Sweet.

Hopefully the R* site doesn't crash like it did with GTA IV's first trailer.

On another note, why can't we have all capital letters in the title? I tried editing it, but it just wouldn't work. I'll try copy/pasting it from another source to see if that works for the thread title.

Yeah it's a bit annoying!

anyway I got a feeling it will be San Andreas again or a new city like Boston. The greens got to be a hint!

Oh shit yessss!!!
The only game now i still get proper excited about anymore.
I so hope it's back to San Andreas, or a proper LA, and by the look of that logo it seems san andreas-ish to me.

I just hope there's more variety in the scenery, than there was in GTA IV. eg the countryside, and desert areas in San Andreas.

Yeah. The variety in San Andreas as you put it kept the game fresh I think, and moving through different areas was exciting - whereas GTA IV was 99% cityscape.

Being in SA's Badlands or Desert did get a little irritating after a while, but that was mainly because several missions included a huge trek, and if you screwed it up towards the end, you'd have to repeat it. The different areas themselves were a great idea, and quite a welcome change to the life of Ganton etc.

I'm sure I heard rumours a while back, suggesting R* are remaking Vice City. I wouldn't be opposed to it, especially given that I never really played Vice City except pissing about on it, as I was too young to really appreciate it - my time was spent on Crash Bandicoot, PES etc.

I wouldn't be opposed to GTA V being similar in scene to San Andreas either if I'm honest, as it still remains my favourite GTA by far.

Vice City was my favourite GTA. I put soo much time into it. I think it was simply a great game.

As with the logo for GTA V, the 'V' looks like the color of American money and the 'FIVE' font looks like it's from money too.

Makavelian

It's the same font as the 5 Dollar note.

I'll never forget this moment on San Andreas - whilst still on the first island, I decided to go on a little mission to the countryside area. Obviously the poh-leece weren't too happy about this. I'd lost my vehicle and was trecking on-foot through the woods, over a hill. Then I swung my camera around and had the awesome sight of 2 helicopters appearing from behind the trees, ready to gun me down. Made my jaw drop at the time.

It's a shame only Rockstar can make a good game like this.

What is this vendetta the dingle has with Joel?

Also, excited to see where they go with this new game. I personally think that money style V, looks nothing like it has anything to do with San Andreas. Maybe people are hoping, rather than thinking?

The bank heist was my favourite part of GTA IV. I'm expecting the new game to be better with more big setpieces.

On another note, why can't we have all capital letters in the title? I tried editing it, but it just wouldn't work. I'll try copy/pasting it from another source to see if that works for the thread title.

Try editing it to GTA Five, save, then re-edit to GTA V.

Man, I feel for you. San Andreas was the shit. It was so much damn fun. Basically, it was IV, but with worse graphics (of course), a greater variety and more exciting environments, more enjoyable missions, more fun overall, along with a better soundtrack too - that's San Andreas.

StringerBell
25-10-2011, 20:01
New Orleans is the only American city worth basing an entirely new game on that isnt a remake. The rest of the cities Boston, Chicago, Philly are poor knockoffs of NY. Maybe revisit San Andreas but I dont see them making another "remake" I want something new.

Citing anonymous sources "familiar with the game,"Kotaku
reports thatGrand Theft Auto V
will take place in a Rockstarified version of Los Angeles, one of the cities mocked up in an earlier installment in the franchise, San Andreas. We suppose the locale makes sense -- wouldn't adapting it be as easy as taking all their assets fromL.A. Noire, then applying 75 years of wear, tear and technological progress to the structures therein?

The source also claims that more than one character will be playable during Five's campaign, which similarly makes sense, considering the extra protagonists which appeared inGrand Theft Auto IV's expansions. We've contacted Rockstar, and are encasing ourselves in suspended animation for the next week or so, shortening the amount of time between us and the game's debut trailer on November 2.

I think the style of the V (i.e. US money) suggests it'll probably be in America.

This would be good, involving burrying someone out in the desert, then having to dig him up again with the clock counting down.

Sure, it'd be interesting to have it in a European city, for example. But if you have it in, say Istanbul, you'd miss out on certain staples of the GTA series. Like cultural references, cameos etc. The majority of the radio and music would have to be in Turkish to remain fairly authentic too.

Who says it's just going to be the US?

It could include areas of Canada, as a break for example quite like how they broke up the major cities in San Andreas.

Look at the genius of R* though. They post up simply the logo of GTA V, and the internet is buzzing. Guessing where the location(s) could be, and trying to make sense of the V numeral/lettering. We've already got 3 pages here in this thread on the basis of the announcement.

Best rumour i've heard (actually from a few months back and starting to be respread) is that there will be multiple characters you control rather than just one character.

So the first chapter is character one. chapter 2 etc......ten hours or so as each characters, all with there own storyline that ties into the larger overall plot. I think i'd prefer that.

It does sound quite interesting Jonno, but only if they have some significance to one another I think, otherwise it'd feel too disconnected. Maybe we'll be playing a few with lives parrallel to one another, which helps it all connect towards the end?

I do look forward to it though - a US-Mexican border game would be quite interesting for sure.

That would certainly be interesting, though there would be a danger of becoming "detached" from the characters. Also, the whole point of GTA is the whole "rag to riches" thing. I think that achieving this with multiple characters is a big ask.
I would like to see more of the RPG-esq elements from San Andreas return. From buying houses, changing your outfits and hairstyles, and making yourself fat. They're only little details, but add a bit more individuality to the game.
Perhaps a slightly branching story would also be cool. GTA IV kinda did it with the last mission, but they could build on it.

A big task, but could be awesome. I'm thinking two characters arrive in the US - perhaps one Mafioso type and the other being a Yakuza - trying to build the biggest criminal empire in the city/state, with the story culminating in an epic gang war. It could span decades.

* The protagonist is Hispanic and his name is Adrian
* It takes place in San Andreas in the year 2012. The Mayan end of the world thing is parodied a lot because of this.
* You start out in Los Santos and are in your rivals turf. Varrios Los Aztecas after getting beat up and robbed
* The game revolves around money in a big deal. I’d reveal the big idea but I don’t want to ruin it.

How old was he in Vice City? mid 20s? Which would make him 60 or so, I doubt he has a brother younger than 40..

Fair point, perhaps a son then?

I don't think the voice of the narrator sounds particularly young though.

I am expecting a Hispanic main character if they set the game in L.A, but there's no chance of him being called Adrian. If this is the case, I expect plenty of American Me and Blood In Blood Out references, including the famous painting from the latter.

Going back to an earlier point of discussion - do we have any concrete evidence yet that the game world is San Andreas and not just Los Santos (Los Angeles)? Yes we saw the mountains and rural areas in the trailer but that could merely be an extension of L.A. If we were getting San Francisco and Las Vegas, I would have expected to see the bumpy streets, Golden Gate bridge, Alcatraz, the Vegas Strip, and so forth.

Possibly this is perhaps an L.A. specific trailer, and we might see trailers for those cities further down the line, but I can't imagine that would be the case. I'm not that fussed anyway since it looks like the game will be large and varied enough as it is.

EDIT: I just watched the IGN analysis and some of their observations would suggest maybe San Andreas is fully realized...I guess the planes (especially fighter jets) would also hint at a vast world.

Hunter

Thanks for that TH. Repped.

Quite an interesting break down, but a great one too. It really analsyses the San Andreas area quite nicely, especially for us who've never been to LA, and/or don't particularly know all of the little signs and 'hang outs' for the homeless etc.

Wow. I didn't notice 'Tommy Vercetti' guy (is it him?) was in the trailer multiple times.

Also there's a gym on the beach, does that mean being having muscle or being fat is an option?

I hope they bring back the fun element of the game (Planes, all other vehicles and funny cheats etc)

edit:

I hope they bring back 'skills' where when you ranked up high enough you could duel wield weapons.

Also I'd love for the plane, bike and car schools are back.

Unique vehicles in certain locations would be cool too. Like in San Andreas there was a go cart in a shed on the top of a hill near area 51/the plane school.

NEW YORK, Nov 03, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Rockstar Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), is very proud to announce that Grand Theft Auto V is in full development.

Developed by series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto V heads to the city of Los Santos and surrounding hills, countryside and beaches in the largest and most ambitious game Rockstar has yet created.

"Grand Theft Auto V is another radical reinvention of the Grand Theft Auto universe," said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. "We are incredibly excited to share our new vision with our fans."

A bold new direction in open-world freedom, storytelling, mission-based gameplay and online multiplayer, Grand Theft Auto V focuses on the pursuit of the almighty dollar in a re-imagined, present-day Southern California.

It should be noted that everything below is rumor, subject to absolutely no validation whatsoever. Some of the things he writes do make sense, however, and should make for interesting discussion.

1: The game world is absolutely massive and will push both xbox and PS3 to the very limit in terms of what it has accomplished. Yes, the main city is simply Los Santos however is it AT LEAST 4 times bigger than Liberty City in GTA 4 and that is just Los Santos. The surrounding country side, beaches, etc are massive. For instance, we saw the main character ( an African/American, early 30's) travel by car from the center of Los Santos into the wildnerness and it took over 15 minutes. The views were incredible from farmhouses with cattle, huge wind farms, an oil refinery which appeared to be living and breathing with nearly 100 NPCs working on machinery, operating vehicles, lifting and loaded, etc, unlike the gas works in GTA 4 which seemed to only house a few NPC at a time. The forests are more beautiful than those in RDR and featured people camping, young NPC drinking and dancing around campfires, people riding dirt bikes and jumping over logs, streams, etc. The water effects, forna, plants, trees all looked beautiful.

2: The shooting mechanics have been greatly improved with animations for diving, climbing, rolling and crawling all added for better realism. The re-loading animations for new ammo also look cooler, less static.

3: There is much more climbable elements in the world such as ladders, overhand climbing, etc.

4: There are animals in the game from dogs to cattle but at this time it is not confirmed if you will be able to harm the animals. Rockstar were able to get away with it in RDR as it was a true depiction of the world in which the game was set. Allowing dogs/cattle to die in a game sent in current times may cause headaches with PETA. Its unclear if Rockstar were joking here.

5: There are planes to pilot and they can be crashed into buildings if you choose to do so....

6: Rockstar have included many, many more interior locations such as a shopping mall, college campus, police station, a huge hospital and there is also a vast underground sewer network which one mission later in the game involves a jet ski chase that culminates in a Fugitive-esque waterfall jump ( there are nods to the ridiculous but awesome Ballad Of Gay Tony missions)

7: The city is full of NPCs jogging, weight-lifting, hitting on women, being chased on foot by cops, shopping, washing cars, fixing fences, moving home, filling up their cars, etc.

REAL JUICY INFO:

1: Cars can be upgraded/repaired and it has been considered to have a car have fuel forcing the player to fill her up.

2: The dating aspect of the game is gone. You still have a cell-phone but only people you will meet in the game will call you to ask you to do a mission or to ask you to do something else before the mission.

3: Weapons include the usual arsenal you'd aspect but the flamethrowers, remote mines, laxer trip mines and claymores are included. It is possible now to pick up random objects in a street/buidling to use as a weapon. There is also a museam where it is possible to steal old age swords, axes, etc.

4: it is possible to rupture a fuel line and if you shot at the trail of gasoline it will lead straight back to the car blowing it up.

5: mini games such as bowling, darts, etc have all gone. You can play basketball, weight train, arm wrestle, gamble and cage fight, enter triatholons, water races, cannoing, ab-saling, rock climbing, base jumping, ski diving. More to be confirmed.

6: Character customisation is back but only in terms of clothing, body weight, etc. The player you start off which, much like CJ, can't be altered by race, age, height, etc.

7: Rockstar said burglary missions may return but only as part of missions and not on neigbourhood houses.

8: No children NPC at all. Ever.

9: There is now an ability to grab people and use as sheilds or in "hostage" situations.

10: The cops are much, much, much more realistic. If you kill somebody when you know there are no cops around you will not run the risk of a one star as often as you would in GTA4. The cops will use smoke and tear gas, dogs, riot gear and rams to knock down the doors of buildings you are hiding in.

11: You can enter some buildings and lock doors, push objects in the way to barricade.

12: You become better at things as the game progresses. If you only ride motorbikes then you will increase your skills, same as individual weapons.

13: Certain weapons can be customisable and some even home-made.

14: One mission involves breaking out a very familiar GTA icon from a previous game...

15: Torrential rain fall and sunshine and even tremors will appear in the game.

Pleased about the variety of trains, the chair lift (for skiing?) and the cable car. Hopefully the trains can be controlled and will be available in multiplayer. It would be something else if you could cut the wire and send a cable car to oblivion.

If they put the trains and planes in multiplayer they're off to a good start.

Also the number of boats, including a 'Whaler'...I'm seriously thinking there will be marine life in this one. Sharks, whales and giant squids would be fantastic.

Jonno394
16-05-2012, 10:41
I'm hoping the trains are controllable again, seeing as this seems to be a re-imagining of San Andres, I think it will be a given.

Jonno394
16-05-2012, 10:44
It's the Euphoria engine and asset sharing. It's been happening in Rockstar games for year.

Seems that Max Payne 3 disc holds information on GTA V vehicles.

This would not be the first time that GTA files have been found in non GTA games. Games such as Bully and Red Dead have all been cracked and inside them they to have shown to hold vehicle and other information relating to a GTA game.

It’s unlikely that this is the full list of vehicles.

Wouldn't worry too much, Rockstar are pretty good at keeping a lid on things, plus they tend not to announce in the press, rather releasing their own stuff on the net.

Add to that the recent release of Max Payne, wouldn't make sense to overshadow that with GTA news quite so soon now, would it?!? Max Payne multiplayer may also be a testing bed for GTA as well....

Based on their previous schedules, I wouldn't expect release until April/May next year, with the next big info release in the next two months...

And with the mountains and forests in this they have to do Bigfoot. I demand an angry violent one this time though, not the RDR ones which make you feel bad about killing them.

I've only just got a vehicle sleeping dogs and a bit bored, doesn't keep me wanting to play more. Bit of a tacky game when compared to GTA in terms of sandbox games.
The story lost its way a little bit in the middle but on the whole the story was epic. Some of the moments where you have to make choices were implemented brilliantly.
@Fick I think its grew up with its fans. I don't think I could enjoy San Andreas as much as I did when I was younger. There's always the alternative of playing crappy Saints Row if you prefer a less serious game.

I think GTA IV wasn't as interesting to explore as San Andreas. That's probably one of the reasons why people find it dull. If you were bored in SA, you could just spawn a jet, fly off to the bid mountain and jump off it on a bicycle. There was none of that in GTA IV, though I did still like the game in general.

TH

GTA IV sucked after finishing the story because you had a shit load of money but nothing to spend it on! 3 clothes shops, no haircuts/gym, no car mods etc.

I expect GTA V to have the same amount of things to do as GTA:SA and more.

I for one still preferred the tongue in cheek style of play, with the freedom to fuck about. Growing up is not the answer. I have played all 3 SR games and if anything they took it too far the other way. Shite story, endless dicking about. SA was the best balanced of all the sandbox titles for me.

Good point Ali. The more realistic the setting became, the less the novelty factor

This.

San Andreas had a great story, whilst being endlessly fun storyline-aside. I'd play it for the hell of it, without doing missions a lot of the time, because the core gameplay and added extras were just good old fun.

GTA IV took itself too seriously, and storyline-aside, there wasn't a great deal else to do except appreciate the environment and enhanced graphics. Of course this gets tiresome quick though. I probably reached around 30-35% complete on GTA IV before I just stopped playing.

I "will" be buying GTA V though.

That's what made this game rather ironic, as I said you had limited things to spend money on after finishing the game. All that time spent trying to get to the top then once you're there you can't buy anything!

Like near the expensive apartment you unlocked at the end there is a car dealership place. You can walk in there and steal a car but you can't buy one?!

Never played the multiplayer myself, and as everyone has pretty much said, single player was boring very quick and not much to do in the game. There were far too little missions that were actually fun or exciting. The odd cruise around the city aimlessly whilst enjoying the graphics isn't enough to warrant the money spent on it. Never finished the game and had no interest in doing so after a while.

I traded in SA ages ago, and pretty much regretted it since. That's actually the reason I bought IV. I think everyone needs to have at least one GTA in their collection, for that mood that only GTA can quench.

Hopefully this next one can combine the great graphics with great gameplay, more things to do, and spend money on.

Yeah, once I completed the game I just played free mode online.
I played it first online on the 360 but the PC was just too much fun online with the trainers where you could build a crazy race course throughout the city and so much more. The only downside was you'd get cunts spamming tug boats what made the game crash.
If you want to talk about a repetitive game look no further than Red Dead, now that is a fucking boring game after a bit. Gets so tedious travelling about on a horse unlike in GTA you can cruise round and see random gang wars if your lucky or other crazy shit going on. The ending is absolutely amazing in GTAIV.

GTA struck up a nice balance of fun with an excellent story and back story . Red Dead is to slow paced and very little random fun things to do. Travelling about on a horse is also very tedious after a bit.

GTA IV became dull, very quickly. Sure, the city and environment was nice to look at, but that's about it - because that's about all you could do in relation to it. Vibrant? Nope. Unless you count drinking, bowling and darts as revolutionary and 'fun'. They were just pointless, stripped away mini-games that added nothing to the story, nor even the environment as they just didn't relate to New York.

I loved San Andreas, and even after visiting New York, I was as you could imagine, incredibly enthusiastic about the upcoming GTA IV. It was just a big let down though unfortunately. They tried to find the balance between excessive caricature fun, and realism, and they failed.

Red Dead Redemption > GTA IV

Indeed, and when comparing the likes of horse shoe throwing, and the knife game, to GTA IV's bowling and darts, the obvious difference is that Red Dead's mini-games actually matched the environment and as such made sense. When I think of New York and the fun to be had, I don't necessarily think of bowling, darts and the odd pool game.

GTA IV's mini-games just seemed so very random, with no real bearing upon the environment and how it all ties in. Whereas with Red Dead, some of the mini-games were a part of the environment itself, and as such, they felt natural and therefore it was easier to have fun playing them.

Just because game reviewers have gave it a great score, doesn't mean that their word is bond. I am a game reviewer. We all are. Let's just have a quick look at some of the 'major' game reviewers - both IGN and Gamespot gave GTA IV 10/10. Really?

I think GTA IV being given a perfect 10 from the likes of IGN, Gamespot (and others perhaps), represents just how little weight their opinions carry in my view.

It's the equivalent of saying that a certain music artist is better than another, based upon how many units their last albums sold.
