Welcome to this week’s Interfering With Play. It is definitely a case of after the lord mayor’s show regarding PESGaming.com at the moment. After all the discussions, reviews and debates in the months leading up to the game, the lack of posts and contributions speaks for itself. People are now playing the game, and as I have said, are more than entitled to make up their own opinions. This week’s Interfering With Play will be briefer than usual, we a few things that I am researching before penning over the new couple of articles. I would like to open by saying that I am currently working on a form for IWP League 2010 applications, and have experienced a couple of bugs. Hopefully these will be ironed out and the form given its own post within the next few days. In my opinion, this year’s competition promises to be the best and most challenging ever, with lag being less of an issue than previous instalments. With more of that to come in the following weeks, let’s crack on with this week’s Interfering With Play.
“I Just Don’t Get It!”
My first point this week is arguably the biggest gripe with PES 2010, and that is regarding the goalkeepers. I know some of the most critical persons on this site highlight the goalkeeping issue as one of the problems with Pro Evolution Soccer 2010, but in the 50 plus games I have played so far, including a couple of tournaments and a handful of online games, there may be two goals that, at a push, I would blame the goalkeeper for, and this is both for and against me. The epitome of this was in my recent quest for the Asia Cup, when I took Australia to the final against South Korea. About 10 minutes in, the Korean Gk tipped two shots on to the post in the space of 20 seconds, followed by a fantastic point blank stop to deny Harry Kewell. I ended up winning the game 1-0, but my tally of 11 shots, 7 on target told its own story.
I understand that I may be in the minority here, but I don’t really get what all the fuss is about. This is not me sticking up for Konami, because anyone who knows me and knows my writing would realise I would never do that, but I genuinely find the goalkeepers as a whole to be more than competent. Watching this week’s Match Of The Day, I saw a huge number of parried shots and saves that fell straight back into the 6 yard box, and even saw Jensen, the Burnley goalkeeper tip Geovanni’s free kick into the net, a la PES 3. Whilst I know many people complained about not being able to control the goalkeeper (something which is now an option in PES 2010) or moaned that they simply aren’t good enough, I find the keepers on a whole to be a realistic interpretation of their real life counterparts.
Maybe it’s just me, and I don’t have too many shots for or against in matches, or perhaps the teams I play with have better goalkeepers than Victor Valdes, (because based on online, Barcelona and Real Madrid are the only teams on the game!) But I really don’t get it. So here is my open challenge, my request to all the people who blame the keepers. Take your mobile phone, or if you’re fancy, your video capture card and send me your videos. You can upload them to you tube or just mail them to me direct and I will approach the situation with a completely open mind. The quality doesn’t have to be perfect, it is just so I get an idea of the problems you guys have on a regular basis. If these problems are so frequent, and in some people’s eyes, game ruining, it shouldn’t be hard to have two or three pop up in a number of matches. I will analyse any footage I receive and provide an honest assessment in due course. In turn, I will also provide some moments of goalkeeping magic filmed on my iPhone, to balance things out. Mails can be sent, as always, to the usual address.
“I’m Keeping You”
So, quite a few people are keeping Pro Evolution Soccer 2010, with only a handful admitting to returning the game. What I find very interesting to read though, is how people’s opinions of the game is changing the longer they play, and not always in a good way. I must admit, as soon as I picked up and played PES 2010, I was a little sceptical about how far the game had moved on. The demo felt and played much different to the end product, so I was just a little taken back by the whole experience, and genuinely not sure what to make of it. This is why I waited a few days before reviewing the game, by which time I was firmly hooked. Yes, it still lacks the kits and the transfer updates, but on the pitch it’s exceptionally enjoyable to play. I am now really enjoying finding out the new tricks, including my beloved L Turn, and quite honestly have never looked back.
But I find it interesting that people who enjoyed the game have started to get frustrated with it. This has never happened to me on any video car, bar Mirror’s Edge, as I play games for fun, and wouldn’t spend my time being frustrated. Of course, I get annoyed when I concede a goal or miss a chance, but those frustrations are very much football relevant, and therefore only add to the experience. If you are one of those people who first loved PES 2010 and have since gone off it, I would love to know why this is the case, either via e-mail or in comment format below. Also, if you have just got round to picking up the game, either due to your location or financial options, please let the community know whether you are keeping it or taking it back.
“Chart Breaker”
Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 finds itself at the top of the charts. It’s a statement that has been spoken about on pretty much every forum and community board across the web over the past 7 days. Granted, when the ISS Pro 1998 was out, most people would have been playing the game on chipped a Playstation with a copied disk, and charts didn’t really count for much, but I am sure Konami will be delighted now that their game has once again found its way on to number one in the sales rankings.
Personally, I genuinely couldn’t care less about where the game ranks or rates. Obviously, the people that work for the game and create the game need to see good sales figures, but if it was only selling averagely, and still played the way it does, I would be just as happy. At the end of the day, sales prove popularity to an extent, but community sites and option file editors prove that Konami is still very much a game for the people, and in many cases edited by the people. However, when all is said and done, any ratings, sales charts and rankings are all set to be blown away in two weeks time when Modern Warfare 2 launches, a game that has topped the pre-order charts since late January! If any game outsells that this year, it’s truly worthy of any praise it receives, including any EA Sports franchise.
That’s your lot this week. I still have a fair few things to say, but as mentioned at the start, I am going to hold on until I have researched the topics a little further. Hopefully we will be receiving an official Konami update in the next couple of week’s, news on of that when it happens, along with instructions on how to install it. interferingwithplay@hotmail.co.uk is the place for all your e-mails, and remember to get your videos of your goalkeeper nightmares; I want to see what all the fuss is about. Expect news of the IWP 2010 League applications a little after Thursday, all being well.
