I'll probably run a game based on an anime/show/movie after this one.

In you pompinaras.

I don't think 2 weeks or so is too far away really. Gives us enough time to promote it, get the rules, organisation of it etc really down and nailed this time.

You know what we need, a Mafia Wars forum skin to promote an upcoming War for example. A really dark skin, maybe a grainey Little Italy backdrop in black and white. Would look cool as hell.

PS: I'll be all up on your anime game too bro.

Just got Paprika, Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke too. So excited to see them this coming week!

Its two weeks off, mainly because I always get requested to extend the sign up duration.

Up to you lad but I think interest in game variants has severely waned after the Wild West debacle. Last successful variant was MW IV and If I'm honest I think that was probably the games apex moment.

True. It's not that far away. Just feel it is better to have the sign up thread may a few days to a week of the start so enthusiasm is still high.

I think I said this straight after, but the Wild West War game only failed because one member was dumb enough to spoil it. Before that incident, everything was going very well. I remember one afternoon there was so much activity in the thread - more than I have seen in years on this forum.

I can't speak of the Pirates Wars though. Seems like it was just at a bad time.

Themed games don't have to be crazy, btw. You don't even have to make up roles. It's more or less just to give people a name and a character to relate to.

For example, if a character is Frasier Crane; Frasier is a psychiatrist, so maybe you'll give that member the role of tracker.

Michu

The Wild West Wars is actually something of a disappointment to me. I spent ages prepping for it developing roles around members and the thing goes tits up because of one faux pas. Problem is that one faux pas seemed to cloud some people's opinions of the game and the verve and vigour is gone.

I must say, making up roles was one of the best parts of the creative direction but I feel returning back to basics is the right move.

Got to agree with you here. Wild West Wars was awesome. Everyone really got into it, which was obvious with the large variety of western avatars and even sigs we seen. Just look the numbers; 1,661 posts and 18,254 views - and this was even with smudge dampening everyone's spirits, bless him. Despite the hiccup, WWW was a big hit for sure.

You've retained your characters name as well so a positive remnant right there ... That's what I want to achieve again, get the participants to feel an affiliation to their roles, to get the interest back ... as ridiculous as that sounds

Of course. My name now bares a triple meaning:

1) Homage to my favourite War game on this site, along with my character
2) The new interest I've taken in the man himself, from the simply sublime film to a book I bought on him and the civil war
3) It also connects with Team Rocket, with the Pokémon evil characters being named after the legend himself, albeit with one minor spelling alteration; Jessie, and James.

Awesomeness.

I must say, making up roles was one of the best parts of the creative direction but I feel returning back to basics is the right move.

In my opinion, the problem was the excessive use of special roles, it got to the point where an entire mafia organization got destroyed over night because two or three different special roles randomly rebounded against just one mafia, which in my opinion spoiled the game.

I think having special roles is much better than not having any roles, for example, I would like to play a game with the dictator role that I've discussed, just to see if it makes a positive difference to the experience, I think it certainly sounds more interesting than playing with no roles, and at the end of the day it's something we've never tried before; however, at the same time, I would prefer to play without roles if the available roles do not improve the entertainment factor for the people whom are just regular townies.

I would like to play a MW with two leading roles, the dictator role and the cult leader role, as I think the mix of those two would add a cool dynamic to the game, with the possibility of the dictator playing for the cult at some stage of the game, etc.

Also, the idea of having two pro-town dictators sounds hilarious, I can imagine the two dictators having different suspicions and creating a divide amongst the town folk, has the potential to be awesome.

That was the London Mafia Wars and specifically Chelsea11's character, as he was integral to the game I had to arm him with enough abilities to keep him alive to drive the narrative.

Yes that might sound slightly unfair but in terms of writing that is the one game that actually has a complete story to it. I can understand why some people feel it was too frenetic from a game playing sense hence the return to basics for this game.

It depends on how much time is required, really, and if there are specific times of the day that require a commitment.

Although free of the shackles of a relationship, I still have a fairly rigid set of commitments throughout the week.

I wouldn't even be in this thread if it were not for Hunter PMing me and pleading with me to join.

As for time commitments, there is likely to be some - however they can be worked around somewhat by simply leaving other members messages as to your thoughts I guess.

I guess it's safe to say right now, that you're a maybe.

It's an all week thing but don't let that deter you, if there are some nights you can't make it that's fine and dandy. Some players dip in and out (fnar fnar) like Dundon's and still contribute heartily to the game.

Mafia Wars at its peak was immense fun to be involved in and a pleasure to write for, unfortunately with all fads it had its moment, interest waned and it probably outstayed its welcome.

I can't see the likelihood of being able to recapture its original allure without somehow incorporating the Chatbox into the format.

I'm happy to scribe a Christmas Mafia Wars tale a la the original format if I can get at least 12 people involved.
