IWP League Champion 2008: Martin Ginnelly (River Plate)

Welcome to this week’s Interfering With Play. I would like to take the opportunity to say a quick thank you to everyone who has voted for his or her Players Of The Season. Voting closes at 11pm on the 7th October, after which I will be going through the arduous task of counting up the votes. As I am sure many of you can see, by looking at comments, it is going to be close between 5 or 6 players for that top rating, so it should be interesting when all is said and done. This week has also seen Konami release its promotional copies of PES 2009 to magazines / websites for review. As we are not affiliated with Konami (a decision which means we can type pretty much whatever we want!) PESGaming.com has not received a promotional copy, but we will be the place to bring you all the latest news and reviews about the final product, which is due out in an exciting weeks time!

“Sugar, We’re Going Down Swinging”

There is no other topic that could lead this week’s IWP than that following the PES 2009 demo. As I have said before, I will not review a game based upon a demo, and this one is no exception. I have tried the demo on both PC and PS3, and am very impressed by what I have played. The graphics are exceptionally strong; the best on any PES game, and the game play has maintained some of the style of previous PES, whilst still evolving in a manor, which makes the game, feel fresh. In a similar light to the FIFA demo, one of my concerns is the way the ball floats when it is lofted through, but I am starting to think that this is the way the new balls must feel in real life, and that maybe by using older versions of the football, the physics may react as such. It is no secret that modern day footballs are lighter than ever, and I feel it is only right this should be interpreted within the gaming world. The fact that both games have the ball acting in this way makes me think it is intentional.

Other than that I have enjoyed playing the demo immensely. I have retired PES2008 now, and will stop playing the demo in a few days time, starving myself of football gaming for a few days before PES2009 is released. With FIFA 09 receiving rave reviews from all the major sites, the EA Sports PR machine is definitely in full spin, but I will not be purchasing the game, at least until the New Year. This is the point I was always arriving to.

FIFA 2009, as with every FIFA, will always receive the bulk of the publicity, whilst PES, each year does always seem to be swept under the carpet. I am pretty sure this is fine for most PES fans, whilst EA like their title to be all guns blazing, flashing lights and loud music, Konami would rather their game release quietly into the market and sell well throughout the year. This has slightly changed over the past few years, with TV adverts and match day advertising, but the same still applies. To me, as a writer on a site dedicated to PES, I couldn’t really care what the press are saying about the game. I couldn’t really care if FIFA sells millions more copies, and I honestly couldn’t care less if Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 doesn’t even make it to number one in the sales charts. It matters to me that when I sit down, and play the game, start a Master League or gives a mate a game, I enjoy the experience, and ever since I started playing ISS, which has always been the case.

The problem we have is that people want to enforce their views on the other half. I don’t care if people play FIFA. I personally find it the less realistic of the two series, but people are more than entitled to play it. There is no one who is going to convince me, by words, that FIFA is the better game. The only way I will change my opinion is by playing FIFA, and then playing PES, and then wanting to put FIFA back in. Over the past 12 years, that has never happened. Until it does, I will be a PES fan. So here is my request to all those die hard PES fans fighting for your game, just let the FIFA people talk the talk. Year after year, match after match, kick after kick, I am still convinced PES will walk the walk.

“I… Wanna Rock & Roll All Night”

I have said many, many times that I like my music. I am not one of these people who claims music is my life, nor am I even anywhere near decent on any musical instrument (I am not terrible on Bass), and I sing like a falling cat. But music can make the difference between a good moment and a great moment, and can make dull tasks easier to complete. The fact that PS3 has followed the excellent 360 feature of allowing music to be played in the background of games is a testament to how developers see music within the gaming industry, and PES 2009 allowing the ability to import music onto menu screens is a huge bonus to many gamers.

A few weeks ago I requested any individuals or groups who made their own music to get in touch if they fancied being involved in some sort of official PESGaming.com play list, which would be made available for free at the time of the game release to be installed onto your console. A handful of people got in touch, some sending tracks whilst other just providing links, however there was simply not enough interest to make this idea feasible, and therefore I have moved on to another idea involving play lists.

Many gamers will be more than happy to just use their usual music collection on the background of their games, and for example, listen to their favourite tracks whilst doing the editing or formations on PES 2009. For some, however, there is a preference to listen to music they are not familiar with, as a way of finding out about new artists and songs. EA Sports and 2K Sports have, for years, employed a system of mixing well know, chart tracks with up and coming artists or less mainstream music when creating their in game play lists, and I thought this would be an ideal opportunity for PESGaming.com to do the same.

I am planning to create an iMix, which will be available on iTunes as well as a list of songs on here, of tracks that may be less well known, as a way of varying the kind of music available to you on PES. For some people, this may have no appeal at all, which is perfectly fine, but if you are interested, feel free to let me know via e-mail, or comment on this column to express your interest. Also, if anyone knows of some real top artists, DJs, MCs or groups that deserve a bit of public exposure, be they just starting out, or unheard of in the mainstream market, please feel free to get in touch and give the name of the tracks. The songs need to be available on iTunes, and wherever possible feature minimal bad language.

“Time Won’t Change Me”

Thirdly, a massive thanks to everyone who has provided me with information for the IWP Option File Help Pack. There have been a couple of individuals, who I will mention in next weeks column, that have done a heck of a lot of work for the cause and hats are off to them. The pack is being finally compiled over the next 48 hours or so, and should be available for the weekend, on a request only basis. This means that if you wish to have the Option File Help Pack, you will need to ask for it via e-mail on the usual, Interfering With Play e-mail address. The Pack will be made available on general release before the game is released, but I want to keep tabs on how many people are interested in editing the game, and for what purposes. Please ensure you include the words, ‘Option File Pack’ in the subject heading of the e-mail.

I am still looking for information from foreign gamers (European, Japanese, U.S.A, South American) about your local sides. We have some great information about the English game, but if you could provide details such as strips, club badges, squad lists and team photos about any European, South American or MLS teams, and have the time to do so, your help will be appreciated, and all credit will given as appropriate. Contact the e-mail address below for more information.

“Won’t Let You Trick Me Twice”

Finally tonight, a word about showboating and in particular, fancy tricks in football games. I love showboating, and the Soccer AM feature of the same name always gives me great enjoyment. As a player myself, I have a fair few tricks, and am always teaching myself new ones whenever possible. The place of tricks in footballs games is always one of much debate, something that was started in FIFA 98, Road To World Cup. Up until this point, the majority of football games, and all the serious ones, only featured the back heel and scissors step overs, which was in keeping with football at that time. Yes, there were players that brought tricks to the game, but nothing like what we see today. FIFA 98 brought in a number of over the top, glamorous tricks that were beyond realism, and made beating defenders almost too easy. One trick, if I remember correctly saw the player with the ball turn around, flick the ball up and back heel it over his own head, getting you past the defender 9 times our of 10.

Following this, football games have always tried tricks with a certain level or realism, as in real football, ensuring that there is a realistic risk vs. reward ratio. Doing a trick at the wrong time should almost always cost a player possession, but if timed right, should earn them the space required. Last year saw EA Sports bring in the Trick Stick; a feature, which in theory was good, but in practice, fell slightly flat. The idea of moving the stick in a direction would produce a trick similar to the direction moved, in other words flip flaps or spins. The implementation was all wrong however, and very rarely did a trick come off, even if perfectly timed. Konami stuck with the button pressing technique (multiple presses of a shoulder button) to produce fancy tricks, or spinning the right stick to produce a number a predetermined tricks. Whilst this system worked better than EA’s it kind of took the realism out of performing the trick, meaning you were planning ahead which trick to use, and very little occurred spur of the moment.

The video doing the rounds of the FIFA 09 skills is a fantastic watch. Showing you how to do all the tricks on the controller, along with real life players performing the tricks in matches, almost single handily puts the poor FIFA Street to shame as a showboating contest. However, these tricks are done by maybe 5% of players, and critics are arguing that FIFA should be concentrating more on realistic football aspects as opposed to fancy ones that very rarely happen on a Saturday afternoon. In Walsall vs. MK Dons, the round the world kick up trick isn’t all too common! Shirt pulling, run blocking and bad challenges are more expected. If FIFA was only featuring the top teams and top players, it could be understood using these tricks, but in a game which features a wide scope of teams, spending so much time on tricks seems to be missing the point a little.

Meanwhile, Konami have addressed their tricks situation my assigning moves to the D pad. For me this is the next logical step, and one that I am surprised has taken so long to implement. Tricks such as the flip flap or flicking the ball up are limited to a handful of players, and whilst it would be nice to see maybe one or two different tricks, the fact that certain players have unique styles of doing each trick is very tasty indeed. Cristiano’s stopovers now look just like his real life’s counterparts, and set him apart from the other generic scissors stopovers from the game. Fans of PES will appreciate this nice touch, and as gamers play more, they will get used to pulling off different tricks at the right time, without having to fiddle around with shoulder buttons. Your views on the tricks situation would be greatly appreciated. Would the trick stick a welcome addition to PES? Do you wish Konami had stayed in the dark ages by keeping he showboating to the shoulder buttons? Are there too many tricks in FIFA? Comment in the usual way, via e-mail or hit the comments button!

That’s it for the week. Feel free to get in touch with your music recommendations. The less well known the better, as I want to include a wide variety of tracks from all over. Interferingwithplay@hotmail.co.uk is the place to send any e-mail to, regarding anything you have read about in this column. Thanks also go to Dave Ostrander for designing the relevant and trendy IWP logo.

Thanks for Reading

Well said about how PES 2009 is the most realistic game of both, and how Fifa has never give you the need to played it again, feel the same way.

  2. luke Says:

Will u please stop with calling us FANBOYS if there was a word that did my head in. I bet your just some chav without a job, bottle of cider everynight, fat girlfriend who smells of bacon while playing FIFA in a council flat. do one fagget.

Amen! I second that. This talk of FIFA now becoming a more realistic football game than PES from the gaming media and other folks, I dont buy it. Yes FIFA has improved a lot, but PES is still the better footy game interms of gameplay.

As for music we would like to see, I have always been a fan of Ministry of Sounds music. I feel their a lot of their music is usual fit be in sports games. So it would be nice to see songs like “Wearing My Rolex” in a PES game.

  4. magic Says:

less b real i love pro an all dat yhh but dis year even tho fifa is stil boring its more realistic than pro alie some of da passin on pro is weird an ud never see no one do dat in real life its kinda an unrealistic game now . probs stil buy it if i have doe bt its let me down nt as excited as i ws back in da dais wen id go 1st thing in the mornin to buy pro in the half terms

  5. The Gloaming Says:

Great idea for the playlist, heres a few tracks I will be importing for use in the menus in PES2009 you may or may not have heard of these tracks but they are all great and I think the trick is they need to be but also have to have depth and layers to the tracks so as not to get repetitive and annoying…put some thought into it and come up with this list. Hope you agree with at least some of the selections!!

    Idealistic – Digitalism

Crying – TV On The Radio

    Kids – MGMT

    Sick Sick Sick – QOTSA

Brown Paper Bag – Roni Size/Reprazent

All The Wine – The National

    Here It Comes – Doves

  6. Carl Says:

how do you import songs onto the ps3 to get to listen to them during the game???

  7. Ultimate Says:

    Hey guys,

can anyone please explain how importing your music tracks into the game will actually be implemented?
Will this be [on the X360] through any saved tracks on the Hard Drive?

    Would appreciate any feedback, thanks.
    Ban Triple K !

  8. The Joker Says:

    @ Ultimate

i think u save the songs on your hardware.

Ban Triple K (which will probably be 2moz) LMFAO

  9. bal Says:

just went on to wenb.com n read tht the team line ups from the demo is still in the real game…tht takes the piss,,,to think tht konami ave had plenty of time to change the team lineup is poor…but there will be a option file to correct this but still that is not good news…check it out for urself

  10. F.R.A.N.K. Says:

Tiple K you must be about 12 years old with nonesense like that. I have played FIFA and its terible as always, i think people just build it up because of all the licensing it has, becuase the game play is always far behind PES in realism and enjoyment.

    Ban Triple K

  11. bart Says:

ban kkk ban kkk ban kkk ban kkk ban kkk thats all i have to say you geek

  12. moe sizlack Says:

Good read Dan.On the subject of wanting kits and logo`s from abroad all i do is search google ie type LA Galaxy FC kit pics and up they pop, every thing from modern to classic, works with any team you can think of,even jossie`s giants are in there i think. Also going on club websites for squad names.Im sure you must have thought of this yourself.HAVENT YOU?

  13. Ultimate Says:

    Thanks ‘The Joker’,
was a bit worried at how the music thingy would work cos im not all that technologically advanced but have music on my hard drive and hopefully shouldnt struggle too badly 2 transfer in into the game that way!

Anyway looking forward to the game, but if its true that the demo teams stay the same for the final build, then im mighty disappointed. I’m not a Man Utd fan, but I could really tell that they needed a player like Berbatov when I played the demo.
Ban triple k [though if we are to believe his words, then hes gone now :) ]

  14. Anonymous Says:

guys have a look at you tube and type in pes 2009 online and you will see the online menus and how to play a match its turned bk into the way pes 6 was on the ps2 but has no tornament mode all it has is ranked and unranked matches in 1v1 and 2v2 which is slighty disapionting as with legends online mode evertone thought 4v4 but now its 4 vs the computer which is not great

i think they have really put work in on be a pro this yr thats why we are not seeing huge changes to master league and online for the normal game which is guttting but i suppose next yr i think they will put the normal game right like master league and new online features

i dont think they could of done alot more as this yr and also they need a reason for us to buy it again next yr i garantee they will never be a perfect game unfortunately they will just be good versions and not so good versions over the yrs

the amount that they have done this yr is great i mean they have upgraded the graphics as the are now outstanding and the gameplay only needs a few tweaks away from being perfect they have implemented be a pro offline and online even be 4 vs computer this im sure will also be 10v10 maybe next yr or at least 6 v 6 (all the attacking players)unfortunately be a pro has cost master league an upgrade but ppl will be playing be a pro this yr more and i bet master league will cost be a pro next yr an upgrade

has anyone tried both ps3 and 360 versions of the demo yet i was astonised that the 360 version has such clearer graphics the playstation version the edges of everything is jagidy (not sure if thats how u spell it) it really is quite a difference and i have a 1080p hd tv but both games only run on 720p so dont give me all the excuses for ps3 also i think pes is better graphically during normal play than fifa but fifa looks better in replays than pes but players do not look like themselfs in replays from fifa

i also wanted loads of modes like fifa but after playing it there is just to many options and like pes as it easy to see what game modes are how good you are online with fifa there to many options all the time but playing through a premier league season with the league cup and fa cup in it is great feeling

i do like the little things like goal celabrations and will be stunned if pes does not nick this idea for next yrs thats where fifa gets it right they do little thing well but pes is catching up on this

i enjoyed the demo the only things that are bad about the demo is:
i think players work to hard which makes the game look too fast and frantic and it doesnt look like real footie i think it would of been better if they made the pitch smaller cause i know there trying to make it more realistic meaning you have no space and have to pass quick but it just doesnt look right also its not gonna look right when ppl like berbatov run side to side back and forth chasing like its the last ball they will ever get i think putting a work rate rating would be a better idea and maybe even a team work rate rating as then some teams will be lazy so you have more space against them

the other being refs not only are they card happy but they get in the way this happens in fifa as well also there is to many collisions with opposing plyer due to 3 -4 players closing you down at a time

the person who had the ball takes longer to get there footing after a tackle even though the person who does the sliding tackle is on the floor and they manage to get up and get to the ball be4 the person who got tackled whos still on there feet

when u first control it takes a while for you to start sprinting allowing the defender to get bk at you even though u were in loads of space when you recieved the ball

ive noticed players dont come to collect balls as much any more so you have to come to the ball more which i suppose is more realistc but just gotta get used to it which makes it easier for interceptions

shooting is maybe a bit floaty but the main worry is if any1 is near you when you shoot the ball flys over even from 6 yrds which is a joke and when your playing against real ppl if you hold the tackle button they just cant shoot

i think if your gonna play online this yr its gonna have to be a 10 min game unfortunately but this game i think you will be rewarded more than past version as every tom dick and harry could be good last yr i mean on xbox live i was in the top 1000 most of the year and i hardly played it

i hope they do sort these issues this yr but definately next yr i admit fifa looks like a game on sky sports and plays like it untill the attacking 3rd pes would look and feel like a real game if they sorted out players running frantically everywhere im not sure whats going to be more fun online this yr we will have to wait and see but have a look at the youtube vid of online modes its 6mins 42 let me know your feed bk.

Am i the only one who couldnt give a f*ck about the Legend mode?? I want to see them get the rest of the game perfected like better master league, better editing, more licsenced teams and tournements,up to date transfers, more stadiums, better weather conditions like fog snow and wind.I dont care about some copy of that Libero Grande game of PS1.Chrisze you have just depressed me mate with that news.

  16. Ultimate Says:

Agree with the comment above me by Moe.
I’m totally into the Master League!
Was really hoping for some new fetures for that this year, but guess its not meant to be.
Wont really be playing ‘be a pro’ to be honest. i Just love the idea of Master League!

  17. dansweetfeet Says:

    @24
an online tournament would be ace, but lets have the lag sorted as first priority! and transfers fixed via an XBox Live update asap would be nice

  18. dansweetfeet Says:

also would like more post-match analysis

  19. The Gloaming Says:

I will put £100 on that online is riddled with problems again. I suspected that 4 vs 4 had been taken out at the last minute and posted a thread about it last week. Really this is pathetic why hype something then take it out I suspect they couldn’t get it to work online properly with 8 players. So, Legend mode is basically a total waste of time now. Who wants to play in an exhibition match with 3 others against the computer. Why wopuld you bother building up your Legend. It really has lost 50% of the games appeal now. I was gonna suggest a Legends league where we could organise games on here and have teams of 4 playing each other home and away so so much potential down the ****ing piss pot.
So Konami how has online been improved?? Ohyou’ve just reverted to how it worked on PS2, oh ok thats logical, makes total sense… IF YOU ARE ****ING RETARDED!!!!
I’m so pissed off right now it’s untrue not to mention the whole squad fiasco… stinks of pure laziness on Konamis part

  20. francis Says:

    @ Ultimate

You save the songs on your hard drive and then in game you bring up the Xbox guide [that big button between the start and select buttons] and go down and click ’select music’.

If you’ve got a wireless connection on your laptop or pc you can even take it off of that provided the xbox is connected wirelessly or wired to the same – router? Whatever it is that you plug into the wall :)

    Hope that helps.

  21. Luke Hunt Says:

im gutted about the Xbox not being able to import photos. what is Konami’s problem.

    19 stadiums
8 boots 1 colour for each
    no untucked shirts
3 licenced balls 8 konami balls
    7 la liga licenced teams
    no 4 on 4 online

im really begining to reconsider my status as a PES fan. dissapointment after dissapointment from these guys. You know what strangly enough that KKK guy might be right

we deserve a better class of football sim and maybe EA sports are gonna have to give it us

after all thses years. these are sad times as a PES fan

  22. Simon McDermott Says:

    @24anonymous.

I’ve been playing the Ps3 version and aren’t that impressed with the graphics to be quite honest. The graphics of players in wide view look a bit jagged around the edges.
They are a big improvement on last year though. If you go back to last years version after a game on the demo, the difference in detail and style is massive.
I think players hold their position much better this year and are less skiddy, last year they were like bamby on ice, almost like ice hockey players.
On the subject of Fifa 09, I borrowed it from a mate and have been playing it on-line all evening.
I’m someone who likes to pass the ball alot to open up space for my players to run into, I like to use long balls so that i can square the ball Beckham style to the other side of the pitch, to stretch defences and create space.
I found with Fifa the passing is far to slow to use this tactic and I found that even though my passing was far better than the people I was playing against, I would mainly get scored against by frustrating one man road runner dashes, using a single player to run through my unresponsive defence.
Shooting was also very slow and the players look more like they are kicking a medicine ball than a football.
Players are very unresponsive. You normally have to plan passing moves in advance, like building up a cue of commands ahead of play.
The game was enjoyable to play, but it does strongly favour a one hit killer pass, or dribbling game, as opposed to flowing passing movement’s, which is something Pes wins on hand’s down.
The commentary is very good, almost enviable, with Andy Gray and Martin Tyler, coming out with topical comments throughout the match. One such commnet was about how Cristiano Ronaldo was surpassing his namesake Brazil’s Ronaldo.
The main problem I had with the game though is the feel of the play is very delayed and unrealistic, it also seems to favour a through the middle of the park game. The crossing is very slow and I don’t like the way players seem to hang in the air waiting for the ball to come to their heads.
I have always preferred Pes to Fifa, and once the new game comes out, I doubt I’ll feel the urge to play Fifa again this year. If they can sort the passing speed, movement, and delayed reactions of players it would be a much better game. It’s a totally different game to Pes though and perhaps should be treated as such.

  26. Ultimate Says:

    Thanks Francis mate.
I was under the impression that we could incorporate music directly into the game without going to the Xbox guide etc and manually playing tracks.
Is there no option in this years game that allows us to incorporate our own tracks into the menu music for example as this years music is horrendous, though surprisingly better than last years haha.
And on the subject of Triple K, guy is probably loving it, centre of attention without even saying anything now, so lets stick to the lovely PES chat guys. Thats why we’re all here.
And I gotta agree with some of the comments coming in, no 4v4 is disappointing!

  27. francis Says:

    @ Ultimate

The music you select to play from the Xbox guide will play instead of the menu music!

simon mcdermott i was sayin the ps3 version is not as sharp and detailed as 3q60 i dont know y but i was gonna get the ps3 version but after playing both i couldnt believe that the 360 was better as it shouldnt be at all the only thing i can think of is they have been making 360 for extra yr so they know how to develop better but lets say i was suprised and i did say both were better its just that the 360 look another level better honest

i am to gettin more gutted the more i see of this version ive just been looking at pesfan q&a page and i expect a game to deliver good suprises not bad suprises anyway as i said earlier post 24 the most gutting is no online tornament like they should be as they have gone bk to pes 6 on ps2 style of online at least then we had a tornament bk then i didnt think a huge amount of it as i was playing pes 6 for xbox 360 most so didnt get to enoy pes 6 ps2 as much as i would of wanted to but i was expecting a tornament in the next version pes 2008 but then they couldnt even get a ranked match right so lucky it wasnt in place this is becoming a joke

  30. Ultimate Says:

    Thanks again Francis;
told you i’m a bit slow mate
to be fair it is 2am haha.

  31. Gaphead Says:

the legends mode couldnt really work 4v4 as you have one player who will be either an attacking midfielder or centre forward/ shadow striker etc… with no control over the defence online 4v4 would be weak as you’d rely on cpu defence and for as many advances this game may have on 2008 or pes6 i still wouldnt trust a cimputer controlled defence for toffee. its a nice concept just impractical

  32. Craig Says:

There is an excellent review of FIFA 2009 on Metacritic. Whilst it says FIFA 2009 has nearly caught up to PRO EVO on the pitch, there are still HUGE problems with FIFA 2009 which you only find out after 5-6 hours of play.

PRO EVO RULES AND THIS IS WHY!!

    FIFA 2009 FLAWS:

    AI of keepers is erratic
Through balls to strikers have a massive glitch when executed
    Manger mode is awful
The licensed teams are spolit by complely unrealistic league tables – Man uTd 18th West Brom 2nd anyone???
Unrealistic scorelines between CPU games when in manager mode i.e. WEstBrom 5 Manu 3 WTF??
Players stats increase far too much
CPU always make 2 subs after 55 minutes in EVERY GAME
EVERY game is played in daylight and fine conditions

Player likeness of some players are AWFUL
Comentary is same as FIFA 2008

  33. ehsan Says:

PES 09 rocks maan .. Fifa 09 sucks as always :D

  34. DONOTABUSE Says:

I hope PRO EVO gets all these things spot on this year.

We know master league is great but I hope they get all the little things right this year which made PRO EVO 6 more immersive and realistic than PRo evo 2008.

1)They better have the scores flash up on the screen at half and full time in MAster League.
    2) They better have more injuries and fouls by the CPU.
3)They beter have more realistic scores between cpu games – in pro evo 2008 all the games were so unrealistically low scoring!
    4) European games all played at night.

  35. Why? Says:

I just don’t get it why you people are trying to get some positive thing about new PES games by forcing it. If you have played PES5 or PES6 I just don’t get why have you bothered playing PES2008? You all have to admit that it sucks. New demo feels ok but something is missing, no more those WAU efects in player animations.

I hope that the final game is better than demo and i’m praying not to be forced to buy FIFA..It would be much better if we all admit and critice Konami for ruining PES series

  36. Anonymous Says:

post 47 your clearly thick or the reviewers are as every team in fifa is licensed dumb arse

  37. Craig Says:

    To 52
Ye obviously I know that but the factFIFA features fully licensed teams seems pointless when the realism is wrecked with completely unrealistic league tables and pathetic scorelines. I think thats what the reviewer was saying.

At least in Master League, all the good teams are battling for the title and all the **** teams are getting hammered 5-0 and 4-1 every game. Thats realism and attention to detail from Konami.

This won’t happen in FIFA manager mode and thats why its Pants

  38. Roguless Says:

I’m enjoying the Pro Evo 2009 demo for the most part, there are still several things that it would be nice to have addressed to make it even better, but its much better than pro 08 no doubt.

I actually enjoy the fact both computer and user teams are more likely to pick up a card or 2 in most games, adds another level of intrigue to each match sometimes and will have you managing your lists in season’s play and master league even more so. In previous Pro Evo’s I’ve played many 38+ game seasons and only ended up with 4 yellow cards for the entire season.

I would also however like to see the GK’s a little further improved, particulary when covering dangerous crosses near to them, as well as defenses covering deep crosses a little bit better.

Am also interested to see what kind of difference to players and gameplay it will make when the form meters are on and taken into account, how much of an extra edge will it give some players over others, as well as the fatigue issues which were a problem with last seasons ML and other seasonal play where a few players would too play one match and have to be rested for the very next. Needs to be improved.

Overall however its heading more so in the right direction.

  40. marty Says:

having been a pro man since the days of iss 64 and before that iss snes, i havent been excited by the demo this year, having said that there was a big differnce between the fifa demo and the full game. maybe there will be the same difference betwen the pro demo and the full game, maybe sorting the crap manual passing and the 8 way turning circle. i shall of course be buying pro although not convinced by it, i feel a duty to the game, hopefully it repays my faith

  41. Why? Says:

What do we own to Konami? and it is stupid to say its your duty! OK since iss64 PES has given us great times but do we own over 60€ price per crappy game and we have payd for all PES games so far. Seabass said himself last year that pes2008 isn’t so good. If we all buy games what have been much worse, is there so much pressure to make it much better next year?

  50. Fuzz Says:

I totally disagree with the assertion that PES is the more realistic of the two football games. The author must be living in a world 5 years ago, when this was true. The truth is, the roles of PES and FIFA have been reversed, with FIFA being the more authentic simulation and PES being more ‘fun’.

I’ve always played PES, and haven’t played FIFA since FIFA 98, but last night I wen out and bought FIFA09. This was on the back of a number of sites INCLUDING PES fansites (WENB) raving about its quality. I’ve got to say that I haven’t been disappointed, especially online where the range of modes puts PES’s efforts to shame. I’ve still got PES on pre-order and I’m looking forward to having two quality football games that offer very different experiences this year.

  51. Lynham Says:

    true that
2 great football games, but have to admit fifa already getting boring, PES demo is more exciting despite only being able to play with 6 teams!

  52. Jamsey08 Says:

A fantastic article. Even sneaking in an old reference to the previously named ISS which brings back many memories of trying and succeeding in scoring ‘the worlds greatest goal!’ only to have your mate go that step further with a classic of his own!

Can I just ask, this option pack file, what does it actually contain?

    Cheers!

  53. bal Says:

the biggest thing tht is annoying on pes09 is the stupid keepers…they are rubbish keep parying the ball bacnk into the middle of the goal so a striker can kick the ball in the goal…played the demo many times n is always the same thing…n the free kicks are not great when it come to crossing the ball in2 goal so someone can header in…as the players are never in the correct position.

  60. CELTICSHADYTOWN Says:

Thomas i played fifa at the weekend and have to say it was good i usually cant stand fifa games but in my opinion pes2009 will top it and be num 1 footy game

  61. Sha Says:

Fifa is no where near as realistic as pes. ive got fifa 09 on the ps3 and the gameplay is not very responsive, the ball physics are terrible, the shooting is bad, the dribbling is bad, heading at goal is a joke. The ANIMATIONS ARE TERRIBLE!!!!! for example playing with big peter crouch – he is taller then every other player which is fine but when it cuts to an animation like he gets booked suddenly he becomes the same height as everybody else?!?!? little things like that show how lazy ea have been, the crowd is terible, the stadiums are terrible, the strips are terrible, the names on the strips are a joke, crossing is terrible, free kicks are bad. everything seems rushed to get to the kick off – players coming out the tunnels etc.

PES is far more superior to fifa in terms of a realistic football sim. If you have any appriciation for the game of football then you would choose PES. Fifa is for people who enjoy watching football but actually no nothing of how to play the game. I play football at a high standard and all the lads in the dressing room prefere Pro Evo, even a couple of professional players i know prefere it including a premeirship player. If your sh it at football you play fifa if you know abit and can play abit your prefere PES. simple as that!

    Sha out!

    @43 Anonymous
I know mate, their was massive problems with slow down last year, which were alot worse on the PS3 than the 360.
I know alot of programmers have had trouble portraying their work om the PS3

  65. Steven Says:

triple k – Suck on this.

I find it strange that the general belief is that FIFA has better graphics and Pro better gameplay. Pro’s graphics are much more realistic and lifelike. Think this stems from the sponsorship problems.

Just bought the Playstation Eye Camera. Can’t wait to put my face in the game. BECOME A LEGEND!

  66. Fuzz Says:

I think only people that have played a number of games on FIFA09 can really comment on it. I also think that both games are going to offer different things according what you want. It’s like any genre really, sports is no different. If you want a ‘real’ fighting game you play fight night etc. if you want to have a casual laugh you play mortal kombat/tekken. If you want a ‘real’ driving sim you play GT, if you want a casual ‘fun’ driving game you play something like burnout. It’s all about tastes, and I know I’ve owned both types of game.

I think pes will try harder to become a sim again this year, tho I’m not sure after seasbass’ latest comments: “With pes we never originally set out to create a simulation game”, which they clearly did and did very well. I think he’s trying to get a bit of slack in case FIFA turns out to be more realistic and pes is more ‘fun’. I can’t imagine playing FIFA the whole night with a group of mates because it’s not that ‘fun’. But it does give me the satisfaction of feeling like I’m in a real match with all the glamour, moments and tension that goes with being a club footballer.

  67. moe sizlack Says:

Fifa is crap, roll on the 17th

  68. moe sizlack Says:

Fuzz ive played Fifa a good few times,my son rented it.God its so boring.Games just develop into scrappy midfield tackling contests. The shooting is pathetic and words cant describe how bad the crossing is.Players all feel the same and the custom tactics that EA have droned on about are totally pointless as they have no visable effect on the way the team plays or performs. As for the addidas live updates they are just another pointless gimmick.

  69. Simon McDermott Says:

    (Sorry pressed submit by mistake)
    Continuation from post 93.

And perhaps this is why we are seeing a lower level of graphical quality on the Ps3. Perhaps they had to reduce sharpness slightly to avoid slow down issues again.

    @45Gaphead

I played 10vs10 on Fifa last night and later in the night it descended to 4v4. As you get to pick your player from the online screen just before the match starts, no one picked a defender, just midfielders and strikers.
This worked well, as you both have the same disadvantage, and I actually found the com players defended better than their human counterparts.
I have to say though the Fifa wide vertical view is no where near as good as the Pes vertical view. The Fifa view seemed very distant and movement is extremely delayed making it very hard to attack and defend.
In some of my earlier games I played as a central defender and then a right back. It was no fun at all playing these positions and quite tricky due to the erratic camera movement to try and hold your defensive lines.
When playing 10v10 etc, there is a small bar at the bottom of the screen giving you pluses or minuses throughout the match. At the end your scores are tallied up and you get the man of the match awards ect.
Although this worked well I preferred the way Konami presented this mode, in their Become A Legend video, so if you can’t play 4v4 online, then this is a massive shame, and it was actually one of the main modes I was looking forward too.

    @51Why

I know what you mean about next gen Pes. I was very vocal about what I felt is wrong with it on the evening of the demo’s release, I got completely slated for these comments, and was even called a Fifa fanboy, for disliking it.
I remember one guy set up a user name calling himself Simon McDermott is a wanker, which was quite amusing, but I couldn’t understand why others couldn’t see what I could.
I had an in depth conversation with one of my mates who like me and you has been playing Pes, ISS, ect since the old days. He was also disappointed with the next gen additions of Pes and like me he sold his copy of 2008 and went back to Pes6 Ps2, because the gameplay and freedom of movement was far superior.
From reading people comments it may be that the Ps3 version is less smooth than the 360, less polished than the 360, due to extra production time Konami have had on that platform.
I think the reason why the old games engine on the Ps2 is a lot freer and more responsive, with much better goal keepers and the likes, is because they may have spent more time developing it before the first Pes was released. Just think they had years of ISS experience and made sure they got it right for their new franchise Pro Evolution Soccer. The problem that we are seeing at the moment is that, because Konami have not allowed themselves the time to take a few years out, to get the engine right before bringing out a new version, we are seeing a work in progress, instead of having a big gap and then getting presented with a proper next gen Pes. This I feel has slowed work with the games engine because of all the extra work that comes with releasing a new Pes game every year.
I think Pes 2009 will have to do for now, even though I feel the gameplay is not quite there yet, and as many have said the finished article plays and looks a little better than the demo anyhow.
I’m hoping 2010 and 2011 will see dramatic change to the franchise, and a proper next gen Pes otherwise as Sir Isaac Newton said “those less suited to change are the least likely to survive”.Or something like that anyway!

  70. Fuzz Says:

I do get annoyed by how easy it is to tackle most players, and the games are low scoring because of that. but how often do you see a tackle in a real match and how often do you see goals? in the premier league you’ll get about 2 or 3 goals a game on average, which take 2-3 minutes on average to score and the rest of the 88+ mins is spent on tackles/scraps. It does feel like even the best players on FIFA can’t evade a tackle the same way you can in PES. But i stand by what i said, they both offer different things to different people

  71. wolvesfan09 Says:

Can i ask one important question?are people that stupid?the site is for pro evo not for fifa!i dont mind peoples opinions but why are they all coming on saying fifa is better!get a job!or go talk to a fifa forum where they lap it up!bet theres no pro evo people in the fifa forums!

I think Ill buy PES this year….if the game + shipping isnt too expensive. I doubt it will be released officialy in Argentina…..
As for the game: theres a heavy FPS drop in penalty kicks ( PC Version ). I dont know if thats the reason of why penalty shots look so weak.

  77. King but I wear no Bling Says:

Howdy, PES is so good and FIFA dosnt feel right. P.S i wear no bling WASSABI

  78. Justin Says:

    @ Fuzz 103

    FIFA 09 low scoring?

I don’t think I have played one 10 minute game where I have scored less than 3 goals on Legend against the computer.

Against friends it is not unusual for both of us to score in excess of 4 or 5 goals each.

PES 09 on the other hand it is not unusual for me to have a goalless draw with the computer on REGULAR! I know it is only a 5 minute demo, but still, on the FIFA 09 demo I used to score AT LEAST 2 goals a game on World Class.

I’m sorry but I just don’t see how people can say that FIFA 09 is harder and more realistic than PES 09. Not to mention the other annoying things that ruin the game, like West Brom fighting for a top spot in the league table. WTF?

  79. Stu Says:

My opinion of FIFA 09 is that it’s crap, but then again I only played it til it got to bout 25mins in game. (Only bought it so I can copy La Liga kits for PES 09 and wasn’t planning to play any matches on it anyway.) Even though I’ve got a PS3 I will just be getting PES 09 on the PS2, mainly coz my mates all play it on PS2. Will the edit mode be same on PS2 as on PS3?

  105. Big G Says:

    @ 101

Craig according to the Atari website its being relaased on the 24th of october in oz if you want it any earlier go to Big W, for the past 3 years they put PES on the shelf about 5 days earlier from everyone else! and its the cheapest as well!!!

  106. Craig Says:

Big G, thanks for that mate.
I was contemplating importing it from the UK but i wasn’t sure if my PS3 would play it.
I’ll be hunting dwon PRO EVO in Big W from the 19th.

  107. Justin Says:

    Craig.

I imported PES 2008 from the UK and it worked fine.

Remember, the PS3 is region free for ALL GAMES. So if you wanted you could even get the US or JAP version and it would work fine. I usually go for whatever is cheapest or whatever will get me the game quicker, depending on how much I am dying to play the game.

  108. Craig Says:

    Justin, cheers for the info.

I bought my PS3 in Singapore so its NTSC not PAL. It works with Australian PAL games. In Singapore they sell PS3’s chipped so they play Australian PAL games but I was told it WOULD not work with European PAL games.
So have I been given the run around and paid for a chipped PS3 for no reason?? WTF?

  109. Justin Says:

Yes unfortunately you’ve been conned mate.

There is no need for PS3s to be chipped as they are region free out of the box. And to my knowledge there is still no chip or flash hack for the PS3 as of yet, and I check for one quite frequently at ps3-hacks.com. I’m a bit of a pirate.

I also have an NTSC PS3, mine is from Hong Kong, and it plays european Pal games flawlessly. In fact, almost all of my games are EU Pal games as I buy them off ebay for about $60 each. Although with the aussie dollar how it is at the moment I can’t see them being that cheap at the moment.

  110. Craig Says:

Cheers Justin, I can’t believe I was conned. Those Singaporians, they’ll tell you anything to make a dollar. I still don’t understand why they have a region number on the back of PS3 games though??

    Roll on PRO EVO!!

  111. CROFREAK Says:

Most PS3 games are region free !!!
