Nothing fancy, I just want to be able to access the media on my desktop from my laptop and visa versa. Also use the desktop printer from my laptop, but I'm getting nowhere!?

A little help please?

Using Vista on both.

Cheers

Single crossover ethernet cable between the two (a straight ethernet cable won't work). They're cheap - got one for £5 last week.

File and printer sharing enabled, IP address 192.168.0.1, subnet mask 255.255.255.0 specified for that network adapter on the host machine (Network Connections -> Right-click the network -> Click on Properties -> TCP/IP -> Click Properties). The laptop should have all network settings set to automatic. Once the network is picked up, you can force the network connection from the laptop to 192.168.0.1 to match the settings on the host if it gives you peace of mind knowing both are explicitly set the same way.

This is the exact way I've got my PS3 accessing the internet via my PC and my PC acting as a media server to the PS3.

Does that come in English? :/

Btw, I'm trying to avoid wires as the laptop is downstairs where the desktop is up. Both are wireless.
