Interfering With Play - 25th August 2008

IWP Logo 1Welcome to this week’s Interfering With Play. The news from the PES world is starting to steam roller, to coincide with the pace picking up in the domestic football season. There is no denying that in this respect, Konami and EA Sports have their release timing spot on. Unlike other gaming franchises, which tend to release slightly closer to major holidays, the October releases show that both PES and Fifa have a decent marketing concept, something that has definitely improved over the years. Yes excitement levels are beginning to rise, but in some cases, so to is naivety, especially among a large section of the PES public. Lets get rolling with this week’s Interfering With Play.

“Have I Told You How Good, It Feels To Be Me”

For those of you unfamiliar with my gaming situation, I would consider myself a borderline addict. I own a lot of games, some that are still yet to be played, and am a stickler for completing games before moving on to the next one. Some people would call it an addiction, which is of course totally your opinion. I have a very physically based job, am outside a lot of the time, and have a great deal of social commitments, so when I have free time, I do like to sit in front of the PS3, or PC and play some top quality entertainment. I also like reading and finding out about the industry, and am starting to understand developer talk. For example, a developer saying, ‘We don’t feel it is the right time to release the game into the market’ usually means ‘a similar title is coming out that is better than ours, and we won’t be able to compete!’

Unfortunately, Konami has dropped the ball with its press release the other day. ‘We’ve stopped worrying about what FIFA’s doing and started concentrating on what PES does best’ was a comment made by the Konami press officer a few weeks ago, and for me alarm bells immediately went off. When ISS and PES began, they could not care less what Fifa was doing, and as a result the game started to build up in its own right. Features such as unique player appearances, different free kick styles and even more control over which foot your player struck the ball with, were all huge, unique selling points of ISS Pro Evolution Soccer in the late 90’s, and they were things that it took FIFA along time to catch up on. Indeed, features such as an in-game shop, featuring unlockable items were first brought in on the Konami franchise, only for EA Sports to follow suit. The main factor that stopped PES being purchased by the ‘casual’ footballer gamer was the lack of official kits and names, something that in the last 5 years, Konami have done very little to rectify.

This year’s offering gives us more similarities than ever with FIFA, and makes me begin to wonder. Features such as Be A Legend, whilst I am sure will be enjoyable, are virtually a copy of FIFA’s Be A Pro mode, and the fact Konami have snapped up a couple of strange licenses implies that more than ever, they are trying to play catch up. Those who visit at regular intervals will know that not only have Konami lost the Spanish La Liga license (and with it the rights for official team strips and badges) but they have gained the license for Wembley, which featured on last years FIFA, and for Liverpool football club, which means that in spite of having the official license, they will be unable to display an actual sponsor due to it being alcohol!

I am as big a PES fan as you will come across, but I am also a realist. There are some very exciting new features in PES 2009, but in true Konami style, they have already dropped the ball on a number of occasions. Instead of trying to play catch up with the EA Sports, they should just keep their mouths shut, and let their game, which is still the best footballing franchise in the world, do the talking.

“I Don’t Belong Here”

Resorting back to PES 2008 now, and as with many of you, I am still playing it as much as the first week I brought it. It spends as much, if not more time in the PS3 as Metal Gear Solid 4 and Grand Theft Auto IV, which give you an idea of how highly it is regarded amongst my mates and myself. However, I have another exceptional grumble about penalty kicks, something that I am sure many of you will have experienced. In a recent Konami cup game against Torino, the game went to a penalty shoot out, which is part and parcel of a cup competition. As Middlesbrough, I chose 5 players with decent shooting and accuracy, Downing, Mido, Arca, Alves and Tuncay. Downing has scored each penalty he has taken during normal time, and Mido was top scorer with 6 goals in 3 games. I saved the first Torino penalty, guessing the right way, and then scored my first, again with Downing. The second Torino penalty hit the post, and I felt I was well on my way to a victory. How very wrong I was! My next four Penalties all went wide, no matter where in the goal I aimed the shot. Torino scored their last three, one with me even going the right way! I appreciate that a Penalty shoot out is a lottery in real life, but once again, must stress that when you have no control over event, it is hardly a level playing field. I stress again, that different types of penalties, such as chip, power and placement should be included as options, which each having their own strengths and weaknesses as appropriate. I open this up to the PESGaming.com community, and ask for your experiences on the subject.

“I Saw The Sign”

I do take time to read other peoples columns on PESGaming.com, as like myself, they do produce some very valid points. The results of last week’s poll showed that people did not really like the ‘different’ style offered by Steve From Stoke, and that Interfering With Play proved the least likely to fold, albeit because of a history of week in, week out postings. However, with these comments comes proof that PESGaming.com has received a great deal of ‘new’ visitors, and people who may not know the full story, especially regarding the subject on a Konami petition.

Firstly, any kind of petition to influence PES 2009 would have to have been sent around 6 months ago, when the game first went into development. At this stage, PES 2009 is around 75% complete, which means the majority of the coding is done and dusted. What will be happening now is Konami’s play testing department will be checking for bugs and errors in the code, which will be ‘hopefully’ removed before the game hits our shops. Features such as game modes, teams and graphics are done and dusted, and any petition now would have to look into PES 2010, and would be unrealistic, seeing as the 2009 version is not available yet!

Secondly, and probably the reason for the first point, is the fact that how I know so many new visitors have joined this site. In January and February, Interfering With Play led a campaign entitled ‘Seabass Letter’. Over the two months, I wrote a paragraph about each of the six key areas of the game, Presentation, Game Play, Graphics, Edit & Sound, Features And Game Modes and Online. Each week, the community either added to the points, or said some were not as important. Of course, as Francis said, this resulted in a conflict of opinions, but over the course of seven weeks, it left us with a letter outlining the views of the PESGaming.com community.

The letter was made public on this site, before being sent to various departments within Konami and to Seabass himself. It was sent on the 29th February 2009, and to this day, neither myself, nor PESGaming.com have received any response or acknowledgement for our efforts or contributions. No matter how you stack the numbers, and believe me, hundreds of thousands of unique visitors come through the PESGaming.com doors every month, Konami simply was not interested in hearing the views of one of the largest PES online communities. Who knows, they may have taken some of the points into account, only time will tell. I do intend, upon PES’ release to look back at the points made in the letter, and see exactly how many cross-references to the end product. But as far as a petition goes, I am afraid, like myself, anyone who spends the time producing it is just going to have their work falling on deaf ears.

‘Its Coming Home’

Just a quick point regarding the English national team, a subject that could have an entire column dedicated to it. Am I missing something, or has Capello actually made this side good backwards. An established, successful club manager is something that, bar Sven, England hasn’t had since Bobby Robson, and now we have one, we seem to be doing worse. I know we get many foreign visitors on this site, and even if your from other parts of the UK, I would love you input on how the English national side is reflected worldwide. I am sure most teams would love to have a Gerrard or a Rooney in them, but is it a case of too many big egos? Or is it because they have so used to playing with foreigners in their club teams that have a better understanding of the game technically? Your views, as always are greatly appreciated.

‘If We Catch A Criminal’

Another quick point, and it is something I will stress again before PES 2009 comes out. PES brings a great community together. In the past this included sharing option files or edit codes, hopefully something that will occur again in this version. However, there is on scam that is currently being worked that some of you may not be aware. When playing PES online, unlike many other games, you are required to log into Konami’s server and not just use X Box Live or the PSN, as I am sure many of you are aware. There are some people out there who will claim to have ‘lost’ their activation code and are unable to access the online section, requesting they ‘borrow’ yours. Of course, this is a huge scam. Normally these individuals have pirate versions of the game, and because of this, are unable to play online. This damages both genuine gamers and the companies that develop the game, and I would like to warn you about this problem. Do not give your online PES details to anyone, as it will 99% be a scam, and you will end up in hot water if Konami investigate the situation!

‘And I Wonder If You Know’

Finally this week’s poll. Konami have a reputation for removing aspects of PES games that in the past have been successful. This includes things such as the PES shop, the ability to mix and match home and away shirts and shorts and the simple ability to play a penalty shoot out with mates. Couple this with features such as poor edit mode in previous next generation offerings, and you can be pretty sure something will be missing from PES 2009 that was a key feature in PES2008. This poll is your opportunity to guess what it will be. Obviously, preannounced features such as Diving, which is in, or La Liga, which is out, are not included in the poll! Anything you think I have missed can be added in the comments section below.

Which Of These Will Be Left Out Of PES 2009?

I get about 20-50 mails a week, and therefore cannot reply to everyone, I will do my best to answer your question either personally, or if not in next week’s column. Dave Ostrander is the man responsible for the logo at the top of this article, many thanks to him for his excellent design work. And finally, the IWP League is drawing to its final stages next week, more news in next week’s article.

OH and another point i think pes looks better graphically than fifa especially on a replay when its close up in fifa they dont realli look like the players i.e rooney looks like hagrid fae harry potter !!! PES FOREVER

  3. Sonicraig Says:

They wont be having the lfc kit including the sponsor? wtf is that all about im sure fifa show beer companys on their licensed teams !

  4. passthedutchie Says:

Carlsberg……… We don’t make football games, but, if we did!

  5. Billy Says:

Im an aussie and i think most of us down here think your english national team is a disgrace. Bunch of spoilt overpaid attention-seeking brats. You have the best dam league in the world and have the money to buy the best coach and train at the best facilities and yet you still fail and bitch about it. Compare this to australia, a bunch of relative no names whom most are from lower tier european clubs(our best player is cronically-injured harry kewell! lol) and while we may not play the most attractive wonderful football we play with passion and pride at wearing the green and gold. A direct comparison would be the 2006 world cup where we had to draw with crotia in our last group game to get through to the second round (for the first time in australia history) and we did it because we fought til the end and managed a hard earned but muchly deserved draw and then took italy all the way in the last 16. look at the rubbish you produced when you had to draw with croatia to get through to euro 08. i think capello is good manager and with abit of time he’ll be able to mold and shape your english team so you might do alright at the 2010 world cup.

  6. CROFREAK Says:

Since i am from Croatia( proud to say)this is my wiew on English national team. I am watching them very closely because we are in the same group for World cup( again ;-) )
So how you say it looks like they are still trying to find themselves and not responding to good to a new coach. I think a coach for a England national team should be from England …dont say that you dont have a good one . Being a good coach at club does not mean that he is gone be that good in international waters. To many stars in one team is never a good thing (remember REAL Madrid)…they simply dont play as a team that is one of the biggest problems. And i think they are missing the feeling of joy and proud in their games. That is a job for a coach … an Italian in your case…see what i am geting at!!!?

  7. passthedutchie Says:

    Crofreak

    Spot on.

  8. Thom Says:

    Sweden calling ;)

I think that the English national team suffers with one big problem, and that’s the fact that they still holds themself as the best team in the world. The feeling of - “Where England, we can’t loose this” is way to often present and that destroys much for the team. You can see the same thing with club-teams that plays below their potential. Take Newcastle in Premier League last year for instance. They where never prepared too fight in the bottom of the table so when that situation appeared the team sort of “backfired”.

“Where Newcastle, we will make this, we are so much better then the other ones down here, we shouldnät even be here…”

Sort of the same deal with England. I get the feeling that you are so proud and obsessed about being the Football “Mekka” that you don’t understand the reality. You don’t have the best team in the world, you can’t just walk trough the qualifying for the World Cup or the European Championship, your team is not that good.

    P.S.
I also think England should start with another formation then they are. You guys have a lot of talented young players, wy don’t give the a chance? I won’t to see Agbonlahor, Lennon and other young players more. I don’t want to see Heskey in you national team (seriously, wtf?!) and i don’t want to se Gerard on the left wing. Hargo and Gerrard in the middle, Joe Cole and Lennon on the wings and Rooney with Dean Ashton/Agbonlahor on the top.

Sorry for eventual miss-spelling, English is not my strongest subject.

  9. Joe Says:

“Features such as Be A Legend, whilst I am sure will be enjoyable, are virtually a copy of FIFA’s Be A Pro mode,”

I thought konami thought of it first with their Japanese versions??

  10. Jasperinho Says:

I think that the English national team suffers with the big problem that the Premier League is so strong and successful.

There’s so much money in the Premier League that the clubs can afford to buy expensive foreign key players from all over the world and that even positions like SB’s and GK’s are taken by foreigners.

This has brought the level of the Premier League to the highest level in the world at the moment, but for the English national team this is a bad thing as talents don’t develop anymore..

Teams like Arsenal a wonderful to see because of their offensive play, but they are better for the French national team than for the English one..

  11. Chrisze Says:

this might sound naive but what are LED boards.

o and does any1 know if untucked shirts is in the game,i didnt play last years much and i’m not sure if it was in the game. but i think it needs 2 b in the game becus most players players today dont tuck there shirt in.

i saw the ronaldo free kick vid and he’s shirt was tucked. i would b extremely pissed if konami took it off.

  12. pesFannnn Says:

Another great post… Good job mate… :) but i would like to comment a little on the logo as i felt it lacked a bit of originality… i suppose everyone knew where the idea was taken from…

Anyway anyone have any idea to prolong my experience with the frustrating pes2008? i would like to continue playing it but i have a feeling of just discarding it…

  13. Steve From Stoke Says:

Yeah……cheers for that Dan. Didn’t make me feel like **** at all.

  14. Steve Says:

The problem with the England team is that, rather than playing a team with the best players for each position, they always try and cram all of the stars into one team.
Why did Gerrard play on the left against the czechs? We have reasonable left sided players (Joe Cole, Stewart Downing), who may not be as good a footballer as Gerrard, but are far better at playing their position than he is.

We also need to look at the fact that Gerrard and Lampard both play the same game, obviously this has been covered time after time, but shouldn’t we be pleased to have such quality on the bench for the key position that they play? One of them should be on the bench, end of.

Beckham has been a fantastic asset to the England team over the years, and he is still a fantastic crosser of the ball, and dead ball specialist, however shouldn’t we be trying to get goals from other areas, rather than relying on getting x number of free kicks or corners? We need to employ a quicker, more all-round player to fill his boots, a likely option being David Bentley.

Rooney is not an out and out striker. He should be played as a roaming striker, playing off the main striker, and encouraged not to spend too much time chasing back and therefore taking himself out of the attacking game.

I can’t pretend to be a football managing expert, but I think these are a few of the key factors relating to the England team’s failings. We have changed managers numerous times, but always play the same way, what is the use of changing manager if the next one only has the same ideas as the previous one.

My ideal England squad would be

    James

    Brown Ferdinand Terry Cole

    Bentley Hargreaves Downing

    Rooney Gerrard

    Owen

    Subs:
    Green
    Neville
    A. Ferdinand
    Lampard
    J. Cole
    Agbonlahor

    Anyway, just my opinion, discuss……
    Owen

  15. 2OLEgend Says:

@’Chrisze’ - LED boards are the electronic advertising boards that go around the pitch.

And @ Joe - You are right. Konami did use their ‘Become a Legend’ feature in a Japanese version before Fifa copied with ‘Be a Pro’.
That really annoys me when people start talking about Konami copying Fifa when 9 times out of 10 it’s the other way round!

However, I would be glad to see Konami copy Fifa with the penaties. You are spot on in saying that they need to add more shooting types with regards to penalties.

As for the La Liga, sure it wont be called ‘La Liga’ but I’m pretty sure it is going to have the offial team names and kits.

  16. Chrisze Says:

cheers for the info but looking at the video’s the boards seem the same. the same red konami board.

and when does the info on the EDIT MODE get realeased in the magazine im nt sure what mag it was. but it was mean t 2 b soon i believe.

i jus feel that the EDIT MODE needs to top gear again.

  17. Trystan davies Says:

Dan Bolas, you misunderstand things, the petition idea was never intended to influence this years game, which we all know is out in a few months you donkey. Its for future iterations of pro evo, which you must know is an annual franchise. As soon as PES 2009 is done, work begins on PES 2010, its a constantly ongoing project. Not that Konami have ever listened to fans in the past, but its a good idea never-the-less.

  18. Sambodini Says:

Poor knowledge from you there Dan. As already pointed out by “Joe” on point 9 above, the be a legend mode was in the japanese winning eleven titles (named fantasista I think) way before it was in FIFA which means FIFA copied PES.

I disagree with your comment “This year’s offering gives us more similarities than ever with FIFA”. FIFA have always copied PES from year to year (which is why it’s getting better). Examples of this are when FIFA started using R1 instead of triangle to run (because using triangle was stupid)and how fifa changed the selected player to having an icon above their head instead of a colour surrounding them underfoot. Also I’ve heard that the Spanish clubs teams in PES 2009 might very well have fully licenced kits and player names but the league name might be wrong (big deal). Even if they aren’t licenced it’ll be a matter of days before option files are created rectifying this (due to the new expansive edit mode). Also I really hope that the rumour of Liverpool not having Carslberg as a sponsor is fake. And I’m also hoping Champions League licence for PES 2009 will be announced in PSM3 on 28th August. I personally don’t see any reason why Konami should worry about FIFA because in my opinion, PES will always be streets ahead due to the gameplay.

  19. dm86 Says:

Well I feel pretty p*ssed after that. No real kits or names for Spanish clubs. Liverpool not having Carlsberg sponsor on shirt!! I don’t understand why, cos in FIFA it is present, so why can’t it be in PES?

I am just gettin fed up of all these bull**** rumours goin around at the moment. need something concrete to come out.

  20. nikicampos Says:

    @ Sambodini.

WTH dude, LOL, you just post exactly what i was about to say, you wouldn’t believe how exactly the same was, but thanks anyway.

You have no idea how much bothers me that people think that Be a Pro was Fifa’s idea, come on, Fifa has no imagination, every good aspect of the game that they have, i they have any, is only a copy of PES.

Anyway, about the penalties, how hard could it be to Konami to just put the power meter like when you sooht in a game.

  21. Chrisze Says:

and when does the info on the EDIT MODE get realeased in the magazine im nt sure what mag it was. but it was meant 2 b soon i believe.

  25. 2OLEgend Says:

    @ Chrisze

The info on edit mode is out in 2 days the 28th. It’s going to be back to its best like it used to be on the ps2. You can even upoad real chants into the game for each team. Anything else you need to know? lol

  26. Chrisze Says:

cheers for the info “2 0LE GEND” ive been asking this for ages .but im extrememly scared Konami are going too mess us abwt and give us that lackluster edit mode from last year. im sorry but i dont trust them. can i ask how u know that the edit mode is back tos tandard becasue i havent seen a pic with 1 player with he’s shirt untucked. which is worrying as many players today wear untucked shirts

  27. 2OLEgend Says:

I’m not sure where i read that its back to normal but there are a few site saying that it will be. I also saw the interview with Seabass and he talks about some of the improvements in the edit mode. I love the idea of adding real chants. All will be revealed soon anyways.

  28. nikicampos Says:

    @ Chirsze.

The Edit mode will be great, so many site know that, they just can’t say anything because of the embargo on the edit mode, you will be able to edit badges, logos, etc. PSM3 has the exclusive, hopefully the 28th they will talk about it.

And for the untucked shirts, PES 2008 had them, you were not able to edit them, but there were a few players with untucked shirts, so cheer up, it’s not the end of the world if you can’t edit the untucked shirts.

  29. john mcgrady Says:

liverpool wont have carlsberg cos celtic and rangers dont have carling now. bit **** but what can ya do?

  30. Ebby Says:

btw be a pro mode was a copy of konami’s fantasista mode from their J-league versions of winning eleven….konami did not publicise this mode, dats why ea took d opportunity n called it Be a Pro…Just 2 let u know konami’s be a legend or fantasista mode is way better than be a pro on fifa…i know pes2010 will be dat next-gen game we’ve all been waiting for

  31. Interzone11 Says:

    Regarding the England national team,

Steven Gerard and Frank Lampard are good players, do they make players around them better though? I am unsure. Do they buy into the team concept, which is what the national teams must be? Once again I am unsure. Joe Cole, would fit into any national teams plans though. Also Theo Walcott and his speed opens up the game. Look at the importance of speed within the Euro 08 this year. In the US we look at the English national team as an often-underachieving squad. There are many teams despite our match record which we desire to play less than you. Spain, Italy, Portugal, Germany, Holland, & France. I know your boys are still way ahead of ours, but, why don’t your managers select the best team? Not the best players. Here’s to hoping to the best for both of our countries representatives.

  32. t23d Says:

‘….lost the Spanish La Liga license (and with it the rights for official team strips and badges)……’

are you sure about this??? Everyone says that only the name “La Liga” will be changed

  33. t23d Says:

    @ Jasperinho:

yes …i agree with you…just look at Chelsea or Liverpool….look the proportion between english players and foreigners

  34. Sam Grace Says:

Hi, I’m from Australia and I am just commenting on your article regarding the England national team. I think it’s a matter of gelling. There are so many big-name players in the squad that all like to play their own style of individual football. They just can’t gel. They all play differently and players like Rooney aren’t going to change that for anyone. A star team will beat a team of stars any day.

  35. Mr.A Says:

Yeh,England need to find players who are better suited to their respective positions i mean why is gerrard out on the flank, they need to stop cramming the best players in and ruining the team as they’re all out of position. Just find the best players in each position and then they’ll have a team that can gel, even if its not as star-studded as it is now.
My ideal England team would be
KIRKLAND (Reliable as hell never gets any attention though)
    BROWN
FERDINAND (I think deserves to be captain)
    TERRY
    ASHLEY COLE
BENTLEY (Beckham is still good, but england need some pace here)
CARRICK (He’s one of the best passers in the game)
GERRARD (The heart of the team on his day)
    J.COLE
ROONEY (Needs to play off Crouch)
CROUCH (He’s got a good international record for goals, but sometimes he’s overlooked)

  36. stu Says:

i think england need to look to the future and get some young guys in there, it doesn’t work with all those big egos as they don’t care, most of them would retire from international football once they are dropped which shows how much they really care playing, just like scholes and carragher.

    hart

    richards ferdinand terry baines

wright phillips michael johnson ashley young

    gerrard

    danny sturridge rooney

now that is an exciting team with flair and passion

  37. Hasse Says:

    Hi
since you seem to know quite much about pes 09 can you answer (or find the answer) to this question:
    - Will you be able to take control of CPU-teams when playing a league. This was removed for pes 08 and when playing with a friend we couldn´t just choose one team each - we had to play EVERY single game.

I im playing as Liverpool and i face Portsmouth (CPU team) during the season my mate can´t take control of that team

    THANKS

  39. Dan Bolas Says:

I very rarely reply to my own post. Just a quick point.

I am fully aware of Fantasia mode from Winning Eleven Club Championship 2007. This game was released in August 2007, 2 months before both Fifa 2008 and PES2008 were released in the UK.

I am also fully aware that ISS 2000 featured a virtually identical game mode on the N64, which played out as a Sims meets ISS game. All of these games follow the premise of 90’s title, Libero Grande, a game in which you only controlled one player. This was followed up by Libero Grande: International, but due to the premise being very thin on its own (controlling one player) that game was poorly received by Western Audiences.

My point regarding copying is very simple. If Konami were so confident about this game mode, why didn;t they include it in any version of Pro Evolution Soccer for the Western release. Even a PSP or PS2 mode would have alot shown confidence in the product. They have waited unil FIFA tried and tested the method before bringing over to a Western audience, because if it had failed on FIFA, they wouldn;t have looked bad.

I fully agree Konami came up with the idea first, but in terms of a Western market, they copied FIFA, making sure it was a success before releasing it, and for me, that is a company that is scared to make an onnovative decision.

  40. Rossco Mcqueen Says:

i can’t believe so many pro evo fans are defecting to fifa after watching the two videos of the gameplay for both pes and fifa on http://www.gamersyde.com/news_7031_en.html (PS3 IS THE BEST!! left the link above nice on mate)
the forum underneath the videos is all about fifa and how better the gameplay is and how much more realistic. What a load of bull****. its like someone slagging off your footy team. might just go back in and stand up for the pro evo cause!

    Re Dan@39

Totally agree with your point Dan. Too many people are too quick to jump on every single word. (Take this post for example - I’m sure i’ll get some comments)

Konami definitely waited to see if the mode was successful in Fifa before releasing it in PES09.

Only negative thing to say about IWP this week is your comment about Steve from Stoke’s column. Sure the results came back negative but Steve don’t let that put you off writing again. It was only your first post and so people will take a while to get used to it. Heck I admit I had to read it 3x before I got the jist of it but there were definitely things in there that I saw in my own passion for Pro Evo.

Both keep up the good work! :)

Dan Bolas is a numpty!! none of your posts make any sense mate, they’re poorly written, waffly, contradictory, not to mention the terrible spelling and grammar… oh well, at least your a pro evo fan so we’ll let you off ;)

  43. Rooney Says:

England’s problem is not egotistical players, nor is it that they have too many good players… which I hope you can understand is a complete oxymoron. You should hope for the sake of your country, whichever it is, that when it comes to the national team; you better have too many good players.

With Steve Mclaren at the helm, the problem was direction and leadership. After Beckham’s resignation in 2006, the captaincy honours were put in doubt from the get go and since then it has been a tussle for direction on the field. Mclaren should’ve given the team some leadership and confidence. England have been incapable finishers in the Euro qualifiers. Rooney has evolved (or devolved, depending on how you look at it) as a player, thanks in part to Christiano Ronaldo taking over primary striking duties over in Manchester. Rooney is not the striker he was, he’s become this sort of mellow-complete-team-footballer-chap. This is great for United, not so for England. You can not count on Owen and Crouch to lead you to Glory.

There was also a problem with the players respecting Steve Mclaren, because to be honest he is not much of a manager. Certainly not one that can reign in a powerful beast that is the overly talented England team sheet. Fabio Capello is one such gentleman who can. He put the team through a bit of a slumber in his first few matches, but thats okay… he can fiddle with his men (no pun intended) now and not next year when the WC qualifiers are in full force. He took his time choosing a captain, but he chose wisely and firmly with Terry. He is the kind of man you want to give a loudspeaker to out there.

From this point tactically, Capello has much to sort out. But with the plethora of talent available to him, expect England and the world to expect the world from him. He will do wisely to keep his senior talents; Beckham and Lampard inclusive. And likewise he will probably look to develop Walcott, Defoe and Dean Ashton. Rooney and Owen may or may not play their parts. With a central midfield the like of Barry, Carrick and Gerrard… solid men on the flanks… Joe Cole and Downing… Monsters like Terry and Ferdinand at the gates. With all this horsepower and engineering under the hood and Capello at the wheel, how can you not be the world champions?

@ Dan great read once again. Well done mate. Don’t listen to fools that don’t understand a good read even if it kicks them in the teeth.

To be perfectly honest i enjoyed reading steve from stoke’s post it reminds me of what i can be like at times. for example when im having a ****ty day at work i just think another 2 hours and i’ll be playin barcelona in the cup on master league and a few more games after that and it transfer time! it makes you forget about how long u have left at work.

i do enjoy dan’s articles too just wish they were both posting twice a week. wink! wink! nudge! nudge!

  48. t23d Says:

    @RoscoMcQueen

yeah, i watched both videos, i can proudly say i like PES better, even tho i didnt see any goals. Whatsup with that un realistic lightning effect on the pitch in FIFA09? Its supossed to be night time, so why do i see dark spots in the pitch? The players run like robots..i dunno…The cutscenes do look great on FIFA,,,but hell,,,i liked the gameplay on PES way better

  49. oo Says:

u talk to much mate…cut em down and jus talk about the game more…i think ur up urself too much, just my opinion tho

  57. Sambodini Says:

Sorry Dan mate but I ain’t falling for that one. Your article clearly shows you thought Be a Legend was a copy of Be a pro on FIFA. “Features such as Be A Legend, whilst I am sure will be enjoyable, are virtually a copy of FIFA’s Be A Pro mode”. No mention of Konami not having the bottle to release it on PES in Europe. That was a good effort in covering up your mistake there Dan (number 39) but it’s easy to do some research on it once the mistake has already been made. I’d have preferred it if you admitted your error.

I agree with quite a few comments above about penalties on PES. I really wish they used a power bar because there is absolutely no skill involved in scoring one. Complete pot luck.
