Editing mode in action - Chelsea

More screenshots have been made available by PCAction showing the editing capabilities.

Premier League stat overload

PCAction have something extra special for fans in England today… Over 74 pages of stats!

Fabregas of ‘North London’ finally has stats to represent his ability. It’s something which has bugged me for the past 2 outings.

As a Newcastle fan, I find it hard to understand how Stephan Carr can have such high stats, whereas a more consistent performer like Steven Taylor be rated so poorly. Meanwhile Obafemi Martins having LESS shot power than Alan Smith is an absolute joke.

I am sure though many of you will have complaints about your favourite team, so let’s here them!

Weekend wrap-up

editmodeWelcome to Monday mornings at PESGaming, a chance for you to catch up on all the action over the weekend in the PES scene (mainly because my schedule - a.k.a. female - doesn’t allow for time to do updates). Click the links for more information…

- IGN get’s a first look at the WII version of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008

- WENB show us more of the editing capabilities in PES 2008

- Seabass reveals radical overhaul for next years PES

- New PESRankings season kicking off October 25th

- PES 2008 Guide available to pre-order (includes DVD)

- Stats available for Ligue 1 players - Part 1 and Part 2

Clearly the big headline of the weekend was the release of WII material. For me that game could either be insanely fun, or insanely frustrating. Anyone who has played on a WII will tell you just how sensitive the control pads can be and in a high-octane game of Pro Evo I can see people finding it hard to play ‘gently’.

Something else which looks like it could turn out to be more than frustrating is the editing feature of PES 2008. Whilst the new photo import function looks truly sensational, the lack of the kit templates could be a major drawback. Earlier last week we also received word that editing of the badges will not be possible (other than on kits). This seems like an odd thing for Konami to remove. If it is a license issue, surely allowing people to import real badges onto kits has to be just as big of a problem for their lawyers.

Seabass talks PES 2009

15300 bildWith Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 still a couple of weeks away, game producer Seabass is already looking ahead to PES 2009. In a joint interview to Gamekult and Level7, Seabass has revealed his aspirations for pushing the PES franchise forward in all new ways. Thanks to the WENB boys who were sent this article from their friend Per Mangus Riesing who translated the article from the Swedish site level7.nu.

L7: How many players can play online on each format and are we going to see some downloadable updates like new line-ups?

It’s only one-on-one on all formats. The reason is that we weren’t happy with the way it was done in the previous games. We want online play to be just as good or at least similar to how it is online, so we have rebuilt most of the system. Doing so, we didn’t have time to include more than 1 vs. 1. When it comes to updates, we haven’t got any plans for now. We are weak when it comes to licenses and when we get better on that, we can also work on getting updates online.

L7: Are there any differences between the PS3- and the Xbox 360-versions?

No, none.

Gamekult: If you had had the time; what would you put into PES 2008 and what is going to be in the next game?

I cannot reveal any new game modes or details, but I have already decided on many things. One thing I can tell you about though is that we are going to change the mentality of how we are making the games. We can’t continue the way we have done before, so it’s guaranteed there will be some changes there. We are not happy within the team and we want to make you and the consumers happy.

L7: What do you mean by “the mentality”?

It’s how we make the games. We started creating PES with less than ten persons more than ten years ago. In a way, we still do. If you take a look at other next gen-games from other developers such as Assassin’s Creed or GTA4 it’s a team of over 100 persons who finish the game. But we can’t do it like that, because we still depend on the same core of six persons in the team. That is a weak point. It is also positive since it helps maintain the feeling of PES in the programming, but there’s a lot of drawbacks too. So we have to change the mentality of how we create the games.

Gamekult: In the first reviews of the game there are complaints of the game speed of the next gen-version. Why can’t you put in an option for game speed like earlier Winning Eleven versions?

It’s a question of balancing. For example on the PSOne we could increase the speed of the game by lowering to 27-28 fps and make it slower by increasing to 32-33 fps. But now we are constantly running in 60 fps and can’t do the same trick. We as developers would like to make the game in 30 fps, but that wouldn’t be smooth enough. But we learn from the criticism.

L7: Last year we got a 360-version with very few functions. This year you’re giving us an edit-function that should’ve been in PES6 and Team Vision. Do you really believe that this is enough? And can you promise us that there will be significantly more for PES 2009?

Yes, I can promise you that. Because now we finally have the basics for all the next gen-platforms. We had a lot of ideas, but couldn’t change that between different platforms so now we can concentrate on adding new functions.

Gamekult: Can we expect new functions in the Japanese Winning Eleven version which is due for release soon?

Yes, a couple of minor changes. The AI will probably be different among other things. But we can’t continue doing that because soon we will be giving you online play regardless of where in the world you are, and then we can’t have different systems.

A Konami representative has entered the room and wants us to quit. I request permission to ask one last question. If it’s short, is the answer.

L7: When you play against the computer the players in your team make more mistakes than the opposition players do. Is that just a way to raise the difficulty level or is it some sort of problem in the match engine?

What kind of mistakes?

L7: The mid-backs for example, runs more often away from their positions and lose the markings.

We don’t do that sort of things to heighten the difficulty level, what you are talking about is probably settings in your game system or your tactics.

Editing Mode: The possiblities

pool1WENB have got an exclusive look at the editing possiblities of PES 2008. Some bad news, you can’t edit the club team logo’s (the one’s you see on team select etc). Very odd decision by Konami to remove that functionality, but I am guessing it’s a licensing issue - roll on 2010!

From WENB:

From the moment a new WE/PES game hits the market and even a day or two before this community begins working hard at editing to give all the fans what they want, need and demand. What is that you ask? Perfect kits, boots, stats etc etc. The edit mode allows the community this luxury.

What we are about to show you we hope to integrate into the W.E.N.B. Option File due for release very very soon. Enjoy it WE/PES fans, it can only get better! Also special thanks to PC Action for helping us out with this one. Couldn’t have done it without them. You saw it here first but this is what we are going for and thanks to Kits By Fenners (The PES Armani!!!) its now gonna be as simple as you like with these great templates.

Pro Evo 2008 Launch Party - Sydney

Over on the forum bergkampmagic has posted his report on the Sydney launch party for Pro Evolution Soccer 2008.

Went to this last night, a tournament was held with the winner scooping a PS3, as did whoever won the lucky door prize. I was pleasantly surprised that we could all play the (apparently) FULL version of the game, I was guessing beforehand that it’d be the demos. Here are a few thoughts:

- Pro Evo 2008 was running on around 12 screens on 360s and PS3s, including one large projection screen which was apparently linked to the PC version with 360 controllers.

- Being a PS2 owner and fan of the series since the original Pro Evo (or Winning Eleven 5), adapting to the 360 controller was tricky. I’m still getting a 360 though for Live purposes. Gotta get used to the new R2!

- The console versions suffered from a LOT of lag, which was disappointing considering how these are meant to be ‘next gen’ versions. The PC version was fine though. Replays and even in-game lag was very noticeable and will hopefully be ironed out for the full release…however

- We could select from any team, which may mean that this WAS the final version. To reiterate other people’s posts on this forum before, it is a bit disappointing that the whole Bundesliga isn’t in there, but then again Bayern pretty much bought everyone and have a brilliant squad. Schweinsteiger and Ribery on the wings crossing for Klose and Toni: Class.

- Gameplay has been changed incredibly, as pointed out by all you guys who have played the demo. Some running animations also looked noticeably dodgy, and Henry doesn’t ‘run’ like he used to (like in Pro Evo 5 in particular where I felt he was so so close to the real thing). Wright-Phillips’ running motion was also weird.

- The Aussie version has Lucas Neill instead of Michael Owen next to Cristiano Ronaldo on the cover (as revealed on the posters handed out), no surprise there though as its been said before. I can confirm it now however.

- The crowd and atmosphere are lacking, with the latter being more animated than in previous versions but still noticeably pixellated and flat-looking. In all honesty if the version I played is the final thing then it’s not that much of a step-up, considering the power of these systems. I will still get it as it’s better than FIFA anyday.

- Nerds FC were there, although this won’t make any sense at all to non-Aussies.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 will be released in Australia on November 8th, 2 weeks after the European release.
