Yeah there`s tons of skins for Windows 95/98/ME/XP etc..I think you need to download a certain program (main file which is in .exe format) and then install that..after you do that then you can download skin themes (which are in .zip file) and load them through that main file..I tried using those skin themes long time ago with my first PC and they really slow down your computer..it takes about 40% of CPU memory..which is bullshit...

It supposed to move, like ripples coming the bottom-left and top-right corners. Stare into the middle and try scrolling a tiny bit pretty slowly. It looks pretty cool when it works.

It does actually, The more icons you have on your desktop the more it has to load at startup so i keep it to a minimum, I know about msconfig as well, but my pc is broke anyway :(

you cannot have more than 5 letters when u rename it.. i remember that much.. it is all with the hex.. and you even have to add spaces, if you only have like 3 letters/numbers you have to add enough spaces to make it 5 characters..

actually ash it does not work.. i tested your theory of having more than 5 characters in your start menu and it does not work... i had to tinker in the registry to fix it.. system restore would not work.. i could not even log in.. so.. yea.. it does not work.. and i recommend no one even try to change their start menu at all unless they know how to fix a computer that will not log in.. and may end up reformatting.. coz it is not fun...

yes.. i did.. it is impossible not to have a backup of your original explorer.exe unless you physically delete it.. are u running sp1, sp 2 or none of them?

Well what I did was if you want it to go abck to normal. Was go c:/windows/ then rename explorer.exe to bin.exe and then rename explorer_bak.exe to explorer.exe, and it went back to normal. And I use SP2, you could have jsut did that in safe mode or what?
I'm not sure what went wrong with you as I did not write that tutorial.

I have executed the procedure to modify the text on the XP start button and it works fine. I did that a week ago.

Today I downloaded Lavasoft’s Ad-aware freeware and ran it.

Being curious by nature I looked at the scanned results before suppressing anything.

I was surprised to find that the shell modification used to change text on xp start button was picked up by ad-aware.

I did not delete it!

I can only image what it would have done to windows if it had been removed.

So I suggest a warning be added to your article to the effect that shell modifications and ad-aware could lead to …. Windows not starting.

I have found your site to be very informative and helpful. However, there is one thing that I believe needs mentioning. I had read before that it was possible to change the text that is displayed on your Start button. I followed your instructions and soon enough, the ‘Start’ button on my XP Pro SP1 said ‘stop’ instead (how clever, right???). All was well until I decided to download the network installer for MS’ new SP2. I ran the installer with all virus scanning software off and updated my machine to SP2. I did the initial Automatic Updates setup and prepared to boot into my desktop. It appeared to be working except my desktop never fully loaded. I got this message saying that Windows Explorer had encountered a problem and needed to close. Blah, blah, blah, you know the drill. So I restart. Same thing. I thought I was in big trouble until I tried ctrl-alt-del. Success! I was able to start a new task (regedit), point my Shell back to explorer.exe, and restart. Low and behold, after I entered my password, my desktop came up and everything was normal. SP2 has worked like a charm ever since.

I thought that maybe it was just something wrong with the update to SP2 and later tried to modify my Shell file again. I restarted and got the same error. I think it would be a very good idea to post an update to the text changing site telling users that if they run the update to SP2 with the modified Shell, their computer will become unusable. It’s really too bad – I enjoyed the heck out of telling Microsoft where to stick their ‘Start’ button…

Thanks, Adam. The bottom line here is that you should revert back to the original explorer.exe file that was backed up in Step 1 of the article. Failure to do so can result in serious consequences.

Make sure your taskbar isn't locked and then simply drag which icons you want to be on the taskbar onto it. Use the dotted bit to allow more icons to be visible.

I use Aston Shell. Quality program. I've only got about two or three of the plugins on there too. You can have loads more shit on, but I like it nice an tidy. I'm gonna go and grab a more recent pic. It's not this PC you see, it's from my other upstairs. This one is just default shit, incase of viruses and stuff. My other baby doesn't get on the net for safety. Too much to lose...

Here's how it looks now. Like I said it's not very different, apart from the wallpaper, and the little winamp control panel (another plug-in) in the top right corner which I designed myself. That's there so I don't have to have winamp on screen all the time. And I think it looks cool.... (not the big silver box, that is actually winamp, just wanted to show what skin I have on it.)

Someone gave it me a while back,if you have san andreas on the PS2 and you put it in the PC and open up the program you can listen to any song or advert from the radio stations on san andreas :D

The FM scout shouldn't effect your patched game,as i've downloaded apatch as well and the FM scout's worked alright ;)

if you have that san andreas program it'll be fine :)
it just reads all the music and etc off the CD and it has it there for you to listen to,so far it hasn't damaged my san andreas disc

It is actually called Orodruin (Mountain of Red Flame) or Ammon Amarth (Fiery Mountain). Commonly known as Mount Doom for obvious reasons.

Niko, I have Windows XP SP1 with some modifications :D
www.deviantart.com for wallpapers (for those who don't know :P)
Then for my theme, it's called Kamino downloadable from www.themexp.org or from Deviant Art, they are both good websites for customizing your desktop :P
Now, the upper bar is from ObjectDock with different skins to match the desktop you use.
Then all those things around the wallpaper are the coolest :D very usefull and look pretty! It's called Konfabulator and it has TONS of widgets! (the little things in the desktop :P)
The ones I use are The Weather, Calendar, Drive Space Monitor, Haiku Generator (the chinese random quotes that change from time to time :D), CPU Mark and Memory Mark (bottom right widgets)
I don't know the websites and I'm in a break now :P so maybe later I'll post them; but you can just google for them, they are very well-known :p
Hope I helped so you can spice up your desktop ;)

To DAZ: Maybe you're using a BMP file, which are around 2MB in large desktop resolutions; if that's the case try changing it to JPG, filesize is much smaller. :)
