View Full Version : Revision music?

I can't remember if there was an old thread for this (prolly created by me some time ago) so decided to create a new one.

Yeah, so I have a few ACCA exams in the next 11 or so days and need some music to "help" (play in the background without distracting me from revising).

Any suggestions?

There was a thread for this but I'll say the same thing. Classical/Instrumental music, even some Soundtracks. Nothing with words in, too distracting (for me anyway).

Yeah, I'd echo the sentiment that instrumentals would be best. Anything with words/lyrics might distract you too much.

Can either of you reccommend any composers (other than the obvious ones)?

I really can't concentrate with much noise happening in the background, I work a lot better in pure silence I think. I do hear my friends talking about how they listen to the radio and whatnot when doing work, and I just can't help but think that's so detrimental.

It depends what sort of style you're looking for. I like a bit of Hans Zimmer, Graeme Revell (The Crow OST), Sam Spence (I'm an NFL fan). Or you could just listen to the Halo soundtracks.

I doubt you'll find all of those helpful though.

Try anything by Debussy (bar Pelleas and Melisande as it's an opera, obviously), piano pieces or something else by Ravel, The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams and Jean Sibelius' tone poems (En saga, Finlandia, The Swan of Tuonela) for an example. Could be worth a try.

EDIT: Don't know how I forgot, but: Spiegel im Spiegel by Arvo Pärt is a definite one, whilst you could try and check out Kind of Blue by Miles Davis if you haven't, perhaps the atmosphere will suit that of an educational one whilst in addition I'm certain that album raises any individual's IQ a few points (never a bad thing!)

'Treefingers' by Radiohead and 'Last Orders' by Richard Hawley were my picks during uni. I just had these two songs on loop. 'Treefingers' was by far the most listened to track on iTunes, before I had to re-install it.

I'm exactly the same. I can only work in when it's pretty much silent.

Saint-Saëns (minus 'Fossils' from Carnival of the Animals), Chopin, The Chakachas (but NOT 'Jungle Fever'), Billy Taylor Trio, Django Reinhardt. But I keep the volume low or it'll be overpowering.

There's a lot of easy listening/jazz from the pre-60s like Andy Williams and Benny Goodman that is comfortable to have on in the background.

Peculiar...Fossils is my favourite part of the Carnival!

Also, The Pines of Rome by Respighi is recommended.

I never said I didn't like it! It's just can you really imagine concentrating on work during that?

I'm not sure...it could provide a very short-lived energy boost which would be replaced by being distracted by the music in a few moments :D
