View Full Version : Do you swear too much?
Title says it all.

I swear a bit when I get angry (like when I'm playing PES for example, or when watching Bolton play ;)), but in any other situation, I'm usually alright.
Ziss, are you one of those people that swear every other word? If you want any tips, I'd say think about how others perceive you and your potty mouth. Swearing every other word doesn't exactly make you look intelligent does it?
I will say "fuck" without hesitation, unless at work or speaking to strangers (or friends of the missus). I also use the C word without thinking it too inappropriate.

Depends who I'm with. At work, yes because it's hard to converse with guys who do and not do it yourself.
I grew up in that sort of environment, not at home I mean but out with mates.
At home in front of my missus I try not to but that's mainly because she gives me earache whenever I do. In front of my kids definately not and I correct anyone who does.

I hardly ever swear to be honest.

I swear way way too much.
Depends on the company, if I'm with a group of mates I'd swear, but definitely not excessively. Just the odd 'fuck', 'wanker' here and there.
My peak times for swearing is definitely playing football when the ref or a teammate is frustrating or annoying me.
But overall not that much, I'm pretty good at controlling my swearing, I've only ever swore in front of my mum once.

Swearing around women and children makes you a cunt. Unless it's aimed at Gary Newbon. The shit bucket.

Pretty much the same here on all counts.
I very rarely swear, unless "I want to." It never usually 'slips' out in general conversation, but only when something 'happens' such as I stub my toe or I get killed by a twat on Call of Duty etc.
The more important question is, why is swearing considering swearing? What's so significant about the 'curse' words, how come one day someone just said these words are forbidden and horrible? That's always intrigued me.

I rarely swear. I might be rude and inappropriate, but without using swear words.
EDIT:

I've thought about this before. It's all in the head. Someone says a word is unacceptable, so it becomes so. To me, a swear word is inoffensive unless there is genuine intent behind it. If I ever have children, I won't mind them swearing at home, but not in public, just to be sociable.
I'm not a huge swearer. Never swear in front of the family, and never swear in crowded places. I only drop the occasional one in during chatting with friends or as a spontaneous reaction when I'm in pain or mess something up.

I'm interested in the words on the borderlines; the lesser 'offensive' words. I mean, is crap actually swearing? Bitch? Arse/ass? :erm:

I remember "God damn" being censored in a song on the radio; dunno if it was because it involved "God" or because of the "damn", or both together?
That and some stations censor the word "sex" from The Lazy Song.

I just played a couple of games of PES online..... I think I DO swear too much. Even the slightest thing like a miss-placed pass, or 50/50 going against me for the umpteenth time in a match.... gives me verbal tourettes!
I don't really swear when I'm around people. I don't find it hard to control. If I'm alone, then I'll swear as I know no one is around to be offended.
I do remember one time though, where I swore infront of my mom. A few years ago my American cousin was on holiday over here and she was staying with us. She was like 11. One day she was continuously annoying me, which is expected I guess, her being American and all (sorry Stringer, The Eristic, Iron City and all the other Americans on here).
Finally I just had enough and told her to "fuck off". I told a 11 year old girl to fuck off in front of my mother. My mother was just like, "HEY!", but she did have a smile on her face, so maybe I was speaking for her as well.
I felt bad after though. I mean, she was only 11.

I seem to swear when I'm driving.
Usually happens when I get a near-miss, or some bastard doesn't bother to use the indicator at a roundabout.

I suffer with road rage.
I swear loads whilst driving. Especially with old biddies going ridiculously slow.
I've worked in environments where swearing was rife and it certainly rubbed off on me (fnar fnar) - but I don't swear to excess ... (unless I watch England play on Television. I swore so much during the World Cup game against Germany my missus had to close the patio doors because she was embarrassed at my retrograde chatter.)
I do use more 'sedate' swear words like 'Shite' and 'Bollocks' at my current place of employment with my colleagues, mainly to augment some sarcasm or a quick one liner.
I'd never use 'Cunt' in open conversation at work as 98% of the office is female. I've heard a woman say it ... but only to say that she hated that word ...
I swear a bit too much.
I get major road rage. Gave an old lady the finger the other day for driving like a twat... I felt really bad after I realised it was an old lady but her driving was all over the road and she shouldn't have been driving tbh.
edit:
I've never really use the word cunt IRL unless I'm really angry and it just comes out.

I swear a lot when I'm with friends, practically every other word. At home though I'm decent at holding back(They do slip at times). When playing PES or FIFA I swear like a sailor though, especially if online.

Yes a lot, when I'm with my parents etc, I dont swear as much, as part of respect to my family. When PES is online, I dont think I say any other words haha.
I swear all the time.
Saturday night I had a few jagerbombs (amongst other things, before you all calling me two-shandy Dale again ) and turned into a monster. Apparently I was shouting 'cunt' at everyone and anyone. "Oi you walking over there in that shit jacket, you're a CUNNNTTTT!" That sort of thing.
Never swear in front of my mother though, that's just disrespectful. Apart from a few 'piss'' that get through the barrier.
It really depends on the company. With friends I usually do. With the girl, hardly and when it comes to anything football always.
I'd say I swear too much. Like Sminky I have spent a considerable time working in manufacture & warehouse environments where swearing is basically a language in it's own right and yeah, I'd say it has affected my use of it due to becoming so accustomed to it as to not be affected by it.
I do curb my language in certain company though.

I worked in a Warehouse for six years, in that time I was speaking like a truck driver "Fucking thing is fucking fucked!" ... a sentence even my profane colleagues found excessive.

Try working in warehousing & transport for 17! Certainly has a profound effect on one's vocabulary. I do cause people confusion though, I as you may have seen with my general posting, I can be very eloquently verbose at times, so imagine that mixed with fuck, shit and bollocks every few words... :erm:

I completely empathise dear boy. My writing style tends to be more considered than the spoken word, this is to be expected, you can't revise a statement once spoken
"Sorry, I'd like to revoke my statement in favour of this one ..."

I swear way too much. If anyone knows any genuinely effective ways of curbing it, please tell them here. I probably say the word Cunt about a hundred times a day.
Same here; cunt seems to be my new favourite word.

I'll be playing PES here on the PC in the spare bedroom, and let out a more than audiable "Why didn't you pass you fucking cunt!?!?!" And then hear my neighbour moving in the room next door.

I swear a lot. Is it too much? Well, perhaps however it's never caused me any trouble. I swear constantly at the office however this seems to be no issue as around 75% of the office swear proficiently and often. The frequency with which I have to deal with incompetent and frankly idiotic people is probably the root cause. If I've had a few my language gets even worse.
To some extent I agree with Dragonfly the 'offense' caused by these words is merely social conditioning and frankly beneath a rational society. Unfortunately, society is anything but rational. Would I be happy for my children to swear at home? No. This sounds counter-intuitive and perhaps hypocritical however profanity is not accepted widely and therefore allowing children to swear at home teaches an norm which is not true. If they choose to disregard the norm once they are older I would be more than happy for them to do so.

Although I agree with the majority of your post, your point pertaining to children swearing is rational - but, and although I understand entirely the point you are imparting - you are painting a fairly prosaic black and white rationale of society. Indeed quite misanthropic for someone so young.

Misanthropy? Maybe. Realism? More likely. I am not saying that people aren't rational, that depends on the person, however I would contest to the nth degree any claim that society is at all rational.

Of course it's not, because it's mostly populated by morons. Unqualified democracy as a system of government doesn't work. If the country was run by academics, then it would be much better.

I disagree. Sections of society are clearly irrational e.g people who worship celebrity culture and their pursuance of it, spongers and criminals but majority rationality exists.
I hate being in public with people who swear loads, just seems embarrassing

Look in the streets Matt, does anarchy prevail? Are cars on fire with thugs rampaging? No.
I wouldn't dispute this doesn't happen elsewhere - but in urban regeneration and volunteers working with kids, who would otherwise be committing crime, we have rationality.
I think compared to social environments beyond these shores we have little to be concerned about.

Sorry old bean, but against my normal instincts I have to agree with Original?
We used to live in a society based on predictability, standards and some solid ethics which when combined created a relatively stable and rational state.
Today that has been totally shot to shit. It's not all the fault of society, changes in social status, poverty, employment and the dangerous increase in the wearing of velour and Burberry have taken their toll on society, crippling it's basic moral codes, socially acceptable behaviours and infrastructure - ergo, rational behaviour descends into unpredictable & irrational.

"Oh, that's easy, Tucker's Law. If someone cunt can fuck something up, then that cunt will choose the worst possible fucking time to fucking fuck it up because that cunt is a cunt. I've got that written down on a tea towel."
I think that's right? It was done from memory, mind you.

I agree with this one actually, mainly because it leads to people judging you negatively as a result. I always have to check my friends who swear when we're next to strangers in high streets or whatever, as it's just not really pleasant when you're walking past a mother and daughter for example and your friend will blurt out the word 'cunt' as if it's necessary in general conversation.
I've already made my point clear on swearing though at the start of the thread to which Dragonfly agreed, in that how did curse words all of a sudden become 'offensive', who enforced this? It'd be interesting if this were never to have occurred, for sure.

Great to see you here Mr. Fick! Great to see the familiar faces around.
Barry San... You have returned. How are you? Are you in camp Cristiano yet?
I'm taking a summer break from creaming over Messi so I'm back to shape for the upcoming season. I felt sorry for Ronaldo in that Barca game where Real was parking the bus and he was the only way pressuring, but that's as far as I can go!
I'm doing alright, thanks! I hope they resolve this NBA stuff soon, so I have something to fall back on should Ajax totally bomb the Champions League (and don't think we can't!). How are you?

Well there was nothing to cream over Messi in the Copa America :joel: The Barca and Madrid games were funny.
The NBA lockout needs to get sorted. Need my fix of D. Rose ownage. It's all about Chi-Town this year!
And as for how I am... I'm always awesome, Barry! I'm always awesome.
Nice to see you back Barry brother.
We could do with your calm influencing nature and aura around here, as it's been quite mental the last few months to say the very least.
Haha, good to see you around Hunter. I'm totally out of the (football) game world. I don't even play FIFA anymore, it's all NBA2k and some Mass Effect on the side! All looks relatively the same since I left, I guess that's all on the surface then!
