euro 2008 but i dont have that game wich is why ive compared pes to fifa, but by the sounds of it euro 2008 is a better game than pes already and this could be an insight into what fifa 09 has to offer.
They (EA) will never capture the environment that surrounds PES. Just take one look at the 'making of DVD' that comes with PES's manual. That somes it up. A game bred on devotion and love is what PES is and always will be.
I will never understand why some people say this every year because i don't think it's true . EA catching up ? well if the main thing is graphics and licences that u are looking for ok then u are right.
But when it comes to gameplay and if u are really a football fan and if you play football in real life u will never say this.
EA is so far behind that if it means i have to sum up why i say this then u are not even worth having the game in ur console, so please make a real football fan happy and give it to him as a surprise because u just like playing a stupid game with alot of hipe and glamour.
i also played the demo and i was impressed by the rain and the wet player faces and........ nope that was it so i just can not understand why people keep saying that.
where i live people are trying to sell their fifa 08 and i keep seeing the advertisements every day hell i am even trying to sell mine and no one has called yet so i will keep saying it , it depends on what u want from the game .
I know it isn't perfect but it's much better then fifa any day.

i think the argument is that pes 2008 is slipping ad fifa 08 is improving. i still love pes but they need to do something really special this year to make me part with my £45.

No they don't, buy it from 'Game' don't like it? return it and buy Fifa.
PES is far better for gameplay and AI and ball physics.
Especially AI Fifa has always been so easy to win, it's rank.

how cant you see that pes this year has not met anybodys expectations? do you think that this year konami made an improvemet on the last series?
cos i dont, if anything i rekon pes 3 up to maybe 5 were the better ones, and since then konami have just started slipping while EA have listened to their criticism and improved on their game. ok fifa might not be as good but if konami keep going down this road then fifa will eventually over take.

I don't like to argue but apparently you can't read what I say. And for the record, I am a professional football player in my country and have been playing my whole life.
I have been playing football games ever since I can remember, and the first one I played was ISS by Konami in Super Nintendo. In N64 I only never played a FIFA game, until I bought my PS2. The only FIFA game i've owned was 2003 and then i changed over to PES because it was simply better and i didn't mind the no licences, like i said before.
I play no less then ML games a day, and sometimes i even do a whole year in one weekend, so i know this game inside and out and i know every glitch and every little thing that is wrong with this games, and that is why i say that Konami needs to really improve.
Like someone said before, i am saying that konami just does the bare minimum every year to put a new full prce game out there while EA just continues to improve, and yes, the gameplay in Euro 2008 is better than in PES 2008, granted that Euro is a newer game. And i'm only judgeing on the demos.
So go somewhere else with your argument that "real football fans" prefer PES because you are just full of it. I never buy a game before playing it anyways so like ther rest of everyone here i will wait until both come out and see who delivers the better football game over all.

Well to be honest man PES used to bring us quality and realism. That is why i switched from Fifa to PES more than 10 years ago. Fifa back then felt so scripted and boring with the same runs, passes, and goals. Then came along PES with its randomness which to me was a beauty. I could finally be creative and not just single minded. Enjoyed All PESs until PES 2008 dropped and sorry to say i couldn't stand it, even after all the editing I've done to it.
Fifa 08 was a breathe of fresh air, it looked amazing plus the great atmosphere. But then it was sluggish and unresponsive, including other faults. Euro 2008 was faster but we don't want a faster game. Infact Fifa 08's pace is quite right, only the unresponsiveness needs some fine tuning.
I'm hoping Fifa 09 build on Fifa 08 and fix all the bugs and faults, and Konami realise this is next-gen era. Time to move on to next-gen engines and such and give us a better PES in PES 2009.

I bought pes2008 as soon as it came out, since iss it has been the only game that i play until the release of the next, but this year is different. . . . its poor, very poor. i notice someone further up the post wrote the following:
"But when it comes to gameplay and if u are really a football fan and if you play football in real life u will never say this."
What a crap comment. ive just finished playing a game on top player between utd and chelsea, 26 shot s on goal from me and 15 for chels and i won 6-1. . .what kind of game is this. the game is so fast paced and no players have any weight to them. yes the ball physics are better but AI? im not convinced. i bought fifa and although the game is still sh*t the players dont wonder from their positions even though you have told them not to, the keepers dont make ridiculous parries from the wekest shot. . and i have full control over through passes long balls and shot! if fifa improved ball physics, players like ronaldo were more deadly and players rected quicker to commands it would be far far better than pes. . . . . as much as i am ashamed to say it. Games on pes seem to be the same over and over again the same passage of play leads to a goal, with fifa i have to put sum good passing together make some time for my shot and beat a player with a drop of the shoulder just to make a chance. Pes is far to easy and io want to be able to be skillful with players like ronaldo!! Not some lame stepover!
If pes and fifa don't step it up next year i guess ill still be playing pro6 and COD4!
ok you say you play pro football then tell me how can't u appreciate this game every decision you make in attack and defence can change the whole outcome , the way you trap the ball can determine if the opposition can get to it or not , your patience in defence pays off 75% of the time because even when the pressure is at its highest if you keep a cool head just like real football you can get out off it.
you say you know the game inside out, well i don't, because i don't have the time but i do play every game like it's a final and i don't sit in with coffee or thee and grab a fast game before i go to work because that doesn't work this game needs ur full concentration and i like it like that.
everytime i read something like this i give fifa another try because i think too myself i must be missing something this is my PES site and i got to know most off u guys because we play the same game and we all loved it , so if most off u switched to FIFA i think to myself check it out again.
well i played it again for two days and yes FIFA has improved but when u say it's catching up ( hell no ) it's no where near.
a few off you complain about the pace well i think the pace in PES 2008
is just right the pace in FIFA is too slow and the players response is even slower.
again i say u said u play football and still u can't appreciate what they've done here well i just can't understand that. let me add this i've edited the game with statts from pes statts database with statts from guys like PLF , DELPIERO, RED PHOENIX,MILANISTA ETC and it really improves the game.
me and my friends most off them also play football we all agree that PES 2008 is much better then FIFA 08 and still i bought both just to give it a try mostly because of u guys and all the positive reviews u gave the game.
but i can honestly say i do not agree,i also played the euro 2008 demo
and still i like PES better ok .
but hey that's just my opinion so please don't get on my case because off this because some off u sounded a bit irritated let's just be glad that we have the cash to spent and enjoy playing these games.
speeking off cash i am a bitt short on it but i do have enough to buy one game this month so if u guys can help me and give me some advice
which would u prefer and please in short why.
gran tourismo ,grand theft auto or heavenly sword .
I'm getting both this year, but I reckon Pro Evo has lost a lot of fans

if you havnt already got it get call of duty 4, online its better than anything takes up hours!
When you said about having patience in defence, i can run (on top player) with any of my defenders all the way down the pitch and score, its ridiculous, and whilst i cant do that on fifa i still like pes better but theyre both piss poor this year

i also read the good reviews for that game but i just can't seam to enjoy those games that much.
i'm guessing it's like METAL GEAR SOLID and i bought that for ps2 ,played it but never finished it same goes for splintercell but i liked GOD OF WAR and HEAVENLY SWORD looks to be like that( i played the demo) but then u've got all the great reviews for GT5 and GTA so i'm not sure and where i live u can't rent games , u have to buy and if u don't like it that's to bad so that's why i'm that carefull when i buy games.
honestly u can really score with ur defender on PES by just running from one half to the other half (wow)that's incredible.
i never tried it yet but i will. i did score a great goal with iniesta, beating scoles , vidic and ferdinand and then sliding it past van dr sar.
i agree that PES should've been better but hey i'm still enjoying it more than all the games i've got at the moment so that tells me something and yes fifa really improved but they are not there yet atleast let me say they haven't won me over yet.
if I want graphic.. I'll watch a real match... If I want to play for fun, I'll play PES
i'm with u on that because untill now nothing even compares to a real match.

I'm also a Football player, although N0T Professional. But anyways, I have to say that the most "enjoyable" game at the moment is Euro 2008.. However, Euro 2008 is still a bad Football game - The Defensive movements and defensive controls are very bad, too restrictive, too slow, definitely not close to proper defending. Dribbling lacks that natural-intuitive (simplicity) feeling that PES 2007 (or 2006) had. The off-the-ball movement has improved, but still has a long way to go, and the pressure in the middle of the pitch is laughable.
That said, FIFA 2008 and PES 2008 are even worst. And once again, FIFA showed their great ability in ripping people off, they released a crappy football game as "FIFA 2008", and after releasing the crappy debut, they released an improved -at least enjoyable- Football game "Euro 2008". They gave us a good reason to buy their "Euro 2008" game.. FIFA and Konami need to stop doing that, they should show a little more respect to the people who buy their games, and they should definitely -at least- produce a game worthy of the PS3.
By the way, FIFA and Euro graphics are embarrassing, have any of you guys seen the players up close - Thierry Henry is literally black, Cesc Fabregas looks retarded, Rivaldo doesn't haves his face, Luis Figo also looks retarded, Robinho is not even similar to his real life self, the list is endless.. EA Sport's FIFA and Euro look good whenever the camera isn't close to the pitch, all the players look retarded from close range.
On the other hand, Konami's PES 2008 haves some impressive faces, Ronaldo, Riquelme, Nedved, Drogba, and many others. So the bottom line -in my opinion- is that "graphics" do not really make any difference between FIFA 2008 and PES 2008. It is a matter of preference, what would you prefer? An impressive pitch with retarded looking players, or a not-so-impressive pitch with realistic looking players. And regardless of the fact that the graphics are not living up to the PS3 potential, the "gameplay" isn't good either. I'm not expecting much for 2009, the only positive thing I can say for NOW is that Football IS and SHOULD be a million times more enjoyable, interesting, and addictive than either; "FIFA 2008", "PES 2008", or "Euro 2008".

I think PES2008 is a very poor game, what I don't understand is why I have the need to take GTAIV out and give my crappy PES a spin. I cant put my finger on it but there is something FIFA cannot get and that something is what sets the 2 apart.

01-06-2008, 14:18
although i am a critic and in my opinion FIFA as usual was really really crap PES was also kinda crap...PES has this feel about it that even if your sick of it, you have to give it a spin every now and then...ps FIFA is bullocks!
What PES has and FIFA "can't get" is simply that you're used to it. FIFA 08 is not just any FIFA, its gameplay is so deep I can't believe it's not a PES. The problem with that is that you cannot try it "a couple of days" and make a decision. The game deserves to be tried at least a couple of months. How would you treat a FIFA fan that tries PES for "a couple of days" and says it's not good?
I can score like nothing in PES, but in FIFA 08 it took me a long time to actually make a goal (we're talking highest diff. setting here), and when I did score, my goals were very similar. At first this disencouraged me, thinking that there were only 2 or 3 ways to score in this game, as is the custom with EA's title. But then I remembered that I had a similar experience when I switched from FIFA to PES back in '98. I could play rather well, I could even hold my own in ML, but my offensive possibilities were very limited.
Considering the possibility I just SUCKED at the game, even though I could defend myself, which I think is the problem with a lot of people here, I decided to give it another extended go. What I found was that FIFA can be as varied, fulfilling and entertaining as PES, and that despite their initial similarities, playing one of them is a completely different experience than playing the other. Apparently, FIFA is even more fulfilling than PES, cause I haven't touched PES 08 in a while now. Granted though, FIFA 08 is far from perfect, with the issue of responsiveness at the top of the list.
2009 will surely see me buying the two games. I'm sure FIFA 09 will be worth at least an extended run by all of us, just to see what it can offer. It's weird to say this, but the guys at EA have worked very hard and they deserve it, while KONAMI have been cheap lazy asses. The only downside is that getting used to the other title can take a while. You don't dribble as in PES, your don't shoot as in PES and you don't defend as in PES. Hell, you don't even move as in PES. It takes a while to get a hang of it, but there's a very rich game underneath.
I feel a lot of people haven't even tried FIFA, or done so for one or two days, and are just repeating the same stereotypes like a mantra, as if we were still in 2001. Nowadays, you can't say that PES is so much more realistic than FIFA or that FIFA is just the graphics and licenses, because there's more to it than that. Why don't you really give it a go? At worst, you'll have 2 good football titles to choose from.
PS: PSM3 magazine (UK) tag line for FIFA 09 on the cover (June issue): "EA's latest silences its sternest critic...yes, us." Being hardcore PES fans, this magazine's staff has scored PES 2008 much higher than FIFA 08 and Euro 08, so reading that tag line was a bit of a shocker.
And from Official Playstation Magazine: "Whisper it, but we're so impressed by EA's latest that the phrase 'Pro Evo beater' is being bandied around by OPM staff."

I partly agree with you in that EA Sport's FIFA is no longer behind PES, not because FIFA has drastically improved, but because PES has only improved for the worst. PES 2008 is plain boring, anyway you look at it, it's all about the "Pace" and the "Shooting Power" of a player.. FIFA 2008? Its not that bad, but there are still plenty of things to improve; off-the-ball movement, defending, passing and dribbling to name a few.
I still don't see a clear difference between Riquelme's passing, and Cristiano Ronaldo's passing. We NEED more Passing skills (stats). Only one type of "sliding tackle", we should have different types of sliding tackles for different types of situations, and again we NEED more defending skills. I still don't notice a clear difference between players like Riquelme -who are masters at positioning themselves on the pitch- and Robinho (who relies more on his dribbling skills to create space). We NEED a skill for "off-the-ball movement". And finally, dribbling, the dribbling in both games is not that bad, it is actually good for players with average dribbling skills.. However, Robinho, Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Joaquin, and players alike should have better movements, faster and more responsive movements, and their dribbling tricks should be much more effective as well as easier to perform.
But anyways, I gave FIFA plenty of tries; FIFA 2005, FIFA 2006, FIFA 2007, FIFA 2008, I gave them all a lot of time, and after playing them for awhile I always end up with the same opinion - "FIFA sucks, end of story". FIFA just feels like an RPG game, everything is predictable and slow, there are no surprises, you're practically obliged into playing long-balls instead of attractive football, and I could always manage to score whenever I wanted. Honestly, the only thing I enjoyed about FIFA was dribbling through entire defences via the right analog stick.
On the other hand, the old versions of PES were just more enjoyable and much more addictive, it was more about passing and movement, it was possible to defend effectively, you could also play the long-ball style played in the EPL (and in FIFA 2008, PES 2008, and Euro 2008), the dribbling was simple and intuitive, and it had a great feeling whenever you managed to score a goal. This are things that are missing in all the so-called Next Gen Football games.
So Bottom Line is that FIFA 2008 is bad, PES 2008 is bad, and Euro 2008 is a decent football game. By the way, EA Sports has actually done less work than Konami, Konami had to start from scratch, while FIFA just tweaked FIFA 2007. FIFA 2008 is FIFA 2007 with a few -very minor- improvements. This kind of explains why FIFA 2009 is already impressing some people in the gaming world, I suppose EA Sports is actually sorting out the game instead of just tweaking FIFA 2008. I'm not getting my hopes up because after PES 2008.. well, I don't want more unexpected disappointments -but- I really hope someone -either EA Sports or Konami- makes a breakthrough.
