Ok guys and gals, I've been DJing for a little while now as a passtime, now
I think I'm about ready to slowly try and turn professional. The only
stumbling block at the moment is a NAME.
Superficial as it sounds, I want to think of something, preferably one-word,
that's catchy and original. But at the same time it'd be nice for something
that meant something, not just a word that 'sounds cool'.
I was gonna use it as a sub for my surname to create a stage name,
i.e. Matt Something otherwise known as DJ Something
any ideas? anyone out there who uses a stage name with ideas for inspiration?
ta.

muscul man? - as in like mussle man?
Thing is when it comes to DJ names, you have to try and avoid sounding like a dickhead when you choose one.
I've got quite a lot of DJ friends and most of them prefer to have their first name in their stage name, so for example DJ Daryll, or DJ Kev or whatever.
I even asked one of them why they chose that particular name, and they said it was to get further recognised, as opposed to having a name like DJ Fire, or DJ Iceman. Its logical that people are going to remember your first name, so they can put a face to it, rather than thinking 'Oh what does DJ Iceman look like again bla bla'.
You've gotta avoid at all cost these type of names :
Iceman
Fire
Bolt ------------ Makes you sound like a fucking pokemon.
Something catchy, original, sounds good, and means something to you maybe, like an aspect of your personality?
Don't use Muscularmatt either. If I heard of a muscularmatt DJ'ing a rave, I honestly wouldn't go :D

@ arshavin - yeah i was thinking something to do with wolf or wolves
cos thats where im from, possibly
@ kev - yeah muscular has always been my nickname, but i didnt
want to use that cos i think the only clubs that would want me would
be the gay ones (i'm not homophobic, just dont want to be typecast!)
@ dale - your right on, i'm looking for something that sounds cool
and memorable, but not pretentious. you know, higher up than
just DJ Matt, but not quite in the realms of DJ Goldendecks Super
Awesome Spinmaster McMassiveCock. your onto it with the personality
tho, i think i'll ask all my freinds to try and honestly sum me up in one
word, see what comes out the most...

A name isn't a stumbling block. Or at least it shouldn't be.
The simple fact is that the name means very little - it's the quality of your sets that people are going to remember. Until you gain a reputation - and let's hope that you do - no-one is going to turn up to a club at which you're DJ'ing because you've got a cool name.
Once you gain a reputation, people will then begin to be drawn by the fact that you're DJ'ing there and might recommend it to a friend, because of the DJ. Chances are, they still won't remember your name. For this reason, it's important to secure a regular set at a number of venues. There'll be a lot of "There was a really good DJ playing - he's there every week."
In an ideal world, you'll eventually get to the stage where people do start to recognise your name and associate a particular brand of high-quality set with your name. By this point, your name will be what people call you by, but what it actually is won't matter - they'll associate you with your music.
You see, at no point does the name actually influence what's going to happen. Don't get hung up on it - the only thing to avoid is picking a name that is already taken either by a high-profile DJ (by which I mean anyone people listening to your music are likely to have heard of) or which you've yourself seen at the types of raves you're going to be DJ'ing at. This is a fairly short-term consideration.
If you had a second DJ with you, I'd recommend you call yourselves The Vinyl Frontier.
EDIT: But, the problem with thinking of something catchy, is it's likely to have been done already. "The Vinyl Frontier," I've just remembered, is the name of a mixtape that DJ Fase and Abdominal released some years ago.

DJ Supercalafragilisticexpialadoc ious
DJ Spin Doctor "He has the cure to get you up on your feet!" or "His tunes won't give you a headache!"
You spin records right, pity your not actually a Doctor then it would be minted!
DJ Wolv ?
DJ Molineaux ? not sure if that's the right spelling
You could always try and not use 'DJ' in it, see how far that gets you.

yeah thats what im going to do, just find a word and call myself
Matt Something as a psuedonym. cos im from wolves,
the city motto is 'Out of darkness, cometh light' so I was thinking
something to do with lighting, fire, matches, petrol, i dont know...?
Ignition might sound good, but theres probably about a thousand 15
year olds already calling themselves that...

DJ Max Power (or Matt Power)
That city motto could be quite good as a tagline for your shows
Like when they put on the posters "DJ whatever, out of darkness cometh light" or summat
Nothing to do with Fire man, unless its really inventive lol *See my first post lol*

i dunno. i was just running through my head 'things that light' u know
lighters, mathces, matchsticks etc and then thought yeah, have
matches in there theres alot of creative opportunities with posters
and graphics and shit.
doing a whole music video stop motion with matches would rock
wouldnt it? or has someone done that...?
