Never been a fan of dubstep and can't understand the hype surrounding it. Always viewed it as a more mainstream genre, a poorer relation to the more progressive Nu Skool Breaks.

The problem Dubstep has its trending now very much how Speed Garage did in the mid 90s. I remember Armand Van Helden all but launched the genre single handedly with his bass heavy remixes, Spin Spin Sugar being the most notable. It gave birth to so much cheap and mass produced dross to flog compilation albums.

Below are two video's from Hybrid back in the day (1999), you can hear their influences in Dubstep records today.

If you listen carefully, you can hear the chopped up beats and stretched synths that you would consider hallmarks of Skrillex for example.

Sonic grinding and stretching is actually something BT has been using since 1995, Hybrid tweaked it to fuse orchestral arrangements.

Dubstep is a mish mash of Breakbeat and electro. It's just too cheesy for me though.

I have reached the last level, I look back on it as a philosophical journey through the meaning of listening to something to gain a response within one self.

Level 1: All of them
Level 2: All except for New School EDM
Level 3: Post-Punk, Post-Rock, Folk
Level 4: Art Pop, Ambient
Level 5 and 6: Harsh Noise, Wall Noise

Moved to the 'Music' section in the Entertainment forum.

As for Dubstep, I don't mind some of it. I don't really go out of my way to explore the genre much, but there's some of it that's not too bad, and can be quite good for a specific Dubstep night out.
