I agree.

Most of the rap around now is just as pop-orientated as Westlife or Britney.

Ditto.

If I hear one more song about Blunts/Pimpin'/Bitches/Hos/Guns etc. I'm going to scream.

If I had a pound for every time I heard a rapper said "Uh" I'd be in the Caribbean now with many beautiful ladies. Sorry, bitches. :D

I like rap, but I like rappers with a bit of variation. The best rap/hip-hop album I own is Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek's "Train of Thought".

It's excellent.

I must admit to liking G-Unit and 50-Cent but I do agree that the subjects they rap about really cannot be understood by people from outside the 'hood'. I love the tunes (Dr.Dre again!) but I sometimes sit and wonder how a 'G' thinks. After all, they are only human and most of us just want to be loved by someone, have children and try and make the world a slightly better place.

But even I must admit that the 'fuck everything' attitude is appealing in some way, just don't ask me to explain myself! I am a dad and my daughter is two years old so really this kind of sit shouldn't appeal to me but it does. I've always loved hip-hop ever since Public Enemy, Eric B, Raqeem, Grandmaster Flash, De La Soul etc.

In my humble opinion De La Souls new stuff (Art Official Intelligence) is real hip hop and they don't talk about crack or hoes once on the whole album. I am also a big fan of the Swedish group Looptroop that really are f¤%&% amazing. They rap in English and there albums 'Modern Day City Symphony' and 'The Struggle Continues' are excellent. Real activist shit with meaning and depth, exactly what hip-hop was in the beginning..

Flipper good taste you have. I also like a lot of the Hiphoppers you mentioned. My favourites are Talib Kweli, The Roots, Bubba Sparxxx and im also listening to elder music like Beastie Boys, UB40 :)
I dont like rappers who are rappin all the time about ''gangsta'' etc. Mumpleaser and Mutu explained it real nice in their posts. Thats also the reason I didnt listen to Obie Trice whole day long, I have his cd and listened to his cd a couple of times ( 3 or 4 times) But then I have enough of it and I want to listen to rappers who have something to say. Also I wanna say that Real stupid I didnt mention Ghostface Killah as one of my favourite rappers, I have his name for gods sake! :) GFK has a ''flow''...unreachable.

GFK what good taste you have!

Ghostface is a fantastic rapper, but I've been disappointed with his solo efforts.

The Roots are great. Black Thought is one of the best rappers around. And when Rahzel and Scratch do their bit together it's incredible.

Black Eyed Peas used to do the business, but their new stuff is terrible. Also, have you heard Jeru the Damaja? He's very anti-gangsta, and usually damn funny with it. He's skilled too.

GFK
05-03-2004, 23:10
Never heard of Jeru, maybe I will download something of him. Did you heard that there is also a gayrapper. I think its pathetic, I mean I dont like the gangsta shit but imagine that he raps: ''I will fuck you hard in the back, yeahhh'' aaaaahh that would be awfull!!

BtW Im aslo dissapointed by the efforts of ghostface last years, he seems to have lost the ''flow'''. But maybe he comes back with a splendid Album!

Flipper, GFK, Mutu & others know what they're about.

50 Cent? Terrible.

Young Buck? Terrible.

The Game? Terrible.

Tony Yayo has been good recently, and Lloyd Banks is a shining light in an otherwise proverbial, metaphorical, and philosophical pile of tripe. Space-coloured tripe.

Talib Kweli's the best lyricist in the "game," you just need to listen. If you want to hear him at his best, buy him and Mos Def's (who is also quality) album, "Blackstar." You'll get it for £7.50 on Play.com (http://www.play.com).

Canibus is another who needs to be heard and listened to. You need to appreciate his flow, and his lyrics. He's the only one, for me, who successfully combines that "ghetto" element (albeit he uses it only very slightly as subject matter) with insight and creativity and thought. He's got a tune called "N*gganometry," which is lyrically brilliant, and another called "100 Bars" which I always rave about because it's 5 minutes of lyrical perfection.

DMX. Yeah, ghetto. I know. But when he tells you about it over a moody, deep 'n' dark beat, you believe him. When he tells you he'll rape your daughter, you'll lock her room that night. If he says he'll rob the bank, you'll take out a rather large withdrawal the day before. His style's grizzly, but he's real, and (at the very least convinces you that he) is gangster. He's insightful in his tellings of the "hood" stories, as well - unlike 50 Cent, who sounds like a broken record being spun nine times. I mean, shot nine times. My bad. I'm surprised he hasn't made a tune called "Nine from tha Nine."

I could go on through so many artists who are lyrically class with a good flow as well, but I'd rather go to sleep tonight. Otherwise, I'll be here forever. There's a lot of talent out there, don't have the proverbial wool (proverbial because they aren't really ghetto slaves' sons - who picked wool/cotton) pulled over your eyes.

"100 Bars" which I always rave about because it's 5 minutes of lyrical perfection.

took your advice, downloaded it

lyrics are real nice, decent flow - but same beat all the way - gets real boring quick

hasn't changed my life so far, i'll listen to it properly tomorrow and have a look at some lyrics for it :)

Nifty1Pound50
08-03-2004, 07:32
It ain't about the beat - Canibus has always had lack-lustre production. This tune has no chorus, just pure spittin' flows for 5-odd minutes. I guarantee when you listen to the lyrics, and get familiar with it, you'll realise he's a master of words.

Anyone who can successfully rhyme "Porsche" and "coffins" has my vote.

Another bonus about Canibus is that he's London born, and isn't actually a Yank, he's half-Jamaican as well as being half-British. Now there's an achievement.

A little out-take for you until you hear 'em yourself:

My style of rhyming
Is ancient like Aztecs and Myans
Because I recognise it's all about timing
Me 'n' my freestyle alliance
Practicing African voodoo science
In front of 20-foot bonfires
Looking skyward
Calculating May 5th 200 the nine
Planets'll be in alignment
The arrival of the Prophet
In the cock-pit
Of a star-ship
The size of Hale-Bopp comet
With mercury ion rockets
And a big-ass "Canibus coming soon" poster
On the side of it
I'm known geographically and inter-galactically
That's why I got extra-terrestrials that wanna battle me
They even tried kidnapping me
And they would've snatched me
If the craft didn't get trapped in the Earth's gravity
Engine, stalled then failed
Crashed into a farmer's field
And that's really what caused Roswell
Undercover operatives working for COM-12
Disguised as a nigga signed with a record deal
Lyrically I'm off-scale
So all hail or get tossed towards Hell
Whatever y'all feel
Bruisin' niggas
Confusin' niggas
Like Chip Fu from the Fu-Schnickens
Hit you with nuclear cruiser missiles

That's around the first minute of lyrics. It gets better and better for the next four minutes. Trust me, the tune's sick. And he's a Londoner!

No, he doesn't beatbox and rap at the same time. He beatboxes and sings at the same time, though. "If Your Mama Only Knew." :D Quality.

GFK, with regards to Canibus - I personally think he's great. You might not like his style, in which case each to their own. After listening to "N*gganometry" again last night, I can profess that this is lyrically top notch as well. As is "Behind Enemy Rhymes." Those two, along with "How We Roll" (in which Canibus claims; "I'm the illest lyricist in America...Emcees can't see me 'cos I'm too quick, for their human retina to register) and "100 Bars" (see previous post), are the four tunes that stand out to me so far. If we were allowed to talk about acquiring free music, I'd say acquire them - but as we're not, I'll say buy them. Somehow. Ahem.

BTW about the cars thing, if Busted drove around in hummers and chryslers would you start liking them? i couldn't give a toss what my favourite singers drive.

"Gansta" rap is fuckin' awful.

They can shove their "Ice", "Bitches" and various guns up their repetitive asses.

Black Eyed Peas will turn rap into pop. A few years ago they were respectable hip-hoppers but now with the perfectly knobable lady in-tow they are a pop act.

Nifty1Pound50
15-03-2004, 06:42
Errrr...Na, don't think so, i think the other rap lovers out there will agree with me too, so go and listen to your rock music and roll outa dis biatch...

But 50 Cent is commercialising it. "Pop" is a shorter term used for "popular" music, that is - commercial music.

And I also think you'll find I listen to a lot more hip-hop than you even believed existed, with your closed-mind dick-ridin' son-of-a-bi@aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa aaaatchiznit thought-processes. At least back up your points when you're arguing. Give me a tune where 50 Cent flows insightfully, or tells a really good story, and I'll shut up. Until then, I couldn't care less if he owned my car.

GE
15-03-2004, 21:15
Give me a tune where 50 Cent flows insightfully, or tells a really good story, and I'll shut up. Until then, I couldn't care less if he owned my car.

"Many Men (Wish Death)" you heard that song, if not listen to it,

"Many men, wish death upon me
Blood in my eye dawg and I can't see
I'm trying to be what I'm destined to be
And niggas trying to take my life away
I put a hole in a nigga for fucking with me
My back on the wall, now you gon' see
Better watch how you talk, when you talk about me
'Cause I'll come and take your life away"

Nifty1Pound50
16-03-2004, 00:12
Yes, of course I've heard it. I also knew you were going to mention it when I challenged you to find an insightful tune. I'll also grant you the fact that it's the nearest thing 50 Cent has to "deep" rhyming.

The last two lines are good ("It's clear I'm here for a real reason...'Cos he got hit like I got hit but he ain't fuckin' breathin'"), but again - he's talking about violence. He hasn't got scope beyond that, or so it would seem. I understand the fact that his life has revolved around gang warfare, getting shot, drugs, and the usual "hood" activities - but if he was a good enough lyricist he'd create something beyond that.

Talib Kweli hasn't experienced all of the deep things he talks about in his life - he's simply creative enough to talk about them with metaphors and so forth. Also, there are some things that all human beings share - emotion. Joy, and pain, can be recognised by a person, no matter who, in some way or another. For example, Kweli has part of a lyric (on the tune "Beautiful") where he says "like the moon moves the tide, and the tide moves the sand." Simple, you might think. Now, here, he's using knowledge to create a lyric about beauty - or what can be seen as beauty. It's also very common knowledge, about the geographical tide pattern and how it functions. But it works. I'm sure 50 Cent isn't capable of writing something like this, for whatever reason. You can argue because he hasn't experienced it, or learnt it in school - in which case, that's to his detriment, and it's his fault for being stupid/uncreative.

Similarly, compare DMX to 50 Cent. Both of them are "ghetto" rappers. But DMX spits his flows with a deep edge.

On "Let Me Fly," the stand-out lyric (for me) by DMX is:

"I sold my soul to the devil, and the price was cheap
And yo' it's cold on this level, 'cos it's twice as deep"

What's he saying here? Well, he's implying the gangster lifestyle, by selling his soul to the devil - he's a bad man. But he's doing it more creatively than "Get caught in the wrong hood, and get filled with holes." If I further break down that lyric from a technical aspect, it will further highlight 50 Cent's inability as a rap artist (because after all, rapping is a form of poetry). DMX uses a multi (multi-syllable rhyme), which is more complicated than a single line.

i.e.

-----A-----B-----C-----D
-----A-----B-----C-----D

At A, he rhymes "soul" with "cold."
At B, he rhymes "devil" and "level."
At C, he rhymes "price" and "twice."
At D, he rhymes "cheap" and "deep."

In the space of two lines, DMX is basically giving us all of the information that 50 Cent gives us in a whole song of his (about how bad he is), and doing it in a technically astute way, with a complex rhyme. This is probably one of the best multiple syllable rhymes I've heard from any rapper, hence why I'm using it as an example.

OK, I know you could argue that 50 Cent makes for "easy" listening - but I've had enough of that. I want skilled rappers, who use clever imagery and take time to write. If you break down a lyric (as I've done above), you will notice the skills, and identify them. I promise you you'll appreciate hip-hop more if you do.

i heard it and apart from window shopper, id throw it in the bin, but if you still got a receipt then you can have money instead.

bring it back and buy sweets or another album, if you want a good album get be by common, unless you already have it coz get rich or die tryin is air polution
