PES 2009 Version 1.20 Update

Probably the most anticpated patch or update in the history of Pro Evolution Soccer is actually here with us. Upon starting up the game, you will be asked to install version 1.20 of the game. Many of you probably won’t care where 1.10 is, but obviously this is the second attempt to update the game. The 41MB file won;t take too long to download, then the game will start up as normal, with nothing changed!

Do not panic though, the update is actually here with us. Simply go onto system settings, and right at the bottom, you will see an option titled download. Upon clicking that, it will inform you that a new update is ready for your downloading pleasure, and you will be asked to confirm you want it. You will receive a list of all the things the update will actually … update, which is a fair few things. The key points are:-

  • The aforementioned new spanish teams are licensed and nicely updated.
  • Champions league sides have been updated.
  • New players have been created and added.
  • Transfers are UP TO DATE for the 31/8/08, so some loans may need doing.
  • Any kit data that has been added to a side that is being changed will be lost.
  • All saved games and competitions remain saved.

A full, more in depth list is available on the game itself, so i will not waste my time repeating something you have already read. You will then be asked to chose HTTP or P2p (peer 2 peer) downloading, followed by a lengthy donwload process. Once its done, its time to start editing the rest of the game!

Hope that clears everyone up, and just so everyone is clear, this is for the PS3 version, but i am 95% 360 is the same!

PES Off!! 6th November 2008

I would like to give a massive shout out to everyone who left comments after my post last week.  I would have liked to have listed everyone, but that would have been quite an exhaustive process, since there were so many comments made.

I like to make one special mention – to Simon McDermott – to keep commenting to his heart’s content!  Simon – I was where you are now, with detractors at comments – please don’t let them put you off mate.

For those not so much in the know, Simon wrote a lengthy comment, which some people ridiculed on that basis.  Everyone is entitled to write as much or as little as they like – if you don’t like it, don’t read it!

Fact: We all have different opinions.  Some opinions we agree with, others we disagree with.  Would you want to be slated for saying things that others disagree with??

This is a specialist PES site, we’re aiming to foster a fun environment for all to experience.

If you really don’t agree with what someone’s written, then please keep it to yourself.

Updated thanks to valid point from mn9ajas:  Please keep comments polite – there’s no need for any unnecessary abuse!

Anyway, this week’s article is being cut short because I am collating all the suggestions because I have a meeting tomorrow afternoon with a Konami PES representative!  I’ve already booked the afternoon off work to go to their offices, and can’t wait to go!  I feel like a 12 year old going on a school trip.

Except I’m all grown up, and will be driving to their office….

I will try to sum up the ideas we have come up with, and I will also leave him a copy of all the suggestions that have been made for them to look over.

Obviously I go with high hopes both personally, and also on behalf of our readership,

And we shall see how successful we are in giving it to Konami as we see it!

Thanks for reading!

Interfering With Play – Tuesday 4th November 2008

IWP League Champion 2008: Martin Ginnelly (River Plate)

Welcome to this week’s Interfering With Play. This column may appear a tad shorter than the usual 2,000 + words I tend to write, but this is down to the fact I am having to allocate more time towards writing the reviews and comparison article for PES 2009 and FIFA 2009. I have decided to review the game in an ‘out the box’ format, meaning things such as paid updates (Adidas Live Season) will not be reviewed. Any free updates, such as patches or squad updates will be taken into account when producing the reviews, but bear in mind features like these are always subject to change. Just to give you some idea of the lengths I have gone to for these reviews, I have been playing old copies of FIFA 1998, ISS2000 and ISS Pro Evolution Soccer 2 as well as playing last years games, to ensure my reviews are as factually sound and fair as possible. I genuinely hope this will show through in the end products.

“Wishing My Life Away”

I start this week’s column with a brief look back on double D’s PES Off column from last week. I have been aware for a while now that Dougie had been planning to meet with someone from Konami regarding the state of PES 2010, and I would like to start off by wishing him all the best with that meeting. From personal experience, I know they are not the best when it comes to listening to fan sites etc. and I hope an actual face-to-face meeting with one of the PESGaming.com elite will act as a barrier breaker between the higher powers and the fans. My topic is based on two folds, both of which, as I said relate to Dougie’s topic.

The first is the sheer variety of replies he has received regarding the issue. The numbers itself are fantastic, anything that makes PESGaming.com more popular is good in my eyes but reading through them, you end up realising the reason so many people are “disappointed” each year! Whilst Dougie as an individual is perfectly entitled to his own opinion, and all the replies are perfectly valid, so many of them contradict themselves, it will be impossible to please everybody. Some want the game sped up, others slowed down. Some want a more realistic refereeing experience; others want the game to flow more freely. Some ask for more cut scenes, others want the game to just get on with it. I could go on with these clashing points, but the bottom line is the same, whilst half will be pleased, others will be upset their views haven’t been appreciated or looked at. There are fundamental issues that Dougie no doubt will address, such as the online situation and the issues regarding licenses, but, and this is speaking from experience, its very difficult to get everybody’s views on board, especially if they are all so different.

The second topic raised is one that I know some people will support me on. I fully appreciate why double D needs to get these points across so early, as the meeting is arranged for November/December time. With this said, I am both surprised and worried that so many people have so many complaints about a game that has been out for a little over 2 weeks. Personally, I am really enjoying PES2009, and although I am trying to limit my time playing to keep the review with FIFA as fair as possible, I have had a number of excellent, exciting and realistic games both against the AI and with mates. I know that for a lot of PES fans out there, actually playing the game is the best part of the whole PES community experience, and whilst I personally spend a great deal of time involved with this fine website, that time will be ten fold spent actually playing the game. If you don’t like PES 2009, and prefer Pro Evolution Soccer 6, the simple solution is to play Pro Evolution Soccer 6. That game was released two years ago, and if you personally feel it is better, feel free to carry on using it. No one is going to stop you, and if you won it already, it won’t cost you anything. Yes, new releases are important, but I personally know many people who prefer older games to their newer counterparts, and there is no stopping you using them if you believe they are better. One issue I have always had with PES is that once you move on, going back always makes you appreciate the newer title more, and I ask those gamers who think PES have take huge step backwards to return to the PES3 or PES4, and have a few games on them. If you prefer it, stick with it, but for me, PES 2009 is a top game! I don’t think I am on my own about that; if you’re with me; feel free to drop a comment. We hear enough from the negative people, with their pages on why PES is rubbish, but simply if you like the new PES, simply put in your comment, ‘I like The New PES’. Give us a good example on how many of you are out there!

“It’s Tricky”

One thing, a point raised by Francis in previous weeks, was the difficulty level of the new game, and what exactly is responsible for this change. By my own admittance, I was regularly scoring 4 or 5 goals against sides on PES2008, and always felt like I had a goal or two in my game I could pull out if the result was a losing one. This time around, it’s a whole different kettle of fish. Shooting is more difficult, but like any kind of new physics system, this is something that is hard to master and will ultimately take time. The passing system, personally, suits me down to the ground, but that is also because the AI passes the ball well too, varying power, accuracy and height to really keep you on your toes. Without this turning into an actual review, I have only played one game on Top Player, which ended 0-0 following an assured defensive performance by my Pompey side. Whether the AI on PES2008 wasn’t good enough, or Team Vision actually is starting to work, or maybe the game is just actually harder, it is something Konami should and must take credit for.

“Send In The Clowns”

I have been doing this column for a fair time now, and my next point is a constant issue around this time of year. As a columnist, I always take the time to read the comments made to my piece of writing, taking on board what is written with a view to including it in next weeks IWP. There are some people who find it hilarious to be abusive and foul to other, long serving community members by showing disrespect and hate in a variety of forms. We have spent a great deal of time talking about racism on this site, but this can be furthered by swearing and general abusive behaviour. My ego is not such that I require a huge number of comments on my article, if only 2 of them equate to discussing relevant topics, in other words if your not talking about something related to IWP or PES, don’t bother posting. I personally do my level best to delete any comments made by these individuals, and as of this week, will be blocked persistent offenders IP addresses. As a blogger, I can see every IP address from every post, so I know who is genuine and who is ‘using someone else’s screen name’. If you’re a regular poster, you need to worry, as I will ensure any comments made from you non-regular IP address will be deleted, to stop plagiarism. I take a certain level of pride in IWP and in PESGaming.com, and don’t wish to be associated with certain people with little better to do. I know this will receive backing from the majority, and the minority, I don’t want you hear anyway!

“Time To Play The Game”

Whilst I am fully aware this is a predominantly football gaming website, I would like to take a few lines to hype up a few other games that are making it onto our shelves, and no doubt into our machines this festive season. I know the more mature or wealthy among you may have no problem ordering 5 or 6 titles to keep you warm on the cold nights, but with so many top games coming out, I would be more than willing to support any reviews or recommendations of huge titles set for this winter. The format is simple, if you want to make a game recommendation, simply e-mail me with the title of the game, and each week, I will post a couple of names with what you are looking forward to / playing. It could be a way of meeting up players online for multiplayer games, or simply ask someone’s opinion before spending your hard earned cash. My personal recommendations for the next couple of weeks are Smackdown Vs Raw 2009, Football Manager 2009 (demo available now) and of course, Playstation 3’s Little Big Planet. The e-mail address is featured below; simply include the subject heading ‘GR’ followed by your recommended game, console and screen name.

“One More Time With Feeling”

Last little pointer, and something that seems to be getting on a few peoples goat on the forums as well as via e-mail. Prior to the release of PES 2009, I spoke to an individual at Konami regarding a promotional copy of the game for PESGaming.com. The idea being we could provide either screenshots or an early review for the community, in order to help build hype up about the game in the week or so leading up to its release. We know that Konami do this kind of thing, as other PES sites received complimentary copies. But as the biggest PES site, (check out Google) it was odd we didn’t receive anything. In all honesty, the individual from Konami was quite helpful, and referred me to Konami’s UK based PR company, stating it was responsible for promotion of the title. It took three e-mails to the aforementioned PR company to even gain a response, which informed me they would be in touch over the next few days, and after 3 more chasing up e-mails on my part, I simply gave up. Konami make a conscious decision to employ a separate PR company for their games, and therefore when that company fails to provide even such much as a couple of dignified responses to e-mails, it reflects badly back onto them. As anyone who has been reading my column for a while can tell, I am not an aggressive person, nor was my tone in any of these e-mails, yet the poor results speak huge volumes for the company Konami employ, and in turn, Konami.

That’s your lot for this week. Feel free to get in touch with sensible and mature comments! interferingwithplay@hotmail.co.uk is the place to send your e-mails. Hopefully news on the patch will be out in the next day or two, although a 5th November date seems pencilled in. Feel free to add your own personal recommendations for winter gaming, and thanks once again go out to Dave O for his logo!

Thanks for Reading.

Updates

With Konami’s release of an update around this time last year for Pes ’08 (which did virtually nothing,) for those of you who don’t read the forums, here’s a brief cut and paste of what this update ‘released on the 5th November’ will contain;

“This will update four Spanish sides – Athletico Madrid, Sevilla, Racing Santander and Valladolid, – all of whom will be officially licensed. Furthermore, it will also update the kits and team rosters of many teams within the game. The UEFA Champions League mode will also benefit from the new update, with twelve more teams added to the club list, with proper UEFA Champions League kits and kit markings added. Amongst the teams fully updated within this mode now will be Marseille, Juventus and Basel.”

With 95% of people seemingly finding the online mode terribly laggy and hard to navigate, I’m just hoping that this update will attempt to make online play smoother – although I’m not holding my breath after last years attempt to fix the online play.

I don’t know what will happen to user-edited kits and transfers which a lot of you will already have done, so I hope you took Dan’s advice and are waiting until the update to edit players and kits.

Brighten Up My Day

Last night I was playing in the League Cup, and I noticed that half of the pitch was in the shade, and the other half was in the sun, a nice touch I thought. As it was a very eventful match I didn’t notice whether the sun/shadow moved after a while, so I’ll play a bit more whilst observing the weather, and note in the next column what it was like!

Some Things I’ve Noticed

I’ve decided I shan’t be doing a comprehensive write up of Pes ’09, as Dan’s will be far better and fuller, and I’ll feel silly. However in two weeks time I’ll do a list of the points which I like and don’t like about the new edition of Pro Evolution Soccer ’09! I shan’t be able to blog for next Saturday as my band is going on tour around the UK, but on the 15th I’ll post my + and – list of Pes 2009.

The Big Question

Simple one this week – What I’ve noticed is that quite a few people use the D-pad and not the analogue stick; As I use the analogue stick, I guess I incorrectly assumed that the majority of people also use it, where I think the opposite might be true! So;

Analogue stick, or D-pad?

See you in two weeks. As always you can email me at francis_newall@hotmail.co.uk and comments on your preferences to what I talk about, whether you liked it, or just general comments on the article, are all very welcome.

Thanks,

-Francis
