Interfering With Play 29/07/08

Welcome to a slightly shorter Interfering With Play this week. Due to personal commitments, I am unable to spend too much time writing this week’s article, but have still given the same research levels as usual, just in a more condensed form. All being well, this column will be back to regular length next week, and with the news surrounding PES2009 starting to hot up, the next few articles will hopefully begin to answer a lot of questions.

Won’t Go Away

Last week, I made a big song and dance surrounding the rumours circling the Internet regarding PES2009. Since then, more have come to light, some of which have been made public, others which have only been passed on by word of mouth. However, I try to look at the facts, and this is the factual information we know so far. Konami will release Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 in the forth quarter of 2008, for PC, PS2, PS3, PSP and X Box 360. That is it. Whilst I do not deny some of these rumours may come from people in the know, and some may be the Stonecold truth, until a press release makes these official, I refuse to be sucked in, and urge readers to take everything they read regarding PES with a pinch of salt. Over the next month, especially by mid September, the news will be arriving on a daily basis, with screenshots and videos to back up information, and until that point, everything is up in the air.

Time Is Ticking

Interesting point here, and something that has lead to a genuine discussion with my mates. How long to you, as a PES gamer, play per match? Obviously the times settings run up in 5 minute blocks from 5 minutes to 30 minutes per half. This varies in over football titles by going up in 2-minute blocks, and games of the past even allowed for a 45-minute half option. Personally, I play 10 minutes in league or cup matches, with 15 minutes being reserved for games against mates or just friendly matches. But I am sure many of you will differ. Do you prefer having quick 5-minute games to experience the rush of a quick match, or a long 20-minute per half match to evolve your gaming experience? Do you find that playing different length matches increases the difficulty, or even makes the game more realistic? A huge criticism of the 90-minute matches on games was that the score would usually end up in double figures! Is there a way developers can get around this to create a full-length game that could end 1-1, perhaps by increasing the size of the pitch? Or would this be a feature that would bore you? Your input, as always, would be greatly appreciated.

Interfering With Play League: Contenders, Ready!

The IWP league is almost finalised, with no further applications being accepted. The 10 gamers who have been chosen to play in the league will receive e-mail in the next 48 hours or so, with further instructions. If you are not involved, I thank you greatly for your interest. I have limited the number to 10 gamers for a number of reasons, but hopefully, with a better online mode in the future, the league will be run on a much larger scale. Once again, I would like to thank all of those who have shown an interest in the IWP League, and to those that are chosen to take part, good luck!

Not In My Backyard

A comment was made a few weeks back that the Spanish league played much slower than the Premier League on PES, and following a bit of research, I can confirm to truth to the statement. Again, I open it up to the floor, how many of you find that playing different domestic leagues result in different styles of game play? Is there a formation and tactic that is universally successful? I personally find playing in the Champions League in the Master League easier than playing domestic league matches, as the style fits my team slightly better. Your comments and views are always welcome, and can be expressed in the usual way.

Calling All Artists

I put a comment out about six months ago seeing if anyone was interested in designing a logo for Interfering With Play. Despite getting a few decent replies, I decided against going for these designs and scrapped the idea. However, to coincide with the new era, PES2009, I am opening the floor up again to potential graphic designers, or people who just love messing around with Photoshop. If you are interested in designing a logo for this article, it needs to be 300×300 pixels and be in JPEG format. Ideally, it would feature the letters ‘IWP’ or the words ‘Interfering With Play’ and be unique and eye catching (no pink though!) All logos sent will be replied to, and if a design is chosen, full credit will be given to the designer. PESGaming.com gets 100,000’s of visitors on a monthly basis, and this is a great opportunity to have your work seen by all these people. More information is available on request, so feel free to contact me should you wish.

That’s your lot for this week. Slightly shorter, as promised, but hopefully featuring a few points that can provoke some discussion. As I said, those taking part in the IWP League will receive e-mail in the next day or so, with all you need to know. If you wish to design a logo, or just to get in contact, the e-mail address, as always is danbolas@hotmail.com please include Logo in the subject title, if you are sending a logo. Comments as always are welcomed.

Thanks for Reading

RE: IWP LEAGUE - Dan to say you have really been unfair and disapointing in this matter is totally 100% the truth. I sent an email right at the beginning when you first mentioned it. No reply has ever been send by you, and please don’t try and lie that you have replied. God only knows how you would pick the 10. Is it on who you know???? Race???? someone being nicer???? someone being from the west midlands (wolverhampton)???

Im very amazed on the way you seem to treat people, especially when the league was never your idea in the first place. I enjoy your column and always read it but it would be nicer if you can explain your “selection process” oh yeah before you ask i do own a ps3. I bet your one of the players in the league???

Will you explain yourself sooner??? or will you kop out and put it in your column.

  3. Mark Says:

To the person point 2 - Valid point, bet Dan does not reply he’ll get away with it on his weekly rumour mill

  4. Dan Bolas Says:

    Hey there, anoymous.
Unfortunatly coz u haven;t left your name, i don;t know exactly who you are. I honestly have replied to every single person who sent me an e-mail, so there is no reason why you should not have got one.

I am personally not playing in the league at all. I am running it and the only way to do taht is be neutral. I have people from all over England, Northern Ireland and Europe involved in the league, and although i have not asked anyones race (quite low brow that someone would consider that a pre-requisit for joing the league) judging by names, i am guessing that there are a number of different races involved.

My only gripe must be that i did not receive your e-mail, as i am sure many people will validate the fact that i have in fact e-mailed everyone.

The league was chosen based on speed of reply, and couled with number of disconnected games to ensure that the league runs as smoothly as possible. I save every single e-mail i receive, and therefore am 100% sure i have replied to every PS3 gamer that has showed an interest in the league

Please e-mail me on danbolas@hotmail.com if you wish to discuss this further.

  5. Amateur Says:

I think that when someone releases a proper Football Sim, that is a Football game with depth and substance in every aspect; Attacking, Defending, Passing, Dribbling, Finishing, etc, etc..

When such a game is released -then- my choice would be to play 45 minutes per-half. And again I repeat, that would be when the 1st properly Football Sim is released.

Just imagine it, playing Online “1 vs 1″ -or- “5 vs 5″ for 90 Minutes.. I think that would be awesome. But of course this is not possible in ACTUALITY, because it would probably end with ridiculous scores such as 15-10.

However, when the time comes (eventually), that will be way to play the game; 20 minutes per-half, or the complete 45 minutes.

  6. Anonymous Says:

    Dan,
Fair enough mate. Understood. But i honestly did not get an email.

Anyway, thanks for replying, and putting your valid points forward.

    Thanks Dan.

  7. assache Says:

    Ever wonder why you bother?

  8. bonyi Says:

personally I prefer the 15 minutes (2 half together) games in Pes. Any shorter (5-10 min) are too short to develop real dynamic of the beautiful game.

  9. alex Says:

I usually play 15 minutes (in pes 08 the time limit is for the combined two halves, so each half is 7.50), but I’m about to start my 6th season with spurs so have put it down to 10 minutes, I find there’s a big difference with 10 and 15 minute games, in 10 minutes for me it’s all about attack but with 15 minutes I build up the passes, the attack, so I end up with some realistic goals. I play international matches (friendlies) at 30 minutes because I enjoy talent scouting and so need time to get to know the players.

I remember one match, portsmouth v reading in the premier league being 7-4, but results like these are really rare, I think in order to make the scores more realistic the whole engine needs to me more manual, with gauges for everything from passes to ball control, but then it could become too tedious and not as fun.

As for gameplay styles, all I can say is that I can easily win against Barcelona, but Chelsea always prove a challenge.

  10. Simon McDermott Says:

I find 10 mins for all match’s is long enough.
Most match’s i score more than 3 goals so I see this as a long enough time frame.
5 mins is far to short even when playing against your mates.

  11. Jasperinho Says:

I also play 10 minutes per match in general and sometimes 15 when playing against mates. I agree with Simon McDermott than 5 minutes is just too short: one goal usually decides the match already.

I will be interested in following the IWP league standings. It would be great if this league would grow out to become some sort of Pesgaming league, where regular visitors will compete against each other for gold

  12. ahmed a. Says:

i prefer to play a 20 minutes match, however with PES2008 you get a lot of goals in that time frame, which shows clearly how the game engine works. but i’m not playing it anymore, i’m actually playing either PES6 or PES4 these days (thank god i have them to play with instead of the awful PES2008) until we see how PES2009 is going to be.

  13. slick Says:

ok am sick of pro evo since they dont want to listen to their fans we dont want any of their product any more. fifa listen 2 their fans that why their game improves every year. but this pro makers believe they can just put anything out and will bye for €70 bull **** when they start making quality football game more team real league not master league then we will bye for now they can swallow all their football game

  14. Chaser Says:

SLICK get a life my friend. FIFA is still miles behind in relation to Pro Evo. I playyed Fifa (not out of choice) yesterday, and it was rubbish. The game play was rather unrealistic.

  15. PANKY Says:

I agree with chaser, FIFA does still suck monkey balls, but pro evo online is awful. It is the worst online experience i have had and I’ve had a few ;). I won’t be pre-odering it for the first time since the original. Anyways - 10mins a game is perfect.

  16. Anonymous Says:

    has any1 been sent an email bout the ps3 league…i hope i get 1 so i can beat every1 i play!! if i dnt get 1 2day i hope i get a email 2morrow!

  17. ahmed a. Says:

    i agree with Chaser

  18. Anonymous Says:

10 minutes matches is the way to go, sometimes 5 minutes when there are like 10 of my friends…

  19. PacMan Says:

I can play well in fast games and I can play well in slow games, but I definitely prefer the latter. Therefore, my ML games are set to 15 minutes per half. That way I can do what I do best: score one or two in the first minutes and then lay back, step off the gas, set mentality to semi-defensive and start creating beautiful plays.

PES 2008 makes this impossible though, so I’m sticking with PES 6. I usually control mediocre sides (my ML team is average), and 2008 just doesn’t allow to you to totally dominate a match with a mediocre team against a powerful side (single player). Some Kaká is bound to slam past your defense and score at least once per game. However great my defensive skills are in PES 6, they are just useless in PES 2008. The only way in this year’s game is playing strong and playing fast, all the time. I’ve had success in 2008 with that mindset, but it gets terribly old after a number of matches…

  20. Amateur Says:

Completely agree with PacMan.. good games stand the test of Time -and- PES 2008 gets old after 3 hours of playing it.

This is what happens when a game is as boring as PES08, always at a high Pace, always straight-forward, always arcadish and predictable.. that’s NOT what Football is about.

  21. betisfan Says:

but surely pacman pes 2008 mirrors real football if it prevents you from dominating a game with a mediocre side against a powerful side? thats why powerful sides win more often than they lose in real football, because they tend to dominate games against lesser opposition!

  22. ath007 Says:

    yea… me too with PacMan.

Pes2008 always had this problem. Its always the pace.. power… unless u have powerful players with great body balances and speed, u r sure to lose the game, formations never matter, everything performs the same…its something like that… and i always regret pulling opponents down in the 35 yard area around my box… however lousy the freekick taker is, he is bound to send a ‘Juninho’ into the net… i hate when that happens… so when i feel like killing myself on Pes2008, i find Pes2006 a bliss…a life saver…

i play on 10 mins and against friends, 15.

some how it just doesnt excite me now that 2009 is on its way… just doesnt…maybe then i will continue playing PES6 onto a fourth year… LOL !!!

  23. mn9ajas Says:

I’ve been getting pretty bored of PES08 of late and so decided to change the camera angle to see if it changed the way in which the game played. I’ve always been a traditional default camera angle person and have shyed away from the wide view on the old versions due to the speed drop, however, to my surprise the wide view this year plays at the same speed and provides a completely different experience!! I think I will now be a wide angle convert!!

  24. Thugzmaster Says:

    Hi Fellow PESers
“WE”, and I mean me and my family , my mates , their families…ect, absolutely LOVE Pro Evo 08. The gameplay, graphics and slick moves are some of the attributes we just cant get enough of. I’ll pick pro evo over fifa anyday. We play tournament after tournament after tournament and so on and so forth and the “crowd” is getting bigger and bigger. BUT, and a very BIG “BUT” that is , the gametimes is a big big let down. Let me give you the lowdown folks……..
5 Mins is actally 4.5 mins give or take a minute or two.
    10 mins = 8 mins+
    15 mins = 13 mins+
    20 mins = 17.5 mins+
    25 mins = 21 mins+
    30 mins = 25 mins+
Okay so we dont get a 45 min half (Which in all honesty konami should consider ditching the 5 mins and replacing it with a 45 mins gamehalf…:-)) I believe if a game says 10 mins it should mean 10 mins no more no less, and the same should apply to the rest of the gametimes. Whats the point in giving us a 30 min option when in actual fact we dont get to play for that length ? despite liking the game so much I’m not looking forward to Pro Evo 09 no matter how good it will be, its gonna be the same and I just dont think gamers should be cheated out of a beautiful game. All in all, in my humble opinion I believe we as hardcore gamers should be given a 10 min minimum to a 45 min max gamehalf in realtime,No More No Less………:-)
