PES 2013: My Thoughts

PES 2013: Change

It’s hard to believe E3 is on us gamers again. June is always an exciting time for PES fans as it usually is the first time we see actual game play. I am genuinely surprised Konami have released info so early this year. I know the teaser trailer was just that, a teaser, but the last few days Konami have kicked into overdrive with the details. I am sure by now all my fellow PES fans have read enough about Player ID, Full Control and Advanced AI to know exactly what Konami is claiming PES 2013 will offer so I am not going to go through all the details that countless websites have discussed to death.

What I will offer, is my opinion on PES 2013 and Konami.

I love PES. I am not loyal to Konami and certainly don’t hate Fifa. I thought Fifa 10 was one of the best football games ever and seriously worried for Konami and the future of PES. But I always get more enjoyment from PES. I just prefer the unpredictability, the addictiveness of Master League, the infuriating last minute goals you concede, the jump for joy last gasp winners, unearthing the next superstar and shaping a team into world beaters, beating a friend so bad he punches you and all the rest. Konami have let a lot of people down since PES 6, there is no arguing that. But I really do believe it gets a raw deal. PES 2012 is one of the most underrated sports games ever. Ok, it’s too fast, the shooting is hard to master, the goalkeepers are poor and sometimes the scripting could reduce Roy Keane to tears. So why do I think it’s the best PES yet? Am I mad? Am I naive to be enjoying PES 2012 more than any other game out at the moment? No, the question I ask is this. Is PES REALLY that far behind fifa? Is it behind at all?

PES 2013 looks great. From what I have seen, it seems Konami are finally turning the corner and actually listening to the fans. They started with PES 2011, improved the input of feedback with 2012 and are building on it again with 2013. Fully manual shooting and dynamic first touch have been called for years ago and they look promising. The Player ID has been getting rave reviews from everyone. CVG have said Ea should be worried. Konami seem confident. Hype is turning into proof. Ping pong passing is being replaced with slow creative build up play. Skilled players will be able to trounce newcomer. No more pick up and play. Konami are onto something. They have set their entire marketing behind the tagline “Talk is cheap”

I don’t want an overhaul. I don’t want stupid gimmicks. I don’t want new nets or fully rendered crowds. I don’t want silly modes.

I want a solid fully featured Master League with proper training and tonnes of depth. I want proper shooting, players who can create moments of magic and as little scripting as possible.

I want a hardcore football game that makes me learn and kicks my arse when I make a mistake. Too many people are afraid to learn a game. They want to pick it up, be good and go online to act the dick. Konami needed to change their route. Reading through the features, they seem to be going back to their roots. A few weeks ago, I made a list of improvements I wanted in PES 2013. Konami have hit them all dead on. The King could well and truly be coming back to challenge for its throne. The question is, will fifa fans give it a chance?

Seabass has give up on Pes 13, that sum up how bad that game gunna b, Seabass allready developing how 2 destroy Pes 14, all arise has Seabass enters.

  2. realist says:

last 3 articles have had 4 comments in total, what has happened to this site, i remember coming on here and the comments being constructive and running into treble figures, sad reflection.

pes 2012 was the best ever.

  3. Barry says:

    @Seabass

Change is good. A new artistic direction is needed. Seabass is concentrating on PES 14 which will have a new engine, Fox Engine, which is rumoured to have been built for a rumoured Metal Gear Solid 5. Pes 2012 was a good game, Pes 2013 will be an updated PES 2012 with further playtesting and refined gameplay.

  4. Barry says:

    @realist

Ya man, its a pity. Are people really not interested in PES anymore. Even when its getting back to the classic PES goodness? I really enjoyed PES 2012 too man. Seriously underrated. Pity

  5. Lucifer666 says:

I’m sorry but I just got to ask…why is everyone getting so excited about names or terms that they have put unto features that I thought has been worked on every year ‘Player ID’ for example…am I am going mad or has player individuality such as running a certain way a big star does not already been showcased on previous PES editions? ProActive AI is another …is that just not them saying we have improved the AI which is said EVERY year? Konami are a terror for this giving us fancy promotional names for basic tweeks that are changed or improved for each edition

    @ Barry
I completely disagree with you I think its the worst thing ever, From what we have seen so far I see no artistic change in this new addition to ‘PES’ AT ALL even down to the promotional element, this new guy has obviously learned everything he knows from Seabass which quickly leads me to the worst part of this… Seabass away working on future development of the franchise for the eventual move up to the new consoles?? I can think of nothing more disastrous!.. PES’s move up on the PS3/XBOX360 was almost fatal to the series I fear his leadership again doing this could be ultimately cataclysmic. I just can’t stress how important these decisions that are been made now are to the future of this game….for those like myself who want to see a great PES game in the future…its scary!
As for Pes 2013 being an updated PES 2012 with further playtesting and refined gameplay hasn’t every past edition lately been that since its move up to the next gen consoles? As true maybe as that statement may be its definitely not something to get excited about

As for people not commenting here or interested I think thats a fair reflection of a hell of alot of fans knowing that they are hearing the same old rhetoric from Konami’s promotional campaign every year which usually just builds up to disappointment

  6. Seabass Out says:

People r interest in Pes, but thee game in decline, Konami standards r at rock bottom, Pes 10 was good, Pes 11 was great, Pes 12 was a shockers, Golies, passing, shooting, Tackling, referees, etc, all went worse, Pes 12 they where talking about improving online 2 stop cheats, yet nothing was improved, they added another option 4 cheats instead with dummy players, I lost faith in Konami.

  7. Ziggy says:

I have to agree with Lucifer666 and Seabass Out. PES and Konami have stuffed this game up completely.
The videos they showed are crap and show no improvements. Robotic movements and graphics. Every year they promise us changes, improvements and listening to feedback but it’s still the same crap.
Not one PES on the new Gen (PS3 or Xbox) are up to scratch.

What kills me is, don’t these developers play the final product and say “Wow, this is crap”…

  8. moatstar says:

i 2 thk pes 12 was the best 1 yet. sure it had faults but every pes has and always will. i no i sound like a broken record but all the people who comment on here sayin negative things every time thrs a post r either 10 year old or need 2 just stop playin if thy h8 it tht much. if i bought a gm and felt the need 2 tell every1 how sh it it was all the time id stop plyin it.just the 1 rant frm me 2day and u can write this in stone ANY 1 WHO USES AUTO FREEKICK 2 SCORE IS A C**T i can accepct the ronnie/messi run boys and the triple tap crosses and the hacking u down whn ur clean through thts just part of the gm but AUTO FREEKICK GIVE ME A FU**ING BREAK

  14. Allieballie says:

what the ****,again posting don’t work

  15. Lucifer666 says:

    @ moatstar
With all due respect to you I don’t think we should be stopping any negativity, as you call it, its essential for any gaming franchise to improve their game they need to be listening to fan feedback. Of course there are the few who come on just to spam basically but the majority I reckon are just so frustrated now which I can understand completely. You say we all must be 10 year olds? I say many like myself who are much older have been buying this game and been fans for well over ten years which surely should give anyone the right to say his or her opinion on the matter.
You do realise too when you refer to those ‘always negative people’ that there is another side of that coin namely those who are ‘overly positive’ and in a way IMO can be much more damaging to the future of the series in particular when they attach compliments upon something unchanged or medicore and declare it groundbreaking or amazing.

  16. Fook pes fook konami fook seabass fook you says:

Seabass taking a backseat?? PES has fallen behind,The guy should be fooking sacked.!!

    Fook you Barca Boys!

  17. Seabass Out says:

moatstar, sum u up, clueless, auto FK on a 1v1 online game, yet u call thee best Pes ever, probs 1st Pes u been ever been able 2 play, Mr 4 Bars.

  18. micky p says:

pes12 is best footy game yet………how do i know……..cos ive played them all and i mean them all……..ever

its not perfect …….neither is ‘game of thrones’……..but so far its best……..pes13 is going to be pes12 refined imagine pes5 to pes6.

Pes fans are getting older and busier so dont have time to post or read posts, advertising is why fifa beats pes.
These negative guys on here are not pes fans, me and my mates would not slate pes 12 cos its great. There brainless god knows what there playing…..with themselves probably

  19. Lucifer666 says:

    @ micky p
Please don’t put this game with Game of thrones after all that show/books is not afraid to take risks, change things up and improve upon itself unlike Konami who just want to offer the same thing with tweeks every time
I do take issue with you stating because I’m saying things that only appear negative to you that I’m not a PES fan you couldn’t be more wrong I’ve been a fan since the International Superstars of Soccer days right up to now but remaining quiet or suggesting that this is anyway new or exciting for fans is wrong.
Listen if this game comes out later in the year and is great there will be nobody more than me who will be absolutely delighted but mark my words its not going to happen, you can tell already from the trailer and by the way Konami are talking. And trust me I get no pleasure saying this however these things do have to be said

  20. Dave O says:

@ Lucifer666 – Actually the Player ID is brand new. There’s never been distinct animations and moves for star players like this.

As for Seabass working on next gen, isn’t what your saying contradictory? You say you’re scared about the next gen, but to me it’s actually a great move for Konami to have recognized this and taken actions to get a head start this time.

Anyway, the trailer actually sits pretty good with me. I want to see real gameplay though, not quick dramatic cuts, but the way the game moves certainly is impressive. I’m especially liking the dribbling. They finally seem to have removed the yo-yo on a string effect, where in the past the ball animation was just tacked onto the player running animation. It really looks proper now for the first time, where the ball is a separate entity, not a bonus animation just added onto the movement of the player. I’ve been looking for them to get that right for a long, long time now and so finally seeing it in action is promising to me in terms of the overall gameplay experience we might be getting with PES 2013. My expectations aren’t sky high, but seeing the dribbling finally being handled properly is getting me thinking it might be a good year…

  21. Barry says:

hey lads, the new trailer is up, the official one is on my channel:

    @lucifer

I understand your anger mate, but I can’t really addto it because I like PES 2012. It is great. I have some matches recorded that are classic PES. I know there are frustrating things about it, but they are tiny things to fix. PES 2013 will be a slowed down, more balanced game. Think PES 2012 without ping pong passing, an actual need for skill in even controlling a pass, fully manual passing any height or power, 30% slower paced than PES 2012 and manual shooting. Cant understand how that wouldnt be appealing.

    @seabass

I like PES 2012 too. PES 2013 demo is getting rave reviews, some claiming it back to its best.

  22. Andy says:

Hello guys! personally i think pes12 is one of the greats with the new gaming options like football life and training….
although i miss some features from our older games, as: stadiums, choice of referees, choice to switch of the intro and etc.

things that could be improved. as i enjoy RPG’s i’d enjoy it a lot more if we had more interactivity on FL, like use the money, interact with the fans, have requests, feedback the manager, talk to fellow players.

well that’s all I have to say! all the best to all!!!

  23. Barry says:

    @moatstar

I enjoy PES 2012 but MLO is crap. Thats sorted by taking the anonyomitiy out of PES 2013. PES 2013 will be better online, unless you want to be known in real life as a cowardly cheat. You get 3 chances and then banned.

    @daveO

Hey mate, player ID is brilliant to see. Such a change and really works. The dribbling is tighter more refined and really completely overhauled. No more speed through teams.

  24. Dave O says:

@ Barry – Can you explain more about what you’re saying about MLO in PES 2013? What do you mean about the banning? Can you be more specific?

  25. Anonymous says:

@lucifer i gt ur point m8 tbh i was refering mor 2 the people who com on and say FUC K SEABASS FUC K KONAMI etc . u on the other hand r providing constructive criticism so i wdt say u r being negative as thrs a difference . as 4 being 2 positive all i can say is ive pld evry pes on ps2 and ps3 2 death and imo its improved wth every version. granted nt the same amount of improvement every time bt 4me thy gt better. i understand the problems people hav wth pes 12 and il be the first 2 admit it aint perfect buy anymeans i cud write a book about wht fuks me of about it as im sure we all cud . but and heres wer i may differ frm other people i LOVE IT i crnt stop plyin it and 4me despite all the flaws its still gt the same pes magic tht ive always loved beating in its heart.

tht was me above was writing on ps3 and 4got 2 put me name in DOH
@ seabass out . auto freekick is a massive flaw in the game but its the players choice 2 use it wat im basicely sayin is if u choose 2 use it thn u a cu nt. i understand thts a bit vulger so il put it another way i love scoring on pes and 2 be honest i dnt give a fuk how it goes in every goals great when its ur team scoring thm but il draw the line at letting the computer do it 4 me if ur gonna do tht u might aswell just ply coach mode. as 4 this been the first pes i can ply ur wrong thr 2 because im **** at this 1 aswell …. dam i wish thy had a setting 4 ten bars id defo use tht .

    @ Dave O

Quote Dave O “Actually the Player ID is brand new. There’s never been distinct animations and moves for star players like this.”

Well I hope your right and it at least feels new but in fairness this is a feature that I assumed Konami were already implementing throughout the years after all how can you create a proper football simulation without having players looking and acting some way real to me this is just like Konami saying (promotional style) ‘We are trying to get a more realistic game by improving the realism of the players’ like its almost like a no-brainer improvement, something you expect to happen and definitely not something that excites or surprises.

Quote Dave O “As for Seabass working on next gen, isn’t what your saying contradictory? You say you’re scared about the next gen, but to me it’s actually a great move for Konami to have recognized this and taken actions to get a head start this time.”

No!……With all due respect do you really believe that the reason Seabass and Konami failed last time was because they didn’t start earlier or get a head start? I don’t nor do I believe having that this time will make any difference, its Seabass himself thats the problem if you ask me I don’t believe he knows how to move this game forward from a ps2 type game but hey time will tell I suppose

As for the trailer do the people in the stands not bother you at all that they haven’t really been changed or improved now in years? It also hints that if they haven’t touched this that the commentary hasn’t been touched either and it will be the same old crap lines spouted out. Both of these features some may say are unimportant but its about creating realism of a match day or season and these elements are crucial IMO yet Konami don’t realise or just don’t bother…

Will Seabass be thinking about this when he’s planning the future game? Its a concern for me!

The truth is I think we are coming into this with different outlooks, you seem to focus on gameplay improvement like many on here and although I want to see that too ultimately its the overall feeling of being a real football manager or player that I want from the game with players, fans, cameramen, linesman, etc and commentary constantly changing and looking or sounding real…all of which haven’t been improved upon since the ps2 days

    @ Barry
Let me put it this way to you……..You were watching a sequel to a film,… in this movie they got better actors this time, Great! right? The problem is its the same old plot, the same dire lines churned out by the leads,… now imagine someone saying this acting is amazing and that they “Cant understand how that wouldnt be appealing.” in other words this game needs more than improved gameplay

    @ Moatstar
Fair enough mate and hey everyone’s different I suppose,… I can only tell you all what I want and expect from the game.

  30. Stevie Bee says:

This game sounds very promising, id all but given up hope with PES but I found a site that removes all the Barca Boy’s and lets everybody compete in a fair league. Their are a fair few spare teams available in the leagues at the moment so I thought it wouldnt do anybody any harm to post the link here, their are four divisions, Spanish,English,French,Italian. They have removed the top 6 sides from each respective nation and whats left is 14 teams in each who play each other twice, the best bit is you rate/ get rated on your fairness rather than your ability! If you win 10-0 nobody cares! If you lose 8-0 nobody cares! All they care about is having a good, decent game, I urge you guys to have a look. Thanks for writing the interesting article too.

    http://proevoeliteleagues.co.uk/projectpeel/

That is the website, I know how happy I was when I found PEEL, and judging by the comments above Im sure you guys would fit in brilliantly.

  31. Dave O says:

@ Lucifer – Good on you for admitting we have different outlooks. I appreciate that you can recognize that as opposed to trying to tell me that your perspectrive is right and everyone else is wrong. And yes, gameplay is tops for me, mostly because I find that the rest (including commentary to a degree) gets repetetive and something you don’t really notice no matter how good it is once you start playing the game regularly. That being said, I would love to see improvements in those areas you mention, I just don’t place them at the top of my priority list. As for Player ID it’s clear from the info Konami have released that this is something newer than, say, the player cards concept, which would be a better example of putting a new name on something that was there all along (used to be called skill stars). In the past all we had was six or so different running animations, but Player ID will be taking that concept and not only expanding it massively (far, far more than player cards expanded upon the skill stars), but actually using real life player running animations for specific star players, and not only running, but dribbling style, etc, etc. It has been said that they used mo cap on messi in the past, but as far as I know, and as far as I can see in-game, they never used these specific player animations until now. And now we’re going to get it for fifty different top players (and again, not just running animations, but shooting, dribbling, etc). If you think it’s a no brainer, then that’s fair, but the fact is that it has never been done before and by the sounds of things it will really add to the game’s realism and variety. IMO some of the best ideas they can implement are no brainers, but implementing these sorts of ideas (and well) is another thing.

As for Seabass, the point is simply that in the past he didn’t take a year off, so even if they were planning way ahead to make that transition (I would assume there was some planning but even if you put all the blame on Seabass, I think it’s still fair to say that the advanced planning was not enough), either way, this time we should expect a smoother/better transition, and to me that’s good news. Also, the point few people seem to be picking up on is that we’re now finally, seriously, talking about a new engine. Yes, there is a chance they may not be able to handle the new technology, but at the same time, that fear may be well founded — don’t forget that part of why Seabass and co have struggled on this gen may simply be due to the fact that they tried to hold onto their old engine too long. Now all that is about to change with the fox engine, so give them a chance, because just based on the fact that it’s a new engine means it’s going to be a whole new ballgame, so comparing it to the transition from PS2 to PS3 (without a new engine) may not be a fair comparison at all…

PS – Remember when Fifa implemented their new engine…?

  32. Dave O says:

^I meant to say “that fear may NOT be well founded…”

  33. realist says:

have to go with Barry and Micky p here, i have played pes since the beginning and really do think 2012 is the best yet, as mickey p says it’s not perfect but for me it gives a feeling of real football, by that i mean the excitement and frustration all in one, the perfect pes is not far away, iron out a few minor flaws, we all know what they are, improve on some areas like animation, editing etc and we should see a very good game indeed.

  34. Fook pes fook konami fook seabass fook you says:

Pes 11 was better just needed some minor adjustments

    fook you Barca boys!!

  35. Seabass Out says:

How did thee hell did Zlatan score that with his studs, unrealistic that shot, more like poping ball. That colour golie should save that shot 0:30, Golie don’t look fixed 2 me, cool trailer those.

  36. Lucifer666 says:

    @ Dave O
I feel its important to respect all varied opinions and I do appreciate that not everyone is the same including yourself and me though you and others do concern me, you see I worry that those that just basically want gameplay change create a bubble for Konami to get lost in. A bubble that has the notion that huge focus on gameplay changes is all that is required to make PES great again something I completely disagree with. As far as I can see Konami will always be tweaking gameplay and so need to focus more on the other areas. Which brings me to the commentary its that repetiveness after regularly playing that should be well gone, there is many other games out there that have added in mountains of audio files such as radio stations on most sandbox games which manage to keep things fresh for a long time, they even alter depending on what you do in game. I just can’t see why Konami can’t create decent commentary that is altering and life-like?
As for Player ID…Don’t get me wrong I like the idea of the game now having more running, dribbling, etc animations than ever before but for me its not anything to warrant huge excitement Konami attach fancy names to stuff like this all the time and people unreasonably IMO literally wet themselves with trepidation.
As for Seabass and the new engine being implemented of course I welcome that happening now but its the decisions throughout the past few years under his leadership not to go to a new engine thats disturbing and now crazily its almost like they have to wait for the PS4/XBOX470 to implement this when it could have been done last year or this year even like how long does it take for the penny to drop? Surely three to four years ago they must have been thinking ‘maybe we should go with a new engine? Its hard to put faith on people who made blatantly horrible decisions in the past

  37. Dave O says:

@ Lucifer – Technically I agree, there seems to be reason to be concerned about Konami/Seabass, but some of this comes from that one decision, which in some ways I understand… After all, they had a great game, so their attempt to hold onto their engine in order not to break it is not crazy IMO. At least it’s understandable to a degree. I do, however have a lot of faith in Seabass when it comes to implementing new ideas that nobody on these boards ever thinks of. Again and again they have suprised me with their new takes on the game, especially when it comes to game modes (BAL, MLO). I’m not wetting myself over player ID btw, and if I am in favour of it, that has nothing to to with the way they chose to market it. I’m just pointing out that suggesting that it’s a new name for something old is not a fair description IMO. Nuff said.

  38. Lucifer666 says:

    @ Dave O
not even a littler bit wetting yourself? LOL

Well I think we have more or less exhausted that conversation mate without it coming to blows ;)
I don’t agree with you and I think you tend to be much more charitable and forgiving towards Konami and Seabass than I can ever be however you do make your points well and do it amicably which I like and appreciate

  39. Dave O says:

Nope, not excited at all, but I think it will certainly add something. If I was more of a fanboy of the game I might get excited, or if I was a huge fan of a specific player it might be exciting to use that particular player in-game with all their signature moves, but I’m too old for all that I’m afraid. The only thing that I get excited about is trying the game on day one, and seeing when they implement something new that really changes the whole experience for me (again, BAL and MLO achieved that for me).
Also, understand that I’m a creative person myself, and I understand how difficult it is to please everybody all the time, especially with a commercial project like this, so my faith is more universal. I think it’s easy to complain from within a bubble about what the people doing the work are not doing to please YOU, but I always tip my hat to those who are actually doing the hard work – it’s not easy – and trying their best. From the sidelines I think it’s hard to really appreciate what they do. For example, the extremists call Seabass “lazy” without really understanding what walking a mile in his shoes is like, or by looking with very narrow focus on one or two small things they DIDN’T do. It’s very rare to see a positive perspective, and appreciation is limited, but I think that is universal for this sort of thing, expecially when they set the bar so high in the past. Yes, they have struggled, but I do honestly think they have what it takes (because I’ve seen it) and I do think they have the desire to achieve it.

Aweseme document. My spouse and i accustomed to devote much our moment yachting along with being interested in games. It turned out probably the most unique period of our the child years as well as your details kind of reminded us of these amount of playing. Thanks

  41. Tom Ralph says:

PES 2012 is good. It’s not as good as PES 5 or PES 6. This is my opinion. Just to clear that up….

I recently played PES 2011, after playing PES 2012 for almost a year now and I don’t mind admitting i’m a seasoned veteran at the game now. When you revert backwards, you realise how many improvements were made in 12. Konami didn’t lie to us or fail to deliver. They failed to adapt to this generation and have been playing catch up ever since, but the progress is all there to be seen. Passing fluid, alhough i’ll admit, a little ping-pong, once you master shooting it’s really satsfying to see shots fly into the top corner, the dribbling is dynamic and takes actual skill, the defending is ten times better in this game and problem with the speed of defenders was adressed. All of this is difficult to implement in a year and Konami did it. They will probably always be second to the FIFA series, a great series but I find it a tad lifeless, generic shall we say. 2013 looks bright and I cant wait to be honest, the social network crossover is a great idea as is the player ID and dribbling, don’t get me started on the manual shooting. PES is back.

  42. NALSR02 says:

PES 2011 was great, 2012 is good / after getting used to changes it can be a very good / great game. PES 2013 is the worst deal ever, I would go even to say is worse then 2010. Where to start, graphic is awful to say at least (players look like robots), then lets move to the game play (and I am playing over a month now). The “first touch” even by star players (except Ronaldo) is disgrace, the game speed (even with option to change it) is slow, shooting and manual shooting are stupid to the point you want to smash your console all together, online play is always with bugs (PES3) slow, error in communication and so on. If you want to win take Real – Ronaldo is a God he can’t be stop and can score from the dressing rooms ( I mean I love the guy but he doesn’t run faster then a speeding car or Usian Bolt). I am playing PES from the release one in 2001, but there is a time to say goodbye to everything, and I think 2013 was end of the line for me.
