Alright guys, please excuse my ignorance here.

I recently got broadband sorted at my new place but noticed that the 'sent and received bytes' are crazy, i.e. 3,000,000 within 2/3 minutes on the received.

I suspected it could have been spyware so I ran Spybot and removed the threats that it displayed but I'm still having the same problem and am worried that come the date of the bill it's gonna be astronomical cos of it.

EDIT: This only happens when I have a web browser open, I recently sat with the activity window open with no browser while playing FIFA 09 online on the old Xbox, and the bytes don't increase when I'm not browsing so am I right to assume that nobody is stealing my internet?

Any ideas lads?

Compare it to this:

I've been online 23 minutes, went for a shower with browser windows open (it is going up by about 1k every minute or so while I'm typing) and having visited five threads on here plus YouTube, Google and an Italian football website I've received 2.3MB and sent 500k. Yours is going up way too fast - you can clearly see where I may have received 2MB worth of data.

Something is accessing the internet. Do you have the likes of QuickTime, iTunes and other programs running which would be accessing the internet for crafty shenanigans?

Your firewall should be able to tell you which programs are accessing the internet and what percentage of the connection's bandwidth is being used by each as a starting point for checking.

Hey mate, thanks for the reply.

I checked the firewall and prevented a few programs accessing the net which I didn't think was necessary. I couldn't see that QuickTime or iTunes were accessing the net, although I do have both of these programs.

Alas, I am still suffering from these increased received bytes. I've looked everywhere for a solution but nothing seems to be working
