Liverpool sign Keane on four-year deal

LIVERPOOL, England (AFP) - Liverpool signed Robbie Keane from England League rivals Tottenham on a four-year deal, a statement on the Anfield club's website said Monday.

The Republic of Ireland striker underwent a medical at Liverpool's Melwood training ground on Monday and the 28-year-old was then given the all-clear to move to Anfield for a fee of 19 million pounds (38 million dollars), rising to 20.3 million (40.6 million dollars) dependent on bonuses.

Keane scored 15 league goals last season and his move to Liverpool could now see him partner Fernando Torres up front with Reds boss Rafael Benitez looking to increase his strike power in a quest to bring the title back to Anfield.

Boyhood Liverpool fan Keane, who has also played for Inter Milan and Leeds, could link-up with his new team-mates on Tuesday in Spain, where Benitez's side are currently on a pre-season tour, and make his debut for the club in Wednesday's friendly against Villarreal.

What does this mean for the Gareth Barry deal....and what does this mean for other strikers who seem to linked with moves away (most notably Kuyt) from Anfield.

This money has been spent better than it would have been on Barry imo but it could have been spent better still on a top wide man.

Worth it's own thread?

Great deal for Liverpool. Proven quality. He will do really well I believe... I wonder if he will take the PENS for Liverpool? A Torres and Keano partnership will terrorize the league and champs league.

I don't think it is. Although this may give me the all clear to make an Oleguer to Ajax thread.

The world must know!

They could've gone for someone better then Keane - 20 Million pfffft i rather have someone like Benzema, Huntelaar, Villa (would've been perfect for Torres) or Bervatov.

Good player and will be more effective on the right then Rocky Dennis. Absolutely ass rapped regards the price though.

If we were looking at a Torres/Villa partnership we could have safely said it may be Liverpools year. It still could be, but they need to get a good partnership going and have a stable defense

we will see.....

You lot are bemused.

I think Liverpool should get rid of Voronin and Pennant maybe Alonso and Finnan and then get Barry

Still i feel it is far too costly for a player who is 28 if he was around 26 it would be ok.

So I'm the only one who, no offence to Barry cause he is quality, would prefer Alonso anyday of the week ?.

Quality player man dunno why we would trade him for Barry.
Alonso > Barry, just, but still.

I'd rather see a winger brought in, like has been said.
Keane can play out wide which is good, better than Kuyt would be, but we can't say Kuyt isn't useful for us because he's came up with alot of important goals I'd be gutted to see him leave.

Barry is Quality, personally, i'd rather have him than Alonso, and good news for Villa is that Barry looks to be staying now.

Gareth Barry isn't that good and Robbie Keane isn't a winger.

Keane has a nack of scoring against chelsea which would be welcoming considering rafas poor form against the top 4.
