REM are my favourite band but I know almost nothing about them . I've heard people saying Michael Stipes has got aids , is a manic depressive and is a poof? Are any of these things true? If not , whats the guy all about?

I think it's all true apart from the AIDS bit. The latter nugget of information is pretty obvious innit!?

I don't see how people CAN'T like some of REM's material. "Eveybody Hurts" and "Losing My Religion" especially are all-time classics. I personally like "Nightswimming". So, yeah, I give a resounding yes to your question!

Nightswimming is undoubtley their best song , in my opinion.

I think you can tell by some of Stipe's lyrics that he has mental issues. And I think you can tell by his cardigans that he's a . . .

I really couldn't tell you. I think he's pretty stable now, it was more in the past.
REM are a great band, I've got Automatic For The People which is a great album.
My favourite tracks are:
Losing My Religion
Everybody Hurts
Nightswimming
Whats The Frequency, Kenneth
Man On the Moon
The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite
Orange Crush

How can you say they are your favourite band and not know he's gay? It's quite an important part of the band.
His name is Michael Stipe too not Stipes.

Why?
Does that mean you won't like them anymore?

No , of course the music comes first but I hope the band and music isn't associated in any way with homosexuality.

No I don't think so but it's still quite an important characteristic of the group and his songwriting.

Can you give me an example of a line or phrase he's used indicating this?

Not off hand but if you think about it, it's a large part of his life and so is his music so it'd be impossible to keep them apart.
They're a great band regardless of anything else.
