Hey people 5th year playing PES, just wondered what people's opinions are regarding whether to use the directional buttons or the left analogue stick during games? Which is better?

I think the new skill format is easier with the analogue but I've used the directional buttons since I could remember...Putting spin on the ball for freekicks seems a bit different with the analogue? Anyone else notice this? Is there actually a way you can put more curl/spin/dip on shots? Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't? Obviously the R2 shot has a little bend but what about 30 yard strikes?

I played the Fifa 2009 a few weeks ago - freekicks are awesome...the dip you can put on corners and freekicks is different class - something i'd love to be able to do with my beloved PES, unless you already can?

D-Pad.

FIFA's freekicks are still bordering on Sensi levels (Assuming you're old enough to understand). Only a handful of players in the world can bend a ball as well as the average players on FIFA.

Haha that's hilarious...listen to yourself smuggin' it off. I know what you mean. You're answer is based on realism...something people need to get over - it's a game.

Smuggin' it off? Sorry mate, not even sure what that means.

If I wanted to play a pure arcade version I'd be using Mario's on the Wii. Personally I prefer a touch of realism. I don't see the fun in being able to score sweeping freekicks with just any old muppet. Just my preference if that's okay.

Pes free-kicks were class on the ps2 games.Nowadays its more about power than technique

Nothing wrong with that at all...I'm just saying, the only thing realistic, in effect, is not to expect realsim because essentially, it's a game - realism and game are completely contradictory of one another. 'Smuggin'...hmm never mind...

Having played football at a competitive level (until injury put pay) I am well aware that PES is not 'real'. I do however feel 30 yard super banana shots by league 2 defenders is beyond the reals of common sense.

For your benefit I shall re quote from my previous post: Personally I prefer a touch of realism

Alright alright, settle down. Don't get carried away grandad, i don't get care how old you are. You're still none the wiser...I'll take you to school so don't waste your time.

To bring us back on topic:

As from day 1 (NES, SNES etc etc. ) I have been using a D pad (Directional buttons)

Playing PES on my PC, a couple of weeks ago I bought myself a XBOX controller for windows. I just can't seem to get used to it. It's very hard for me to do the tricks with the analogue stick compared to the directional buttons. Because of that, I still play PES with a PS2 controller connected to an USB converter. Works perfect ;)

Can't beat the sony pad for footy games. I'm so glad they didn't change it for the PS3 as was first feared.

I think, Fick, if you are saying you can score 30 yard wonder goals with anyone on FIFA, then that's a bit exaggerated, it's a lot harder to score from range than it is on PES. Unless you mean from free kicks, in which case I dont remember trying many free kicks on FIFA, so you may be right.

Anyway, to answer the orignal post, I used to use the D-Pad all the time (much to the amusement of my mate, despite the fact I beat him 8/10 times) but then I played Euro 2008, and of course on that it automatically sets you up to use the stick, with the pad being used for tactics, so I tried it, and I've just seemed to have picked it up.

Just free kicks.

After playing FIFA 09 on the stick I found it too vauge for general play for my liking and spend many an hour cursing the lack of a d-pad option. I guess having always used D-pad (I even used a pad on my old Amiga rather than a joystick for football games) I just find it difficult to adjust.

Analogue stick for gameplay and D-Pad when taking penalties or free kicks.

Think I used to use the D-Pad, but I changed as I found it easier to use the left analog stick.

You can set it on Fifa so you use the D-pad. I've done it, in fact i've set the controls to match Pro Evo's. I got Pro Evo yeasterday by the way. Was wetting myself with excitement, singing a song to myself as i ran into my flat to bang it on. Very disappointed thus far. I'm going to keep giving it time, but i hate the way your midfielders don't come close to give you an option, instead plonking themselves next to the nearest opposition player. And when you do a give a go, the player who makes the run sacks it off after running a few yards. The AI all round is slightly disturbing.

Triggle beef I think that you will come to like the game over time .

To give yourself more options play around with the tactics abit a set the controller support to manual for A/D levels .

You should see the players making all sort of runs if you get your tactics right. They will come short if you make them attack back .

As for the controller I use the left anlogue as it is less painful after 12 hours of playing .

How? I set the control scheme to 'new' or whater it's called so thet the button config mached PES, but it still required stick input for direction...

Have a missed a further option on control settings?

It's pretty easy mate. In the controller config screen, you just swap the left analog stick with the d-pad, meaning you control your player with the d-pad and set tactics with the analog stick.

Back to Pro Evo. So Slat, you're saying that if i make the attack arrows point back they will come towards me to get the ball, rather than running for cover as if i'm kicking a live grenade? Do you do this for your forwards and entire midfield, or just your central midfielders? And i'm not sure what you mean by "set the controller support to manual for A/D levels". Do you mean giving yourself full control over the 5-position bar above the player name? I used to control this years ago but never have in recent times. If this is what you mean, is it good to switch it to defensive when you've got the ball in your own half, to bring players closer, and then bang it on attack when you're deep in your oppenents half?

Yep i agree...

ive used the D-pad for allll the pro evo games, the analogue just doesnt feel right.

When i use the analogue stick it feels as though I'll lose the ball everytime i get it

hold Y ( triangle for ps3) straight after the power bar goes up 4 a free kick or hold A (X for ps3) for closer freekicks

What I usally do is play my defensive very deep with two defensive midfielders I control the manual A/D depending on what team I am up against Bara / Man I might drop it one because of Ronaldo/Messi/Tevez/Eto all those players are very hard to win the ball off of .

Now for attack you could just use lmf/rmf and but them both attack arrows then have a ss or amf attacking back and forward with your striker have two attacking arrows one to the left one to the right .

This all might seem pointless but when playing online I have got great results against the best sides . Learn how not to press x and just follow a players movement when defending . When you have the ball you would see the players move into good positions for the pass.

Btw I have two defensive arrows on both Dmf and they give your defenders great support . I hope this helps .

D-Pad all the way. I also find it just as easy to perform a 360 on D-Pad and it's quicker to perform the other tricks. Never feels like I'm in complete control with the stick.

Cheers boss. i will give this a try. I'm gonna go for 4-3-3. 2 DM's with arrows pointing backa and an AM with Arrow's pointing side ways and back. We'll see how that works.

I use, and always will use, the D-pad for PES.

In Madden, for example I use the left analog stick...
