Ozzy Osbourne Sues Tony Iommi Over Ownership Of Black Sabbath Name
According to the New York Post, Ozzy Osbourne has filed a lawsuit against his Black Sabbath bandmate Tony Iommi, claiming that Iommi illegally took sole ownership of the band's name in a filing with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Osbourne is suing Iommi for a 50 percent interest in the "Black Sabbath" trademark, along with a portion of Iommi's profits from use of the name.
The Manhattan federal court suit also charges that Osbourne's "signature lead vocals" are largely responsible for the band's "extraordinary success," noting that its popularity plummeted during his absence from 1980 through 1996.
Ozzy's suit follows one filed by Iommi in December 2008 against Live Nation. In that filing, Iommi claims the concert giant sold merchandise bearing the band's logo, despite the 2006 expiration of a merchandising deal, reportedly worth nearly $80 million. Soon after that agreement concluded, Iommi reclaimed the band's trademark.
Iommi's suit argues Live Nation continued to sell more than 100 items of merchandise featuring the band's likeness, name and logo, despite the receipt of cease-and-desist orders from the guitarist's camp. Iommi's suit seeks damages in the amount of three times the profits from the merchandise sales, plus a halt to the Black Sabbath product sales.
Iommi and Geezer Butler have both said some less than kind things about working with Osbourne in a new interview with Decibel magazine. The pair recently completed a new studio album as Heaven & Hell, the post-Ozzy version of Sabbath featuring vocalist Ronnie James Dio, and Butler said that working with Dio was much easier than Osbourne. He explained, "Ronnie's a songwriter in his own right — he's got tons of ideas. Whereas Ozzy . . . in the old days, he'd come up with a vocal line and I'd write the lyrics. Ronnie is 100 percent involved in both the musical side and the vocal side, and he writes his own lyrics as well."
Butler added that Osbourne didn't take him seriously as a songwriter, saying, "If we were with Ozzy and I came in with the killer riff of all time, Ozzy wouldn't even think of doing it because I'm not the guitarist and that's the way he thinks . . . That's why it was so bloody hard to write anything."
Butler said about Heaven & Hell's debut CD, "The Devil You Know", "If we'd written this album with Ozzy, we'd still be working on the first track."
Iommi added that there was a sharp difference between the singers live as well, saying, "It was great being with Ozzy on the road . . . but with Ronnie it's a lot different, because we go out and we know exactly what we're gonna be doing. With Ozzy, we didn't really know. It was touch and go sometimes on some of those early shows, whether he was gonna turn up, if he'd be able to sing, if his voice was gone, or what. We'd have to cancel shows, which Geezer and myself really hated. But with Ronnie, we've never canceled a show."
Heaven & Hell will tour Europe later this spring and summer, with North American dates scheduled for August.
Ozzy Osbourne is currently working on his next solo album.

Hmm. The 'Signature lead vocals' argument has some validity, but still I argue that it was Iommi that defined the sound, definitively.
I have to side with Iommi on this one (not just because i'm a guitarist myself :ninja:) but solely crediting the bands success on the lead singer is a farce. Yeah the bands popularity droped massively when Ozzy left, but still you've gotta remember that it was Iommi, not Ozzy, that come up with most of the riffs that feature in Black Sabbath's tunes. Including some of the most recognisable riffs in rock/metal history in Paranoid and Crazy Train.
I was just going to make a thread solely about this piece of news, but while writing I thought there should be a general 'Music news' thread, so it is now so.
I'm with Iommi on this one too. For me, he was the real star of Sabbath. I wouldn't be surprised if Sharon put Ozzy up to it. Not like he needs the money.
In other news, James Blunt = Cunt.
Sad news, I thought they were good friends..
Phil Spector sentenced to 19 years
PHIL SPECTOR has been jailed for 19 years for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson.
The legendary music producer was found guilty last month of shooting Ms Clarkson at his Los Angeles home in 2003.
Spector, who pleaded not guilty to the charge, was given a sentence of 15 years to life for second-degree murder and an additional four years for personal use of a gun.
The presiding judge at the court in Los Angeles said Spector must serve at least 19 years before being eligible for parole - by which time he will be 88 years old.
Spector sat motionless in court in Los Angeles, his eyelids drooping slightly, as the sentence was read out.
His lawyers said he would appeal.

Big news for those of you who know who he is. For those who don't, he was a music producer who worked with the likes of Tina Turner, Ike Turner, The Ramones, John Lennon and I beleive hes in the rock and roll hall of fame.
I remember reading about this in 2003 and thinking nothing of it, but now its been brought back up again because hes been sentenced.
He'll be 88 when he gets out
I remember being really shocked at the time. One of the top producers in music history yet capable of that.
Also, I think he looks like Sven with big hair.

I watched a documentary on Spector the other year. He had a dodgy upbringing. I don't remember what his parents did, but it wasn't a pleasant childhood. He's been weird ever since. I remember a story of him holding a gun at someone in a recording studio, for not following his orders? A very disturbed man.

What's the latest on Satriani suing Coldplay? I would look but I'm feeling incredibly lazy.
This situation with Coldplay, have they just taken the riff without his consent?
It was something to do with a part of Viva la Vida (not sure if it was a riff, or just a general part of soloing) that was apparantly stolen from Satriani's song If I could fly.
Nothing new has come out, mainly due to Coldplay's management, and how they never talk to anyone but Coldplay
It's the lead in Satriani/vocal melody in Coldplay and chord progression. I do notice some similarities. Satriani is one of my favourite guitarists, I'm not sure but can understand his argument.
UvB9Pj9Znsw
And for a more in depth look:

Yeah he is one of the best, and I can understand where he's coming from, but do Coldplay seem the type of band to say, 'yeah, that sounds good, lets add it into one of our songs'. I doubt it.
Also hearing Papa Roach's new song (Has anyone else picked this up?) that they have a guitar part that sounds exactly like the piano part in Keane's Everybody's changing.
Quite amusing really if you think why the hell are Papa Roach borrowing from Keane :D
Edit : The Papa Roach song is called Lifeline.

I'm sure a lot of artists/bands get inspiration from other work and, almost unknowingly, use it to inspire their own ideas. Hell I've even done it to some extent with some of my stuff (one of the demo's I sent you, the chords/chord progression is the same as a Jimmy Eat World song). Thankfully, no one owns a chord or progression, but when you blatantly rip off a melody, that isn't right.
But, with the millions and millions of songs that have been written, it's inevitable that occasionally you would get artists coming up with the same ideas as another, even without hearing the other's work.
Had a listen to that Papa Roach track. Whilst the riff is similar, it's played entirely differently to how Keane used it so it's not as contentious as Satriani and Coldplay's dispute.
Id say nearly 90% of Hip Hop instrumentals is sample based, but it is quite uncommon to hear people pissing their pants over it.
Well most of the original artists are credited for it.
Iggy Pop Slams Smashing Pumpkins And Limp Bizkit
Iggy Pop has expanded on comments he made about the current state of rock music, singling out Smashing Pumpkins and Limp Bizkit for criticism.
On a recent YouTube video to promote his new jazz-influenced album, "Preliminaires", he railed against "crappy music" by "idiot thugs with guitars".
Now the singer has revealed some of the acts he was referring to.
"Anyone from Smashing Pumpkins to – what's the one with Fred Durst?" he said in an interview with The Sun's Something For The Weekend section, referring to Limp Bizkit.
"There are a million billion of them," he added, "and people think they're gods, man."
He added that the video message he released was unscripted.
"I took great pains not to think first," he said, "because the thing I can't stand is a rock star who thinks he's got brains. They're always so damned dull!"

Smashing Pumpkins? I hope he was high...
Hmm, speaking of similarities here are a few I've found.
1) Between Angels and Insects by Papa Roach is very similar to Iron Maiden's Prowler.
2) Warm Machine by Bush and a Sugarcult song.
3) Hurt's Aftermath and some Nine Inch Nails song.

Woman Fined millions for file sharing
A US woman has been fined $1.9 million (£1.2 million) for music copyright violations in the USA after illegally sharing 24 files online.
Jammie Thomas-Rasset, a 32 year-old mother of four from Minnesota, has to pay the money to various record labels after she shared music by acts including Green Day and Sheryl Crow, reports BBC Newsbeat.
The case is the first time a file-sharing case has gone to court in the USA. Jammie Thomas-Rasset had previously been to court for copyright offences, but her trial ended without a verdict.
A spokesperson for the Recording Industry Association of America said that the companies due the payment were willing to settle out of court for an amount much lower than the $1.9 million total.
Thomas-Rasset called the verdict, handed to her by a Minnesota jury, "kind of ridiculous".
On Tuesday (June 16) the UK Government published a report, "Digital Britain", outlining measures of tackling illegal file-sharing in Britain.

I don't think its as good as Take to the Skies, its a lot different. Shikari seem to think its better, but then they would as its their new album.
Just take the first single they released from it, Juggernauts. Its a lot more 'trancy' and faster than most of the songs on TTTS.

Lil Wayne has postponed his forthcoming European shows, expected to kick off in Paris on Thursday, due to illness.
The rap star was set to play seven dates in Europe over the next 10 days, including the Roskilde Festival in Denmark and two dates in London.
An official statement said the musician had been forced to cancel the concerts due to “doctor-mandated rest”.
“Lil Wayne extends an apology to his fans for the short notice of this postponement,” a statement said.
“But he looks forward to returning for the performances and visitation with his fans,” the statement continued.
Fans have been advised to hold on to their tickets and wait for details of revised dates.
The shows were due to take place in Paris, Roskilde, London, Amsterdam, Liege and Thurgau in Switzerland.

Jimi Hendrix Named The Greatest Electric Guitarist Ever
Jimi Hendrix has been voted the greatest electric guitar player of all time by the readers of Time Magazine.
Music critic Josh Tyrangiel compiled a list of his top ten, which included legends such as Jimmy Page, BB King, Chuck Berry and Eric Clapton.
However, Hendrix was given the top spot on the strength of his unique fusion of genres such as blues, rock and psychedelia.
"No-one wielded a guitar with as much charisma," Mr Tyrangiel commented.
Hendrix, who died in 1970, was followed in the list by former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash, who was described as a "remarkably precise player".
Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones was also included in the top ten, partly because he has written more memorable electric guitar riffs "than anyone else in rock 'n' roll".
Mr Tyrangiel highlighted the hook to (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction as a good example of this, along with the riffs to Start Me Up, Gimme Shelter and Jumpin' Jack Flash.
Biggest :faceplm: ever for the following bit, and anyone who guesses why can have some positive rep.
The full top ten was as follows:
01. Jimi Hendrix
02. Slash
03. B.B. King
04. Keith Richards
05. Eric Clapton
06. Jimmy Page
07. Chuck Berry
08. Les Paul
09. Yngwie Malmsteen
10. Prince

Some people would even disagree with Hendrix as number one. I know a guy (who's a guitarist) that took some sort of guitar course, where, as well as playing, he learnt to make and repair guitars. According to him, most of the elite guitarists actually think that Hendrix is undoubtedly the most iconic guitarist of all time, but not necessarily the best.
Oh i'd definately agree with that. But I suppose you have to take into account how they mean 'best'. Is it like Technique/Talent, or more along the lines of Influence/Oringinality.

Is there an acoustic guitar list somewhere? There was an all-time all-guitar list once, perhaps by the Rolling Stoned, where you had John McLaughlin in the 30-40 spot somewhere, yet Django and Wes were not in the bloody list! The latter could be top 20 if not 10.

I don't see how Prince is on that list, as a guitar player.
Prince was a great soloist on the ol' electric. Probably noted on that list due to his writing ability, but he was a great player no doubt.
I'm just astounded how Slash is number 2 on that list. It looks ridiculous when people like Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page below him.
And how Santana isn't on there is beyond me :/
And the likes of John Frusciante, Joe Satriani, Stevie Ray Vaughan and many more.

Jack White seems to have established a career making disappointingly average records that he gets away with because he's a 'genius' and everyone is prepared to acquiesce to the disappointingly average records in the sure and safe knowledge that there must be another Elephant just around the corner, even though The White Stripes made that album six years ago and it's been a case of diminishing returns ever since. Maybe it's time to accept that Jack White is not a genius, just a bit of an oddball who is quite good at the guitar and yelping but who is unlikely to make another really great record now he seems determined to spread his talent thinly across as many bands as possible and we should all just move on and find someone else's music to hysterically hype out of all proportion.
If Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil in exchange for the blues, Eric Clapton must've been forced to use his house as collateral since there's no trace of a soul in his clinical, soporific and vastly over-praised guitar expertise. Other than a few nice tunes in the 60s, with the band Cream, and Derek & the Dominos' evergreen Layla, there's been a very long career of unmemorable, technically proficient, noodling tedium. Even giving him plaudits for introducing Bob Marley to a wider audience (with his cover of I Shot the Sheriff) doesn't make up for 45 years of music that primarily appeals to accountants who dream of owning a motorbike when they retire.
Not sure if posted elsewhere already:
"It's with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.

Bon Iver announces details of second album
Four years after Bon Iver emerged from a Wisconsin cabin with one of the 2000s' most celebrated records, the forlorn folkie has announced his second album. Featuring pedal-steel, saxophone and a children's choir, the as-yet-untitled disc will be released in June.
It hasn't been an easy process, recording the follow-up to For Emma, Forever Ago. "Somewhere along the line, I forgot how to write songs," Bon Iver's Justin Vernon explained to Rolling Stone. "I couldn't do it anymore with a guitar. It wasn't happening." Whereas his debut was recorded in broken-hearted obscurity, Vernon's critical and commercial success increased the pressure for new Bon Iver material. Instead of sitting alone in a dark room, the singer went into a studio – and called some friends.
"I brought in a lot of people to change my voice – not my singing voice, but my role as the author of this band, this project," Vernon said. Although For Emma was mostly a solo affair, Bon Iver has generally toured as a band. For these new songs, Vernon brought in sidemen such as pedal-steel guitarist Greg Leisz, and sax virtuoso Colin Stetson, who has backed Arcade Fire, Beirut and Tom Waits. "I built the record myself, but I allowed those people to come in and change the scene."
Alas (or hurray), Vernon doesn't seem to have rung Kanye West, one of his principal distractions over the last 12 months. Vernon was an unlikely contributor to West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and he has assisted at several of West's recent, epic concerts. In the break between Bon Iver albums, Vernon also released records with the indie groups Volcano Choir and Gayngs. "The whole Gayngs thing has knocked down so many doors for my brain," Vernon admitted last week.
Bon Iver's new album will have 10 tracks, each inspired by a different place. Perth, named after the Australian city, is a "Civil War-sounding heavy metal song" with martial drums, choir and "wailing guitars". Minnesota Wisconsin lays Stetson's bass saxophone over Vernon's finger-picked guitar, and the album closer, Beth/Rest, is "definitely the part where you pick up your joint and relight it".
Bon Iver's last release was the 2009 EP Blood Bank.
Loving the new Strokes album.
This.
Literally everyone I know who has the new Funeral For a Friend album is saying its brilliant. I've never liked them personally, but I can see the attraction.

The Beach Boys' Smile is quite possibly the most storied lost album in rock history. The album was stalled in 1967 by sonic mastermind Brian Wilson's nervous breakdown, and its songs were heavily bootlegged in the ensuing decades. Wilson released a much-loved, reworked solo version in 2004, but all sorts of issues with record labels and band members prevented the official release of the original Smile. But now, Billboard reports that Capitol is finally planning to release The Smile Sessions later this year.
According to Billboard, Mark Linett, who recorded and mixed Wilson's 2004 Smile, and archivist Alan Boyd are co-producing the release, which will be available as a download, a double-CD set, and a box featuring four CDs, two vinyl LPs, two vinyl singles, and a book by Beach Boys historian Domenic Priore.
Although no release date has been set yet, and previous plans throughout the decades to release Smile have fallen through, EMI exec Bill Gagnon assures Billboard that "it's coming out," saying that all of the band members and associated parties have given their support.
Linett and Boyd are working to construct a version of Smile that's as close as possible to Brian Wilson's original vision, with the album proper taking up one CD or three sides of vinyl, and outtakes claiming the rest of the space. In a statement given to Billboard, Wilson says, "I'm thrilled that the Beach Boys' original studio sessions for Smile will be released for the first time, after all these years. I'm looking forward to this collection of the original recordings and having fans hear the beautiful angelic voices of the boys in a proper studio release."
'tis just one of many identical articles, so a swift google search should suffice if you're looking for information, however it's still rather early doors as there's no release date, but it will be this year.

Most certainly. Just a while ago I didn't really care for the Beach Boys, but Surf's Up from the aforementioned (unfinished) album has definitely stuck in my head, as well as Good Vibrations, so yeah, it might just be something real good. Possibly.
They have some real good tracks man, great for like road trips and chilling in the sun man. A great summer band.
Taylor gang or suck muscularmatt's wife's left tit.
Blink-182 have postponed their entire UK and Ireland tour, which was due to take place this summer.
Blink-182's statement reads: "It is with heavy hearts that we have to announce our planned 2011 European summer tour has been rescheduled.
"When we booked the tour last year, we were confident that we would have the new album out before the summer. Turns out we were mistaken as the album is taking longer than we thought and won't be out till later this year."
It goes on: "We hoped we would have some new songs to play rather than do another 'greatest hits tour' which you all saw last summer. The three of us are working very hard to do what we set out to do when we re-formed, get a new Blink-182 album recorded."

Oi lads, been listening to a lot of indie music lately what are some good new bands coming down your end? Stuff with guitar(s) drums and bass...no electro MGMT stuff.
GO!
Young Guns are pretty good. Not your typical indie stuff like The XX or Marina and the Diamonds or whatever, but a bit heavier. Probably more rock actually, but I just thought i'd reccomend them to everyone as they're quite good.
I downloaded Young Guns album 'All Our Kings Are Dead' but couldn't really get into it.
I'd recommend
American Football - American Football
Bombay Bicycle Club - I Had The Blues But Shook Them Loose
Best Coast - Crazy For You
The Maccabees - Colour It In / Wall Of Arms
Bad Books - Bad Books
Manchester Orchestra - I'm Like A Virgin Losing A Child
The Shins - Oh, Inverted World
Warpaint - The Fool

right so poped down to ye olde record store and proceeded to buy Manchester Orhestra - I'm like a virgin losing a child and Mean Everything to Nothing and British India - Guillotine.
I really like the first machester orchestra album (esp that Wolves song) and havent really had a proper listen to the 2nd album. BI is good ive liked them for a while and havent gotten around to buying their album, for those who havent hard a listen to them i suggest it.
I also like Young Guns, really good rock stuff, similar mould to Rise Against if i were to compare it to anything.
Will give the rest of the suggestions a try shortly.
I watched the rockumentary on the Foo Fighters last night. Back and Forth I think it was called.
It was really interesting man, a really great watch. I love these type of programmes, they're probably my favourite kind of television, and to learn all about the Foo's was great in itself.
I didn't realise that Taylor was so close with Dave. And I also didn't realise the Foo's have been about for so long man, like pretty much after Dave split from Nirvana, they started up. Some of the videos of Dave fucking about were excellent, as were the videos from the open auditions they held to recruit a new guitarist.
Really interesting show and i'd recommend it to anyone really.
I saw most of it. Never really knew they had that many problems/issues within the band, though I'm not a massive Foo's fan, still have most of their albums.
I liked how Grohl explained some of his song writing ideas, and saying he always has a drum beat in his mind whilst thinking of songs.
Yeah. I would have been gutted to be the former drummer. Grohl essentially forced him out the band. I was wondering why he didn't do the same with Taylor, but then I remember him going on about them being on the same wavelength and that so that explains it I suppose.
I love how they have all these different personalities, but they're not primadonna's at all. Well...maybe Pat was
I would have liked to see more interaction with the RHCP's but they sort of just skipped over that chapter I guess. I liked how it ended with that show at Wembley, gave good closure for the programme.
Also, at the very end where Grohl said something like, if he had known they would be that big, he wouldn't have called them Foo Fighters because it's the worst band name ever

How do you rate Beach Boys, Mjällharth? I've got Pet Sounds and to be honest, apart from a handful of tracks, I wasn't too impressed by it. It's good to have in the background, but I'm in no rush to buy anymore of their material, partly considering that I have their hits on various compilation CDs.

Well, for most of their career they were not an album band in the sense that their LP's are quite patchwork in quality, so a competent and big best-of compilation would indeed do the trick. I'd say in the ~1966-1971 period there were a few exceptions though. However, I've heard both the Purple Chick bootleg and Wilson's 2004 re-recorded version of SMiLE and come to the conclusion that it's Wilson's musical masterpiece (credit to the great lyricist Van Dyke Parks as well). So, whilst I'm no huge Beach Boys fan, I am a fan of this particular album and thus I'm real glad to see the original session material put together and finally complete the album.

The Black Keys are a seriously good band. Dan Auerbach has one of the best and unique voices of the past 10 years for sure. They definitely deserve the praise/hype.

I felt like the Black Keys were hidden for years, but danger mouse as a producer changed it all. Their songs are now on commericials, in video games, used consistently on the radio as intros to the next segment, etc.
they changed overnight but to me they are still that old band.

You comparing RHCP to the Black Keys?
RHCP - talk about hype - they have been all hype since after 1991; they used to be trend setters but they have seemed to fall into the one-ingredient band after Blood Sugar Sex Magik. The fast paced action broken by the airy refrain, then back to the pace.
They are like the McDonalds fast food of music anymore. but don't get me wrong, I still eat at McDonalds.

somewhat comical how David's roundhouse kick has been replaced with sliding across the floor on slick boots. he looks good all trimmed up though. Jump used to be played every single morning on the school bus for a year. every morning.
The Weeknd decided to let go of this unreleased track, “Our Love,” recorded back in 2009. The song is outside of the Toronto singer’s drugged-out and chilling R&B, inhabiting a more loverman persona. Producer T-Minus gives Abel Tesfaye a pure pop song that emphasizes every lyric. No word on what project this was originally for, but check it out below.
