View Full Version : need pc component advice
Im thinking of building a new pc and this is what im proposing to buy, my budget at the moment stands at £900
core i7 920-2.66 ghz but will be overclocked to 4.2ghz
corsair h50-1 watercooler
asus p6t motherboard
OCZ Gold 6GB 1600mhz
ati radeon 5770
1tb western digital harddrive
thermaltake eureka case
how could I make the pc even better?
and im looking at monitors for under £200, maybe you could be any help?
The 5770 is a bad idea. Might as well just get a 5850 and overclock it to 5870 speeds.
What size monitor? There are a couple of decent 24" BenQ monitors (try the BenQ G2420HD or BenQ G2420HDBL) for under £200 although be aware that while many people are supremely impressed by them, some aren't. The LED backlighting on the latter isn't 'true'. Do some Googling on the subject if necessary. The 5850 and 5870 will be better suited to a gaming resolution in excess of 1680x1050 than the 5770 which is likely to feel the pace a bit.
Don't assume you'll get an overclock to 4.2Ghz - each chip behaves differently. One might overclock with ease to 4.4Ghz, another might collapse at 3.8Ghz.
oh right thanks for the info but a 5850 is stretching my budget at the moment, and where can I pick up a 5850 cheap, and also thanks about the monitors, the benq looks like it can fit my needs and its quite affordable and 24" is the max I need.
about overclocking ill try to overclock it at 200 bclk with 21x to give me 4.2ghz hopefully and one thing I forgot to mention was the psu, which one do you recommend me to buy for under £100?
Never skimp on the PSU. I'd go for a 600-650W PSU as optimum performance is around 60-70% load and deteriorates when the PSU is highly stressed.
Try this:

Had a quick look at the 600-650W PSUs and they are all of a good make. Obviously make sure it has the required connectors for your graphics card - which to be honest is probably a certainty anyway.
Read this about the 5770 v 5850

There are plenty more threads like it. That was literally the first one Google brought up and appears to have a lot of Indian users on it . The second is this http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/274282-31-radeon-5770-5850 and so on. If necessary, wait a month until you can afford the 5850.
thanks mate... also itll take me more than a month to get a 5850 as im only a 14 year old LOL and ive decided to purchase a corsair tx750 as my psu as I have read good reviews about it on the internet and once again thanks

Plus I've got one :smug:
so what do you think of it?
Its working. That's what I think of it
ive just bought a 5850 for my current quad core setup... how do you overclock the graphics card?
If you fry the card, blame only yourself. Things may have moved on BIOS-wise since I did mine but I needed to flash my graphics card's BIOS with an MSI BIOS and then used MSI Afterburner to do the incremental overclocking, testing as I went along with benchmarks such as FurMark, Unigine Heaven and 3D Mark Vantage. It can be a lengthy process as you need to make sure the graphics card isn't going to overheat after lengthy use with your selected speed, fan and voltage settings.
You will not damage your card if you are careful and follow the instructions about incremental increases so long as you do thorough testing. Beware, however, that depending on the flavour of 5850 you bought, overclocking may void your warranty. I got an ASUS 5850 which has a warranty which does not penalise users for overclocking the card.

thanks ive overclocked mine to 875/4280 stable at 1.2 volts, and thanks for the info on flashing with an msi bios
4280 :| *does some thinking* right that's 875/1070 :>
I've set mine so it runs at 875/1175 on 1.149 volts with the fan at 40 in games but at stock 2D speeds for general OS use.
thanks... ive bumped up the core and mem to 900/1200 at 1.2 volts, fan speed is at 45 which is VERY loud so I have to put the volume of my games up lol
psu DIED the first day I got it... now gotta RMA it and for me in the future ill stick with ocz which are ultra reliable
