A little bit slow… but here is IGN’s hands on preview!

Yesterday evening IGN posted their hands on preview of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008. To be honest, it doesn’t really give us anything new as they seem to have been playing the same BETA everyone else in the media has been playing over the past few weeks. One thing which will be music to the ears of the 360 gamers is that it is “is a marked improvement over last year’s effort“.

Last season was a difficult one for Pro Evolution Soccer. While the mainstay of the series - the PS2 version - was as precise, tight and rewarding as ever, the fresh-faced Xbox 360 game promised much but didn’t quite deliver. It lacked the match sharpness of its last-gen predecessor and, despite its overhauled graphics engine, it was still some way off the visual spectacle PES fans were expecting.

A new season is almost upon us though and this time Konami is promising a much more rewarding next-gen experience. Indeed, from the moment the kick-off whistle blows, it’s apparent Seabass and his team have spent the last year building on the foundation that was last year’s game, familiarising themselves with the hardware to create a more rounded, realistic and - most importantly - enjoyable football game.

PES 2008 Rumours from France

Some of you may have read rumours from a guy going by the name of Jimmy5 floating around the web over the weekend. They included Chelsea and Newcastle being the 2 licensed English sides. This immediately should have set the alarm bells going in my head as I am almost 99% certain the only licensed English sides will be Tottenham and Newcastle. And regardless if they add a 3rd licensed team, they surely wouldn’t have included Tottenham in the BETA. Anywho, if you are interested you can read the rumours here, but take them with a pinch of salt.

PES 2008: Transfers will be up to date!

transferA lot of you noticed the fact that many transfers had not been included in the BETA version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008… Alan Smith still at Manchester United etc. Well today brings confirmation that the database will be up to date as of August 31st. Given that this is the day the transfer window closes it should mean the game is still pretty much fully up to date come the release date in October.

The news comes courtesy of ThomasGOAL who translated the contents of the French Official Playstation Magazine. The following facts are all regards the next-gen versions of the game:

- Database will be accurate until 31st August.
- Balls from Adidas, Puma, Nike and Reebok.
- Confirmation of facial edit using USB Webcam.
- 15 Stadiums.
- True likenesses for many players.
- Design of the pitch can be changed.

Forum Post of the Week #1

forumIn a new feature to PESGaming, every week we will take a look at some of the best forum posts of the week and give you a run down of our top 3. Check out the forum now!

This week much of the discussion has been regards the new Master League images and the lack of real currency and the top post came about that very subject. Psimonius had this to say:

I agree that currency is perhaps less of a priority but I think people just assume it would be so easy to facilitate that they want it done now. Personally, I’d be happy spending 15,000 points on Messi if it meant he played like Messi rather then him costing me £30m and he played like Steve Bould!

Meanwhile john4 has concerns about how up to date the transfers will be, especially in relation to online play. His comments followed a suggestion by another member that transfer can easily be done ourselves:

There is the online problem and the fact I pretty much only hear about the English transfers. I’ve only just learnt Forlan plays for Athletico Madrid and Toni/Klose play for Munich. I’d need to do a lot of searching around for abroad transfers and actually change them in game.

And finally desertfox4 needs your help! He is looking for an American site where he can buy PES 2008… you can help him out here.

Anyone know an American site where I could buy/pre-order PES 2008

No clear winner in console war!

ps3vsxbox360If our poll is anything to go by, then it’s going to be a damn close fight between the PES 2008 formats in regards to sales. 357 of you voted over the past few days, with 99 of you saying you’ll be playing the PS3 version of the game. This is some 33% ahead of XBox 360 gamers who made up 66 of the votes, making the PS3 the clear next-gen format of choice amongst Pro Evo gamers. There are still a lot of PS2 addicts out there though, with 96 votes cast. Meanwhile PC lurks close behind taking in 93 votes.

Handheld - 3 votes
PC - 96 votes
Playstation 2 - 93 votes
Playstation 3 - 99 votes
XBox 360 - 66 votes

You can vote on the new poll now on the right which is asking what your favourite new feature is in PES 2008.

New Column by Bolder: Interfering With Play

After starting a Column on the PESGaming.com forum, I have been invited to have it published on the main page of the website. My first column was posted on the forum and is now available here also. Feel free to drop me any feedback either on the forum, or personally to my e-mail address, danbolas@hotmail.com. I welcome both positive and negative points, future discussion topics or any questions.

———-

After posting several unstructured and random posts, as well as having a lot to get off my chest from the football world, I have decided to start writing a weekly / fortnightly column for PESGaming.com. I am not sure how well, if at all, it will be received so any feedback would be most helpful. Please note these are my views alone and I am sure I will get as many people disagreeing with them as I will people who find my views to be correct. So lets get going.

Return Of The Big One

Firstly, can I say I am delighted by the return of competitive football onto the TV screens, coupled with the start of the new Premier League season. Like most football fans, the long summer weekends of shopping and sleeping in got boring very quickly, so despite only being a week old, I’d like to give praise to some of the performances by this nations club teams. Firstly, the quality in which Reading defended at Old Trafford may have ruined the spectacle of seeing the likes of Nani and Ronaldo running wild against lower class players, but from a coaching standpoint, it proves that no player or team are perfect. Non-household names like Murty and Ingermarson far outshone world stars like Rooney and Giggs so deserve a very big pat on the back. Secondly, a lot of praise must go to the three newly promoted clubs. Birmingham took Chelsea all the way and scored twice at the Bridge, no mean feat in itself, and Sunderland and Derby both did themselves proud, registering respectable results (a win and a draw) against established Premier League sides. But the biggest shout out of all must go to the living legend that is Steven Gerrard. Liverpool, a side that have close to £100 Million worth of foreign talent at their disposal, still rely on England’s best midfielder to get them out of trouble. Ok, it wasn’t a foul for the free kick, but you still have to curl a ball into the top right hand corner of a goal 30 yards away, with a 6ft + agile bloke trying to stop you. The argument of whether Petrov’s toe touched the ball is one that should not detract away from the Scouser’s magic.

Return Of The “Other” Big One

After months of speculation, the news if now is flooding through about PES 2008. And right here sits one very excited Pro Evo fan. With no demo available and very little video footage of the game available at the time of writing this, I can only go on images and features to base my opinion, but it sounds very promising indeed. I have purchased a PS3 this year, and will be looking forward to firing up the top football game on it come the end of October. There are obviously questions that are going to occur and in turn debates that are going to rage on. Which game will be better? Will you be able to play PS3 vs. X Box 360? Why Is XXXX Not at Manchester United? And so on. I have been playing the Konami series since the PS One version, which was the first game to really give players unique personalities (Gazza’s Yellow Hair or the Tiny Mexican Keeper anyone?) and have seen a steady and gradual improvement in each game in the series. I have full faith that Konami will not “Phone it In” and spew out a yearly updated like so many sport titles seem to do, adding buzz words to make their sales increase. (that’s a rant for another article) and the next few months will be filled with much anticipation as I bleed PSP Pro Evolution5 for all its worth!

PES 2008 Release Date?

pes2008boxAs if the confusion over the licenses wasn’t enough… Konami can’t even seem to nail down an absolute date for the release of the game. Depending where you shop, you’ll be getting the game on October 19th, October 26th or even the start of November!

Generally speaking, Play.com are the most trustworthy source, and they currently carry a release date of October 26th. This is the date PESGaming expects the game to OFFICIALLY land, despite the fact mega-online retailer Amazon seems to think the game will be released October 19th. A simple press release from Konami could answer us once and for all? Surely they WANT us to know when the game is going to be available?

I do, however, expect all retailers will have the game in stock on October 19th, and the game will most probably be available to buy BEFORE the official release of October 26th. Eager high street stores will probably put the game out for sale on the Tuesday or Wednesday of the following week so it’ll be worth trying your luck at a few different shops (for those of you not ordering online). Remember, once one store makes the game available, everyone else will follow suit. It’s only the shop who releases the game first who gets into trouble!

As for the online companies, they will be shipping out 2-3 days before the release. Last year many gamers received their copies on the Wednesday or Thursday before the Friday release date.

The ‘English’ license confusion for PES 2008

newcspursJust thought I’d try to clear something up which has been confusing a lot of you over at the forum. You have probably read at various sites about the licenses for the English Premier League and who is or is not licensed in Pro Evolution Soccer 2008.

At the time of writing, the strongest evidence points towards Newcastle United definitely being licensed. This is shown in the early beta of the game (badge visible on team selection screen), in addition to the fact that Michael Owen is seen in marketing materials for the game sporting the full kit with sponsors on it. The other team licensed would appear to be Tottenham Hotspur. Some people have questioned this given that no mention of White Hart Lane has been made as being one of the stadiums in the game. The beta does show Tottenham’s official badge, however, and as far as we are concerned at PESGaming, that pretty much makes it certain they will be included. Why would Konami put the badge in if they were just going to remove it? Furthermore, they’d be breaking all sorts of rules making even the beta with them licensed if they didn’t hold the correct approval.

It gets a little more complex, however. Rumours have it that Konami could be allowed up to 3 licenses for the game, and the final game may well include a further team. Who the 3rd team would be remains unknown, and we FIRMLY believe that there will only be 2 teams regardless of what you read elsewhere.

All the PES 2008 images in one place!

We have just added a new screen shots section to the site where you can find all of the PES 2008 screen shots released so far.

New images of PES 2008 Master League

Some new images have emerged on the web today of the Master League mode in Pro Evolution Soccer 2008. The majority of them show further ‘cut scenes’ which are included such as a player signing an autograph and players celebrating after winning a tournament (they look like golfers!).

Unfortunatley it would appear the Master League continues to make use of ‘points’ as opposed to actual currency. We would have loved to have seen real money used… but maybe next year. In fact, other than a few extra SMALL additions (team popularity and ‘fans of the week?’) the Master League mode seems relatively the same as last years. I do love the new presentation, however.
