Roy Keane has left his position as manager of Sunderland Football Club, BBC Sport understands.

Keane has hinted in recent weeks that his future may not be certain hinting that he could leave the club.

Sunderland are 18th in the Premier League and have lost five of their last six games.

The former Manchester United midfielder took over at the Stadium of Light in 2006 and led them to the Premier League in the 2006/07 season.

More to follow. Gutted. I thought he was doing a great job. :(

To be honest, it's not much of a surprise. I knew he would quit rather than get sacked. At the end of the day, he's spent a lot of money, bought loads of players but hasn't taken them further. He's still got a lot to learn before becoming a top manager.

EDIT Keegan for Sunderland.:ninja:

After days of speculation following their 4-1 home defeat by Bolton, Roy Keane has now walked out on the mackems.

Facial hair disagreements are believed to be at the centre of the dispute between the Action Man model and his smooth -chinned Chairman.

An RSPCA spokesman said:

"this is a great day for the canine population of the region, who need live in fear no longer".

Keane is believed to be a contender for the vacant Huddersfield Town job, having shown interest in the position when he heard their nickname was The Terriers.

PS: Talking himself up to anyone will listen as a candidate to take over at the stadium of plight is none other than Sam Allardyce, the currently unemployed former Toon boss and ex-mackem player.

He seemed to be doing all right at the start of the season and made some decent signings.

That's football.

Could he move to Newcastle?

That's football. The way they reacted when they beat us was a big issue iyam, they once again treat it like they'd won the FA Cup and that was their season over and done with.

It does look that way.

I think Alan Curbishley will be the next Sunderland manager.

Thing is, Keane made a big point of saying his signings had to go be going there because they wanted to play for Sunderland under him. Given they've made such a pledge where's this going to leave them with confidence and whatnot?

Couple of months time they could be in deep shit imo.

Did bring in some good signings but also spent a lot of money badly. Anton :lol: still cant believe we got £8m for him.

Did you really? I didnt think he had anything to offer for a left back. We havent had a decent left back for ages. And this Ilunga guy always looks like hes gonna handle the ball

He wasn't exactly spectacular but I thought he was solid enough and consistent and I said he was our second best performer last year and the fans must have generally agreed as he got voted in as second.

They've certainly done worse than George in the market anyway, Ferdinand was the highlight. I like Faye at Stoke, think he only cost about £2m as well and I know I'd much rather have him than Anton, Stoke fans can look at those two signings and feel very chuffed.

He made too many average signings, and payed way over the odds for most of them. He was excellent in his first season in charge, it's a shame he hasn't done better.

it's a shame he hasn't done better.

Agreed. Was hoping he'd do really well. As a leader on the pitch he was fantastic & I felt he'd make the switch to manager with relative ease.

Still think he'll make an impact in his own way in the years to come though.

:smug: Tell me about it. Abdoulaye is quality, oozes class.

On the other hand, I think it's excellent and fantastic.

Definitely Maybe

Hello folks.

I'm surprised by the timing of this but not that he has gone. He was his own biggest critic and had strongly doubted himself this season, particularly since the Northampton game at the end of September. It was becoming increasingly obvious that he wasn't going to sign the contract and that needed sorting one way or the other asap. The uncertainty was overshadowing the club and he had to either sign or go.

Personally I thought he'd walk after the West Brom game a week on Saturday.

Outsiders will look at the money spent and the league position, but he's done more for the club off the field than any other manager in my lifetime - including Reid. The mentality of the club has completely changed - he was building for the long term but has fallen short.

His tactics and team selections were baffling at times and he's wasted a fair chunk of money on the likes of Halford, Prica, McShane, etc. Ultimately managers are judged on results and results have not been good enough.

Best of luck to him though, it's a sad day. I'm not sure who we can attract to replace him. Niall Quinn is the most important man at the club though, not Keane.

For the record, Anton Ferdinand has been a cracking signing, £8m very well spent. The change of scenery has settled him down.

Kenny Jones, Craig Gorden, Djibril Cisse and Steed Malbranque are quite good signings then you get the likes of George McCartney, Teemu Tainio, Anton Ferdinand, Rade Prica, Michael Chopra. Just isn;t good enough Roy even though i think your a good manager and will be back with a top club in the future.

That's another negative comment about McCartney. Definitely Maybe what do you think about him because I really liked him at West Ham and was sad to see him go?

I thought McCartney was decent at West Ham. Nothing special but did his job.

I say the main reason he got sacked is that he got a team with decent players which he spent on them much, but couldn't get the result right.
