Interfering With Play 18/12/07
Posted by Dan Bolas in Interfering With Play on Wed 19 Dec
Welcome to the final Interfering With Play of 2007. The last few months have been truly groundbreaking for both me as a writer and for the PESGaming.com community, with so much discussion about PES2008 and general for support for the best Pro Evolution Soccer site on the web, in my opinion. Seeing as it is the final one of the year, I would like to crack on and get moving with the topics straight away.
So Sick Of Being Tired
My first point tonight relates to one of the criticisms raised by many PES gamers, and something that until my recent journey into a league season as Blackburn Rovers, I had not experienced first hand. The levels in which player fatigue levels grow is highly unrealistic, and one, which means the only possible solution, is top play with accumulated fatigue switched off. I personally like to make PES as challenging as possible for myself, and will play on top levels using anyone but the top four when playing an ‘English League’ season. Up until PES2008, accumulated fatigue would mean you would have to rest a player every 3-5 games in order to avoid running the risk of injury. This was coupled by having the conditioning arrows set to green or above, meaning that you could budget for the loss of your strike partnership, knowing the two players waiting in the wings would do a decent job. PES2008 sees not only the need to rest players after 1-2 games, but also a large amount of blue or even white/grey arrows, meaning the replacement ‘squad’ players will not come in and do a half decent job. For those unaware, the arrows either increase or decrease certain physical attributes, for example a red arrow will make your player run above their normal speed, or a blue will make their touch slightly less deadly, meaning players who are below a green (average) arrow are best left on the subs bench. It is no secret that more than ever, football is a squad-based game, and the Liverpool players can appreciate that more than most! However, most sides try wherever possible to field an unchanged side, especially if results are going their way, and it is highly unbelievable to be resting someone like Lampard or Ronaldo after just two games, especially when there are no Champions League or International fixtures to add into the equation. I am sure these opinions will not have fallen upon deaf ears, and your views on player fatigue, especially in the Master League would be most appreciated.
Club Vs. Country
I have spoken to Peter about this week’s current poll, and it gives you, the PESGaming.com fans, the option to solve the argument plaguing many a overpaid mind. What is more important for you, success for your club domestically, on the continent, or to see your nation win the top prize in world football? As always, get your views in, the previous poll saw over 300 votes cast, which is pretty immense for a 10 day poll. Please keep up the good work.
Letter Of The Law
The topics for the Seabass letter are flying in from all sources and some of the ideas are brilliant, whilst others are a little questionable. The bottom line is, we are going to be sending the most popular ideas in a letter to Seabass in late February, and are still looking for the PESGaming.com fan’s input. There are some fundamental errors in both the programming and features of the latest PES offering, especially on the next generation consoles, and whilst we will try to cover every base in our letter, there are bound to be things that will get overlooked. Please get your views in over the next few weeks, as we will be beginning the letter writing process in the New Year. The basic format will be each week, Interfering With Play will feature one area, which will be concentrated on, for example Online Mode, or Presentation, and then the next seven days will be your opportunity to support, add to or disagree with the comments made. The poll will also be related to the letter, and your votes will play a massive part in determining the final content. Following this, a draft copy of the letter will be made available on the home page and in the forums of PESGaming.com, as well as be e-mailed to all those who have e-mailed with ideas during the writing process. This will be available for proof reading, before the letter will finally be sent via e-mail and hopefully post, to Seabass, and Konami. As I said from the start, this letter is getting your views across, whilst being supported by a massive website and online PES community. We have a credible reputation, and as a result, any opinions attached to that will have a greater chance of being taken on board than standalone e-mails and letters.
Your So Last Generation
One more point to get your teeth into over the Christmas period is regarding the potential to scrap PES for PS2 and other ‘last generation’ consoles. Many gamers turned ‘next gen’ in order to play PES2008, and those that didn’t were overall disappointed with the lack of improvements and overall result of the product. Seabass himself complained that making so many different versions of the game had become too difficult for his small team, and as a result it was the product that was suffering. My question now is should Seabass and Konami forget about making versions of the game for PS2, PSP, Wii, DS and even PC in order to make a top football game for the two next generation big hitters? Obviously those who own a 360 or PS3 will think so, but what about those still waiting to make the step up, would have a top version of PES be enough to tilt you splash the cash. As always, all views and opinions are welcome.
That’s your lot for this week’s Interfering With Play, and indeed, this years Interfering With Play. The article has been running for four months now, and I would like the thank everyone for your continued support, feedback and generally getting involved. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading your responses and writing for your enjoyment over the past few months, and hope to do so long into 2008!! We are taking a two-week break now, as the following two Tuesdays are Christmas Day and New Years Eve respectively, meaning the chances of me being found at a PC are slim! The article will be returning in the New Year on the 7th January 2008, and will be freshly released every Tuesday after that. Bookmark us or add us to your favourites if you haven’t already done so! Please take the time to answer the poll questions, and if you have any ideas, no matter how big or small, be they regarding game play or features, please e-mail to me at danbolas@hotmail.com or leave them as a comment at the end of the article. I will be online gaming during the Christmas period, my current poison being Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Add my gamer tag TheBolder to your PS3 friends network if you get one over Christmas, and will be up for a game on there.
Other than that, I wish you all a very safe and happy Christmas, and hope to see you back here on Tuesday 7th January 2008!
Thanks for Reading

Hi Dan,
Very good article again. I am playing PES2008 on the PS2 and I agree that it’s probably best to stop to support this “last generation console” for the next release of PES, if that means that PES2009 will be a vast improvement over this one.
I do hope that they will continue to support the PSP though, as it would be great to still have a hand held version around of PES.
Yeah I agree, the psp versions are a god send when I work away!!
With regards to players fatigue in PES 2008 I find that by using the ‘regulate players’ option many of them improve at least their condition arrows. It gives you the option to select players you want to regulate too so you don’t have to train people that are fit or already on orange or red arrows. I don’t seem to have major rotation issues that others are reporting as a result.
Maybe in the next IWF you could give us a laugh by telling us some of the questionable ideas people are coming up with!
Have a good Christmas!
forget about making a version for the pc?!
are you crazy. it still has und will have the best editing options.
i would rather say. forget about PS3 and Xbox360!
what? only make it for the big hitters 360 and ps3 and not wii and pc! sorry but the wii is absolutely killing the ps3 and 360.
wake the **** up you frowzy kunt!!
In PES2009 I’d like to see the option (similar to Madden) where you can pick different ‘plays’ or running angles for your players in the box for corners and freekicks. I’m fed up of having to wait for the players to run out the box just to run back it. I mean, what’s that all about!?!
the Wii is crap. All it can do is motion sense. So can the ps3 whoopdy doo. Its selling more cus its aimed at little kids and its christmas. Parents are being swayed by the stories it keeps your kids active. My arse….U dance around liek a twat until u realise u can do it sitting down with a flick of the wrist. complete bollocks unless your 5 or your mate has one and you want to have a go for an hour or so. Its merely a party console. It isnt fit to lick the boots of Sony or Microsoft’s next gen machines
yeh i personally dont like the wii that much, my girlfriend got one the other week and it is repetitive and a bit boring after a while, i much prefer my 360.
player fatigue on ML is awful, especially with the original players (iouga, huylens etc.) i had to change almost my whole starting 11 every 1-2 games, even when i have built a squad its still poor.
Even some players suffer fatigue in individual matches and their bar runs out in a game.
I turn it off when i play leagues and cups as it isnt very realistic.
merry xmas
First of all, I have to disagree with the fatigue problem. I still have the ps2 version and please note that what i say here is a result of my experience with the ps2 version. The fact that ronaldo for example is tired after 2-3 games is true. He is tired or at least his stamina bar is not 100% full. If you watch football every week I think you will notice that ronaldo does play a lot of games and sometimes plays 15-20 games straight within the time-span of 15 weeks. But that does not mean that he is not tired. I have seen some games where I asking myself is he even in the game. Fact of the matter is u are not forced to not play him! I think that the meaning of the arrows is to reached a certain effect. A player just can not play a perfect game EVERY game! But the arrows alone don’t do the job and it has to be a combination of both the arrows AND the stamina bar!
What I also like to say is a real life example of overplaying a player is Ronaldinho at the moment. The last 2-3 years has played soo many games that he is just tired!!! Everybody thinks that he is getting a belly and that’s why is is not playing good at all, but at the level of ronaldinho preforming the way he did the last 3 years is for I think all of the members unimaginably tiring!!!!!
In conclusion about the fatigue-problem I think a possible solution should be a different type of meaning for both the arrows and the stamina bar! I always had an idea of having two stamina bars. One should be a green one showing the staminabar for the next game & the other one should show the stamina in longer terms! I think that will solve a lot of confusion in pesplayers thinking that when a player’s staminabar is not full he is tired! That is absolutely not true, cause even If u have a player that has a have full staminabar when he start’s a game he is not tired at all. He doe however get tired very fast!! This meaning that the player is just tired from not just the last game but the last 15 games or so! So the idea is that u have a normal staminabar for a game and one that shows the exhaustion of a player sinds the beginning of the season! And the arrows should simply reflect the mode and fitness of a player on gameday!
Also about the last-gen games I would like to say that everybody is just thinking in one direction and seeing things from only their own corner! From our point-of-view maybe it would be best for konami to just focus on pc-ps3 and 360! Only the businesslife is not as simple as that guys come-on!!
There are many different factors that play a role in producing a game for older generations or not! Just to try to give u different directions here are some factors:
- If EA does it, should konami just let them take the older generation market? Cause believe it or not their is still a pretty big market in older generation games!
- The first factors relates to all other factors as it is a sort of chain-reaction. Cause if they do not make older generation games people will either buy a ps3 for at least 400 Euro OR get a fifa ‘08 for just 45 Euro. So eventhough some might buy a ps3 just for pes2008 not all of them can do that, which results is dissapointment towards konami for abadoning their faithfull clients.
In my own opinion I think the time will come where as konami will not produce games for the older generations, only the time is not NOW. Mean while we should not focus on this subject, but rather come up woth things like the letter for seabass!!
Although I am afraid of the expectations that such a letter can create! Cause it is a good idea, but again I don’t think that things are as simple as we think they are. I am not saying that we should not write the letter, I am only saying that we should not create high expectations! Please note that the next-gen games is also a whole new world for people like seabass in which they still also will have develope themselfs!!
Furthermore please excuse my english, cause I do not originally speak or write english!!
Anyone get the feeling that the posts on this site have hugely reduced now that we know online will not be patched to any reasonable standard. I’ve given up on PES until I play a future product that really is worth buying. FIFA 08 is a completly and utterly superior game, more considered, more realistic, and has actually moved forward on next gen consoles.
Leave PES to the old gen consoles, it works on those and Seebass knows how to work old gen, so, do us all a favour and stay there, PC users, stick to Champ Manager, PC are not for footie games, buy a PS2 if you want a decent game of footy.
I truely hope that there is a European developer out there working on a trues next gen footy game (TIF2009?), the fact that we have to accept that only a Canadian & Japaness developer are capable is ridiculas, I want some variety in the market, until we get that, this and other PES fan sites are ulmost made redundant as the only discussions left are complaining and wishing for better products next time around, as for a letter to Konami, don’t make me laugh, to think that they would even entertain such imput from Konami’s obviously stupid buying public (you did buy PES2008 at full price), let alone, take on board the letters contents is just unrealistic and a waste of what little hope the PES Gaming community have left.
PES is dead!
PC is the only next gen thing arround. 360 and ps3 are just crap next to the might power of the dar sid…er, i mean, the power of PC. Just imagine: quad core cpu ( or evern mor cores and, maybe, multiple processors ), 3x SLI ( that’s 3 videocards working at the same time…sounds cool ), maybe TERABYTES of RAM….comparing PS3 or 360 against a PC is like comparing a Peugeor 407 against a Ferrari Enzo: the 407 still looks good, but the Ferrari looks like GOD’S car.
Anyways, making a game for 360 its almost the same as making a game for PC, remember that it’s allways running over Microsoft stuff.
i hav always played pro, alwas hated fifa, but was so dissapointed about pes2008 i got fifa08,i must say it is a very good game, moves very well, shootin and turning not the best but can b if u pull it off properly, overall fifa hav made a much better game than pro,pro would need to hav some game out next year to turn me back..
Wank off iam swapping PES2008 for Fifa 08
@lechuckgl
Yeah right! If you want a decent Gaming PC, one that will produce smooth & beautiful games, you need to spend around £1,500.00 and some! Get real, PC gaming is on it’s last legs, look around, when was the last time a game made exclusively for PC was named game of the year? Console gaming has well and truely killed PC gaming stone dead, read the numbers, PC gaming is falling back into the ’spotty geek in his bedroom’ situation where it came from whilst console gaming is now (largely thanks to the Wii)firmly in the living rooms of most families with most family members playing to verying degrees.
Pay £2,000.00 sit in a darkened room on your own playing on a PC or Pay £250.00 to play in the living room on the sofa with your friends, some beers and a pizza! I know which option I’d go for.
Enjoy your solitude!
assache:
I have a 800u$$ PC and I can play almost every new game at full quality ( you dont need a state of the art computer to have a decent gaming PC ! ). I think you should look it the other way: consoles are becoming PCs step by step. In the close future, there will only be one entertainment centre. I dont think that companies like AMD/ATI and nvidia would invest millions on a market that will dissapear in a short time.
You want to know when was the last time a game was develped only for PC ? What about WoW ? What about Starcraft 2 ? UT3 ?
With hundreds of USB ports, you can play with all your friends in your house, plus all your friends arround the world. Or you can just make a LAN PARTY. You really don’t understand anything about PC gamming.
@assache
What about Crysis? Oh, right, you haven’t played it.
Consoles are an important market, but as long as people have PCs in their homes, there will be games for it. The only reason games are made for consoles and then ported to PC, is because the process is easier than doing it the other way around. Luckily, we still get games made purely for the PC (Crysis is an example) that tap on its power. Remember that PCs still set the standard for new concepts and technologies, which are then used by manufacturers to make their consoles –that’s hardly a dead market.
Also, PC is the best platform to play the most popular genre at the moment: first person shooters. Besides, us PC users can merely upgrade our rig, and it’s a lot of years until we really have to revamp the whole thing, while you have to buy a new expensive console in a much shorter span (at least if you want to enjoy the latest games and such). And, for example, PS3 games are much more expensive thanks to the Blu-ray thing, which ATM is practically useless. Who spends more? I don’t think it’s us.
And what is that stuff about PCs not being made for footie games?? PC users CAN buy a gamepad, so your argument ends there.
Crysis! Don’t make me laugh, yes I’ve played it, yes on my PC that is capable of running it at full pelt, it’s no Game of the Year.
PC Gamepad, what’s the point of playing a PC game through a game pad, it defeats the object of playing on a PC.
What do you mean by
” what’s the point of playing a PC game through a game pad, it defeats the object of playing on a PC”
Playing on a pc means versatility, you can do what you want with it. I use my dualshock 2 on my pc. Works a treat, i don’t think i’m breaking some law according to assache.
I played Crysis, and it is definately my game of the year.
Wasn’t that impressed by the later lavels but up until then it was killer.
Pes has some serious problems at the moment. I don’t see why they removed so many great features from the previous game. Maybe they caved into pressure from the FA over licencing when they removed the editing options?
Hmmmmm…..Strange no one mentioned this interview with this game developer from ea a month ago, that mentioned pc will overtake consoles in about 5 years and will most likely be not the most omportant, but THE ONLY gaming platform in about 10 years, as it will be considerably cheaper for manufacturers and is powerwise not less supperior than a console…..
@Patcheen
Yes, I’m afraid you have broken the “Lae According to Assache”…… Take him down.
I’m still using the PS2, and since Winning Eleven doesn’t come out in North America until sometime in early spring… I think… WE/PES2007 is the most recent game available. Thankfully some savvy members of the site have developed some excellent OFs, and I can play even with this year’s (07-08) teams, Bundesliga included. And at least on the PS2, WE/PES2007 is still better than FIFA08.
However, I may still feel a pang of loss and regret if there aren’t any OFs written for PS2s (for WEPES) for the 08-09 season.
I’m going to wait a while longer to decide *WHICH* next-gen console to get. The fact that the “new” PS3 (PS3.14159, haha) isn’t backward-compatible is a factor, though–either I find an “older” PS3 that allows me to play PS2 games, or make my decision based solely on which next-gen console I find better.
From what I’ve read about the troubles with PES2008, I’m not in a hurry to rush out and get one, though. If I hear different when PES2009 is released, and also if one or other of the next-gens is clearly the better choice by then, I’ll get one, but not until then. I’m not an “early-adopter”, so I won’t be affected if it takes another year for everything to be sorted.
