Interfering With Play 23/10/07

Welcome to this weeks Interfering With Play. With so much news coming regarding PES2008, alongside its imminent release, this weeks article will be much smaller and to the point than usual. This is coupled with the fact I am on my mate’s iMac due to PC problems, and have a limited amount of time. So lets press on.

Player Of The Year Award

The support for the first ‘Interfering With Play’ Player Of The Year Award for PES6 has been truly amazing. I would like personally thank the 200+ people who either commented, e-mailed or expressed their opinions via MSN. Computer games are ever changing, and it’s important to remember the games that came before in order to truly appreciate the games we play today. People who call PES6 rubbish after it being their bible for the past 12 months come across as pretty short sighted in my opinion.

As said, the results are in, with fans of PES6 picking their 3 favourite players from last year’s game. As expected, there were some of the more familiar names popping up, but it was also great to see so many unfamiliar names cropping up. But of course, it is some familiar names that make up the top three players.

3rd Place David Villa -10 Votes

2nd Place Wayne Rooney -15 Votes

1st Place Cristiano Ronaldo – 30 Votes

So, and maybe no real surprise, that the poster boy for PES2008 is the star man for PES6. From a personal point of view, I cannot argue with the choice, as he was a star in my master league, and overall is a top player. Again, thank you for your support on this feature, and hopefully the same event will occur in 12 months time, even if it does end with the same winner!

Are They Taking The Wii?

I was quite surprised to hear the news that PES would be making its debut on the Nintendo Wii, and was even ore surprised when the actual screenshots came through. Whilst I am personally undecided about the Wii as a gaming system, I can see why it sells so well, and why developers are making so many unique games for it. My point this week, is if you are a Wii gamer, or even if your not, could you see yourself playing through an individual master league using the Wii control system? For a system that is questionably ‘next gen’ is PES 2008 an acceptable title, both graphically and to play? I am leaving the floor open on this one, and am looking forward to hearing your opinions.

Don’t Panic

The news from PESgaming.com and Play.com is that PES2008 is already in the most, with many gamers hoping to receive the game as early as Wednesday. Me and my mates go through the same routine each year of going into games shops and asking sales staff to release a copy of the game a day or two early, with the hope that eventually one of them will sell the game. This is normally a very successful procedure, and since Pro Evolution Soccer 2, I have always had the game a number of days before the official release date. If you have Pre-Ordered the game online, as a few of my mates have, I am pretty sure it will arrive in the next 24 to 48 hours on your doorstep, but if you haven’t, I personally recommend to buy from a 24 hour supermarket, such as an Asda or Tesco. This is because these stores do not have dedicated gaming staff, and are more likely to release a game upon request as opposed to someone who knows the implications of an early release. I will personally be trying my local Asda tomorrow evening; with the hop a flood of Internet releases will have made the game available. I would like to use this section as a general announcement area, and for people to name and praise shops that do release the game early. At the end of the day, we are all PES fans, and whether it’s via Play.com, your local Game store or from a supermarket, we all want to be playing the game as soon as possible.

You Only Get One Chance

This week will see many rash judgements about PES2008 be made, some positive and some negative. Of course, there will be stories of people saying it is the worse Pro Evo ever; those stories have been going on since the series began, but I am looking forward to trying out all the features and modes. Despite playing several leagues on PS2 PES6, I played Master League on my PSP. The option of being able to use my breaks at work to build upon my team was an appealing one, and as a result, I experienced a very watered down version of the PES6 Master League. With that said, many of the features from PES2008 Master League will be very new to me, and this is an something I am defiantly going to enjoy. The whole point of previous Pro Evolution Soccer games is that they grow on with time, and the more effort and hours you put into them, the more rewarding they become. This is one of the greatest beauties of the Konami series, as with many RPG and Action games, once you have completed the story mode, or defeated the bosses, you are fundamentally at a peak, whereby the game has tested you as far as it can. But with PES, you can be the most experienced player in the world, and still have a bad day at the office, and no matter how good you are, there will always be someone out there who fancies their chances against you. As with many people who played the Fifa 2008 Demo and deleted it after one game, PES2008 will suffer from many snap judgements and negative feedback. Before you all start giving your opinions on the new Pro Evo, wait until one week of playing the game, and see how your views are then. I will be giving my personal views of PES2008 in next week’s column.

As I said, a shorter version of this weeks article, due to the reasons stated above. With the games ‘official release’ on Friday, many of you will be proud owners of PES2008 the next time Interfering With Play comes round, so enjoy you gaming experience. The e-mail address is danbolas@hotmail.com if you want to get in touch, or simply add me to your PS3, thebolder if you’re a PS3 gamer.

i downloaded the demo on 360 last week and have been playing it nonstop! if that’s the demo then i can’t wait for the finished product! i’m already in love! all the gameplay aspects i hoped they would improve on from pes6 have so far impressed me. headers and free kicks for example. i hope you’re right about the early arrival. my amazon account says to expect it on thursday but here’s hoping when i arrive home from work tomorrow it will be nestled on my hall carpet! happy gaming guys!

  5. PESFREAK Says:

Help….Every day is getting closer but i just cant wait till friday. Every shop in Cardiff are telling me Friday but i NEED it early….any ideas?

  7. mn9ajas Says:

I am a Wii owner as well as PS3 and having seen the video for Pro Evo on Wii I would definitely like the chance of playing the master league on this system. From what was shown it almost looked more like a command and conquer style game with you moving players around on the screen with a cursor. It’ll be interesting to see how the final game will actually play, especially in two player mode, and whether or not it’ll all be too confusing!

I’ve personally been wanting Konami to produce another pro evo for a Nintendo system since the winning elevn version of Pro evo 2 on the cube and before people start slagging the system off lets not forget where the series actually came from in the first place!!

Lastly, graphics wise, ok they won’t be the best but then thats what I have a PS3 for!!

  8. mn9ajas Says:

Anyone that has the PS3 version - have you been able to use your PS2 option file with it?

Also what would you say the best and worse bits are about the game so far?

  9. Tom Wilde Says:

I have my copy of Pes 2008 on the ps3. It is a review copy and came with no manual i paid a 15 pound premium for it.
Thought i’d share a few thoughts:
Gameplay: truly exceptional, players have weight, shooting and heading far more precise, player movement off the ball exacellent tackling rewards patience punishes you for sprinting in, even with X.
Graphics: close up superb, good cloth animations, facial likeness and licenseced kit look ace. At distance considerable degradation in quality, even on license kits sponsors and emblems blur/ down grade in texture quality when camera is only a fe feet away from players.

Technical: Oh dear God, The slow down is a major issue do not let anyone tell you otherwise.Infinitely wosre than anything see4m on Pes4/Pes5 The game can not be played on the wide camera, with out it becoming a choppy mess.I mean can notbe played. This is not so bad as the next most distant camera is wider than in previous pes and slow down is considerable reduced.
Replays: Look magnificant but again frame rate is disgraceful until you have control!

I can’t see how the game will even begin to function online the frame rate is just so inconsistent. My hope is that Konami release an update to address technical problems.
I’m devasted and estatic in equal measure. The best Pes yet when it runs smoothly, however this is far from often.

I realise i’m a nobody in the gaming community but i’ve been a iss fan since the Snes versions.

  12. timmy k Says:

Thursday it is then, if anyone hears about ANY wednesday releases please let us know. Iv got Friday booked off and am ready for some serious gaming!

  13. Anonymous Says:

got friday off too, but bit concerned about these slow downs what are they? cant think what angle i play it wide or not.

  14. Tom Wilde Says:

Slow down- is when the frame rate of the game drops resulting in the game slowing down considerably. Basically the flow of the game is disrupted. When only a few players are on screen it runs smoothly then when you get to a congested area it slows right down. The result is that it is very choppy meaning timing is more difficult etc and its looks awful.
Its a bit like the difference between a good driver changing gear(smooth) and a crap one (car jolts all over the place. Pretty poor shouldn’t happen on the next gen. Does that help understanding ?

  15. Anonymous Says:

spot on mate cheers for that much appreciated happy playing

  16. rossboss Says:

  17. steeeeee Says:

what about the 360 version duz that have framerate problems

  19. chris Says:

  21. gary Says:

does anyone know where i could buy pro evo early in leicester

  22. Frank Says:

    @steeeee

Incorrect. Read the IGN reviews of the PS3 and 360 versions. They confirmed a lot of slowdown in the PS3 version and NONE in the 360 version.

  23. Dell Says:

I got my pro today ps3 version there selling it in wood green shoping city
a shop called Awesome games probably closed now though. yeah the frame rate slows down big time. can’t believe they released the game with out fixing this problem so annyoing. but the game play is good though still worth getting

  41. Jubba Says:

Well I read all this bollocks from people about GAME, HMV, Blockbuster etc and thought well there licensing agreements wouldnt allow them to sell it. So I rang round the local independant stores, and found one that had stock in this morning. So I sent my girlfriend down to pick one up for me. He asked her not to tell anyone as it’d be a £7k fine if he got found out, but fuck it, that aint mine problem its his, So if your in the Essex region and can get to Colchester, head down to Interactive Console on Red Lion Walk.
