yes you have to create a room and ask them to join. There you can choose friendly match or ranking with points

I mean a 2 vs 2 ranked match. can i play with a friend of mine who lives a couple of hours away vs 2 other people. i can't figure out how to do it if theres a way.

you can have 2 v 2, but the 2 must be on the same playstaiton.
