It is a sad state of affairs that nowadays I know fuck all about trending music, in years gone by I was buying all sorts on white label and general promo but now, not a sausage. The charts are usually filled with god awful guff with the odd tune making inroads. What I want though is an album to get my teeth into. Mjall posted elsewhere he was listening to the ArchAndroid album by Janelle Monae, wasn't half bad so I'm clearing my iPod for new music and recommendations are most definitely required.
What I need:
Artist, Album, genre - your rating/opinion
In the event this is duplicating a thread, well damn my old age for not checking properly!

Nas - Illmatic - 90s New York Hip Hop - In mine, and many others opinion, one of the greatest rap albums of all time and epitomised the old east coast lyricism and flow. It really is an incredible album, and while the production may seem slightly dated, Nas' flow and lyrical content more than makes up for it. It is the very definition of a classic. 5 out of 5.
Ms. Dynamite - A Little Deeper - R&B - One of the finest UK R&B albums my ears have ever had the pleasure of listening to. It's hugely underrated I think, and a very true and soulful album even if very gritty and raw in the content, but that's what makes it such a real documentary of life. 4.5 out of 5.
Common - Be - Hip Hop - This is probably Common's finest work, and a superb album. At 11 tracks, most of which around the 3 minute mark, it is quite short but the fact it's so highly regarded just emphasises how sweet it is. I can never speak highly enough of Common's conscious and spoken word style, and Be epitomises the Chicago Hip Hop scene of the last 15 years. A classic. 4.8 out of 5.
Dr.Dre - The Chronic - G-Funk Rap - There isn't really too much I need to say about this album, it defined the west coast G-Funk era and the production is some of Dre's very best work. The quality is just amazing. One listen to "Lil' Ghetto Boy" or "Fuck Wit Dre Day" is enough to stick in the mind. Pure classic. 5 out of 5.
Little Brother - The Minstrel Show - Hip Hop - A very slept on and overlooked album, relatively recent too being released in 2005 I think. The whole album revolves around the theme of present day rap and pokes fun at the genre in quite intelligent and wonderfully artistic and musical ways. The album itself is genuinely brilliant though, from flawless production by 9th Wonder to consciously intelligent and superb lyrical content by rappers of the Little Brother group Big Pooh and Phonte. There's even an alter-ego in Percy Miracles by Phonte for the song "Cheatin'" which you'll need to check out, a parody of sorts on stereotypical R&B songs of today. Brilliant album. 4.5 out of 5.

Mayer Hawthorne - A Strange Arrangement - Soul
Slick. Out of all the contemporary male artists to have released a 60's soul revival album (Plan B, ALoe Blacc, Raphael Saadiq, etc.) Mayer's effort stands out by a country mile. He may not have the strongest voice, but it sounds great over the light drums and jingling melodies. 5*
Daedelus - Love To Make Music To - Electronic
If, like Johnny said, you like electronic music, you've probably heard of this geezer. Hes the guy who produced the sample for Madvillain's "Accordian" but it doesen't really sound like the same artist. He uses the most obscure old timey samples which, combined with modern uptempo breakbeats, sounds wierdly fantastic. 4.5*

Chatham County Line - IV

Avi Buffalo - Avi Buffalo
One of my favourite albums of last year. The singer has a unique voice and their album is filled with cool tunes. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evu_MqAZpC0)
