OK, but the answer is 2 pac

kneros
26-03-2004, 07:20
the answer is...

Andre3000 or as I knew of him growing up, just dre

some proofs-

'Humble Mumble' feat. Eryka Badu from the album 'Stankonia'
Too Democratic, Republic fuck it
We chicken nugget, we dip in the sauce like mop and bucket
Blue-collar scholars, who'll take your dollar and wipe my ass wit it
You livin for the lotto never hit it
I met a critic, I made her shit her drawers
She said she thought hip-hop was only guns and alcohol
I said "Oh hell naw!" But yet it's that too
You can't discrimi-hate cause you done read a book or two
What if I looked at you in a microscope, saw all the dirty organisms
living in your closet would I stop and would I pause it? Whoo!
To put that bitch in slower motion, got the potion and the antidote
And a quote for collision the decision.. is,
do you want to live or wanna exist?
The game changes everyday so obsolete is the fist and marches
Speeches only reaches those who already know about it
This is how we go about it

the whole verse has the usual clever metaphors and imagery typical of dre - and not to mention rhythmically superior - i especially like dre's reference to the state of civil rights in present day america - things are changing for the better, so "obsolete is" the need for "the fist and marches/Speeches only reaches those who already know about it/This is how we go about it"

and one more if you don't mind:

Verse from 'Aquemini' from the album 'Aquemini'
My mind warps and bends floats the wind count to ten
meet the twin Andre Ben. welcome to the lion's den
original skin many men comprehend
I extend myself so you go out & tell a friend
Sin all depends on what you believing in
Faith is what you make it that's the hardest shit since MC Ren
Alien can blend right on in wit' yo' kin
look again 'cause I swear I spot one every now & then
It's happenin' again wish I could tell you when
Andre this is Andre y'all just gon' have to make amends

i won't go into any lyrical analysis as this is a pretty abstract verse and everyone is welcome to their own interpretations but if you listen to this verse you will notice he rhymes each line across multiple points using the same phonetic syllable(twin, Alien, MC Ren etc) for the entire verse!
Dre also has an intangible - a unique southern drawl with an almost sing-song quality to it

Honorable mention - anything from the albums Southernplayisticadillacmusak, ATLiens, the track 'Tough Guy'(feat UGK) from the motion picture soundtrack Shaft

if you appreciate Dre as much as i do, or want to, check out the first 3 albums -Southernplayisticadillacmusak, ATLiens, and Aquemini
many that jock him nowadays haven't even heard the first two albums.. but that's where its all at imo

the answer is Rakim, hes been doing this for 20 years and is so many rappers idols, not one person has a bad word to say for him and he was the first artist to come out with all of the complex lyrics that we see soo much of nowadays

Kayne West's album has gotta be one of the outstanding albums of the year so far, his lyrics are pretty good but his rapping isnt outstanding, but u still gotta respect a man who does producing and rapping like that... however the best rapper/producer has gotta be without doubt DJ Quik

Gizmondo
27-03-2004, 22:17
Not a big fan of rap but I guess I'd pick M&M because he has some funny songs.

Travis Bickle

lol, gotta agree with that

"You've got to hold and give
But do it at the right time
You can be slow or fast
But you must get to the line
They'll always hit you and hurt you
Defend and attack
Theres only one way to beat them
Get round the back
Catch me if you can
Cos' I'm the England man
And what you're looking at
Is the master plan
We ain't no hooligans
This ain't a football song
Three lions on my chest
I know we can't go wrong"

tough question, I don't think there is one best rapper. no single rapper has brought the consistency or life-span to lay claim to that title. so I'll break it down:

Lyricist: B.I.G., Nas, Talib Qweli

Cadence: Eminem, Dre, 2pac

Style: Jay Z, Jadakiss, lauryn Hill

Depth: Aesop Rock, Del tha funkee Homosapien

Kayne West put out a good album, but doesn't deserve to be mentioned here. And I'd pick El-p over Quick as best MC/producer

L-boogie is the sickest female MC in history. you probably haven't heard her get down. She is THE talent in the Fugees, Wyclef and Pras should thank her for carrying them. check her out on "how many mics", "zealots", "the score", basically anytime she flows on that album she comes xtra hard.

but i feel you on the lyricysts, there are alot of people close to the top, it is open to interpretation.

Talib Kweli, Andre 3000 and Leeroy Kesiah of Saian Supa Crew.

I think Saian Supa Crew are exactly that. I don't understand a drop of French but still enjoy them as they're musically and cadentially brilliant.

I've read some of thei lyrics translated and they're not half bad too.

Less of the 'illest' and 'sickest' shit. They exude pretentiousness. Worse than swearing.

Snoop Doggy Dogg is the greatest rapper ever. He has the style, the delivery, the lyrics, he's been in porn, he has his own clothing brand, he's been in movies and he is still alive.

i dont care wot anyone else says, just listen to sum of his classics, the whole of illmatic lol, Ether, One Mic......
not sayin that most of tha other ones u named are crap, he's just better, and yes, im saying that he's better than 2pac and Biggie. Biggie woz never a GREAT artist, but he made quite a few good tunes, and 2pac, was more of a poet, than a rapper (may not make sense, lol) but i feel that Nas is a better rapper, as he talks about wot sum people go thru generally, whereas 2pac woz focussing on himself

Brenda's Got A Baby, Baby Don't Cry, Keep Ya Head Up, Teardrops & Closed Caskets, The Good Die Young, You Can Be Touched.... Pac has to be the GOAT of all time jus due to his sheer versatility, where one moment he was praising women then calling them bitches on songs like Why U Turn On Me, he was praising the east coast on shit like Old School then dissing the fuck outta them on several songs :D plus he was also very knowledgable on politics, u cud learn alot of things just by picking up a 2Pac album

I must say you've got me there. My uneducated post has got me a roasting. I grew up the early half of my teens listening to NWA, Dre, Snoop, 2pac, Ice Cube, Ice T, Wu Tang, Busta Rhymes, Nas and more. And I still love Hip Hop/Rap, but dont keep as up to date as I should.
I picked Snoop because of the memories. I grew up singing along to his Doggystyle album with all my mates and just loving his vibe (I can sing it all off heart). I picked Snoop as who I think is my favourite rapper. It does say 'you decide' in the thread opener. So although I am open to debate, I am sticking to my opinion.
I know there are many better rappers, but I just like Snoop. Doggy Fizzle Televizzle, Up in smoke tour, etc etc, I just think he's funny. A good entertainer.
I'll revise my decision and say who I actually think is the best rapper pound for pound, probably Jay-Z. Lyrically speaking. :)

Jay-Z is as good as/better than any of those, and I'm not a fan of his. Big into Wu Tang though. Method Man is class.
I gave my opinion of my best rapper, Snoop Dogg, but got slated, so I said Jay-Z, cos he is actually the best rapper. I saw it on MTV. They compared loads and Jay-Z came out top. The Black album is mighty impressive.
So it seems, no matter what you say someone is going to disagree.

Jay aint bad. Lets just say he's the best rapper commercially. He appeals to alot of people. He even said he had to dumb down his lyrics so he could sell more. Cause look at black star, or common who have very positive lyrics but dont sell as much. ;)

Slick Rick's ''The Great Adventures of Slick Rick''
album was incredible, a classic for me. He is the rapper who put storytelling on the map. Todays rappers have bit his rhymes and style hard e.g Nas, Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, Cormega, Eminem etc. He fell off though, and was in and out of prison, hardly making songs and could never overcome his debut. Thats the only reason why i won't class him as the best rapper ever but would class him as a poineer for innovating hip-hop when it came to storytelling no one could touch him man.

Sorry to say this Singh, but making number 1 hits is doo dooo in justifying your a really good rapper. Your leaning too much onto the business side, mate. Missy Elliot is a shite rapper thats a fact, she is shite all around. Jay-Z is a key figure in HipHop just because of his incredible business mind. What your basically saying is people join the Music biz to make money off number 1 hits, which is true and disgusting because back then people made music for the love of it for example the great Bob Marley. The industry is soo fucked up nowadays, trust. People can make the worst song in the world and get number 1.

yeah Nas VS Jay-z ? Nas murdered Jigga end of story. Ether.

Biggie or 2pac ? Very hard to decide, as 2pac was a legend who was actually bigger than HipHop itself. Biggie was a better lyricist his ability to play with words was extraordinary, listen to '' Warning '' a song in which Biggie is describing a situation in which he is woken up by a call from his mate, telling him how his own mates are gonna try kill him. Also ''Gimme The Loot'' a song in which Biggie raps as 2 different people, one is himself, the other his partner in crime, CLASSIC.

have you got any examples of this cause i cant rember this happing much in hip hop/ r n b?? i can remeber this happing in pop etccc

yea youre right about nas vs jay-z no competion for nas i reckon. but you have got to remeber nas only comes out what every 4 years or so, imo all round jay-z is betta and more consitent whereas when nas raps he raps about things that happen in real life. Whereas Jay-z raps abt Drugs, girls, and crystal. so there are many for and against on this matter

Biggie or 2-pac?? i agree to hard to decide we could sit here all day discussing who is better and we still wont work out who is, there both trully the legends. i havent heard "warning" though prob good anyway

Word Bro, but then you gotta think what made them sell out.All these rappers got lives to live, kids to feed you know all that good stuff.Look at Comm sense,Talib Kweli,Mos deffizle and some other ones great rappers lack the commercial benefits of a Eminem.Money speaks volumes and as soon as the guys arent making as much as they want anything goes.

Truff. ;)

i cant believe why u even compared them! the only thing they had in common was that they were BIG!!

biggie's lips got in the way when he rapped and plus no1 and i mean no1 can even touch the flow of big pun........he was amazing and easily by far the greatest......and that son is the truth.......if he was black then i think more people would be agreeing with me and if he got shot by some1 (and thats also the truth behing hip-hop which is a shame) and dont get me started on the state of which hip-hop is in.........ah the good ol' days when it was called gangsta rap...now hip-pop........everythin that comes out now is the same......only rapper comin out soon that can offer a different perspective is Jin and he keeps getting delayed...until then im jus listen to SlipKnot and Linkin Park l8rs!
Are you crazy ? Biggie's lips got in the way  ? WTF kinda excuse is that ? I could just say Big Pun's HUGE GASPS FOR BREATH put me off his rapping. Silly, actually incredibly stupid excuses mate. You say nobody can touch Pun's flow, yet you have no damn evidence. I'm sorry but a person's skin colour is impossible to know through listening. Being shot gets you some shine ofcourse, but doesn't improve your ability to rhyme. Biggie was killed over a misunderstanding, Pun died because he had 1 or too many burgers AND THAT SON IS THE TRUTH ;) . Jin ain't the only one, their is meant to be some buzz about a dood called ''Corey Gunz'' that I haven't heard yet, but peeps are saying he is sickness on legs. Pun was a superb rapper but Biggie was better thats a fact man, Pun never put out a classic album or one that is regarded a classic by anybody, even you know he hasn't. End of story.

Run DMC are legends for their superb creativity and the way they broke into mainstream without selling their souls. But Rakim was the BIG SHOT them days, no lie, with Kane inches behind him.

So this is a thread about who you think as an individual is best rapper of all time?Aight. Its still unclear on many levels as to what you call good rap.I personally view anything piece of work that Black star,Comm sense,GZA as excellent examples of rap.Not to say Nas and Jigga dont have anything worth listening too is just that i believe the rap game needs intellectual rhymes that are promoting change and intellectual growth at the same time.

lol...................u totally misunderstood the purpose of my post, all we are doing here is expressing opinions........hence u cant state that ur opinion is a fact..........thats what i was tryin to get across to u by coming up with that silly excuse about biggie! u took it seriously lol....but to be honest i neva really listened to biggie because IMO something was missing that didnt really keep me listening!!

btw u dont think that Capital Punishment was a classic??..for the first latino rapper to go platinum i believe that warrants a great achievement and a classic status! but that again is MY OPINION and NOT A FACT!!! something u havent grasped yet lol! ;)

If selling records makes you a classic album, then. MC Hammer & Vanilla Ice are the best rappers ever  . The fact you never really listened to Biggie Smalls makes me take no notice of your OPINION.
I have all 3 albums released by Pun, I have listened to them thoroughly and say neither are classics. Mind you he does make some classic joints, but his album runs out of creativity, which Biggie has in a bag. Plus, on Pun's ''Yeeeah Baby'' the track ''Off Wit His Head'', Prospect outshines him, Biggie was outshone by nobody.

Bone Thugs are good as well, they came up with the fast rapping style.

And Tha Crossroads is one of the best songs of all time, truly a classic.

Though you can't rule out Big L aswell, listen to "Let Em' Have It L" and you'll know what i'm talkin' about ;)

im not speakin for my opinion to be valued.......its called expression but it looks as thou u c what i was sayin apart frm the bit about pun goin platinum....u misunderstood  , (mc hammer and vanilla ice lol  ) but that doesnt bother me......anyways i best be off...hip hop is still annoyin me nowadays.....so slipknot is still wat im listenin to l8ly i never realised but music that u can relate to makes it much more enjoyable, gives u a feelin that IMO hip hop cant give! (for me anyway) unless u live like what they talk about! (again my opinion)........i gotta prepare myself for the match tonight......liverpool best win...........come on u reds!!!..........gunplay...don t start chattin shit bout the reds now!!!...u'l take this discussion to another level! :D lol l8r

You need to take a listen to some of Biggie's tracks. Thats what people fail to do. He is probably the least heard of, out of the 3.
A poll, will be a great idea, but their are too many rappers to fit in.
