Week 38 News: Congratulations to Dragonfly and his club, Club Univ. de Hounslow for winning the innagural PESGaming Fantasy Football League, 2011-2012. Dragonfly's incredible run saw him retain a #1 position for all weeks, sharing that lead with nemesis, the Midtable Med. Wanderers, for one week.
Congratulations to all who stuck it out through thick and thin to make this an exciting league. Plenty of dialouge the entire season made my season the most interesting of all fantasy games I have played. I hope you enjoyed it as well.
No changes among table placements for this last week.

I am going to wait to post the spreadsheet results until after the transfer window closes only to avoid confusing people with how much money they are holding onto - week 4 money is not available for spending right now.

Too difficult to guess that one.I was even forced to double check L. King last night - driving home from work Neil Barnett, who semi-hosts are Sirius radio show in the U.S., said King hasn't played at all this year. But I see it was this weekend was his first insertion. I need to call in and tell Barnett what's up.

Yeah, King is very injury prone. He's a good defender but it's hard to know when he'll play. Usually he's in one game, out the next, so the chances are he won't play next week.
As long as i stay ahead of Team Rocket im all good :P

I certainly did pick a bunch of thugs - Bardsley handed a 4 game suspension today. This follows the three game suspension for Gervinho.
As long as i stay ahead of Team Rocket im all good :P
Loving the league so far though. Once Member Wars finishes, I'll probably have a little more time to get some more FL updates for Team Rocket posted too, especially now Iron's got us all back on track.
As for Ledley King, he's just very unfortunate of course. A genuinely good player, quite like Woodgate, but just raped with injuries. I hear that it does indeed take a full week for his knees to recover from playing a game, this was a year or two ago, so I imagine it's only become worse too, which is a worrying thought. King doesn't train at all in the usual sense does he? I remember reading he spends all week in pools, doing specialist leg work as opposed to the football training the rest of the team does on a daily basis. I may be wrong, but I do remember reading this a while back.
@Iron, I had Gervinho in my FL team on fantasy.premierleague.com, but given how he got himself sent off, I transferred him immediately.
A few teething problems aside its coming together well. Next season we'll have a team of people working on this to ensure continuity.

PESGaming should think about a web-application for fantasy; it seems like the bid-structure we have was a nicer addition compared to other games. I don't know how ESPN is conducted, they have an auction NFL and regular draft NFL versions but not sure about EPL. Biggest problem is that development of a web-application could cost a bit much to even consider. But the traffic to the site would be many orders of magnitude higher (if that is a goal to increase advertising dollars, etc).
It should be possible to create a macro/vba that can draw the statistics straight off the Telegraph Website. I've seen a similar one used for the Sun and its the most comprehensive spreadsheet I've ever seen in terms of work the formula's do.

I love my fox soccer channel because they deliver so much EPL in the U.S. but I have to hand it to the broadcast on ESPN2 today. Of course it is all about the game itself but they are showing food in the concession stands, the blackburn protest before the game, etc. Venky's chicken and meat pies. ESPN delivers more of the game culture.
I think PEM collected some assist points from Ramsey on that Arteta goal. at least I think that is what I saw

Sagna, but he was off for a couple of the goals, so I hope he only gets penalised for the goals he conceded when he was on.
Defenders in the Telegraph - unlike the Sun - only get penalised for goals conceded when they are on the pitch. Likewise if Arsenal were losing 2-0 and Sagna came on and the score remained the same he would get a part clean sheet (3 points)

Zamora was given too much room as he was found by Dempsey on the edge of the box, and the England striker struck the ball cleanly as it sailed into the top corner.

you have the lowest Coefficient of variation (standard dev/mean)(sorry, I'm a stat head) which shows that consistency. RVP is cooking. Happy to have Gervinho serving him up because when the season started I guessed these guys were not going to work good together. I have noticed RVP expressing displeasure with Gervinho when he doesn't get the pass and Gervinho pushes a play out of bounds. I thought there was going to be some bad tension brewing but watched replays earlier this morning to see RVP giving Gervinho the "good job" point after one of Sunday's goals.

I think it just comes down to the team selected and not the management. For instance, Matt has captured 200 of his possible 297 points this year. I have captured 354 of my 454 points this year. Army 293 of 373. I think most of us have about the same ratio of captured and missed (around 77-78% of total collected). Seems to be all about the transfer period.
There's been some fascinating stats tonight, thanks for these Iron.

It's nice to see the FL back. It was so damn popular in it's heyday - we're talking 3 Divisions deep full of teams I believe at one point. So after a few years off, having it back, and in a slightly modified form, in full swing again is great.

I am thinking we should delay our transfer window bidding until January 3rd or even a few days later. That way the early EPL moves we all expect to happen can occur and it moves it back off the holidays. thoughts everyone?
Also - the Twinkie Cup final should not be influenced by the transfer window.
I am thinking two-day bid period with some interstitial time off. Hypothetical example;
Monday-Tuesday bid (max player number to be decided), Wednesday day off and publish results...Thursday-Friday bid, Saturday publish results, Sunday off.....resume on monday. That way I don't get overwhelmed and everyone has a bit of a chance to follow easier.
Inter-team movement at any time in the window. thoughts again?

I was interested in the question are we bad in-season managers or bad auctioneers before the season began. I wanted to create a sophisticated solver to show the deviation between what we pick as managers for starting lineups each week and what the optimal pick would be based on points. Well this type of elaborate analysis will have to wait when I can find the time. I did, however, work a comparison between the average number of points per starter over the last 10 weeks at a position and the same for points per sitter.
This exercise did not produce the fruit I would have liked to see but I decided to post. I still believe it just shows we are doing a good job in selecting starting XI. You can see the relative difference between starters and sitters for each team. Bars are means, whiskers are standard deviation (e.g., you can see the wide variance for MMW's forwards as a result of Dzeko/Rooney party weekends).
It might show you where you need the most improvement as a manager (e.g., PEM's forwards or Phatmann's midfield). I added some negative value to the y-axis just to give the graphs some extra depth.
Yes = starter, No = sitter

The problem with my midfield is that they're all injured! Chung-Yong Lee, Wilshere and Cahill has now been injured on and off. It's a pain in the arse because if they were fit, they'd be decent point scorers.
IronCity
03-11-2011, 15:22
hmmmm, but what the graph shows is your MF sitters are scoring slightly more points on avg than your starters. That is the true utility of the exercise. I never verified the data but that was one of the few reversal of fortunes I saw in the information.
I also learned your keepers are doing quite good relative to everyone else. Although I probably didn't need this graph to tell me that, I have noticed you flipping between GKs rather adeptly.
I need to see who Skleptoe's defenders are after looking at graphs.

It's quite amazing that I'd done so well... considering I only have 1 player from the "so called" top teams, albeit the best player in the league, and not counting Kuszack because he hasn't even played.
EDIT: Well... 2 player from the top teams, although the other one - Johnson isn't a consistent starter.

That's strange because I've only had 5 midfielders to choose from all season as Lee and Wilshere haven't played at all. Are some of my other players considered midfielders maybe? Steven Reid could be considered a midfielder by some. Are you able to share the raw data? I'm interested in seeing which of my midfielders are gaining points over the weeks and which are duds.

I know, the only reason I chose this is because it is a singular value. I don't have anything against goals scored but then it depends too much on playing 3 or 4 defensemen. Someone should not be punished for scoring the same points but with a different alignment. Keeps are universal.

I was fortunate enough to capture Pepe Reina, so despite my second choice Sorensen rarely playing, I can always count on Reina to start, and quite often keep a clean sheet thankfully. He has solely earned 37 points this season so far.
The surprise signing though has to be Danny Graham, who has accumulated 41 points in the season thus far - only 7 points behind the magnificent Luis Suarez's contribution. Quite an impressive figure for an overlooked £3m signing.

So does Odemwingie not get points for the assist then? Because he blatantly did assist it.... it's even in the match report on BBC. I know it's probably only an extra 2 or 3 points.... but the gap is forever closing and I need to fight for every point.

I'm biting at Iron's heels, but looking at it from another point of view, Nifty's biting at my heels. Really tough, Now Team Rocket and Eggington have realized not to mess with the Army, you two are next. Watch out for a Van Persie hattrick against Everton or an Everton clean sheet for Tony Hibbert and Heitinga. If I had got the 4 clean sheets this week I'd be well ahead of Iron. We're really having some competition now and Dragonfly could be down from first place in a month or two. Robin injury would ruin my season as well as Arsenal's, his goal and two assists were crucial in me not relinquishing my lead on Nifty as well as keeping close to Iron.

Ha, I really don't know what to say about my team. They fluctuate between the highest and lowest scores every week. However, next week is the Cup game and I'm sure my team will show great bouncebackability and spirit which will end your chances of Cup glory once and for all.
Iron, great work as usual with the update this week. I wasn't sure if you'd continue with the Christmas theme but you have and it's been done well.
Excellent work Iron. Really, I want to thank you. Every week, the table is updated, and every week there seems to be a nice little brief report, with some fancy artistry along with a comical award - of which, this week definitely made me laugh (Chappelle fan here). I wasn't expecting the 'Big Ass-Titays Award".

thanks for all the compliments given above fellas. I have played NFL fantasy for over a decade but never have had as much fun as this league. NFL fantasy has gotten so stale by comparison. No chatter or banter anymore in my old hat leagues (and there is money involved).
I watched that Long goal, did a defender get his leg on that Odemwinkle's pass to nullify the assist? That is the only reason I can think of. I read the ESPN gamecast description that is written live and I didn't see a mention of it the assist all - they always annotate a goal description with an assist. Very odd however.
Now if I could only trade my team in for PEM's. I am definetly on the way down, and PEM only using 3 gears of his 5 speed. Chicharito out for 5 or more weeks, barely enough production from the rest of the Man U players on my squad. If PEM was paying attention he could be vying for the #1 spot. Shame to have all that talent go to waste.

From my point of view, you really stepped up here.
I half-stepped up to take it on from Sminky, but then life got in the way. I was putting in serious hours to this and then stopped suddenly.
But rather than let it die, you made it happen. That is big time.
I'll say this now - next season, we get 20 people in the league. Easy. The year after? Two divisions. Promotions. Relegations. Cups that both division participate in.
Squad usage and bidding with 20 people all going for squads would be excellent.
Maybe if things calm down in my professional life after the end of the year, I'll be able to get back on the organisational horse and help out more. I miss my spreadsheet. :folarm:
Nifty's on the money.
Now we've a tried and tested, working structure in place, the only way is up. It's been really quite a brilliant forum year, with even older members returning. The whole site (forum included), is on the verge of a mass design update, and with word of mouth, I can easily see the PESGaming Fantasy League developing wonderfully.
There's great potential in this, and I think we all feel it. It's the personalisation I think that really makes this league what it is. Team Rocket is my baby, and I've even named my PES 2012 ML team that name, along with similar kits. Just goes to show the impact the Fantasy League is having!
I'm really pleased how its evolved, its even better than I hoped but that is down to the great work of Nifty and now IronCity. Top work guys.

Too right. It's much more immersive than the official ones, because this is MY team. Nobody else has it. In the official ones, 1000 people could have Aguero etc, so you lose the individuality.
When it comes to match days, my first thought is "I hope Bolton don't do shit", my second thought is on my fantasy team.

Its odd that the EPL fantasy games all work as Alistair mentions above. Before Sminky put the call out here I was checking them all out because I wanted to play EPL fantasy and all were of the shared player format. Never liked that style for NFL but NFL fantasy is almost always a 'my team' approach with drafts or auctions for players and ESPN.com is the king of it in the U.S. so I was shocked, dissapointed that ESPN EPL wasn't this format as well. The principal gain of a espn server is the data management.
I wish I was a software developer because there is money to be made in creating a 'my team' format application for football. I had mentioned months ago that PESgaming could bring in a lot of customers with a customized software app.

Then let's get it done.
Whilst I was in the process of putting together the original player spreadsheet, I was always in the back of my mind thinking, "I'd love to run a fantasy football website." Obviously to put the hours in it would have to have a solid return.
Regarding the main talking point - there are games around that offer a unique squad approach; www.fantasyleague.com offer a "Professional" option which is just this, I believe. The Times offer something similar, too, I think. Actually, a couple of guys at my local pub run their own game (much like we are doing) with an auction system conducted a couple of nights per week in the boozer pre-season.
The thing is, these games work on the principle that you need a minimum of X participants to make it worthwhile (otherwise there's no competitive element to bidding etc). Because, for many, organising a large enough group to make the logistics work is difficult, this format becomes marginalised.
Those that take the time to offer this type of game tend to have it as a supplement to the 'classic' style, whereby you have a budget and can pick anyone you want (without being restricted by who someone else picks).
In all seriousness, if there is interest in this idea - I would be more than happy to try and give it a more permanent home next season. Threads and posts on a forum are OK - but a website would be the business. I've got reasonable web design skills (I'm webmaster for two sites), but I don't have the knowledge at a database-coding level, in all honesty. That being said, I've got until about June/July to learn. :smug:
IronCity
08-12-2011, 03:01
^I think the coding can get complicated but obviously not impossible. I know people that can do it but they would be expensive (their rate is $1,000/day and they come cheap). An app like a fantasy football site could take 4 or 5 days minimum. However in this day and age it is just mastery of sql databases and code language. For the latter, google open source codes provide a nice plug and play for a lot of applications. Sticking this app into a wordpress type webpage is a snap. Creating a phone app version would be another 4 or 5 days. I am contracting some folks out for this type of activity for our work so I am engrossed in it now; not the coding, I don't do that so hired someone. But then, getting a source for the football data would cost money - most of the current sites likely pay a fee to the same service data provider.
If there are sites like the one you mention that have "my club" football then it is always better to climb in the wheel rather than try to re-invent it. I can talk to these contractors and see if there are any shortcuts in the process they can suggest. They are good with "grab this prefabricated app and that prefab app" to do the job

Thought me and Phatzio's cup semi-final would've been tighter than that.
I think a couple of ill-timed tackles cost me some points that I couldn't afford to lose and my midfield was, again, non-existent.
Solid defence as has been the case a few times, but ultimately a disappointing week. Now nearing the bottom of the pile. January should come just in time for me to still be in touch, I hope.
Plus, I wrote an automatic +300 point bonus into the rules for Skleptoe & Son at the season's end whilst I was in charge.
Wow!
Team Rocket fly up two more spots this week, along with the one last week! Talk about progress. This is undoubtedly my best run of form thus far this season. Three weeks in a row with points totalling over 40 each week. If the next couple of days go in my favour, I could reach the 3rd spot.
Damn. I think I've finally found my structure with Team Rocket. It's only taken me just over 3 months.

Should be a close battle for the Cup. Could go either way.
It's funny, you look at some of the teams doing well, and some of them don't have a lot of outstanding players. I mean, I've only got Silva who you'd class as a top class player. Phats doesn't really have any in his team, but they're all pretty much guaranteed first team players - so that's pretty much 22 points each week as a base value. Plus it helps when you have a half decent goalscorer.

Too bad you didn't stick an automatic point bonus in for the semi-finals of the Twinkie Cup eh? You could've taken it if Thomas and Eagles had started in their respective matches but you really need to sort yourself out with a goalie.

Woooo! Can't believe I won! I never win anything :crymore:
I'd like to thank the supporters, who were truly excellent throughout the cup, turning out in their dozens to support the team!
SS Phatzio put up a great performance. Credit must go to their players and staff, as well as their supporters, who stayed in full voice despite getting their arses handed to them.
Looks like Phats had a quiet week despite Demba grabbing another goal. Managed to make up a bit of ground on Dragonfly. Bolton won, Utd lost, Blackburn lost, Wigan lost.... good week so far, despite my transfer misgivings. :D

Maybe you'll stop moaning about not signing anyone now eh Ali? And steer clear of Demba Ba. :folarm:

15 points. My signings need to step up next week *cough*Torres*cough*.
Congratulations Ali ... perhaps a league and cup double looms?

If we go ahead with my Champions League suggestion, I see a treble next season for me.

With the right signings, anything is possible. Dragonfly is in a strong position, and Phats has made some excellent attacking signings. Unless I buy smartly, I can see me slipping down the league a little bit.

I hope he does something with his 80million. Sad to watch it go down this way.

Week 21 News: Team Rocket!!! Manager Thomas Hunter aptly puts together a squad that means business. With Luiz Suarez away at the African Cup of Nations, :hov:
Hunter works the transfer window with skill to gain 53 points this week and bounds over two table spots. With a little help from the Graham Cracker, look out mama there's a white boat coming up the river.

On a more serious note, I'm really looking forward to preparing my squad again for the next gameweek. If I can stretch the gap between myself and the few teams below, then at least I won't be treading on thin ice. I'm confident though that Team Rocket can continue this form and really push forward now, and hopefully close the gap above too.

I'm so glad that Cesc, Phats and Dragonfly didn't pick up many points. I think I may regret not bidding for Donovan. I based it on the fact that he was shit against us..... and if you're shit against Bolton.... it means you're shit.

do you mean when does he get bumped from the league? has he been on the site recently? I should check his posts. I know he hasn't been in the league since Oct/November. Pem gone as well.
He hasn't been on in 10+ days.
Where is PEM?

The Phatmann puts his hat in the ring to be Caretaker Manager of Pijo Burro. Cole and Welbeck to SS Phatzio for £3m :shfty:
