Interfering With Play - 15/07/2008
Posted by Dan Bolas in Interfering With Play on Tue 15 Jul
Welcome to this week’s Interfering With Play. Last week saw some technical difficulties with PESGaming.com, and as a result this article could not go live until a whole 24 hours later than was planned, which means the Champions League news solved the main argument from the column! Not that I am too concerned however, as the announcement seems to be the best possible news for all parties involved, with the likelihood of the most licensed PES game ever being primed for release later this year. With this said, I would like to move into this week’s Interfering With Play.
Simply The Best?
Over the past 10 months, I have stayed as neutral as possible regarding the 360 vs. PS3 battle that seems to dominate forums, message boards and blogs all over Internet. I have made it no secret that I own a PS3, and have been a Sony fan since the Playstation inception in the mid nineties. By the same token, I am fully aware and respect the fact that the 360 has been the dominate next generation console in this recent battle and for the first time, Sony are not market leader. Figures currently show Sony is now out-selling the 360, but this may be too little too late, with the divide and the battle lines clearly drawn. For many people out there, it’s a case of your either Sony or Microsoft, X-Box or Playstation, PSN or X Box Live. The question I am wondering is, why?
Up until the arrival of the X Box 360, there was no denying Sony was the top dog when it came to consoles. The original Playstation ended the Saturn and Dreamcast, pretty much obliterating Sega as a hardware company, and eventually saw off the challenge of the more powerful N64. The Playstation 2 followed suit, beating the Game Cube and the original X Box in the process. The secret, in my opinion, was both consoles had a seemingly infinite catalogue of titles to cater for every taste. 10 year old girls could pick up and play games about horses or Britney Spears, whilst older generations could play simple puzzle titles, with every other genre and niche catered for in-between. The temptation to buy a new console to play a specific title was not huge because there were several games similar to that one title on a system you already owned. Many of my friends would end up buying new consoles, only to take them back in return for more games for the PS One or PS2. Whilst other systems released ground breaking legendary titles, (Goldeneye, Zelda, Nights, Halo etc.) it was Sony’s era as people always ‘went back’ to their Playstation.
Whilst the original X Box was far from a flop, it was loud, bulky, had uncomfortable controllers and felt very dated. The 360 completely changed its image, and apart from the noise, changed all its cosmetic flaws to make an attractive console. Its release gave it a head start on Sony in the next generation wars, and Microsoft pretty much cast the original X Box to the scrap heap, solely concentrating on titles for its new machine. This meant, that just like the PS1 and PS2 before it, the 360 had a large back catalogue available before a single game had appeared on any of its competition machines, and as a result built up a market lead. This is still a key point in the wars today. Sony still increase the Playstation 2 catalogue, offering new releases every couple of weeks, whilst still trying to develop a new audience in the form of the PS3. Instead of 5 games being released on a Friday, you might get one or two, and if these genres don’t appeal to you, it might be another month before another title comes out that does.
So back to my original question of why is there such a divide between the 360 and PS3 gamers. Just like supporting your football team or listening to your favourite band, gamers will blindly defend their own machine; unable to see the benefits the other has to offer. My points last week were pounced upon as such. I mentioned the ability to use a number if different keyboards or controllers on the PS3, and 360 gamers fired back saying that was a feature on their machine. I meant to take this point further, saying that any Bluetooth headset or device is compatible with the PS3, be it your mobile phone or keyboard, and can be used as such. I also meant to take this further, saying Graphics Tablets, Desktop Fans and even phone chargers can be plugged in to the PS3 and used in the same way they would be on any PC. By the same token I am sure most PS3 gamers would love to have the wide selection of titles available on X Box Live Arcade, yes the PSN is getting more, but the retro games like Paperboy or Sensible Soccer would be a welcome addition to anyone’s gaming collection. I have used both X Box Live and PSN, and have never had any connection issues with either, although I have heard horror stories about both. PES withstanding, I have experienced no lag on any PS3 games online, and further state that as the free service, I am more pleased with it. 360 fans will disagree more.
So does it come down to personal taste? The PS controller is a familiarity for so many gamers now that is would be hard for some to imagine anything else. By the same token, those familiar with X Box machine would struggle to use the PS controller. Statistics can be used to show anything, but with the number of ‘exclusive’ titles linked to about one a month, the choice of which console really boils down to which you’re comfortable with. Some hate Bill Gates, and these will always stick by Sony, whereas other gamers are furious with Sony’s pricing structure and delayed release, meaning the opted for the 360 and have not looked back. Really, the winners here are us, the consumer, because while this war rages on, the quality of games and consoles will only improve!
League Of Our Own
A little more news regarding the potential for an Interfering With Play league. I have received around 30 possible entrants who have provided an e-mail address and over the next 7 days will be getting in touch with them. As this is a sample of things to come, the league will only feature 10 teams, with the more experienced online gamers getting an invite. Therefore over the next few days, if you are interested in taking part, please play as many online matches as possible, in order to get you game count up. Win Loss averages will not be taken into account for the league, but number of disconnections will. The league will also feature a mid-table policy, whereby no gamers will be able to be one of the ‘go to’ sides online. By thus I mean no Barcelona or AC Milan will be available, instead it will be more likely sides like Aston Villa or Athletico Madrid. Teams will drawn a random following the leagues creation, and gamers must stick with the same team throughout the 18 games of the season. More information will arrive in e-mail form over the next few days. If you are a PS3 owner who plays PES online, and is interested in entering a league, please e-mail me on the usual address with your name, age, location and a valid hotmail e-mail address.
Unbe-Wii-vable
This week’s IWP does seem to focus a great deal on consoles, but is merely a reaction to comments made by posters during previous weeks. Regular poster MN9AJAS made a valid point that the Wii in next generation based upon its control system, not just on its graphics, which many would consider to be last generation. He also states that developers aren’t making enough gamers orientated towards adults, and are happy to cash in with mini games and kid based titles. This of course harms the Wii as being called next generation, and developers have struggled to get to grips with making ‘grown up titles’ for the console, but I believe this is down to the blessing/curse of the Wii-mote. There is no denying the Wii-mote is excellent when playing certain sports games, with the potential for other sports games in the future (Brian Lara Wii anyone?) but unfortunately that’s where perfect control system ends. Super Mario Galaxy is the only game to get close to making a quality none sports title on Wii, and the control system that works so well for sports is a huge hindrance for all other genres. (Super Smash Brothers and Mario Kart also get special mentions) The lack of button combinations mean there is no way a game like Halo, Metal Gear Solid or Grand Theft Auto would ever work on it, and as soon as you start limiting games because of your control system, you begin to take away the title of next generation.
Cheaters Never Prosper
One quick final point, and it may be just me, but does the AI on PES seem to get unbelievably good following a goal. A case in point being during a recent friendly between Barcelona and Derby, following an Eto’o tap in, the Derby players suddenly seemed to be playing on steroids, with ridiculously sharp passing and electric pace. The fact that Robbie Savage outpaced Lionel Messi over half the length of the pitch made me wonder if this is an experience unique to me, or anyone else notices it. On further development, I have found opposing full backs turning up in the penalty box, undefendable crosses and set pieces and intentional slow down in order to bring the AI back on level terms. Anyone who has been a victim of this, please share your experiences with the rest of the community.
That’s your lot for this week’s column. Please feel free to send comments, I would rather people disagree with me than say nothing, that’s the whole point of the community. If you decide to not leave your name though, I will not acknowledge the comment during this article, it doesn’t even have to be your real name! danbolas@hotmail.com is the place you can find me on e-mail. In am not very bi-lingual and therefore only message me in English, you would be surprised the number of Spanish, Korean etc. e-mails I get on a weekly basis!
Thanks for Reading

I have relly noticed how the AI changes after a goal, especially the first goal of any game. In the ML, if i score first, i can prety much guarantee a 3 or four goal winning margin everytime, but if the CPU scores first, im struggling for a draw.
Again a very nice IWP. However, 2 weeks ago you said you would talk about the speed in PES. Probably you just forgot, or other topics were more important. I hope it something you’ll talk about next week then? Really want to hear your opinion about it.
greetz
yeah i’ve found the AI improvement very noticable following a goal. i often have to weather a storm of opponent attacking for a good 20 miniutes after i score, even if i had been dominating the game beforehand! this occurs especially if the goal is scored in the first half. this flaw may be why i had a 3-3 draw with chelsea in a 10 miniute match!
The AI Cheating issue has been around ever since PES4 (as far as I know) and, I think that’s something that made games such as PES6 so addictive.
However, The issue here is that the AI shifts the momentum randomly -it- doesn’t matter if you’re winning or losing or whatever -sometimes- the computer favors you for NO reason at all -and- other times everything goes the computer’s way.
It is this randomness that really annoys the fans of the series -because- what determines it?? Why does it happens?? PES only haves ONE player Attribute that influences in THIS regard; Mentality.
Konami SHOULD develop a system to determine a player’s Consistency (and a Team’s consistency)-because- the Mentality Stat clearly doesn’t covers it properly.
But anyways, there must be a reason for the sudden changes in the AI; Defenders consistently making ridiculous mistakes, Messi consistently giving the ball away easily, the complete Team suddenly stops running, etc, etc, etc..
For example, in this case; Barcelona vs Man Utd -if- you are using Barcelona -and- you have effectively contained Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Ronney -then- the momentum should shift to your favor.
For every action there’s a reaction. There must be a reason for the AI sudden shifts.
A major reason for not wanting to go with the PS3 has got to be the price of the machine. They sort of money they wanted for it was obscene. It was even more bewildering for Europe, given that the US equivalent price was almost half of what was being asked for here.
Sony have been taking us to the cleaners for years. Yes the PS2 was and is a great machine, but Sony grew fat and ignorant in the process - catching the same disease which saw the demise of Sega as a console giant.
Sony made a lot of noises about what the new ps3 was capable of, and even tried to convince us that we didn’t really want rumble in controllers.
The fact of the matter is that sony took its gaming masses for granted, and thought we’d all spend any amount of money they asked for, for their next great machine.
How many launch titles for the machine are yet to materialise? How many features/games are we still waiting for?
The 360 launched first, had a very good launch title range, was backed by many software houses, and has delivered what it promised.
sony said the ps3 was the most powerful console around, and that the 360 was not a threat. To date, we’re still waiting to see any evidence of a PS3 title that wipes the floor with the 360. Multi-platform releases again show the machines are very close to one another. So why aren’t ps3 titles considerably better looking that the 360?
So many undelivered promises, delay upon delay, lie after lie, sony have yet to win over the masses.
The 360, whilst it had its flaws - RROD, the cost of Live, the extortionate HDD prices, but as a gaming machine, it really is superb. The controller is a true contender to the sony controller.
As for people vehemently defending their console of choice - its a modern take on rivalry. I own a 360, and once the price of a ps3 drops to the sub £200 mark, i’ll finally purchase one, but until then, i watch eagerly to see how much longer sony delay AAA titles like LBP and various other games. Sony messed up, they aren’t quite down and out, but they’re on the ropes.
Good text Dan…hope to see you in online league …sending my info to you yust about now …3…2…1…massage sent !!
@ dougiedonut.
Oh my god, how much do you want a PS3 to cost so you can buy it, 100 dlls, are you crazy, come on, if you just can see that the PS3 is cheaper than the xbox, you are blind, i live in the US, the PS3 is only $399.00 dlls, $100 dlls more expensive than xbox, but you got everything,
The xbox is 299.00, but you have to buy the wireless, $100 more, you want online, $80 dlls gold membership a year, you want to watch some hd movies on your LCD, guess what, 150$ more (even worst, it’s noy for sale anymore, so no movies, no HD since toshiba lost the war on formats, you want HDMI, lol, $50 more bucks, you want a bigger HDD, you have to pay more than 130 dlls for 120 gb ( it has to be fromo microsoft), when for the PS3 you can buy any hard disk that a laptop can use, on ebay 320 gb for 100dlls
Conclusion, the Xbox is more expensive for abour 100 to 150 dlls, and you get stuck with hd dvd (if you can still but it,, hellooooooo, blu ray is the future, a blu ray player cost about 400 dlls, and with the PS3 you have for free.
I’m so tired of peolple saying the Xbox is cheaper than the PS3, just do the math.. and if you want your xbox to play but ray, just buy a PS3, LOL.
nikicampos
The ps3 is around $600 in the UK, and the 360 is around $400. I think there’s a considerable difference there.
I agree that the wifi support and other stuff increase the costs for the 360, but the ps3 is way overpriced, particularly over here.
I don’t consider the ps3 good value for money, and i certainly don’t see a compelling reason to get one.
all multi-platform games are very close to one another on the 360 and ps3.
I can’t see a single game that is a ps3 exclusive that could make me purchase the machine. a sad indictment for the ps3 in my opinion.
i am not saying its a bad machine, but its an overpriced machine. we don’t have backwards compatability either here, and we have to fork out $80 for a new rumble controller.
bluray is the only reason i’d want a ps3, but again, i’m not fussed. i bought the hd-dvd drive for $50 plus a couple of films. there’s a huge hd-dvd library and films cost around $8 or less in some cases.
here’s a challenge - convince me that the ps3 is the way forward. talk architecture and games, and let’s see how far we get.
ps - thanks for refraining from bad language in putting your points across - nice to see some adult interaction!
Here is the cover for PES 2009 may be fake but it looks pretty authentic to me if anyone is interested.http://www.4freeimagehost.com/uploads/d19d909f38c9.jpg
Pro Evo 2008 is the worst for cheaty AI. I do remember that in Pro Evo 3 sometimes the computer would turn a bit super, and it is present in 4, 5 and 6.
The cheaty AI is so blatant in 08. It makes the game unplayable for me as it seems that before the match begins, the computer decides who will win. There’s nothing you can do about it.
E3 is currently taking place and guess what, Xbox 360 now have FFXIII, which was suppost to be PS3 exlusive. I got shouted down about claiming MGS4 would be ported to 360, but watch this space.
I like the PS2 controller, so I’d be most interested in buying a PS3. If Sony dropped the price of its console then sales would pick up. As a result, it’s fighting it out with the 360 for 2nd place whilst the Wii surges ahead in 1st.
I have to agree with Dougiedonut on this one.
The PS3 is a games machine first.
When the PS3 was announced, I was excited about the games I could play on it not the Blu-Ray movies. I could not care less about Blu-Ray, Blu-Ray is dying on it’s feet. Sales of Blu-Ray, since the demise of HDDVD, have actually fallen! The Blu-Ray argument is a dead one, people want to download and stream content, that is the future not Blu-Ray.
I don’t know if anyone caught the coverage of E3, but, unfortunately, what I saw from all the manufactures with regards to gaming, looked pretty average.
Trust me, the PS3 is a nice piece of kit, but, it’s just not needed whilst I have, in my opinion, the better gaming machine and one that is getting one of my all time favourite games, Final Fantasy.
People ran out, not very long ago, cueing around the block for an I-Phone that didn’t even have something as basic as 3G and it cost them a bomb. Now they watch whilst the next lot come out at the same price with more features in less than a year!
My point is this. The PS3 is a lovely machine, but, if Sony are to be believed, it has a ten year life cycle. It is now in it’s second year (2008 year of the PS3!) and still has some growing to do. Why on Earth would I go out and pay £300 for something I know I will be able to pick up in around 18 months for £200, maybe less, with a better catalogue of games, loads of cheap trade in titles, Exclusives that I have to play, Dualshock 3 in the box and better updated firmware?
As far as the cheating AI, I have noticed it and I think I quite like it. It tends to make me be very cautious after scoring and I tend to improve my defending tenfold. I think it can be played, but, it is definitely apparent.
i will have to agree on the AI cheating. I dont know if its just me, but whenever i score first, in the inmediate play that follows, the computer either scores or comes very close to achieving it. also if the game is pretty balanced and the computer scores first, lets say in the 60th minute is very hard to even the score. by the way i play PES6, which i think is yet the best PES out there.
concerning to the PS3 and 360 battle, i cant really say anything because i still dont own one or the other. but i am thinking in getting one soon, and i have compared opinions and features and prices, i mean i am getting informed, and ill have to say, i am leaning towards the PS3 side.
Hey guys,
Dougiedonut(in response to your challenge!) can I point you towards http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/games/archives/2006/12/07/ps3_vs_xbox_360_a_developer_speaks.html for an interesting read? Obviously the blog was written well over a year ago now, and of course developers have got to grips more with both systems (as can be seen by the impressive releases of GTA on both platforms as a prime example) - however as a gaming enthusiast and non-developer myself I found it a completely unbiased review of the two.
I’m also a former (note former) 360 owner, having sold it on eBay to help me fund my purchase of a PlayStation 3 system. Although not before I’d experienced such games as GoW and CoD4. I’ve always been a Sony fanboy I’ll gladly admit, and the fact that the number of ‘exclusive’ titles is diminishing fairly rapidly does have me worried. However with the release of PlayStation Home and the way the PS3 is expanding on a social scale (coupled with the compatibility of it’s little brother-toy the PSP) makes me think the PS3 has more to offer. Of course I could spurt out the Blu-Ray argument, but then I’m not naive enough to not see that there’s two sides to every coin (a friend buys cheap HD-DVDs for exactly your reasons).
Now, onto the subject of PES AI…if the computer scores one more ‘unstoppable’ freekick against me from the edge of the box, I’m gonna smash my PS3 right in the…
@assache
Well, first, don’t compare apple to sony, i love apple products, but lets face it, they have a new release od the same product every 6 months.
I know the PS3 is a gaming machine, but lets face it, for people how want a bluray also, they have it for free, i wanted both, so i saved myself $400 dlls.
@dougiedonut
Hi man, yeah, it’s nice to have some debate about console games.
Let me tell you some facts about PS3.
First of all, i don’t like Halo, and for me that’s the only exclusive game that Xbox has that sells a lot.
Another reason, the bluray has almost the double of capacity than a DVD (xbox format), just take a look at MGS4, it amazing, it looks better than any other game. One of the reason the multiplatform games look a like, it’s because the developers work on xbox format because it’s easier, and then to PS3, that why the look similar, leaving the blu ray empty, when they start to develop a game in blu ray, we will see the difference, PS3 it’s the future. All the great games with incredible sound and image will only fit in a bluray. Soon all the developers will work on the PS3 version and then work on a smaller version for the Xbox.
Some PS3 exclusive games, MGS4, Gran Turismo Prologue and 5, Tekken 6, Formula One, Socom 4, Ratchet & Clank, Resistance: Rise of Man, Ridge Racer 7, Devil May Cry 4, Heavenly Sword and many more, and one more thing, fot all of those who love ROCKSTAR games like GTA IV, guess what, no more for xbox, all of the games from now on will be for the PS3, Rockstar it’s working on a new franchise game exclusively for the PS3, it will fill all the bluray.
So maybe right now Xbox has more games, but the PS3 is selling like crazy, and the developers just love to make games better and bigger, and the PS3 is the answer, plus PS2 had more exclusives than xbox, so this is coming back again, right now it’s like 83 exclusives for Xbox 360 to 62 PS3, so Ps3 is catching up.
Not devil may cray 4, i meant Time crisis 4.
Nice to see my comments we mentioned!!
Not to diss the PS3 more but I hated the PS3 controller. The trigger buttons that replaced the old L2 and R2 are horrible. I ended up buying a PS2 controller and adapter when I had one!
@g13nn
The HD DVD’s are so cheap right now, because they wont make them any more, Blu ray wont the war format.
Best Buy, one of the best electronic store in the US, has 800+ Blu ray titles and 250+ HD DVD titles, you can’t buy new titles on HD DVD, so eventually, the people who have HD DVD will be like the ones years ago with the Laserdisc.
I just read the article….isnt this a pro evolution soccer website…half the article is about ps3 vs xbox….and all ur news is days older than other sites….i have no idea why i keep coming here when there are better sites like WENB’s http://www.winningelevenblog.com/ …. it seems to me they get news way before this site does and there understanding of rumors is far better than the creator of this sites.
I agree
PES AI cheats all the time. I don’t really care for it, but there is ONE thing that really pisses me off. Maybe it’s a bug and not cheating, because it seems to happen a lot in PES 2008 but seldom in PES 6. Sometimes the screen goes blank for a set piece (eg. a throw in), and when the image reappers I can see the AI players standing all by themselves, and those of my players who should be on that position are about 30 feet away. WTF? Where have you seen a team let their opponents take an offensive set piece without covering the most obvious receivers?
The 19 post, it’s not me, i don’t agree.
@ Edgard.
You should learn to read, this is IWP, another section of the site, it’s like general talk about videogames or whatever Dan wants that he feels to talk, it’s up to us if we want to read it, i personally like it, if you don’t, just leave, and by the way, this is the only site that has given real info for the PES 2009, Champions League, confirmed.
@ Dan.
Just a note, you should make this section safer, as you can see i didn’t post no. 19, maybe that you have to login before you post.
Thanks.
G13nn - thanks for that article link. I don’t mean to rubbish the developer, but its hardly a mainstream developer that is pushing either machine on their capabilities!
But point taken about how he says that the PS3 has the edge, I accept that. But here’s food for thought - how many PS3 titles are displayed at 1080p?
I popped into a game store, and just checked the backs of game covers, and invaribaly found that most games went up to 1080i max. There is the odd example of a 1080p game.
Compare that to the 360 - where a good number run at 1080p.
People have been on about how superior the architecture of the PS3 is, and how it is the most powerful console around, but I’ve yet to see how it is even slightly better than what the 360 is producing. Sure the 360 may have reached its peak of graphical abilities, but the PS3 is hardly leaving it in its wake.
Now as for bluray capacity - how many games currently truly use its ability? Games on bluray seem to require up to 10 mins install times before you can do anything to help speed up ingame loading times. Not the end of the world granted, but it shows that the bluray drive is slower than DVD drives, and doesn’t really to date offer much more than DVD.
With the new 360 dash update which will allow full game installations to hard disk, who cares if the game is delivered on a single bluray disc or up to 5 dvds - if you have a popular game - just install it to the hard disc, and then that ends any debate about the capacity of bluray.
Would you rather have a slow loading system using bluray, or run off a hard drive? I’ll take the hard drive anyday.
I probably sound like a 360 fanboy, but I can assure you I’m not! I want to get the PS3, i’m sure there will be some worthwhile games getting on the system at some stage, but right now I see no incentive to get one.
I don’t really care about exclusive games for systems, i just want a decent system which plays decent games - and so far the 360 more than does that.
We’ve seen too many empty promises from sony for the ps3, and they continually screw the UK/European markets over.
We get the raw deal every time.
By the way - PS3 owners - are games region-free or not?
The 360 has a good collection of region-free games, which helps with purchasing from abroad for good deals.
The one thing that would convince me to get a PS3, even at its inflated price would be ease of adding updates to PES.
Can anyone tell me if it is easy to apply new option files, or user created patches that most people have done in the past with modded PS2s?
If it were possible to update team kits/squads, or other modifications which were not possible on the 360 (I don’t want to mod a machine to do so) then that would convince me to get the ps3 - assuming the game can be installed to disc too.
So current status is that the 360 is still comfortably the games machine of choice.
I agree with mn9ajas - the ps3 controller is crap.
the trigger buttons are not concave, so you’re not sitting comfortably on them.
I hope the new rumble controller feels better too - the current ones are way too light, they feel like they’re going to break in your hand if you hold them too tightly!
@dougiedonut
Yes the games and movies are region free on ps3.
On the subject of different consoles. I recently decided to purchase a copy of Pes 2008 ps3(even though pes6 on ps2 is way better) thinking “three months before the release of Pes 2009, i sholud be able to pick it up for £20 now”.
To my horror I find that it is still priced in high street stores at £45 bloody quid WTF!!!!
I check at least eight different stores, and they were all the same price.
However when i looked at the PSP, 360, and PS2 versions they were priced £18.99, £19.99 and £15.99 WTF!!!
This takes the bloody piss, especially with the Ps3 version being the worst out of the lot.
I am guessing this is because the PS3 version has sold the least amount of copies, and not because Sony think that all PS3 owner’s are morons.
@ simon
Play.com: 26.99
Gamestation: 29.99
And a definite new favourite of mine
Shopto.net: 24.99
and on ebay im sure it will be even cheaper
i no its not the 20 quid u hoped for, but its a far cry better than 45 :)
hope i have helped
and with the xbox vs ps3 argument, had a 360 and a ps3, sold my 360 at christmas because i was finking this year ps3 will come into its own, gta 4 and mgs4 aside, im struggling to justify my decision, seeing as haze woz a terrible dissapointment, and e3 didnt give me much to shout about besides resistance 2 and MAG (which im sure wont be out til xmas 2009). I will stay loyal to my ps3, not much to shout about tho.
and pro evo champions league license, couldnt be a better addition, but i hope the gameplay gets sorted!
Sorry i meant Konami not sony.
Cheers tommo i will give them a try.
I think in time unless Microsoft bring out a more powerful machine, the PS3 will begin to dominate.
As the PS3 becomes more dominant i think we will begin to see more PS3 exclusive titles.
At the moment due to the low sales of the PS3, there is a need for games developers to make their games multi platform, to ensure maximum number of sales.
Within the next couple of years I fully expect PS3 games to exceed the limits of the 360, this is when developers will start to develop more PS3 exclusive titles.
Microsoft however are a completely different opponent to Sega, or Nintendo. Since Nintendo have clearly taken the Kiddie and casual gamer route, that leaves Microsoft and Sony to battle it out for dominance of the serious gamer.
Microsoft are currently in the position Sony were in a few years back with the PS2.
Whilst Sony had the inferior machine, they had a better catalogue of games and a lower price tag than the X-Box.
Now the roles are reversed and it will be interesting to see where things go from here.
“I think in time unless Microsoft bring out a more powerful machine, the PS3 will begin to dominate.” Simon McDermott.
That is a very interesting point. What if Microsoft do bring out a more powerful console? What if it’s in the next couple of years when the PS3 will be, supposedly, in it’s fourth year of a ten year life cycle?
If this was to happen, there are rumours of a 720, would it naturally be more powerful than the PS3, but, with a huge range of back catalogue and an already familiar game design tool for game developers?
What then for the PS3?
A world of what if’s, pure speculation and rumour of course!
@dougiedonut
just stick to your X360, if you are so blind, like i know you are by your post, then don’t buy the ps3 now, buy it in 2 or 3 years, and when you try to sell your x360 in 3 years be happy to get 100 dlls for it. lol.
“Hi man, yeah, it’s nice to have some debate about console games.” nikicampos post 14 @dougiedonut.

Is this the same person? If it is, debate over! Starts throwing toys!
it’s over, a debate can end you know, i doesn’t have to las forever, so that’s why i just said, stick to your x360, if that makes you happy, then don’t buy a ps3.
And besides, i just don’t care about people choosing x360 or fifa, as long as i don’t buy any of those i’m happy, i only post what i post because this guy was asking for some info on the PS3, if after all i said and other people said, he is not willing to buy a PS3, then, ok, debate over, keep your 360, everybody happy.
@nikicampos
no need to get so defensive about the ps3. i’m sure it has its uses, but right now i’m struggling to see why i should get one.
If you recall from post 8, I issued you a challenge to convince me that the ps3 is the machine to get right now.
You talked about bluray games - which is all about storage capacity, rather than introducing anything new to gaming.
As much as you can’t accept it, i’m open to getting a ps3, and i’ve said eventually i will get one, but clearly there isn’t a system selling game out for it that can convince to me get it.
I am more than happy sticking to my 360 for now, but i hope eventually the ps3 will be worth getting.
it’s just a matter of taste… the end ;)
To that idiot useless, good for nothing, poor opion throwing person called dougiedonut. Why the hell are you on the back of nikicampos. The guy made a great point, and if you want to stick with your 360, good luck, but don’t say something stupid that the ps3 has not got a system selling game, are you thick, or just putting others down. Go to any local game shop and pick up games that are not out on the 360 but only the ps3, you’ll see why. The blueray is a feature, a massive feature, something that the 360 cannot deal with. The 360 is a good machine.
So to sum up, stop being an idiot, you are one of the few people on this site, who’s points normally upset others. Grow up!!!
@Al-in the house
If you can’t accept that people have different points of view, then i really don’t think you should be on this site.
can you quote any abuse towards the ps3 from me??
i am giving my opinions in an opinion section.
you’re not forced to read about other people’s opinions, and they clearly seem to bother you.
i said that for me, i don’t see a system selling game that would make me want to purchase a ps3, given that i already have a 360. name an exclusive that is a to die for game?
mgs4 is the closest i can think of, and even that is a very acquired taste at best.
yes bluray is a very big feature, but its hardly being used so far on the ps3 - that’s my point!!
there are only a handful of games in proper 1080p - that’s something that you should be thinking more about.
for such a powerful and wonderful system - why isn’t 1080p the norm?? even mgs4 only does 720p.
its people like you that have trouble handling the fact that your view is not globally shared.
The converse of the whole discussion would herald similar arguments - i.e. as an existing ps3 owner, what is it about a 360 that would make you want to get it?
if you find the question too difficult to comprehend, then i suggest you stay off public forums, where opinions are extolled.
@dougiedonut
Ok, you are just at a point where you don’t want the hear, i just told you all the goodies that PS3 has, and nothing, i told you that Rockstar games (grand theft auto) has sign an exclusive with sony, new franchise(means new game) for the PS3, any other GTA will only release in the PS3.
So, we have all rockstar games as exclusive for PS3, exclusive PS3 Socom: Confrontation, if you like COD4, this is the best next thing, and since COD4 will get old and COD5 will go back to WWII, Socom sounds great…PES 2009, they are supposed to release an exclusive mode or something to the PS3.
So, if non of this made you change your mind, well, nothing will.
And other thing, MGS4 does support 1080p and the full 50gb of the bluray, it looks amazing, and games will only look better after this one.
@nikicampos
“so, we have all rockstar games as exclusive for PS3″
What are you on? Where did you get this huge insight?
No offence, but, you are starting to sound a little ridiculous now, let it go!
Your argument is dead, like a dead person in a dead town on dead day!
You PS3 gamers are very tetchy! Dan, I would drop the PS3 Vs 360 debate. This has had the biggest response to IWP for some time (since the info seekers came back!). Lets get back to PES.
Champions League anyone!
I have to agree with Assache; Dan this was a good IWP but unfortunately [and somewhat predictably(!)] the comments section has been overrun by PA3 vs Xbox 360!
@ dougiedonut; you made a good argument [in my opinion] with balanced reasoning, and were a little attacked!… :(
however, nikicampos was nice to tell us what he/she thought was going to be exclusive to the PS3 soon.
Dan, it is nice to see that you have a widespread amount of people replying, although not so suprising that not one person has voted for the Wii’s version of Pes :P
Thanks D
-Francis
p.s. with regards to the AI’s ridiculous come-back goals; the only example I get of this is sometimes a crazily good free kick gets scored against me in the ten or so minutes after I have gone into the lead. It would be interesting to set up some kind of poll to see how the different users of PS3 or 360 view this? Ie.
1)PS3 or 360?
2)Do you feel the AI has increased opportunity to score when trying to respond to conceding a goal?
3)If so, how? Incredible Free kicks? Undefendable crosses? Dodgey penalties?
And so on!
@nikicampos - I’m just waiting for soemthing on the ps3 that will do it for me. Current multi-platform releases mean the ps3 versions are not worth moving over for.
I’m a huge SOCOM fan, so fingers crossed that is a stonking game.
I’m running the risk of more abuse, but why are a number of games more expensive on the ps3, when the equivalent games are sometimes up to £10 cheaper?? what’s the justification for the price difference?
@Francis - thanks for being able to understand my argument!
Its a shame there are others around that don’t understand the principles of a debate.
Does anyone else,whilst their playing Pes 2008 Ps3,feel like turning it of and putting Pes 6 Ps2 back on?!?!?
WHY IS IT THAT PRO EVO 2008 ON THE PS3 IS REALLY EASY, BUT ON THE PS2 IT’S REALLY HARD (DUE TO THE CHEATING COMPUTER)?
I THINK THAT PRO EVO 2008 IS SLIGHTLY BETTER THAN THE 6TH ONE, BUT THE TERRIBLE CHEATING A.I RUINS IT. I THINK OF MYSELF AS A DECENT PLAYER, BUT 2008 IS THE ONLY GAME IN THE SERIES IN WHICH I DON’T HAVE IT ON THE HARDEST DIFFICULTY.
ALSO, DOES ANYONE ELSE NOTICE THAT IF YOU PLAY PRO EVO ON A BIG SCREEN AND THEN MOVE TO A SMALLER SCREEN, THE DIFFERENCE IS REALLY NOTICABLE. THE GAME RUNS SLOWER ON THE SMALL SCREEN AND IS NOT AS GOOD AS A RESULT.
@dougiedonut.
Well, i’m glad that you like socom, and don’t get me wrong, i’m not trying to pick a fight, but if socom won’t make you change your mind about going PS3, then, probably nothing will, this year it’s the last “big” exclusive title for the PS3, i just don’t know why you are so desperate or anxious to switch to PS3, i mean, if you had no Xbox 360 or PS3, i would say go buy a PS3, but that’s not the case, you have your 360, it’s a good machine, i prefer PS3, but, many people have 360’s and they are more than happy, and if you say that PS3 games are more expensive, then i don’t really see a point for you to go PS3 right now.
About prices being more expensive, well, i live in USA, and they are the same for both console, $59.99, but like you said about the consoles PS3 being more expensive, I just think that sony has a different strategy for every country.
@Dougiedonut - One question, who gives you the right to judge who should be on this site and who should not???
This is a debate, that has got out of hand, but then again it is a debate. Reading your previous posts in the past, you seem to make a habbit of attacking people. Everyone is allowed there opinion, however yours seems to always be 100% negative to PES. Why come on this site yourself, if your so negative and only seem to think that your right an no one else is. Beats me!!!
@Anonymous
The only question i am asking of people attacking me is:
If you can’t handle healthy debate, why partake in a debate?
Guess what - I can handle the fact that people have different points of view, and that they differ from me.
There is no right or wrong for this debate - its all about opinions. There are people who prefer the 360 to the PS3.
PES - i am deeply dissappointed with pes2008. I have every right to be. Nothing would make me happier than to have a pes2009 that addresses some of the issues we had with pes2008.
Get ready to be shocked by praise from me, should the game deliver.
@nikicampos
I loved the old SOCOM games, and haven’t read anything on the new one. I too do hope it is a good game, so fingers crossed. I am hoping that pes2009 has something different to offer on the ps3, as that would definitely make me get one. just to reiterate - if the ps3 allowed easier editing of option files, and possible addition of custom patches, then it would be a no brainer.
in the uk, i’ve notice in many cases that multi-platform games seem to cost a tenner more on the ps3. i’d have thought sony would have kept the prices in league with the 360 prices all the way, but clearly not.
yes sony and microsoft have different policies for the states and europe. we get everything late, and at excessive prices relatively!
@Anonymous in 45 - I find it funny you used an ‘anonymous’ name for your useful insight! He He He
Having read all of the posts now I think there is only one thing left to say - Pro Evo Vs Fifa!!! NO I’M ONLY KIDDING!!!!
Getting back to PES 2008, has anyone noticed or found additional oddities like the licenced balls when playing a spanish league?
I too have noticed a huge difference Jari@43 when playing on different tvs. Going from SD to HD and then from HD 19inch to HD 32inch the game plays in a completely different way. I think it may have something to do with the way the picture is displayed, as some screens scrunch the picture up and others seem to expand the actual picth itself!!
@ dougiedonut
I see your point regarding the article, and I can accept that you’re open-minded enough to see that the PS3 may have the edge but right now isn’t offering anything expansive enough to warrant a purchase. I too agree…the only thing that swung the 360vsPS3 debate in Sony’s direction for me was their reliability in the past on both their older systems, in producing great gaming titles, and always pushing the boundaries with releases (games such as God of War were being released way after the PS2’s implementation into the gaming market and it was still stretching the system to it’s limits). I see the PS3 as the next step in evolution for Sony, and technically they should be able to offer us gamers a lot more than Microsoft in the future if their past systems are anything to go by. The longevity of the PS2 and, to a degree, the PS1 helps me think that in time the PS3 will dominate, just as you said earlier. Anyway…time will tell, ey? :P
Heading back to Pro Evo (as this is a Pro Evo fansite after all) I feel the game needs to head in a more ‘arcade’ direction. Most people will lynch me for saying this, however FIFA has the game spot on (aside from gameplay, and tbh that’s not a million miles behind). I’ve always thought that if you could combine FIFA’s presentation and game-options with Pro Evo’s gameplay then you would truly have the best footballing game ever created. I’d call it…Fifalution ;)
@g13nn
I hear what you are saying about sony’s reputation and commitment to past consoles, and you have a very valid point.
My only issue with sony is that they have been in a real comfort zone, and able to dictate conditions with the ps3 - such as the extortionate launch prices, controller controversy etc, but thanks to the 360, they had to pull their finger out, and adapt to the market, rather than lead it.
i’m sure the ps3 will have a long shelf life, which should make picking up games at bargain prices very good too.
As for your Fifalution - surely that should be Pro fifalution?? B-)
@dougiedonut - AKA “I HATE SONY”
your obviously a real 360 loyal person, fair enough. But again, you have made a statement “thanks to the 360″.
Thanks for what, the 360 controller is rubbish. You say the controller controversy???? The controller is really not that different from the PS2 controller, which might i add out sold the 360 machine nearly twice over…..
Need i say anymore, my bullying, good for nothing comment friend”
My 0010 bits on the Wii: Talk of how “next-gen” any console is really doesn’t matter. All that matters is the games. If a platform has games you want to play, then you have some real motivation to buy that platform. If there isn’t, you don’t. I am a PC gamer first and foremost, which is probably why talk of “next-gen” just sounds like “blah blah blah” to me. As of 2005 when the X360 was released everyone was saying “HD and online play is next” gen but for PC gamers that was ten years previous. PES 2008 for the Wii is hands down my favorite soccer video game. If you’ve never played it, my assertion is even more absurd than you think. There’s no real league mode with seasons. There’s no real management. There’s no ball handling or footwork moves. That’s all on top of no HD graphics. Yes, it has online play but since I got it I’ve found nobody online playing, hah, so you can pretty much scratch out online play even though it has it technically. So why is it my favorite soccer game? Have I never played other soccer games? I’ve had a soccer game on every system I’ve ever owned since FIFA 96, actually it was even further back in the 80s when I had an Atari ST but I can’t remember the name of the game. PES 2008 for the Wii is my favorite soccer game because it’s the first to capture what I call “the team consciousness”. You know how when a really great team plays, especially when they make this great passing play that ends in a perfect goal? It’s almost like they’re psychic, like they can see the field and all its players from above. Okay, big whoop, we’re looking at it from above in every video soccer game. However, it’s not just being able to see but to coordinate. On the Wii version, let’s say you have the ball. You dribble the ball with the nunchuck stick, that’s standard. Passing is completely different, you point with the remote to the place on the field where you want the ball to be received and press the pass button, the nearest player will run to the ball. If you press and hold the pass button, the nearest player will start running towards that spot, then you let go of the pass button and your player will pass. That way the receiver can catch the ball at a full run. It gets better though. You can point at any player you can see, grab them with the A button and drag a run line. Not only do you have control of the player possessing the ball, you have total control of all of the players you can see on the field. Decoy runs, overlaps, through balls, spreading out the defense on a corner, it’s all possible. Passing plays are great, you can just press the pass button on each player you want involved in the order you want them to receive and it’ll do it, you can click faster than they pass and they’ll just do it. There is AI and the players you’re not controlling will do their job, but you don’t have to depend on them. You tell them where to run, you tell them where and when to pass, you tell them who to mark. It’s absolutely marvelous. I’m not trying to tell people to buy a Wii, I’m not trying to tell people that it’s the best system out there (that’s for people who can only afford one console). However, if you have a Wii and you like soccer, do NOT pass up PES 2008 Wii unless you’re waiting for the 2009 version. In any case, if you have the console, get the Wii version of PES, whichever edition. It creates a completely fresh way to play soccer, what it lacks in features it more than makes up for in gameplay.
sorry meant to post this video of the Wii version, it makes it pretty clear:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntIz_hA4STM
Sounds like a good Football game Matt… can only hope they make an even better one for the PS3 -as- PES08 in PS3 was extremely disappointing.
Maybe Konami will introduce a couple of the gameplay-features of the Wii versions -into- the PS3 versions.
@ nikicampfag….u spend too much time online
@Matt - Great piece on the Wii mate. Hopefully that toss pot dougiedonut learns from your comments. Thanks for putting valued points re: the Wii, i would not mind having a go on it, but with my level of co-ordination i think i would be rubbish, but all the same it should be great.
Got Wii, played PES, hated it, traded it, came home, turned on 360, put PES in, sat back on sofa, enjoyed!
Great post though Matt.
Ditto with Assache, I’m afraid. The Wii game is absolutely shokcing. The reason why you can’t find anyone to play online with is because it doesn’t work!! When I had the game I tried constantly to play online but to no avail.
As for the gameplay, yes its different and yes you can move players off the ball ‘designing’ runs but there are too many flaws. Stodgy player movements, shocking camera heights (only 2 variables) and don’t even get me started on trying to defend. Don’t get me wrong I played this game a lot and tried hard to like it, being a PES fan but it was kind of like moving porridge around in a bowl. Interesting for about 5mins but then not! (and no I don’t do that in my spare time!!!)
Well written personal view though! :)
@assache
LOL. What, no more argument about Rockstar games new franchise exclusively to PS3. Hahhahahahahha. Did you like your proof???
@Edgard
Yeah, that’s how you win an argument.
@ nikie
so u agree i won …. that settles it then
