Interfering With Play 10/06/08

This week’s Interfering With Play is probably the hottest one ever written; mainly due to sheer temperatures we are experiencing here in England at the moment. So much so, that the last thing many people wish to be doing is sitting in front of computer screens or in offices, working away. With such good quality football available on our TV screens for the next few weeks, the dilemma of beer gardens vs. big screen TVs is truly upon us, and as Euro 2008 carries on, the big games will only continue to come. In this busy time, both socially and weather wise, it is important to the remember that the gaming industry is still ticking on, with a number of huge titles, both single and multiplayer making their ways into the shops over the next few weeks and that sooner rather than later, the latest PES news will arrive on our doorsteps. When this occurs, be sure to become a PESGaming.com regular, as it is the best place for official press releases, news and facts about the latest Konami offering. But for now, lets move on with this week’s Interfering With Play.

Not On My Radar Mate!

Last week, during a gaming session round my mate’s house, I experienced a new aspect of PES2008. I turned off all player names, on screen displays and meters and just played the game, as it would be if it were a televised game. I kept the radar on, as I find it very useful, but other than that, it made playing the game a great deal different. I had to concentrate more which player was in possession of the ball before deciding which foot to shoot with, and found myself conserving energy as to not have players stamina bomb out before half time. Anyone who has not tried this yet, its something worth giving a go, as well as experimenting with different camera angles to make the game more challenging. Following this, I received e-mail from Jonathon, who made an interesting observation. Whilst I personally love having the radar on screen, he hates it, and informed me that there is no way of turning it off completely. On closer inspection I found this was true, and has been for a number of previous PES games. So I am offering this up to you, the PESGaming.com community. Is the radar a crucial part of your game? Do you wish you could turn it off completely, to add realism or do you feel it should not even be on the screen in the first place, and allow gamers to have the option to turn it on? Your comments, as always are greatly appreciated.

Fishing Or Angling

On the subject of camera angles, a huge debate always rages between me and my mates on which camera angle is superior. I am a PES veteran and therefore favour the Medium camera angle, which was the default angle on earlier PES games. Since PES5, the default camera angle has been changed to either long or wide, making the action seem to far away for me. However, most of my mates have got used to play with this angle and claim it to be the only way to play the game. Anyone who plays a lot of PES knows the way the different angles can affect a game, and that someone who is used to playing one angle will have an advantage over someone who doesn’t. With online gaming still poor when it comes to PES, the camera angle issue continues to be a problem between my group of mates, resulting in unfair multiplayer matches. Again, I ask the PESGaming.com community, which is your preferred angle? Do you use the default angle for each game, or do u prefer one slightly closer in? Are you even one of the strange folk who like to use the Vertical camera angle, similar to old school footballing games? Your views are welcomed on this subject.

Wii-For-All

There is a saying that it is a good man that sticks to his convictions, but it is a great man that can admit when they are wrong. A great woman, however, can find a way to blame the nearest man, and make it seem like they were right all along! Far from calling myself a great man, I will readily admit I was wrong about the Nintendo Wii. No, it is still nowhere near on a level playing field with the PS3 or 360, and probably never will be, but for what it is, it does it pretty darn well. I speak of course about the aspect of social gaming, and the way that anyone can pick up a controller and play a game, irrelevant of experience and ability. It is a great leveller among parents and their children or boyfriends and their girlfriends, being a real example of simple to play means everyone can enjoy it. I purchased one last week, for the soul purpose of social interaction. I have people round my house on a regular basis and find it to be a light hearted alternative to poker or PES, which do exclude certain people and normally sees the same people being victorious. I am not buying games like Super Mario Galaxy or No More Heroes, which are both excellent single player titles, instead I am opting for party games like Mario Kart and Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games, which can be played by everyone. Following on from this, the question I am putting on there is Pro Evolution Soccer on the Wii, is it worth the purchase? I do not expect an experience to rival PS3, but is it a game that is both multiplayer friendly and simple to play? Any advice would be taken on board.

English And Proud

Without England being at the European Championships this year, it allows me to be completely unbiased when watching games, simply enjoying them for what they are. Yes, as I stated a couple of weeks ago I will be hoping Croatia do well, but if they get knocked out in the group stages, my enjoyment of the tournament won’t be lowered. My point is, following a very poor game between France and Romania; International Football is nowhere near as enjoyable as the English Premier League. Yes, the Holland match was a very decent game, but you would expect to say games of that quality every week in the English top flight. Holland did show some excellent counterattacking play, but not as good as Manchester United or Arsenal have shown against Roma or AC Milan in the previous season. I am delighted to be able to watch this football on TV pretty much every night, but can’t wait the domestic season to return.

Wonder kid or Wonder bra

Final point of this week goes to the best player in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo. AC Milan fans, he has had a better season than Kaka and Barcelona fans, he score more goals than Lionel Messi. Technically he is superb, his trickery is as good as anyone ever, he is excellent in the air, exceptionally quick and can score shed loads of goals. He is at a great club in the form of Manchester United, who have a manager who has helped him developed into this phenomenal player. So why on earth would he want to move to Real Madrid? Whilst Madrid have found domestic success, they are still a long way off European glory, and have a team that is both unsettled and at time unprofessional. They have top wingers such as Robinho and Robben, who have failed to show consistent form due to constant position switching and so far are failing to fulfil their potential. The only reasons I can think of are the simple fact that his current female, a Spanish part girl, wants him closer to home and that the immense amounts of money are too much to overlook. But with footballers relationship’s lasting less time than their boot deals, his move to Spain could end up spoiling him as a player. Just look at players like Ronaldo and Henry, top footballers who have struggled in La Liga, and are nowhere near the players they once were. Your views on this would be, as always, very much appreciated.

That’s it for this week’s article. Get in touch via e-mail on danbolas@hotmail.com, or by leaving a comment on the bottom of this section (it’s the red button below). Its good to see some new names getting involved on the boards, and if you are going to leave a comment, make sure you leave your name, so everyone knows who is saying what!

The wii game is not an easy game to pickup but it is definitely better and you dont control a player but the whole team. The only disadvantages to the game is that you can’t edit players and the controls are kind of hard. And no master league is included.

I have never played the PS3 version but i think the PES for the wii is a nice alternative

  2. ramaxwy Says:

the radar is a must, i use the medium camera angle and sometimes the low one to be as close to the action as possible and to know where ur teammates are and also the opposing players u need the radar.
it also tells u where u are leaving gabs in ur defence and who u can pass to or take a shot cause u’ve got the space.

my friends also want me to shut it off because they say it gives me an advantage and real football doesn’t have a radar.
i tell them how can u call it an advantage when we all can see it and can use it to our advantage.
i also think that if u could turn it off it would kill people who like playing the beautifull game the way it’s supposed to be played( passing and keeping possesion as u look for a hole in the defence).
why can they just use it for the reason it’s there to see the whole pitch.

as for RONALDO i think that he should learn from other players their, mistakes because when u are succesfull in a team because u are used to the system and u and ur teammates understand each othter it does not mean that u can just blend in everywhere. just look at HENRY,BAPTISTA,MENDIETA,AIMAR ETC.

the most importent thing is having a coach that knows ur capabilities and knows how to use u in his system or else u can go from hype to *ss wipe.

If possible, radar should be implemented in the way madden has a “cone of view” for the quarterback. When a player is under your control, only THAT radar blip should have this view. An angle somewhat relative to a combination of real life field of view and player ability. Hope I made sense.

    Cheers!

  4. axhat Says:

And I forgot to mention that radar should ALWAYS be optional at the very least.

    Cheers!

  5. axhat Says:

Sorry for the triple post, but to add to the original idea, if a teammate calls for the ball his radar blip should also become visible if not already in the field of view. I promise, no more.

    the Wii:
Yes it has created a new niche market for the “casual” gamer, but overall it is way overrated.

We now have a new breed of gamer, one that doesn’t have an attention span of over 5 minutes, and so everything has to be made nice and superficial for their benefit.

What really concerns me is the impact this casual group of gamers is having on the gaming arena generally.

Everyone wants to cater for these gamers, and mainstream games are suffering. Games are becoming shorter - single player games now come in at just under 10 hours play. We used to get games that lasted atleast 20 hours. These seem to be the exception now.

Why do we have to get our gaming compromised to cater for this new breed of gamer? I’m more than happy for them to have their watered down gaming experience, as long as it remains out of the way of mainstream gaming.

What if suddenly the rules of football were changed to help the yanks enjoy the game more? what if we had 4 quarters to a game, with long ad breaks inbetween, timeouts and goals that are twice the length and height?
We’d get yanks saying things like “did you say the game between the liverpool lions and the manchester maulers? who’d have thought the lions would have won 54-31 in the playoffs?”
Yes the yanks think they’re getting a new sport and enjoying it, but why at the expense of the rest of the footy community??

as for PES on the wii - a superb idea for controlling play, definitely innovative, but it is probably around 3-4 years away from evolving into a top notch game.

shooting in the game is appalling. when you’re passing the ball around, you have a protective invisible barrier to keep defenders at arms length to help you acclimatise to the gaming system. i just wish konami had spent innovation time catering for the masses on the proper versions of the game, but instead the casual market wins over us.

    Spain:

as for ronaldo going to spain - he’d do well there.
Henry was becoming more injury prone when he left - he was hardly at the top of his game. and he had become a total primadonna.

look at ruud van gristleboy - he has shone out there since moving.

  8. stu Says:

got to say that i disagree with you on a few points dan.

the euros have been great overall so far, with only france, romania and greece playing negative football. germany, portugal, holland, spain, italy, sweden have all played really attacking football and it has been great to see these nations coming together and competing. personally, the international tournaments such as this, the world cup and copa america are far better spectacles than the premier league, mainly because players want to win for their country and not for money. i love it!

secondly, i see why c ronaldo wants to go to spain, he has won the champions league and premiership with united, and will not top his scoring record from last year, a fresh challenge awaits in a fantastic league, he wants to rise to a new challenge. if i was a top player, i would want to sample the premiership, serie a and la liga. And you said ronaldo (brazilian version) struggled to adapt in la liga!!! he has one of the best scoring records ever seen in that league whist at barca and real madrid. he was perfectly suited to that league. i agree however that henry has struggled, maily because he has on style of play and cannot adapt - he plays on the left, cuts in and shoots, defenders are not surprosed when he tries this every time.

as for the radar, i think its essential for switching play and spotting through runs from players. the camera angle is a big thing for me, i like the widest, highest furthest angle to see as much of the play as possible

  9. Francis Says:

I think the radar has always been a large part of PES; Seeing as one cannot have a camera angle from the players point of view, it’s sometimes hard to see where players are, if there is a gap in the opposition defence, and the most important point to the pro-radar party is that you can see whether a player will be onside for a long, high attacking through ball; talking of which, used to be really useful in past Pes’ but not in 2008 which I think is a shame.

You can’t do a nice lob right in front of your striker who has just popped onside as you used to. Anyway.

I think that whether you prefer the football presented at the Euro Champs or the Premiership depends on whether you know lots of players in the Premiership and their strengths, better than you do the international teams - I think the quality of international teams is slightly better than the Premiership, but as I’m an avid Liverpool supporter of course I’d prefer to watch some of the top flight matches; hoping that damn United lose, hoping that Mouriniho will steal Chelsea’s whole squad…

  10. Yousef Says:

I’ve always prefered the default camera angle and the radar for me is a MUST! Me and my mate hav never complained about it but I can understand that others have different preferences and maybe the next PES game should have the option of turning the radar on and off, it’s not really that difficult to implement, is it?

As for Ronny, well I’m a United fan and I’m saddened by the whole Real Madrid thing, I’ve always believed that they are like snakes and you can never trust them despite their rich history. Ronny owes it to the fans, the club and of course to Sir Alex.. after all we stuck by him in the aftermath of the World Cup 2 years ago and the club gave him the platform he needed to become the best player in the planet that he is now. Fair enough his dream is to play in Spain but I doubt he would be as great a player as he is now, look at Thierry Henry, he’s better off in Manchester. He’s an amazing player and he is at the right club.. besides, who are the European champions?

  11. john mcgrady Says:

ronaldo is definetly going to go, as, if he wanted to stay he wouldve just come out and said he was staying. as for if it is a good move for him. he has achieved as much as he can with united and its just arrogance on behalf of the english and premiership supporters, (if he doesnt do well) to say that its because madrid arent as good as united. why would it not mean that the premiership is not as good as la liga?

  18. bigzed Says:

I’m one of the “strange folks” who use the vertical angle - that way it’s much easier to pass through the defense without guessing. Anyone else feeling the same way? Also I played the PES2008 demo on ps3 and it didn’t have any other camera options than the default one. But the others such as the vertical camera angle are all there in the full version, right?

  19. Steve From Stoke Says:

A bit off topic but here goes :

I bought Pro Evo 3,4 & 5 for 2 quid from my local Gamestation yesterday mainly for collection purposes. Didn’t think id play on them but I had an hour spare so I started a Euro’s on 3. I remember thinking how realistic it was when it came out and I just wanted to get a few things off my chest which I know will get 2008 haters on my back :

1 : 3 is still brilliant now but really Arcadey.

2 : 3,4 & 5 through balls are awful and hardly ever come off now ive played 2008.

3 : The graphics compared to 2008 in HD is monumentally different.

4 : (cue backlash) 3,4 & 5 feels like I don’t have the freedom to do what I want. Lofted through balls are useless, crosses pointless compared to 2008 etc. I know 2008’s edit function might as well not be there, there’s no shop and the online lag is preposterous but the game is one of the most realistic and addictive football games ever. To say F*fa is catching up is a ridiculous statement. Theres loads of work to be done i know but this is the first evo i’ll be playing till October (despite GTA and Metal Gear being in my system)

  20. Original gamer Says:

    Pro Evo 3,4,5 > 2008

    Pro Evo 6 > All

  21. ramaxwy Says:

i agree with u STEVE FROM STOKE, once u get used to PES 2008
u just can’t go back to the previous games because u really feel the lack off freedom.
alot has to be done because it’s not perfect, but it’s way better than FIFA 08.

  22. dada3345 Says:

I think comparing international to club football is like comparing apples and oranges. From an outsider in the States, I can’t help but feel bored by the fact the top four spots will always be occupied by the “Big Four”. (I’m expecting some backlash from that.) And after watching Turkey vs. The Czechs I’m officailly all for Turkey.

  23. Proevo Says:

    FIFA is garbage!

Pro Evo is the best football game around, but PES2008 is not good. Too bad if people won’t admit it. I guess people are too young to remember the older PES titles.

    Cheers

  24. Nawaz Says:

RADAR - I think this is essential as real players can look around but obviously you cant from a fixed camera angle. What I think would be a good idea is for some clever filter on it. Maybe limit a circle around the player of how far the radar reaches out, its size could depend on how good player is or how much in control of the ball he is (it gets bigger when your still, smaller when your sprinting). Also maybe it could show further in the direction your facing, so you could sense people close behind but see further ahead (again distance and angle dependent on player/control).
