Tell you what Jon, it’s that time of the year again. Yup, Konami have released the latest code of PES2010 to the press, and here at the bright lights of PESFan towers we’ve managed to get our grubby little mitts on it for your benefit. Oh happy days.

As always when trying a new build of PES for the first time, I headed straight for Exhibition mode. What better way to test the ins and outs of a new code than by reliving that most classic of world football matches - West Midlands Village vs. East London.

The first thing that struck me about the game was just how hard it was to run with the ball now. Granted, every time I play a new version of PES there’s always that little adjustment period, but I was completely beyond all redemption. Every time I tried to dribble around a player I came unstuck, it seemed almost impossible. Even faster members of the squad like Ashley Young could only run a finite amount before being thwarted by a member of the Hammers defence. Before I knew it, I was a goal down inside 10 minutes. What on earth was I doing wrong?

Several games later - it hit me.

I was playing PES like I always had. A general rule of thumb I’d previously employed was a few long passes to a member of my team on the wings, sprint for a while, cut in and shoot. Probably about three or four passes in total from receiving the ball. This sort of thinking failed me utterly in PES2010.

As soon as I realised what I was doing wrong and started to actually pass the ball around, the game opened itself up to me. It felt more realistic, goals actually took…effort. There was no bolting around seven men and planting the ball easily in the corner of the net, these were worked build ups and felt genuinely satisfying.

Mind you, I was hardly playing with world-beaters (Steve Sidwell excluded), so next on the agenda was Barcelona vs. Manchester United. As you would expect with a higher quality team, it was easier, but the dynamics were still the same. Even Messi wasn’t able to just buzz past players like he was some sort of mutant fly.

One of the reasons for this is that changing direction at speed is no longer painfully easy. The new turning animations ensure that the pace of the game slows down when trying to dodge past a defender, and although this movement feels unnatural and weird at first, when it clicks - it really clicks. It’s something I ended up missing when going back to an earlier version of PES. Although you can still gradually change your direction while running with the ball, 2010 made me want to cut down on the easy ninety-degree turns I'd got so accustomed to, instead opting to pass.

The AI also seems to play a part, with both your team and the opposition providing much sterner challenges to work around. From personal experience, it felt the AI was far more competent at covering gaps in its defence, and would eagerly close me down at the earliest point. Goalkeepers too seem to be more skilled, and in my opinion managed to position themselves and cover goal much more successfully than before. There was still the occasional unwelcome spill or unnaturally acrobatic mega-save, but overall I felt they were a definite advancement.

The new Cards and Team Style systems are an interesting addition, and I found combining them both results in quite a variety of games panning out. The changes are subtle, but they are there, and I'll be curious to see how people use them differently as time goes on. One point of note was that I could only find twenty-one different cards (with two even being allocated for goalkeepers), but I should mention this was only by investigation of Master League at the start of the game, so don't quote me on it.

http://i32.tinypic.com/153wjf5.jpg

Penalties are another area in which Konami has tweaked for 2010, with the idea being that how you take a pen now lies in a) how much power you give the ball and b) which direction and how much or how little you point the analogue stick. However as of writing this the system seems to be either too sensitive, resulting in penalty after penalty being blasted miles high and wide, or not quite finished yet. Out of about twenty penalties taken I only managed to score two using the new system, although this may just be down to my lack of skill. I actually found it was a more successful tactic to press no buttons at all, as after a time the computer automatically takes one for you and usually scores with a minimal of fuss.

The animations show real promise at this stage, and are already a step above previous instalments. Even with a fair percentage of them yet to be included, they still look fantastic, smooth and as genuine as I’ve seen in a PES game. Injured players even hobble around the pitch when they aren’t being called into action.

I regret to inform I'm not able to comment on the game's new 360 degree movement control, as this is a feature that has apparently been left out of the Xbox version's design due to 'technical limitations of the hardware'. We are informed that this feature will be available on the Playstation 3, but it seems odd that Konami have left out any increase in running directions at all for Microsoft's console. It would have been nice if there were now even, say, sixty angles instead of sixteen, but there you go. Perhaps It's something the makers are looking into for the near-future.

It's worth mentioning that the overall presentation is a big step-up, even in this preview build. The early lighting effects look brilliant, the menus feel slick and player faces have seen a ridiculous level of improvement. Having said that, some lesser known players from smaller clubs can still resemble beings from an alien world, but for the most part even they looked more like their real-life counterparts than in 2009. I think it's safe to assume the player faces are still a work in progress, you can tell that a lot of the teams in the game haven't been properly dealt with yet, so hopefully it's still on the to-do list of Konami's efforts.

http://i31.tinypic.com/727yjd.jpg

Areas of the audio have also been tweaked. It was great hearing my fans jeer the visiting team if they had too much possession of the ball. Jon Champion and Mark Lawrenson return to their seats as commentator and co-commentator respectively, with Lawro continuing in his tradition of making sarcastic comments at me when I’m at my lowest. The overall commentary doesn’t seem noticeably different at this point, but it’s difficult to say at what stage in 2010’s development any new lines would be included.

Master League on the other hand has evolved considerably and now includes proper team budgets, coaches, athletic trainers scouts, youth teams and more. You can change the way the league is organised; do you want it to be structured by goal difference after points or head-to-head results? It’s up to you. There are some interesting improvements, and I’ll be discussing these in much more detail in a special Master League report tomorrow.

Unfortunately the much maligned Become A Legend has not seen a similar overhaul. Apart from the general gameplay improvements implemented in PES2010, the mode itself hasn’t changed noticeably, which I found a bit troubling. I can only hope that BAL is scheduled to be upgraded closer to release date, because in my opinion it’s something that showed a lot of potential when it debuted in 2009.

Overall, I think 2010 is showing a lot of promise. but is PES2010 a return to form? Personally I think it could be. On the other hand, in the same way beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, playability is in the eyes of the player. But for by money, it already presents a good, solid game of football, with only minor glitches preventing it from being the best I’ve played in a long, long time. With Konami really under the spotlight to make this year's PES the best ever, I've no doubt most of these will be ironed out in the coming weeks.

the big announcement cant be 360 as this would be unfair on 360 users, however i am pleased that it is in the ps3 version. I like the way players hobble around during gameplay, it was these little animation that made pes on the ps2 so enjoyable, it is positive preview, but like he says, beauty is in the eye of the beholder

That xbox thing he wrote stood out the clearest in my eyes!!! I have an Xbox360 - but if 360 movement is only for the PS3, I just might not buy the game... The overall game sounds great though!

A bit ironic: No 360 movement for the Xbox360

Does the crowd make any noise relevant to action on pitch? Yes. Depending on if you play a home or away game, the overall fans will react accordingly. If an away team has the ball for too long they will begin to get jeered, with the home team getting more regular cheers. Same goes for goals/fouls/pen appeals/etc. What’s the situation with selecting kits? Like PES2009, the team is restricted to only 2 kits each and different elements of the kits are not interchangeable. Do a player’s stats change when being placed in different positions? Yes. The players overall ability number will drop depending on if you play him out of position. Play a striker in CF position and he might have 76, move him to LB and it might drop to 27. Do skill cards give a player a big advantage? The cards are quite subtle in their use, a player having a few skill cards does not drastically increase the advantage of that player. They’re more like special traits than special moves. Can you still use the D-pad for dribbling? Yes. You can use either the D-pad or analogue stick.. Can you score from distance easily? No. Opposition teams will provide cover and defend much better than before, meaning shots from distance usually just results in a loss of possession or a shot off target. It’s still possible, but it isn’t easy. Are there adjustable camera angles No, camera angles in the current build are the same as PES2009 How often are ‘pinball-esque’ situations?I would say they can still occur but not with the same regularity as before, as opposition defenders are much better at dealing with too much space. Do different teams start with different budgets? Yes. For example playing as Stoke gave me an 8m budget, whereas Everton were given 80m and Man Utd 200m. Have artificial barriers for throw ins been removed? Yes, players tend to jostle for position when receiving throw ins now, as no magic barrier appears around a player. Have you seen any new commentary? Commentary appears to be the same as in PES2009, although this may be changed at a later date. Have players standing like statues after a corner or free kick been fixed? It certainly wasn’t as noticeable if it's still there. Will manual keeper be brought back? Konami have said that in the final version of the game manual keeper should have been implemented How many cards are there in the game? I counted 21 cards in Master League mode in total. I'll post a list of these later. Can you change the goalkeeper gloves? Not that I noticed. How does the penalty system work.By holding down one of the directions and holding x, you can alter the power and height of penalties manually. This is the theory, anyway, but the realisation needs a little work. Have goalkeepers improved their overall positioning. Goalkeepers intelligence and positioning does seem better, they seem more aware of the areas at threat than in previous games. Give examples of different brands on offer as sponsors.Described as ‘Spanish Insurance Company’, ‘Canadian Beverages Company’, ‘French Security Company’ and so on. These have proper names and come with different benefits depending on how big the club is, 5m/1m sponsorship deals etc. What about sponsorship clauses?Usually cancellation clauses are in effect for the bigger deals, such as fininsh no lower than 4th place/lose no fewer than 5 home games in a season. There are also win clauses, such as 100k for a home win. Tell me about the youth teams.Every master league team starts with the same group of youth players (including PES legends like Castolo). They tend to be around 16 to 19 years of age, although at some points players were generated who were 15 or 20. These players can be signed to professional contracts at any point. Can players like Messi and C. Ronaldo ease past players like in 09.No. Players like these are obviously more skilful, but even they can’t just dart round the team anymore. They’re much more useful, but not invincible. Will 360 degree movement be in the game? Yes, but Konami have stated this is currently only on the Playstation 3 version. Do you still have the overwhelming feeling of the cpu assisting (hindering) you?Personally I didn't notice it as much, if at all. The auto-responses seem to have gone, and Konami promised to remove these anyway. Has the pass pathfinding system for passes been reworked? Passing seems far more accurate with regards where you directed the pass to go in 2010. However passes will not always find their targets if the player has a low skill in passing. What are walls like? You can now add two more players to the walls for extra defence with the trigger buttons. You can also remove these, but you cannot remove players already in the walls from the beginning. Is challenge training back? Not at time of writing. Have they changed the way the goal nets behave? Net's seem to be less loose in 2010 but still don't seem to be as tightly strung as most professional world nets. Are there any German teams in the gameThere is no specific German league however both Champions League and Europa League are licensed this year (consoles only) and should account for a few German teams being in the final game. Apart from the big star players, how to smaller players look? Do they have generic faces?Smaller players at bigger clubs look great, such as Rafael/Fabio, although obviously aren't quite in the same league as someone like Rooney. Some teams clearly haven't been touched yet, such as Everton, whose players all have quite generic faces. In Master League what are players values like.Player wages and “market value” currently appear to be the same thing, which accounts why someone like Yakubu's market value is only around 1.4m. These figures are still slightly off, but tend to be the sorts of things ironed out by the team in the last few weeks (same goes for player stats) I'll be updating this Q and A as the days go on, so keep checking back for new answers.

I don't really care about no 360 movement on the Xbox 360. I always get PES on PS3 anyway.

Hope PES2010 is going to be the best PES so far.
For me PES6 was and still is the best PES game ever - I still like playing PES6 on the good ole PS2. :)

And hopefully the Edit Mode will be better. It was'nt bad on PES2009, just make it slightly better like in PES6 too.

And I think i'm right when I say there will be trophies on PES2010? Because Playstation announced that all games released in and after 2009 will all feature trophies - So woooo! Even better.

This looks to me like the best PES since PES6. The graphics, player faces, the master league and the cool menus - It is awesome!

PES 2010 has 360 just not for the d-pad. Same with PC.

News are really promising..
I'm a lil dissapointment that they didn't implement camera tilting yet.. I wish to have it on final build..
PS3 is the home of PES series.. I'm glad to hear that PS3 version has 360 movement, bur it's not fair to have such an attribute in one console and don't have it on the other...

^That wasn't clear. The ps3 will get 360 movement in analogue + d pad, while Xbox 360 and pc will get 360 movement also but with analogue only.
And also, CAMERA TILTING AGAIN??????? When playing cards, sliders + 360 movement is available???:shocking:

but they like it, im sure it will have the personal touch of PES. I like the wind blowing the shorts and players hobbling during gameplay. Just out of intrigue, can EA still promote fifa as the only game to have 360 movement on next gen

Fifer
17-08-2009, 13:28
well obviously they can't.

What muses me at the moment is that ign claim to have played the build with 360 movement in, where as PESfan said it's not in the build they played. I'm assuming it's exactly the same build so I'm also asuming IGN are misinformed. Either that or the placeholder animation they talk about confused PESfan? God knows.

Guys dont you find it very odd that the game has somethings that others dont...

pc wont have CL and Europa league
360 wont have 360 movement

why cant they work on the game for all aspects at once....just seems really gay the fact that there is diferent aspects on different machines

360 WILL have 360 movement, only on the analgoue stick and not the d-pad, if you dont use the analogoue then tough , its pes2010 now not iss or something you have to move.

says you kid...from what i read i gather this is a messy game with views never going in any direction....with all reviews it comes down to the opinion of the reviewer but in pes 2010 the reviews are so worlds apart its like konami let them all play different games or versions of the game....really lackluster

I stopped using the d-pad when the PS2 came out, if people want 360 movement on the Xbox 360, then they will just have to learn how to use the analog if they are that desperate for 360 movement.

Sorry to sound blunt about it.

I have to agree , I don't see how come people still use d-pad , analog just feels much more natural to move around.

dpad is too stiff on xbox anyways. i still use it for PES but on FIFA the analogue works fine so i am sure i can adjust.

he says no efforts been put into BAL, personnaly i hated that mode, wheres the fun in playing training match after training match barely getting a touch of the ball. they would simply need to implement a feature like FIFA has where you press a button to call for the ball and no matter where you are they will try and pass to you. it can be abused by forcing silly passes and conceding possession but if your playing sensibly it works well. the AI in PES are always content knocking the ball around backwards and BAL really suffered for it. oh well the ML is where i spend all of my PES time, BALs a general failure and online hasnt been worth mentioning in the last two outings, so im just glad the ML has been given some TLC

Loving the images of the stadiums and the lighting and weather effects, the more realistic looking the better and its looking good so far! Always wanted an option to have a misty, cold november champions league match rather then it being dark but perfect conditions all the time! I want to know more about edit mode! and they have said the bundesliga will feature but with fake teams, please don't tell me the players for all the german teams are to be fake aswell?

they would simply need to implement a feature like FIFA has where you press a button to call for the ball and no matter where you are they will try and pass to you.

You can do that, on the Xbox 360 press the Left Trigger twice and your guy more than likely gets the ball.
