Right, I'm considering creating a partition for windows xp or the windows 7 beta on my mac but don't have the foggiest in how to go about it. If anyone has some information that they could share I'd be extremely thankful.

Why are you doing that Sully?

You need to use Boot Camp, I'm sure it'll talk you all the way through the process. Its part of OS X.

To be honest with you Papa, I don't actually know why. I guess I just want it just incase I program I need to use isn't available for mac etc

May sound stupid but what are the differences between the 32bit and 64bit windows and how will I know what is better for my system. I really dont know anything when it comes to computers

The difference between 32-bit and 64-bit for the average user is simply that a 64-bit OS can take advantage of more than 3.25GB RAM. A 64-bit OS is usually, if not always, unable to run 16-bit programs (the ones written back in the Windows 95/98 days) but has advantages when running 32-bit and 64-bit processes. A 32-bit OS is limited to a total of 4GB memory - RAM and graphics combined.

Never install 64-bit XP as support for it was basically non-existant. If you're installing Windows 7 Beta, I installed it last night (it seemingly defaulted to installing the 64-bit version) and I've not fully tested its compatibility with 16-bit programs.

As Sweey said, it is Boot Camp.

This site has a short video telling you how to go about it.

what would be the point of this?

Certain programs are not mac compatible so if I used 10gig of my HD for windows I would be able to use certain programs. 4od is one I want to use as it's not mac combatible

So I've decided that I'm going to do this today. I have already backed up my mac onto my external HD incase any problems arise. I was just wondering, if I was to use an illegal copy of windows, will it cause any complications?

Nope, just be careful of what you update as with any illegal version.

Except you won't be using an illegal one, will you? :>

Cheers mate, I wouldn't dream of using an illegal copy though. Was just a hypothetical question :/
