View Full Version : 2012 London Olympics
I'm surprised there's no thread on this!? London must be very at this time and the opening ceremony is a day away. Nobody excited?
What particular sport or athlete would you be following? The 100m races always fun.
Best chances of gold for Greece would be in Taekwondo. Not in basketball which we are actually good at but failed to qualify in
Can't wait to see what the opening ceremony would be like, always a huge highlight. Beijing's use of technology in the last Olympics was incredible... incredible!.
I don't think Beijing's opening ceremony will be topped for a long, long time.

The closing ceremony in Beijing with the London bus was absolutely shocking.
I can't really be bothered to watch the opening ceremony. Fireworks and daft parades, with stupid people on the television saying things like "Paraguay is bordered by Botswana and Iceland and has cheese as the symbol of its flag" with even more fireworks, and constant shots of washed up celebrities who are unfortunately still around, and have to use this moment to milk maximum attention, as no one gives a shit about them normally, complete with more crap fireworks. Its a no go for me.

It's gonna be a bit shit.
I wanted to see the parade of athletes from every country (assuming this still gets done) but I have to go out drinking tomorrow. Yes, have to - I'm not in the mood but I've made a promise to someone :<

Well at least there's the actual sports to look forward to then. I'm wondering if London can pull the whole event off... I mean it's not like they owe the world a show but this happens every 4 years so I hope it will be good. Kind of the same feeling I get when the World Cup is about to start, although of course it's much better.
I'm out for a meal tomorrow night, but will record it and watch it as soon as I get home, like a sad bastard.
My bosses daughter saw the rehearsal of the OC on Monday, and was very impressed by it. Hopefully the real thing is decent.

I saw the torch yesterday. It was shit.
When the torch was going through the valleys, I drove through it's intended route about 20 minutes before it was due to arrive. About a mile and a half of the streets lined with people, all waving and cheering.
I pretended it was all for me, and started regally waving out of the window to them all.
Only one person responded.
My interest in the Olympics was severely dented when I found out Shelly Jenneke wouldn't be there. I'm not sure even the Women's volley ball will be able to provide the same raw sex appeal.

Pah, don't get me started on that. I'm English, not British :folarm:
Really nonplussed about the whole thing. Have to say I was intrigued by the USA's women's goalkeeper, but even the possibility of some pleasant lady-flesh cannot garner any excitement for the event.
Won't be going out of my way to watch any of it.
No I agree but all sense and purposes for the Olympics and it being the first time there's a GB football team you'd have thought they'd try to ignore the whole separate states.

Well seeing that they are using "God Save The Queen" as the anthem, I guess they still want to play the home nation card.
Surely that irks the Welsh players in particular having to hear that belted out over the tannoy?
Depends how nationalistic they are I guess.

From one culture to another,
that was by far the worst opening ceremony I have ever watched, at least everything before the olympians came out. Did they let some cheesy american producer take over? I'm not taking digs at you guys but watched with a few people and also part of it in a chinese restaurant with the entire building making jokes.
cut away, pre-recorded scenes just don't work. James Bond was a complete flop (animated churchill statue waving to him was over the top). Imagine a roomful of people here with their hands over the mouth in shock of how bad it came off. The aristocrats with top hats walking around looking at smokestacks with horrible choreography was pointless, no idea what the cell phone love story was supposed to be about. Pre-recorded Beckham riding up the thames was pretty bad. Luckily Sir Paul saved the end. The show had about as much imagination as a meat pie.
oh wait, the artistic director is being interviewed on tv right now....bravo, pull him off the screen with a cane.
Fuck me you're a miserable bastard Iron
I thought it was one of the better opening ceremonies I've seen, usually they're boring as fuck but it focused on aspects of British history and culture without being dour.
The James Bond and Queen segment was clearly tongue and cheek so I think you might have missed the point on that one, you'll get no argument with me on the love story via mobile angle, that was fairly dire but to to be fair it was merely to show case 50 years of music from Britain, the early stuff without question some of the finest music in history.
The industrial chimneys for the raising of the Olympic rings with Branagh, what was so shit about that?! It was representing East London industry. I thought that worked and the firework spectacle was awesome.
I think culturally all the references work for us, who in live in England/Britain, but clearly not for other countries. It would be me like looking for faults in an American opening ceremony just because I couldn't understand the cultural history, although to be fair I imagine yours would include the British anyhow, the gaining of independence etc.
I'm with Sminky I quite enjoyed it.
Trust an American to take the whole Bond thing serious :D
End was a let down for me. How many times has McCartney played that song this year? Sound fucked up too.

Yeah, completely agree, The Hey Jude at every event wheel out is getting a bit daft.
It would have been nice for McCartney to play something else, this would have been perfect to end the night.

One of the only things that annoyed me was the Queen, could have looked a bit more enthusiastic when it was Team GB's turn to come out.
Great show though. The bit at the beginning where they went through the industrial revolution was top notch.

Think it's got something to do with the president of the IOC / the French man who made that speech after Seb Coe.
French is the first language of the IOC, goes back to when it was formed, in french speaking Switzerland. It doesn't matter where the games are held, some sod will always be speaking in French. Did you notice, due to the transient nature of the English language, that some words were spoken in English during the french announcements, it was akin to some hilariously bad dubbing
"Les forces armées et The Royal Airforce" ... I'm guessing the French announcer had an issue saying L'Aviation royale du for whatever reason, or we we're very 'brand' specific about the Royal Airforce in Britain.

i liked parts but the pop culture shit was godawful and should be nuked into orbit.
athens 2004 and beijing 2008 - NOW THOSE WERE REAL OLYMPIC CEREMONIES

industrial revolution, NHS, gosh - it was all brilliant. loved the segment with the olympic rings. mr bean and the orchestra - great.
but fucking harry potter? lord of the rings would have been better.
half the pre-recorded shit was stupid as well. where was stonehenge? king arthur? merlin? there should have been a 50ft firebreathing dragon. now that shit is impressive.
you see, athens ceremony was magical. london was just some real bad performance. The beginning of the london ceremony was awesome, but the awful love story and dizzie rascal ruined it, as well as the stupid rock music towards the end.

I only tuned in at the 'official' start time of 9, but there was supposedly farm animals and such on the grass before they took it apart after 5 minutes. What a wasted intro.
Bond/Queen & Mr Bean were great fun, but they had too many pre-recorded videos. Jumping out of the helicopter in daytime on the vid, night time in reality..
The forging of the rings was good, and the Olympic cauldron was awesome. The pop culture part was embarrassing though, and the Arctic Monkeys can fuck off.

I still need to finish watching the opening ceremony, especially this 'cauldron' stuff and the Team GB parade. I only saw the first maybe 2 hours.
But honestly? I was definitely impressed. I expected quite a disaster, but the opening hour was excellent I thought. The agriculture and industrial revolution scenes were really well done, and felt authentic and heartwarming too. I think we put a unique stamp on the opening ceremony, and the tribute to the NHS was nice.
The parade of nations, of course, fairly boring, but I'm going to finish watching through it all soon, or at least the final hour or so.
I can understand why people from other countries may not have appreciated or simply understood the opening ceremony, but as a British person, I think it was a fair representation, with decent organisation.

Ah yes, the short mobile phone segment. An attempt to display development in technology, but, weren't the UK one of the first to develop the text-messaging phenomenon? I'm positive that when I went to the US as a kid (fortunate I know), texting just didn't exist over there like it did here, which surprised me. But yes, that segment wasn't particularly great.
The Mr. Bean part? Utter brilliance. When his face popped up onto the screen, I immediately burst out laughing. It's a shame we didn't see the original rusted green Mini Cooper with a seat roped to the top.
Yeah tribute to the NHS was good, even though the current Government are trying to dissolve it..

I think its a question of culture, some national traits just do not translate, like our deadpan sense of humour.
I felt it was a decent opening ceremony, it made you realise despite being such a small island the cultural impacts we've had on science, industry and entertainment. It was one of the few occasions you could feel proud of your nationality.

Well said. I didn't want to go that far regarding your last point, but I did feel a little bit of that somewhat. Which is quite rare, so it was a strange feeling to be honest - but it was... nice.

What felt rewarding was that only days before that absolute homophobic leftie plank Mitt Romney, had been spouting nonsense about London's capability to host the Olympics. Well I hope he feels suitably embarrassed, I think the opening ceremony showed some fantastic moments of ingenuity.
Its not easy to cater for the multitude of demographics in Britain, we're an incredibly ethnically diverse nation but Boyle did a bloody good job in trying.

Bangladesh over 100 million people only sent 6 athletes
I've watched a few women's beach and women's indoor volleyball games today - still got Italy-Dominican Republic (indoor) on here.
In beach volleyball, I saw the Czechs make a brilliant comeback against Austria and Brazil destroy Mauritius (the latter in 30 minutes).

The opening ceremony was a mixed bag, some bits were excellent others they missed a trick and others were simply dire. The cauldron and forging of the rings were fantastic, as was the NHS and children's literature section. I liked the Bean and Bond segments but thought the former was a little too long (a recurring issue) and the latter could have made use of other actors who had played bond. Great to see Sir Tim Berners Lee as well.
McCartney is a legend but it was very anti-climatic after the lighting of the cauldron. This is one of the areas I thought was very disappointing, it was the right idea but executed poorly. It should have been a collection of legendary musicians, Paul McCartney, Brian May, Elton John whoever. Play a mix of their songs or a medley and then finish with Hey Jude (as unfortunately 90% of the crowd wanted it). Would have seemed more of a climax.
I did not like some of the initial scenes regarding the industrial revolution as it didn't seem right. Allowing the Arctic Monkeys and Dizzee Rascal to perform was a disgrace.

I agree with pretty much all of the above, although I really enjoyed the industrial revolution scenes, and thought they pulled it off well.
The let down for me as well, was primarily the inclusion of the musical choices. They just felt forced, and it didn't really come together as well as they probably imagined - as for Dizzee Rascal and the Arctic Monkeys? Anyone can buy a ticket for about a tenner and see them perform at a local club, so why they were given such time at the Olympic games is beyond me.
But overall, I genuinely enjoyed it. I was half-expecting it to be very cringeworthy, and I imagine a lot of others were too. I finished watching it last night though, and I'll definitely be replaying the first hour of the opening ceremony again. Afterall, this is probably once in a lifetime, so I might as well appreciate it while it lasts! It was most certainly a unique ceremony, and the British sense of humour came across quite well I thought.

And for the record Original nobody wants to hear Paul sing 'Hey Jude' to cap a major public event for the umpteenth time. It's high time the old cunt fucked off.

Yeah, I'm sick of Paul McCartney. This is completely due to my time at university though, in which a housemate would absolutely rape The Beatles Guitar Hero 24/7 to the point of driving me insane. I can no longer listen to The Beatles and Paul McCartney without it even slightly annoying me.

Hope Solo proved to me she acts like she looks - like a little spoiled princess
She went on a twitter rage after their win over Colombia about NBC announcer Brandi Chastain
"Its 2 bad we cant have commentators who better represents the team&knows more about the game."
Solo also told Chastain to "lay off commentating about defending" and goalkeeping "until you get more educated" and "the game has changed from a decade ago."
"I feel bad 4 our fans that have 2 push mute,"
Well Princess Solo, Brandi has a Women's world cup under her belt as a world class female defender, and a game winning/cup winning penalty kick against China.

He sets the pace. Basically, if he wasn't there, it would be more of an endurance event, so he keeps the pace down for the opening few laps (they can't pass him) and raises it gradually until he moves, and this leads to the race being more tactical rather than just a test of stamina.

yes, there has been a lot of complaints. Our local TV station actually set up a blog to allow people to complain. Plenty of live events but they hold out the biggest "sellers" for primetime. When you guys were watching Usain Bolt set an Olympic record I was watching equestrian. Not a single Phelps swimming event played before 11pm east coast time. I can understand weekdays but not weekend; should be open air on weekends. Not sure if I complained here or on chatbox, but one of the NBC olympic channels was showing beach volleyball the other night.....but it wasn't Olympic beach volleyball, it was a game in California.

Think it was something to do with how people weren't sure if it was the same Usain Bolt that everyone saw 4 years ago in Beijing; also he's had a few injuries, and also there was that false start farce at the World Championships. Also with the emergence of Yohan Blake, I think the message was just to tell everyone that he's still the daddy and people were wrong to doubt him.

I liked both the opening and the closing ceremony. I just wish those damn pop musicians would shut the fuck up and let someone who can actually sing get the mic.

I heard it was a bit poo. When I knew One Direction were playing, I realised I wanted no part of it. Things like that aren't really my thing. I liked the opening ceremony, because it was something original and different. When it goes down the lines of Dizzie Rascal, and bloody X-Factor contestants I don't like it. The closing ceremony of an Olympics is unique, a once in a life time thing. Having bands and singers you can see any old time, seems like a bit of a cop out to me. I would have watched if I knew it was some kind of mini version of the opening ceremony, obviously different from what we saw. But hey, what do I know about these things.

Jessie J should've have been performing once, never mind twice. 1 direction, Tinie Tempah and Russell Brand can fuck off too (although Russell Brand wasn't that bad tbf). Aside from that, it was pretty awesome and the Who finished it off really well. I'm glad we didn't get Paul Mccartney singing 'Hey Jude'...again
BORIS dancing :excited:
LENNON :excited:
BELLAMY :excited:
Can't believe they didn't just go with Mercury. What a fucking terrible decision to let Jessie J cover that.

Isn't Mercury...you know...dead?
Thank God Lennon is alive, huh?

But tbf, if I recall correctly, they didn't have anyone performing live during 'Imagine', whereas they had Brian May, who I thought was awesome, performing during 'We Will Rock You', so it may have been a bit difficult to have a recorded version and a live version being played at the same time.
I agree with you that it was a terrible decision to have Jessie J doing it btw.

Yeah, fair do's on that, I guess.
Sucks that there were only a few good moments in a sea of garbage tonight.

I thought it would never end... did the song used to be that long?

I only saw towards the end of the cermony.
Highlights were.... err...... those angels, particularly the mixed-race lass.
Lowlights were pretty much everything else. Jessi J can sod right off.... I can't stand her!
I heard that One Direction mimed? Did anyone else mime? Any good acts in the early stages?

Is it just me, or is that probably the most overrated pop song of all time? Not saying it's not a good song, but I just can't see how it's revered as the ageless classic that always ends concerts and events.

A number of artists mimed - often not completely, but at least for parts.
And Brian May really needs to have greater respect for his property. I've joked before but he really has no shame in who he assists in destroying Queen songs. Paul Rodgers is fine but collaborating with the likes of Five and in last night's debable is unforgivable.

My dad wan't it played at his funeral. :erm:

Yeah, he didn't sound great. I liked the additional orchestral accompaniment to the song though.
Only saving grace was Roger Daultry and Pete Townshend.

'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life' was the best thing about the closign ceremony.
Ironic how Jessie J sung 'Price tag' in a Rolls Royce
+
The Who
Fatboy Slim
Eric Idle
Muse
Brian May's hair
Take That (must've been hard for Barlow)
-
Cunt Gallagher
Emile Heskey Sande
One Direction and other talent show rejects
Ray Davies (voice is gone)
Russell Brand
Meh the rest. The Brazilian segment was probably the best bit :cringe:

to put a close on the closing ceremony
NBC frustrated fans once again on Sunday when the network decided to interrupt its coverage of the 2012 Olympics closing ceremony to air an hour-long preview of an upcoming comedy series.
Throughout the 2012 London games, NBC had been promoting its new fall comedy "Animal Practice." In fact, the network had to apologize for the ill-timed placement of one such spot, which featured a monkey on gymnastics rings, immediately following Gabby Douglas' gold medal performance in the women's gymnastics individual all-around competition.

Emile Heskey Sande? Is that the woman who sings "Next to me" or whatever? I didn't see her in the ceremony but I don't mind that song.
Right now, I'm predicting the Brazilian opening ceremony to be not very well organised, but feature a lot of busty scantily-clad women doing the samba..... and Pele.

I've always fucking despised that song. I find the audacity of being told "It's not about the money" by a 22 year old millionaire absolutely fucking tooth chipping. If it's not about the money, then give everything that song made to charity, twat.
Sadly Ali, One Direction are already known worldwide. They done well in America.

So fucking harsh.
It's like a footballer saying he doesn't play the game for money but for the love of the game and she's saying she doesn't sing just for money, but money follows success.
Just a bitter and twisted jealous cunt aren't ya Matt ?

But even worse, I never heard of either of them. I try to stay hip but find on most accounts but find that I am not. I had to google those artists while reading the chatbox comments to find who they were. BTW, the chatbox was leagues better than the ceremony itself.
I really do get a laugh when I hear the Stern show play the top 5 music list - aside from it being horrible music, and aside from all the songs being auto-tuned, I never know the artists. I am much more of a Pitchfork.com man than a Billboard top 10 man.

NBC's coverage has seemingly been awful, but regarding the second point brought up - there was really nothing wrong with it.
The upcoming comedy series is Animal Practice right? These adverts include animals right? Obviously. The reason this 'issue' has been brought to light, is probably mostly due to over-sensitive people and also illogical thinkers.
So, young 16-year old Gabrielle Omar wins a gold medal. The advert that comes on after the event just happens to be of a chimpanzee who is on the Olympic high rings (I believe). Now, I'd say it's the people who actually draw the comparison between Gabrielle and the chimpanzee that are potentially silly. These adverts are pre-arranged days, weeks, even months in advance, so there was clearly no malice involved. Not to mention, if someone at the head office suggested pulling the advert at the last second, wouldn't that in itself represent that person drawing the comparison, whether consciously or subconsciously?
It's been blown way out of proportion anyway.
