View Full Version : Favourite Songs
Don't know if we already have a thread for this.. so I thought it would be cool to have a thread for posting your favorite Songs, or what you consider to be the greatest songs of all time.
I'm always interested in hearing all sorts music, and therefore "discover" new songs that are great but cult, or not so cult.
I will name a few personal favorites of myself, but will ignore the "greatest songs of all times" as I don't like to label music.
This are some of the songs that I can remember right now:
- The Smiths, "There is a light that never goes out".
- The Smiths, "Asleep". (reminds me of Harry Potter, don't know why)
- Pink Floyd, "Comfortably Numb".
- Andrea Bocelli, "Volare" (the Latin version of "Time to say goodbye")
- Andrea Bocelli, "Vivo Por Ella".
- Led Zeppelin; "Stairway to Heaven".
- Led Zeppelin; "Kashmir".
- Led Zeppelin, "Dazed and Confused".
- Guns and Roses, "Sweet Child".
- Guns and Roses, "November Rain". (version with Shannon Hoon)
- Guns and Roses, "Estranged".
- Guns and Roses, "One in a Million" (Demo version, 1987)
- Guns and Roses, "Paradise City".
- Elton John, "Someone Saved My Life Tonight".
- Elton John, "Rocket Man".
- Queen, "Bohemian Rhapsody".
- Circo, "Ser Salmon". (album; "En El Cielo De Tu Boca")
- Circo, "Amelia". (album; "En El Cielo De Tu Boca")
- Circo, album "El Manjar de los Dioses".
- Queensryche, "Silent Lucidity".
- The Beatles, "Yesterday".
- The Beatles, "Let It Be".
- John Lennon, "Imagine".
- Charles Manson, "Look at your game girl".
- Manu Chao - all his music is equally awesome.
- Robi Draco Rosa - album "Vagabundo"..
- Robi Draco Rosa, "Amantes Hasta El Fin".
- Robi Draco Rosa, "Cruzando Puertas".
- Bob Dylan, "Lay Lady Lay".
- U2, "The Hands That Built America". (at the end of the "Gangs of New York" film)
- Édith Piaf, "La Vie en Rose".
- Alanis Morissette, "Uninvited".
- Billy Joel, "Piano Man".
I'm sure I'm forgetting plenty of them, and I'm also sure most of you have heard most of this songs. But hopefully some of you listen to more cult music, which is something that I'm looking forwards to.
- Guns and Roses, "One in a Million" (Demo version, 1987)
Immigrants and faggots? :erm:
I'll post a few later.
EDIT: Songs that is, not immigrants and faggots.
Problem is I like far too many songs from a wide selection of genre's & find it hard to whittle the list down to a manageable number... I'll try and put a few together later when I've a little more time.
Immigrants and faggots? :erm:
I'll post a few later.
EDIT: Songs that is, not immigrants and faggots.
"One in a Million" is a really memorable song that unfortunately had some excessively raw and generic lyrics that left too much for interpretation. Needless to say, it was very controversial, most people misinterpreted the song completely.. something that the Writer of the song (W. Axl Rose) deeply regrets, but felt was necessary for the integrity of his art.
A song that is brutally honest and personal, with generic lyrics, yet still manages to come off as remarkable. It's remarkable for the reasons that make it both positive and negative at the same time.
And it can also be awkward and annoying, for obvious reasons.
I like it, because it is honest expression in your face, it is verdant, it is ignorant, it reminds me of plenty of memories.. like growing up, being crazy and angry for things that you don't fully understand yet. Blaming it on somebody else.
I think that underneath all the offensive lyrics and all that, this song is about Those "One in a Million" that make life difficult for Millions of others, and the frustrations that the Millions on the lower end of the chain feel. Resulting with them releasing their frustrations on easy targets such as "immigrants" or "faggots" or "police men" or "small-town white boys".
In other words, it's about "immigrants" and "small-town white boys" having a go at each other respectively. Or about "niggers" hassling "naive white boys" into buying whatever it is their selling, to their own benefit or expense, whilst someone else is benefiting from another human being's expense.
It's a reference to the Hypocrisy of Humanity, to how human beings "lives go to shit because their own hypocrisy finally consumed them".
It actually makes you more aware of Racism, and just how fucked some people are. It's purposely offensive for clear reasons, maybe it started as a humorous comedy, but it changed along the way.
And it's really weird but kinda logical at the same time, cause "One in a Million" is a very Personal Portrait, it is Axl's song, perhaps one of the most (if not The most) accurate songs in describing Axl Rose as a person. Not everyone will Identify himself with this song, most people would not be "ok" with screaming the Lyrics out loud, because it's more personal and open to interpretation.
To be completely honest, "One in a Million" isn't a personal favorite of mine.. but I find it very unusual, and that's why I included it on the list.
* One in a Million Lyrics:
"But it's been such a long time"
"Since I knew right from wrong"
"It's all the means to an end, I"
"I keep it movin' along"
"You're one in a million"
"Ooh, you're a shooting star"
"You're one in a million, babe"
"You know that you are"
"Maybe someday we'll see you, Oo"
"oh, Before you make us cry"
"You know we tried to reach you"
"But you were much too high"
"Radicals and Racists"
"Don't point your finger at me"
"I'm a small town white boy"
"Just tryin' to make ends meet!!"
* This are just some of the References to the Lyrics, which are mostly in accordance to Axl Rose personal experiences and feelings:
The "You're one in a million" "Yeah, that's what you are" lines have been explained by Axl:
"The thing with "One In A Million" is, basically, we're all one in a million, we're all here on this earth. We're one fish in a sea. Let's quit fucking with each other, fucking with me".
The "Maybe someday we'll see you, Oo" "oh, Before you make us cry" "You know we tried to reach you" "But you were much too high" lines seem to be a reference to Axl's own feeling and experiences:
"It's finding some way to break the chain. I'm trying to fix myself and turn around and help others. You can't really save anyone. You can support them, but they have to save themselves"
"Because that's the truth underneath all of it. It's the underlying message. We'll do a certain song because we want to express that anger, get that feeling out. "We did it, okay, now I can deal with the person that I just called an asshole." You know, that's healthy. But that's not how the world works. The world doesn't want you to do that"
"If I sound a bit self-righteous, I'm not. I'm just pissed off FOR not AT, people. l don't like seeing people miserable, and I don't like watching people kill themselves while they're telling me they're happy"
"I watched almost everyone in this church's lives go to shit because their own hypocrisy finally consumed them".
* This is Axl Rose (the writer) himself on the song:
"I'm on a fence with that song. It's a very powerful song. I feel, as far as artistic freedom and my responsibility to those beliefs, that the song should exist. That's the only reason I haven't pulled it off the shelves"
"Freedom and creativity should never be stifled. Had l known that people were going to get hurt because of this song, then I would have been wrong. I was definitely wrong in thinking that the public could handle it"
"The racist thing is just bullshit. I used a word (nigger) that was taboo. And I used that word because it was a taboo. I was pissed off about some black people that were trying to rob me. I wanted to insult those particular black people. I didn't want to support racism."
"The Bible says, "Thou shalt not judge," and I guess I made a judgement call, and it was an insult. The racist thing, that's just stupid. I can understand how people would think that, but that's not how I meant it"
"The last verse has always been ignored. It has a line that says, "Radicals and racists, don't point your finger at me." Then it says, "I'm a small-town white boy."
"I was saying, "Look, yeah, I'm this naive, confused, small-town white boy, and I have a lot of problems, so racists, don't point your finger at me and go off and say I'm one of you, or whatever. And radicals, don't you be going off on me and saying I'm on your side or against your side or whatever"
"When I say "I'm just a small town white boy," I'm just saying I'm no better than anyone else I've described. I'm just trying to get through life, that's all. It was originally written as comedy"
"It was written watching Sam Kinison during one of his first specials. I was sitting around with friends, drunk, with no money. One of my friends had just gotten robbed for seventy-eight cents on Christmas by two black men"
"The thing with "One In A Million" is, basically, we're all one in a million, we're all here on this earth. We're one fish in a sea. Let's quit fucking with each other, fucking with me"
"There's a lot of people who have chosen to use that song ("One in a Million"). However that song makes them feel, they think that must be what the song means. If they hate blacks, and they hear my lines and hate blacks even more, I'm sorry, but that's not how I meant it"
"Our songs affect people, and that scares a lot of people. I think that song, more than any other song in a long time, brought certain issues to the surface and brought up discussion as to how fucked things really are"
"I don't perform it, because I think it's too dangerous and I don't trust people with the song. I don't trust the audience with the song. I don't want to do "One in a Million" on stage and know that there's a lot of people out there in the crowd who are prejudiced and it's gonna help fuel their fire"
"It's enough to handle the fact that it's on a record and people use it for their own anthems for their own prejudiced-ness"
"But l think that "One In a Million" has done some good, too. People have thought about what racism means In their own life by being pissed off at Axl Rose, and made decisions and even acted on those decisions, and many were positive. There's a lot of negative ones too, but some were positive. It forced people to speak when they heard it"
"They had to take a side on how they felt about these issues. That's a strange amount of power for a song to have"
That pretty much sums "One in a Million" for me..
The Album version is supposed to be better, but IMO The Demo version is the better one. Nobody else has The Voice that he used for the demo, and the defects gave it an edge that the album version doesn't haves.
There's a good-sounding one on "youtube" -- "Guns N' Roses- One in a Million Demo (1987)" by "luke189".
P.S - My apologies for the uncalled for rant.. just didn't want to give the impression of being some ignorant racist fuck.
Problem is I like far too many songs from a wide selection of genre's & find it hard to whittle the list down to a manageable number... I'll try and put a few together later when I've a little more time.
That's cool, as long as all of them are personal favorites of yours that's cool. I'd like to see the list so I can hear the songs, maybe I'll discover a few more songs that I'm not aware of now.
It would help for whenever I run out of music when I'm working on my designs and other related personal things.
Maybe you could classify them per Genre.
Oasis - Live forever
I love it in interviews when Noel talks about this song, he always says pretty much the same thing...Something along the lines of
"When we finished writing this one, we were all just like, fucking hell, this is the one, this is the best song we've ever fucking written" :D :D

Metallica - Nothing else matters
I just love this song so much man, its got everything ; Great lyrics, great composition, and a fucking kick ass solo.

I put in two not so obvious videos aswell, so you can take a look, if you don't know the songs :D But you really should :erm:
The Verve's Bittersweet Symphony has long been my favorite. That being the top, just under it there's a load of Zeppelin and Beatles songs, some T.Rex, Free Bird, Hotel California, bit of Miles Davis and Coltrane, Iggy Pop (The Passenger, Search and Destroy), The Who (Eminence Front, I Can See For Miles etc.)...and a lot more.
Maybe you could classify them per Genre.
Too lazy!!!
However, had a quick think over lunch and came up with the following:
*Black Crowes - Ballad in Urgency (Superb chilled out rock)
*Black Crowes - Descending (From the same album, wonderful piano intro)
*Rolling Stones - Sister Morphine (Haunting. My fave Stones track)
*Jethro Tull - Aqualung (Just awesome. A more commercial and approchable bit of Tull)
*Iron Maiden - Murders in the Rue Morgue (From first album & best singer... best of Maiden for me)
*Creedence Clearwater Revival - Bad Moon Rising (First heard on American Warewolf in London. Never forgotten)
*Creedence Clearwater Revival - Through the Grapevine (Superb cover version of the Miracles original. Loooong solo is just fantastic. CCR at their best.)
*Frank Zappa - Po-Jama People (I love virtually every Zappa track i've heard, but this one in particular stands out. Zappas mellow voice and some awesome guitar work make for compelling listening. you must try this. It's on the album "one size fits all".)
*Blues Brothers - Sweet Home Chicago (Another cracking cover, aided by some of the great R&B/Blues and soul performers)
*The Chips - Rubber Biscuit (I once had someone flag me down after they had heard this coming from my car stereo!!! It's that distinctive. Again, worth a listen.)
*JJ Cale - Cocaine (The original and best version.)
*Seasick Steve - Doghouse Blues (Saw him on Jool's Hogmany a couple of years ago. Absolutely fantastic. Distinctive style, a must for anyone who likes blues/bluegrass)
*Miles Davis - Moon Dreams (Simply Miles Davis. What more needs to be said?)
*Rondo Veneziano - Notle Amalfitana (An odd one this. RV are a blend of classic orchestral, rock and synth. Strange but beautiful. The album this track is from (Veneziano 2000 If I recall) really needs to be listened to in full as the tracks meld together.)

At the moment, my favourite song of all time is 'In This Home On Ice' by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. It's just so uplifting.
Too lazy!!!
*Creedence Clearwater Revival - Through the Grapevine (Superb cover version of the Miracles original. Loooong solo is just fantastic. CCR at their best.)
What a track it is. Too often overlooked, in any list.

My favourite acoustic version of Live Forever. It was the song that made me like Oasis. My favourite is Don't Look Back in Anger. I really like the version that Noel is playing currently, where he uses capo on the 4th fret.

Will Young - Evergreen
I agree it's a great song. It's vastly underrated because of how Will Young got his big break.
I agree it's a great song. It's vastly underrated because of how Will Young got his big break.
I love it how he won Pop Idol, went to number one, became a national hero and then announced he was queer.

If I ever heard that song, I don't remember it.. but great song and great voice. Thanks for that. Heard it like 5 consecutive times, sounds like a keeper.
There's an 11 min version that's even better than the short one.
A song that I always seem to go to on my ipod is 'Crack Music' by Kanye. Not anything special but ive still kept playing it since its release. Obviously there are a few more but im way too lazy and too early to post anything long.

Cool..
In the first thread I posted a band named "Circo". They have 2 albums that are well worth listening, "En El Cielo de tu Boca" and "El Manjar de los Dioses".
In particular, the track "Ser Salmon" in the "Cielo de tu Boca" album. I think that track has the best beginning I've ever heard, very emotional.
I tell you this because you like a vast variety of music. So I think you should give "Circo" a try, this band is relatively unknown in Europe, as far as I know. Though it wouldn't make much sense to listen to their music if you don't understand Spanish.
And even if you don't understand Spanish, you should at least look for "Circo, Ser Salmon" on youtube or something. At least to hear the Music at the Beginning.

I don't quite get this...Surely music is music, whatever language its in...
I regulary listen to Andrea Bocelli, and he sings in italian
He's literally amazing...If god had a voice

I might just do that! My main passion is rock/metal so I have a good appreciation for not understanding a word that's being sung! (Check out Fudge Tunnel or Godflesh, you'll get the picture!) It's the music and the sound of a voice that'll get me more so than the lyrics. Some years back I had the pleasure to listen to an Africal tribal band, it was just mind blowing. I didn't have a clue what they were singing about, but the emotion in the voices and the harmony were just out of this world. I only regret that I cannot remember who they were.

Completely True..
I guess what I was trying to say is that he won't enjoy it as much. But like you say music is music, you can understand where they are coming from even if you don't actually understand the lyrics.
Nirvana springs to mind quickly, I neither understand WTF Cobain was saying, plus his lyrics where placed in incoherent manner, but you could get their point.. in some songs.
It actually upsets me a little to have made such a stupid comment, nonsense really.
And yes, Bocelli is Bocelli, you said it.
Metallica - Master of puppets
Oasis - Whats the story morning glory

Hmmm... It's difficult to make a list cos I like loads of different music genres, but here's a few I like:
-Estelle - "1980"
-Modest Mouse - "Float On"
-Rolling Stones - "Gimme Shelter"
-M.I.A. - "$20"
-Louis Armstrong - "Cheesecake"
-Phoenix - "1901"
-La Roux - "Fascination"
-The Chemical Brothers - "Salmon Dance"
-Federico Franchi - "Cream" (Robbie Riviera Remix)
At the moment, my favourite song has to be "Wile Out" by Dj Zinc ft. Ms Dynamite. It's bloody awesome. :D
Some of these songs might not be everyone's cup of tea... But I like 'em.
Don't really agree with most of your choices but Gimme Shelter is one of my favourites also. Great song.
Coma: (Slash / Rose, Guns N' Roses)
Hey you caught me in a coma
And I don't think I wanna
Ever come back to this...world again
Kinda like it in a coma
'Cause no one's ever gonna
Oh, make me come back to this...
world again
Now I feel as if I'm floating away
I can't feel all the pressure
And I like it this way
But my body's callin'
My body's callin'
Won't ya come back to this...
world again
Suspended deep in a sea of black
I've got the light at the end
I've got the bones on the mast
Well I've gone sailin',
I've gone sailin'
I could leave so easily
While friends are calling back to me
I said they're
They're leaving it all up to me
When all I needed was clarity
And someone to tell me
What the fuck is going on
God damn it!
Slippin' farther an farther away
It's a miracle how long we can stay
In a world our minds created
In a world that's full of shit
Help me
Help me
Help me
Help me
Bastard
Please understand me
I'm climbin' through the wreckage
Of all my twisted dreams
But this cheap investigation just Can't stifle all my screams
And I'm waitin' at the crossroads
Waiting for you
Waiting for you
Where are you?
No one's gonna bother me anymore
No one's gonna mess with my head no more
I can't understand what all the fightin's for
But it's so nice here down off the shore
I wish you could see this
'Cause there's nothing to see
It's peaceful here and it's fine with me
Not like the world where I used to live
I never really wanted to live
Zap him again
Zap the son of a bitch again
Ya live your life like it's a coma
So won't you tell me why we'd wanna
With all the reasons you give it's
It's kinda hard to believe
But who am I to tell you that I've Seen any reason why you should stay
Maybe we'd be better off
Without you anyway
You got a one way ticket
On your last chance ride
Gotta one way ticket
To your suicide
Gotta one way ticket
An there's no way out alive
An all this crass communication
That has left you in the cold
Isn't much for consolation
When you feel so weak and old
But is home is where the heart is
Then there's stories to be told
No you don't need a doctor
No one else can heal your soul
Got your mind in submission
Got your life on the line
But nobody pulled the trigger
They just stepped aside
They be down by the water
While you watch 'em waving goodbye
They be callin' in the morning
They be hangin' on the phone
They be waiting for an answer
When you know nobody's home
And when the bell's stopped ringing
It was nobody's fault but your own
There were always ample warnings
There were always subtle signs
And you would have seen it comin'
But we gave you too much time
And when you said
That no one's listening
Why'd your best friend drop a dime
Sometimes we get so tired of waiting
For a way to spend our time
An "It's so easy" to be social
"It's so easy" to be cool
Yeah it's easy to be hungry
When you ain't got shit to lose
And I wish that I could help you
With what you hope to find
But I'm still out here waiting -- Watching reruns of my life
When you reach the point of breaking -- Know it's gonna take some time
To heal the broken memories -- That another man would need Just to Survive

Had not payed attention to that song before... but nowadays I think it's one of the better written Rock N Roll songs that I've heard, in my opinion a very underrated song.
Hearing "Coma" without understanding the words is what makes it a remarkable song for me; because, it can sound like party music, it can sound cool... but the underlying message is very uncool, which makes a great song IMO.
I'm very interested in the type of song that only true hardcore fans find great, as opposed to more popular classics like "Stairway To Heaven" or "Bohemmian Rhapsody", etc, etc.
Can anyone post a couple of underrated Rock N' Roll songs??
Mountain People - 008
iO- Jeton

I just love this song

The Smiths: "Headmaster Ritual" -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgNfTx9pGzA
I'm obsessed with the beginning of that song. If I was in charge of a music group, I would base my sound around that whilst at the same time also adding something original.
I know someone will think "well, that's The Smiths, that's how they sound..." -- still -- there's something about this particular song and about that sound in the beginning of the song. I think it's a great song for a Documentary Film.
A top 5
Motorhead - Overkill
Metallica - Overkill
Overkill - Overkill
Grave Digger - Overkill
Bulldozer - Overkill

Squire, how do you embed youtube videos? I'm too retarded to get it to work.
copy and paste the set of numbers/letters that follow "v=" on the video url.
(spelt wrong in purpose, delete the 'r')

[youtube ]code which comes after v= in the youtube link, usually a load of random letters[/ youtube]
^Basically that but without the spaces within the brackets.
EDIT: Ah, Rainey explained it simpler.
