IWP League Champion 2008: Martin Ginnelly (River Plate)

Welcome to this week’s Interfering With Play. For anyone who was in any doubt, Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 is now available all over Europe, with American and Australian dates following in the upcoming weeks. If you’re a fan of the series, chances are you have already picked up a copy and have spent a fair bit of time with the title. Opinions will already be formed and most people will have already decided on whether or not it is the greatest football game ever, or just another Konami botch job. True to form, I will be reviewing the game next week, after spending a bit more time playing the various game modes and using different teams. I will also be reviewing FIFA 2009, with both reviews being made available for download on this site. I will not be posting either review in blog format, as I do not wish to force my review upon the PESGaming.com community, and would rather give you the option of reading it should you wish. I will, however, be posting a blog comparing the two games in a few weeks time, with an honest and frank assessment of which game, in my opinion, is the better title. That’s all to come, so lets just take a few steps back, and crack on with this week’s Interfering With Play.

“If My Life Is For Rent”

Just wanted to start off this week with a quick response to some comments made last week about EA Sports sending me a complimentary copy of FIFA 09. The more astute of you will have realised I am yet to pass comment on EA Sports latest title, and was merely praised the PR department of a huge gaming company for taking the time to get in contact with the fans of football gaming. I would also like to point out that in my response e-mail to EA Sports, I informed them in no uncertain terms that my views or opinion were not for sale, and I would be perfectly honest about EA Sports and FIFA football in all future blogs, articles and conversations.

It should be once again brought forward that they made contact with me, yet I had to make contact first with Konami, a point that will no doubt be looked back upon again in future months. My views about the company of EA Sports remain the same, and I would like to once again state them for all to read. EA Sports are a huge super power within the sporting gaming world, and are responsible for the progression of the genre on a number of platforms and different levels. At times, their cut throat style has seen them put an end to some of the best loved sporting franchises and they have a very ruthless streak when it comes to eliminating competition. However, as soon as that competition disappears, the company does seem to rest upon it laurels and produce average video games on a less than regular basis (Rugby, Cricket) and the true people who suffer are the fans of that particular sport, as no other gaming companies have the clout to compete. Whilst this is the case, they do produce games towards a key demographic which tend to lap up the titles on a regular basis, and for that reason the company must be seen as successful. If games like Actua Soccer, This Is Football or even Sensible Soccer had progressed in any way, then they would still be released on a yearly basis, supported by a loyal fan base. As is it, these games were simply not of a high enough standard to compete with PES and FIFA, and therefore dwindled away into nothing. Comparing EA Sports to Chelsea is an analogy that has been done to death, but rings fully true, even if you dislike the company, which at times I definitely do, you must at least have an admiration for the way they do certain things.

“Whatever Makes You Happy”

Reading the hundreds of comments that have been posted following the release of Pro Evolution Soccer 2009, I have to smile at some of the points made. I am not sure what people were expecting from Konami with this title, but a fair bit of the criticism given is harsh. I am trying my best to keep my views on the game held back until the review is made public, but there are certain things that should be praised, and instead are getting a great deal of unnecessary stick. People complaining that you can ‘only import 60 tracks’ into PES2009! This is a progression of both the Pro Evolution Soccer series and of gaming in general, incorporating your own sound track. Sixty songs may not be huge in this day and age, yet it is still enough to offer a wide variety of tunes that mean you could play for a couple of hours and not have to listen to the same song twice. People complaining that the chant-importing feature doesn’t sound perfect. In my experience, using a chant pack I have found online, the chants sound perfectly fine, and add to the experience. However, even if they don’t sound as accurate as the real life ones, it is still the introduction of a new feature, which, over the next few years, will become more and more commonplace within the gaming world. Providing this is deemed to be successful by Konami, both features will hopefully be enhanced for future editions of the game and become ‘part of the furniture’.

I have always been very open about my views regarding Konami, be they negative or positive and in this situation; I must applaud Konami for trying to add these new features. The quality of the edit mode cannot be questioned this year and for the first time in a while, it seems that Konami are encouraging us, the PES community, to make the game our way. This may go further, with the option to customise menu screens, or even video highlight packages, but for the time being, the ability to import images and songs into the game via hard drives is a huge step in the right direction. With games like LittleBigPlanet providing limitless potential for editing the way we play computer games, it seems that Konami are actually embracing the “do things your own way” path which video gaming in general seems to be heading down.

With this said, and as a question to PESGaming.com visitors out there, what aspects of PES would you like to see editable in the future? Perhaps the ability to create your own stadiums? Would you like to be able to compile Showboat style video clips to post online? Or is there something else? Customisation is the future of gaming, and its nice to see Konami getting in at something on the ground level, for a change.

“My Only Words Of Wisdom are RADIO EDIT”

To all of you who have purchased PES2009, you will probably be exceptionally disappointed with lack of up to date transfers within the game. Normally, I would have spent the previous few days slaving all night getting the game as up to date as possible, however I have held back for one very simple reason, Konami’s downloadable update. In case you haven’t heard, Konami have ‘promised’ a patch within the next 2 weeks, which will update transfers and add extra teams into the game, all for free! Whilst this raises the obvious question, why weren’t these added to the game before its release, it also explains the delay suffered by the last generation versions of the game, as they would have no way of updating.

Whilst this patch is no doubt good news for PES players, no one is entirely sure what affect it will have on your current PES data, and any editing that you may have done to your game prior to the patch’s installation. Basically, what this means is it could, potentially, delete all the editing you have currently done, including club logos and strips and replace them with the generic ones. This would no doubt prove to be exceptionally frustrating, and therefore I can offer the following advice. If you haven’t already started editing Pro Evolution Soccer yet, don’t start until after the patch is out. If you play a lot with mates, it might make sense to do the latest, big name transfers, but other than that, wait and see what goodies the patch brings. It is for this reason that I will not be hosting or recommending any option files until after the release of the patch. PESGaming.com will have all the latest information regarding patch release dates, and what the patch actually does when the data becomes available.

“Come Feel The Noise”

For those of you who are interested, the Interfering With Play playlist is up and running on iTunes as an iMix. The idea of this playlist is to offer an alternative selection of tracks for you to download and use as menu music for PES2009. I would like to thank everyone who took the time to suggest tracks for the list, in particular Tom Laskowski, who provided a number of songs for the final collection. Following a brief trimming, I cut the final list from 30 to 21 songs, in order to help save the expense of buying an overpriced playlist for a number of unknown tracks. If you wish to obtain a full list of all 30 songs from the original IWP Playlist, please e-mail me with your request and one will be sent to your inbox.

I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that PESGaming.com, Interfering With Play or myself make no profit from this selection of songs, and that Interfering With Play supports legal downloading. The Interfering With Play iMix is available from the iTunes store by simply typing in ‘Interfering With Play’ when searching for an iMix.

“The World’s Greatest”

Finally this week, I am asking opinions of the community on who they feel the best team are on Pro Evolution Soccer 2009. Only a few days into the game, and having only used a handful of sides, my personal favourites are Chelsea, as they seem to suit my style of play down to the ground. As the year goes on, I will no doubt go through a series of phases of different sides, but at this early stage, Scolari’s men are my choice. However, there are no doubt a lot of top teams out there, and I am sure everyone will have their own opinion. Whilst not an official poll, I will be posting the results in next week’s column, so either e-mail me or comment me with your response. For this particular task, feel free to include the team’s real name, or their PES Name, in other words Arsenal or North London. Also, could we try and keep the results to club sides only.

That’s your lot for this week’s column. A lot of topics to cover, yet very little actually typed about the game itself. This is intentional, as I plan to express my views of the game in a review format, and do not wish to say too much about the title until that point. However, I will say that I am very much enjoying Pro Evolution Soccer 2009! interferingwithplay@hotmail.co.uk is the e-mail address you can reach me on. Please refrain from messaging regarding option files, as I will not be providing links or recommending one until the patch release. Thanks again to Dave Ostrander for providing the IWP Logo.

Thanks for Reading

after playin pes almost non stop since its release i must say fifa is back on top,i like pes its a good game but just little things make it so unrealistic like the way players turn amazingly fast and the fact players like torres cant race past somebody like bramble is massively frustrating. i love the way the stadiums look real though an like you i was disgusted about the transfers not being up to date. i find Fifa the winner this year but pes is still a good game

  2. R I P PES Says:

PES, PRO EVOLUTION “SOCCER”. DONT MAKE ME LAUGH. IT`S CALLED FOOTBALL. FIFA 09 IS THE GREATEST FOOTBALL SIMULATION AT PRESENT. PES IS A LITTLE BOYS GAME. PES WAS ONCE GREAT I ADMIT, BUT FIFA 09 IS WAY AHEAD IN TERMS OF GRAPHICS, PRESENTATION, UPDATED SQUADS AND SORRY TO SAY GAMEPLAY. TELL SEABASS OR WHATEVER HIS NAME IS TO STICK A COPY OF PES 9 UP HIS B*M, BECAUSE THATS WHERE IT BELONGS. SOONER OR LATER YOU HARDCORE PES FANS WILL EVENTUALLY TURN TO FIFA, WHY? BECAUSE WE ALL LIKE TO PLAY FOOTBALL THE WAY IT SHOULD BE PLAYED, THATS THE REASON YOU STUCK WITH PES SO FAR? AM I RIGHT. PES HAS RAN OUT OF IDEAS AND GAS, FIFA NEEDS A BIT MORE FINE TUNING WITH THE GAMEPLAY AFTER THAT IT WILL BE UNSTOPPABLE. SORRY,YOUR ONCE GREAT PES FRANCHISE IS NEARLY FINISHED, IF YOU CANT BEAT US JOIN US. FIFA 09 IS THE PURE FOOTBALL SIMULATION.
    R.I.P PES.

  3. sick pes fan boy Says:

i am an idiot, i support spurs and i just hate criticism of any sort(you can understand why?). i love pes so much i cant bear it to be second best to fifa. i have been crying since friday, when i go out on the streets i feel people are looking at me and laughing? I have been traumatized by PES 2009.
I have been to see a doctor and he has subscribed me fifa 09. he says this will make me feel better? how can this be?

  4. sick pes fan boy Says:

i have listened to my doctor, and suddenly i`m feeling better? people with this illness should take notice

  5. go with the wind~~~ Says:

HMV has confirmed its entry into the pre-owned games market under the Re/Play brand.

It will be officially launched on Friday 24th October with an extensive marketing campaign featuring national and consumer press.

great news i will be trading in my PES 2009 for fifa 09

  6. jimmyboots Says:

Isnt this site called PESGAMING. can we drop the fifa talk, and talk about the pes game.

  7. gooderz Says:

i cant get enough of be a legend. what a buzz!!! and the music upload is brilliant!!! we dont have to listen to some shmuck on a casio anymore!!! redman marley and de la soul during pre season, what more could you want?!?!!! it’s a massive step.

respect to all who are doing option files!!! makes the game 10 times better for us stoners without having to lift a finger :-)

  8. Carl Says:

i wont be downloading the patch, no point, i have all clubs and national sides fully licensed now etc, looking great, why would i want to ruin it just for the sake of having bayern munich and werder bremen in? ill never play as them anyway

as for best club side, despite being a liverpool fan and winning 4 out of 4 games as them in the master league, i have to say the best team ive played as so far is inter milan, on the wings, mancini and quaresma are superb, up-front ibrahimovich is quality, but suprisingly the worst team so far is real madrid, struggled in champions league with them, only qualifying from the group with 9 points, 2 wins and 3 draws, including a 2-1 defeat at the bernebau by cluj, and only drawing with them on there ground, i only qualified thanks to the last game, a 2-1 win over panathinaikos where i was clining onto the lead for dear life, the only players who impressed me for madrid were sneijder and de la red

  9. bobby Says:

I dont know which one to choose b/w the updated USB and konami’s update patch.Which site can I download the konami patch?

  10. ehsan Says:

O maan , Fifa 09 just so boring a game u will feel Nausea , PEs came like a fresh ghust of wind and I wont touch that unresponsive fifa ever again :D

  11. Mroc13 Says:

Will the uk version work on a US PS3? Is there a NTSC / PAL selector?

  12. F.R.A.N.K. Says:

Why do FIFA fans still come to this site to slate PES? I dont feal the need to go to a FIFA fans site and slate FIFA!! Because i know which game is the best. For me game play comes top of my list and FIFAs is poor as usual with all players fealing the same with no distinction in thier styles. Everyone bangs on about PES not having upto date transfers and fake kits and team names. SO WHAT???? its only for two weeks, then you can either download the patch or use an option file made by other fans (always very high quality). Then you have the rest of the year to enjoy PESs superior footballing experiance. FIFA fans always try to force FIFA on everyone and i dont understand it. You enjoy your licencing and we will enjoy our superb game play!!!

  13. nikicampos Says:

    @ Carl.

You have to think online play, we all know that the game can be fully edited and that you have all the transfers.

What people can do is, save your option file and edit file in a memory flash, then download the PES patch, see what changes it made, and if it not that big then just use your saved file.

But keep in mind that for sure you will need this patch to play online, so it’s better to wait and after the patch just install your option file.

  14. Edot Says:

Athletico Madrid are a great team! Aguero is a serious player these days. AC Milan is shambolic!

  15. Rudyard Says:

Agree the best team so far is Chelsea for me.

  16. andrewB Says:

“What aspects of PES would you like to see editable in the future? Perhaps the ability to create your own stadiums?”

OK, I’m going to get negative first to answer this question- sorry.

The edit mode should NEVER have been scrapped.

Therefore my expectations are that I would have liked the edit mode to have been expanded on what they were in PES6

My expanded edit mode would include:

Even more ‘templates’ for each shirt, short and sock ‘layer’( apparently it’s impossible to make an accurate Arsenal kit in PES 2009).

The ability to put logos wherever we want- including wherever we want on socks – so we can place them on shoulders etc.

Greater selection of Name and Number fonts- or the ability to import our own fonts – this doesn’t have to be actually a font file but we could import an image for each letter of the alphabet and each number from 0 to 9.

The ability to edit boots- with expansion on the PES6 set of templates.

    Return of untucked shirts.

Shirt sizes (eg Rooney looks like he’s wearing a tighter fit many times)- short sizes?.

More variations in socks and shin guards.

Ability to choose – and possibly edit – keeper’s gloves.

Ability to create and edit you own manager character in master league.

Ability to edit National team emblems in the menu – or can you do this already?

I think it would be great to edit you own stadias. If they had a decent selection of real and/or made up stadias in the first place would be nice as well, then perhaps we’d only need the ability to custom build one stadium- our home ground in master league.

  17. Lorenzinho Says:

    Interesting read yet again.

I’m slightly put off by the fact that the Import option is only available on the PS3. I would have had the best playlist.

Anyway. My favourite team so far seem to good old Man Red. They’ve never suited my style in previous PES titles but this year I can steam roll any opposition (Human/CPU) quite easily.

  18. Mroc13 Says:

will uk version work on american ps3? is there a ntsc pal selector

  19. darren_mc Says:

they should put penalty spots back in. Anybody noticed there aren’t any?

  20. maxim Says:

FC Zenit is the best team! Arshavin!!! FTW

  21. maxim Says:

Russia is the best team! Arshavin and Pavlychenko FTW!!!

  22. maxim Says:

Somalia is the best team! Abdul Hamza FTW!!! LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL JOKING

  23. maxim Says:

LIverpool is the best team seriously now and Arshavin

  24. Masi Says:

Personally I don’t like using top teams because I feel its boring and not really much of a challenge winning with the top five sides. So I haven’t really used any of them.

Online looking at the profiles of most players (including the highly ranked player so far) Barca, Chelsea, Man U and Brazil that are the most used sides. I think its sad that its really rare to see good sides like Villareal, Lazio, Aston Villa for example, being used by players.

Because you know when a player chooses a top team, he is most likely going to run to your goal straight from kick-off.

Anyway, there is so much to do offline. ML, BAL and League Seasons are enough to keep me entertained offline for a while.

I love PES2009 mainly because of the pace game. I ant comment on FIFA 09 as I havent played it (and most likely wont) but PES2009 for me is a great and fun football game. A better online performance is my only wish.

  25. Masi Says:

Personally I don’t like using top teams because I feel its boring and not really much of a challenge winning with the top five sides.

Sorry for double post. I meant “winning with the top sides” not “top five sides”. Typo.

  26. lamboz Says:

I cant think of anything to type…..

  27. lamboz Says:

Its just typical of konami to have so many problems with there pes titles (eg ONLINE!!), Are they ever gonna release a pro evo where theres no technical problems within the game instead of always having to release multiple patches for all sorts of problems. even MGO was never right.

Look at games like call of duty and resistance fall of man, they work perfectley online and off.

i’m startin to think seabass and his mates must work in a shed or sumthin!!

  28. Moe Sizlack Says:

andrewB,Why not also edit weather the players have orange juice or tea at half time and what colour underpants they have on,you can even edit what flavour pies are sold at the stadium.

  29. Moe Sizlack Says:

Dan,i totally agree with you about EA. This is a company who would love to destroy every other games company going or buy them out which is the same thing really(RIP BURNOUT)They want everything there own way.I already mentioned before that they are trying to make it illegal for us to trade games in or buy them 2nd hand. They are even trying to stop Konami putting detailed edit modes in PES.They have absolutly no scruples.I hope the credit crunch makes you bust EA,though i doubt we could be that lucky.

  30. pes marriage breakdown Says:

my love for pes is turning into hate. my marriage with pes is virtually on breaking point. i think i will be getting a divorce soon. i feel pes has not been loyal to me. mean time i have met someone else, she’s good looking, looks great and fun to be with. her name is fifa, fifa 09. bye bye pes, it was nice knowing you while it lasted.

  31. adamevex Says:

I can’t seem to find the IWP playlist on itunes. Need some help.

  32. sensible soccer? pes? Says:

sensible soccer was a great game once, till iss came along. konami had made a beauty of a game, brilliant, it was breath taking. it continued with pes, and then disaster struck pes 2008! surely they would not repeat the same mistake with pes 2009, they couldn’t. sadly its not much better, great disapointment. i feel the days are numbered, i dont really like fifa, but i got to be realistic, fifa by no means is perfect, but they are work in progress. where as pes, instead of maintaining the standard are suddenly going sideways. even if they had gone backwards the game would have been still an improvement, because all pre pes 2008 are great games. i used to slate fifa boys, but now i’ll keep my mouth shut. konami you have failed us once again, i am trying to like the game, but i cant? something`s missing. looks like i`ll continue to play pes 6, or i’ll jump ship? konami is sinking!

  33. Pes off Pes 2009 Says:

So here it is, PES 2009 and Konami have released an utterly unenjoyable rigid game which is as frustrating as last years joke of a release, new menus, Atarai2600 era player animations and polished turdesque graphical improvements do not count as next gen level improvements.

You guys really must be worried about Seabass blacklisting you from his group of websites that he throws out early copies of the current game too and the odd press release, because the praise you guys have heaped on the game since its release shows a lack of respect for us and a lack of backbone on your part. I could understand this if the game was near even attempting to be as great as PES once was, but for you guys too call it great translates to “We are prepared to take all our readers for fools by insulting there intelligence and rather be honest with Seabass we’ll kiss ass instead so to stay on his good side and play rubbish early codes of PES which we will fail to expose as the lazy and weak game that it is”.

Before I get called a FIFA fanboy, know this, I dont own a copy, never have, its always been PES for me but Seabass has promised us Overhauls, A complete Lie, I am no longer giving my money to a liar, and Seabass the con-artist should hang his head in shame for so disgustingly deceiving the PES public with these lies.

  34. italia82 Says:

Pes off Pes 2009: RELAX. It’s just a game and if anybody on this site said the game was great then obviously it was great to them. It was their opinion. If you were idiotic enough to buy a game on somebody’s opinion that you don’t know, then that’s your problem. Maybe you should start making your own decisions about your purchases. Enough of the Konami conspiracy theories too. Show Seabass what kind of man you are and quit buying the damn game. I’m sure he’ll lose sleep over it. Boner.

  35. Annoyed Says:

Huge ups to Dan. Thanks for taking the time out of your day to supply us with a fair and unbiased view of PES!

I’m with Italia. People need to stop acting like a jilted lover. I’m pretty sure Seabass has better things to do then get his jollies by “taking advantage” of people’s trust. He is at least working on delivering a good game.It isn’t perfect but it is a huge step forward from 08. No one cares if you’ve been a fan since SNES, that doesn’t give you a right to have unrealistic expectations and gripe about every niggling issue with the game.

  36. passthedutchie Says:

    italia82

    Bravo!

  37. uball Says:

i remember reading somewhere EA’s plan to “stop” piracy and that is by seeing the number of sales of their product comparing the original copy to the pirated copy, if the original copy will succeed over the latter than they will continue making games otherwise they will stop if say, the pirated copies outsells the original. Some comments were made saying so what, there are better gaming companies out there. EA replied saying we will buy those companies and the creators of Call For Duty gave EA a big F-U stating that Call of duty outsells Medal of honor. Kudos to smaller companies.
in my honest opinion(more so), after replaying the PES2009 game at a friend’s house, i can only conclude that the game itself is great fun to play with, i do hope the free official patch from konami will be giving us added extras and some fixes here and there including an option filled editing mode. I don’t like monopoly(not the game but the term), EA can easily do that if they ever wanted to, they’re like Microsoft but Konami is not even Apple so i’m not comparing them either. Monopoly in my country is very adamant and let me tell you, it sucks. Americans always complain about their country and so does English people i’ve meet over the years, yet when they come to visit(or stay) they changed their minds…so i feel in a way, i’m still supporting the underdog which is konami, just hope they realize that they need to step up their game now..hopefully the patch itself contains those steps.

  38. uball Says:

owh, with or without the patch, my hands tell me to pick up the controller and play a game of PES2009

  39. omen to italia82 Says:

ref :italia82, we as pes fans should be angry with the production of pes 2008/2009. this game is tasteless, because you just roll over and admit defeat thats your problem. seabass should come out and say thats it, we no more can produce a decent game of football. when i go to a restaurant, i expect the food to be hot and delicious, not cold and half cooked! maybe if i put a piece of turd on your plate, you may still be satsified?

konami have come to a conclusion that the brand name pes will sell, regardless the game is any good and muppets like you will purchase without complaining. so italia82 rollover and take it like a man?

  40. Hazza (omen to omen to italia82) Says:

But surely you realise that people will stop recognising PES as a respected brand if people stop respecting it? PES didn’t have any god-given right to fame at its creation, so all people have to do is stop buying the games if they are no good.

  41. Rizaldo Says:

I am among those who enjoy playing with a variety of teams! We all enjoy playing with the big teams, but when you win with a minor team, its a wiked feeling! I played as Hull and beat Arsenal 1-0, i was under the cosh the entire game but got a lucky goal! Thats real football!!!!!

I think pes is a legendary game! I am addicted to the Become A Legend mode! Totally amazing!!!! I am in my 2nd season and represented my country AND SCORED A GOAL ON MY DEBUT!!!!

Only improvment needed is the ability to take charge of another team in another league in master league!!!

  42. uball Says:

hazza, that’s as likely as EA telling the consumers not to buy FIFA09. Both brands have a loyal fanbase respectively. what others say should not, in any way, influence you to evaluate the two games. as far as i see it, both are very distinctive from each other besides the graphics and other options, gameplay for Fifa defintely is improving and PES on the other hand, while not bad gameplay, i can’t but help but wish for more. Perhaps it’s to satisfy my PES loyalty throughout the years in PS1 and the earlier times of PS2(beside PES2008).
PES has always gone on top, i don’t mind if Fifa goes to the top because hopefully, Konami will owned up and strapped up and try to go for goals instead of playing it safe and score 1 goal and defend the whole way.
But i say, reserved your judgement on PES2009 until the patch comes out. Graphics for PES2009 may not be the best between the two in the sense of wholesome “3Dness” but the likeness of the players still looks far better.
Sometimes it’s hard to differentiate what fans of both brands say since there are fanboys(whether they admit it or not). Instead let’s judge it on what we like, if you dont like PES, bugger off from this site, if you like it, stay a while and listen to your peers story about their experiences in PES2009(make sure it’s constructive but i think most of us are) but like what one of me pals said, if you want real football, purchase a ticket and go watch the game.
    sincerely,
    a bored man.

  43. uball Says:

    slight correction here.
“what others say should not, in any way, influence you to evaluate the two games”

what others say should not, in any way, influence your evaluation of the two games.

    yup..uhm..english is my 2nd language?

  44. Dunno Says:

    Great read as always Dan…

AC Milan are shocking in PES 09, i have went them in my 1st master league & am struggling to say the least & find Ronaldinho a very frustrating player with play with.

I will wait for the Konami patch to be released to update the Spanish sides & then download an option file for the rest then i will go Athletico Madrid as they are my team.

I think the best team is probably Man Utd as they are strong all over the pitch & i think Rooney is top class along with Ronaldo & Tevez, they really do make a hugely strong attacking threat.

  45. Dunno Says:

Oh and i forgot to mention, i am very happy with the way PES 09 has turned out this year, i think Konami have made big progress since last years effort & am really enjoying the game.

Obviously there are small issues which i think need looked at but it is not stopping me from enjoying playing the game & im sure these things will be addressed by Konami in the near future.

I would just like to say that Dans comments about EA as a company are spot on, we may not like them but we do have to admire what they have achieved & the way the PR dept. have gotten in touch with the competition (PESgaming.com) to find out the views of FIFA 09 which is a lot more than what Konami are doing when we are their biggest followers. They really need to get their act together & start listening to the fans & showing us at least a little respect.

    There, that’s me finished now.

  47. Anonymous Says:

I have PES 2006…and one thing that ultimately makes it better for me than fifa (until Fifa 2008)is the sense of scale. The “normal” tv camera angle is better than fifa’s. In fifa 2003 you could adjust the height and zoom as much as you wanted…and that was awesome…they couldnt get it right in the latter versions…It would be great if you can adjust your zoom and height as much as you wanted in PES…

Another thing of fifa 2008 that sucked, was the ball speed when shooting. It wouldn’t move smoothly and just move like this overly bright shining ball in 3 frames per second instead of 100fps. Dunno if its my 3d card or what…but PES 2006 was far better in this area.

In PES 2006 the replays and in game graphics are close in quality. In fifa2008, they have “false advertising”. They have these great replays, but actual gameply graphics sucks on my same 3d card. When i wanna play fifa2008(which i only did 4 times in more than a year), i have to set my 3d graphics higher…and even then it doesnt compare to the good graphics PES 2006 has. PES 2006 is better programmed and needs less 3d card support than Fifa2008 does. This shouts bad programming on EA’s side…They always seem to rely on the pc systems and 3d cards, instead of good programming.
In the need for speed series, they had great programming for the game called “need for speed porche”. This game needed basically no 3d support to look awesome. But then they got lazy…and relied on hardware to do all their work.

And what is this NEXT GEN thing everyone is hassling about? I dont care wether the game is next gen or not…Some Sega Genesis Games and SNES games are better than some modern full blast graphics games. R-type on SNES wasnt necc worse than R-Type on playstation was it? Relying on graphics alone will not be good enough. There is a lot of other important things behind it.
For example: The menu system in PES…that is far far better than fifa’s. Sure fifa’s look awesome…but its ridiculously slow. You just wanne get on with the game and not look at how great the menu graphics are. Its like EA made it slow for us to admire the graphics? What a joke…In PES you can go super speed and change strategies very fast…not in fifa….

And what is this “This is a PES site, don’t hate PES but hate FIFA” crap? If PES is crap…say it…if fifa is crap…say it. But say WHY it is…have valid arguments. Wont help PES supporters just supporting the game religiously and banning fifa fans…that would just make them win anyways.

We should be UNBIASED in reviewing the games…and so far i am desperately seeking UNBIASED reviews of FIFA 2009 vs. PES 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  52. Real-PES-Fan Says:

#12 F.R.A.N.K. I must agree with you. By week two you don’t even realize that PES doesn’t have the licenses, and to connect to #16 andrewB. If there were even more editable things available it wouldn’t bother me if there were less licensed teams as with the talented editors out there we still get a better result than some of FIFAs licenced kits. As long as Konami keep making the faces of the players look realistic and keep the presence of the players physics felt than I am satisfied. AI and graphics (especially on players movement) can and must be improved. The turning is unnatural. AI is a lot better than previous titles but still with some flaws. I would like for the opponent nearest the ball to do the pressing, NOT the CB when the SB is closest to a SMF in possession near the touch line. And even more movement off the ball. In addition to AI the difficulty level of PES should be higher on Top Player. For me after 2-3 weeks Top Player is too easy. I can outplay the greatest teams with “mediocre” teams like Mallorca (no offense), once in a while this is realistic but not every time. Sometimes it is easier to play agains teams as Man U, Arsenal, Barca and Real Madrid because they play an offensive style of football, than it is to play against lower ranked teams that tend to be more defensive. I like the fact though that it feels different to play against a team at home than playing away. At home your team is more in control (the other team more defensive) as for away it is the opposite.
Getting back to #16 more editable things is what we adore about PES. You see a player in some boots or with some kinds of accessories and 5 minutes later when playing the game, the player looks exactly like his “real life” counterpart. To add to your list andrewB I would like to be able to give white socks to players that play with these ex. C.Ronaldo, Van Nistelrooy and a lot of others (just as I am able to give people tape that play with these). Other things I would like to be improved is PK. FIFA is far more superior at this. You can move the goalie, wave his arms to intimidate you opponent and the shooter has a power bar. They even added the “panenka” the shoot Zidane scored a PK with in the World Cup final. On the down side though every player can make this shoot in FIFA which is typically FIFA! Other additions more possibilities on goal kicks. Maybe a coin toss at the beginning at games or random start so it isn’t the home side that starts the game every time playing left to right. To end this reply I will again agree with #12 F.R.A.N.K. in the long run PES has a longer lifespan since the game play is better. You can play it every day for hours without getting tired of it. And if you want a break you can always go into edit mode :)

  53. ykl Says:

After three days i has tried pes 2009, I would say that, overall im satisfy with the game. I will give 8/10 for this game. Actually i’m only try for master league, but i have bought option file from ebay, all the kits, player names, transfer and team name are correct. i’m really enjoy with that. From the forum i saw a lot of negative comments. Therefore i’m posted my opinion as noteed below.

Good= 1. Gameplay better than pes2008, still a bit fast but the player can’t simply dribble all the way and score.
    2. graphics improved. especially the spectator and the stadium.
    3. The ball physics really good, just like actual ball float on the field . is just amazing.
    4. New manual passing mode (right stick) very good
    5. Shooting style looks great, just like the actual football match.

    Bad= 1. Edit mode= can’t edit for boots
    2. If you play as top player you need at least 15min for halftime session then you will enjoy with the ball build up possesion and create the opportunity of score, but this really get me mad, i need about half an hour the complete one game,,,omg…
    3. the master league really get me bored, the league was not depth enough, if you compared with fifa. after 1 season i played, i just thinking to take charge of another team and looking for new challenge. (may be its limited by licensed issue.
    4. the speed of ball passing just to fast, no matter which team and which player.

Generally, im satisfy with pes2009 (i’m only try master league mode). But i’m really prefer the gameplay of the pes 2009 demo, it look just balanced in between the reality and fun of gameplay. Sorry my english is very poor……i’m from malaysia.

  54. Sha Says:

    PES on PS3 is terrible!

  55. Sha Says:

the gameplay is the worst and im so disapointed. footie games are my passion and i am definitely and PES man all the way but its no good.

Its not as realistic as people have said, certainly not on the PS3 the first touch and responsivness off players needs serious work. The ball physics are good, the animations are good, the graphics are good but the game play is lagging big time. its not very fluent, responsivness of players is terrible and the first touch of players is crazily bad. saying this i have played the ame on the x box and it felt better than the PS3 which is a joke because i hate the x box.

Has anybody else played the game on x box and ps3? if so can u feel a difference in gameplay?

  56. Jan Says:

Can somebody please let me know if Valencia are on PES2009 as i cannot seem to find them.

    Thanks

  57. Sha Says:

yes they are @ 56 but they are not licensed. go into edit mode and find them by looking at the players villa etc then change the name in there

  58. Jan Says:

Cheers Sha, i could have swore i seen them when flicking through the favourite player etc for online mode, but couldnt find them in the spanish league to play with. Is it a case of copying them over to another team, or is there a chance Konami will include them in the update coming out in the next month or two

  59. Flowers Of Manchester Says:

I’ve never met more moaning people in my life!

PES + FIFA are different games, different styles…

Im PES all the way, and every year I’m impressed, already hooked on BAL mode!

Grow up people! What next do you want to edit? The amount of snot that comes out of Carraghers nose when he does a post-match interview?! JEEEESUS…. Its a F*CKING game, if you want that much realism go outside and play!!! And as for online moaners, ok it is bloody annoying, but it doesnt work great – get over it, get some REAL mates!

  60. ste Says:

  61. Hassan Says:

I still can’t believe some of these people. First they complain about things they didnt like in PES 2008 like shooting is too easy and speed is too fast. Then Konami ‘fixes’ them in PES 2009 and now the shooting is too weak and the game is too slow. What’s wrong with you people? PES 2009 is almost flawless. Who cares about the licenses as long as the player is in the right team and looks and plays like he should.

For everyone shooting their mouths off at PES 2009: What would you do to change the game? What is it that is missing?

It can’t get anymore realistic than this.

For everyone complaining about bad goalkeepers fumbling the shots: WATCH A REAL FOOTBALL GAME! Keepers barely catch shots especially low drives and angled shots inside the penalty area.

I’ve already played PES 09 for more than 40 hours now and as a’True’ PES fan here is a review you can really count on.

Speed, Shooting and Gameplay: The game is significantly slower than 2008. But after playing 2009, you really need a tactical approach when attacking which makes the game so much better and so much more challenging. And for all you players getting cheap wins by simply running the field with players like Etoo and Ibrahimovic while having 3 defenders trailing you…..Forget about it. Anoher small feature I loved in this game is the players actually try to stick their leg outs to intercept passes. Dribbling is more fun because it is tougher and you really feel like you’ve accomplished something when you get by someone. High balls are nice as well since they seem to float and you see players pushing each other for it while waiting for the ball to drop. I actually got a penalty call against me for trying to push my opponent in my box on a corner. Shooting is so much more realistic. The player’s position, speed, angle, stats and whether he is under pressure all play a part in making the perfect shot. I’ve scored some screamers from outside but trust me after many attempts. One on Ones are no longer as easy as before which gives the opposition some hope instead of simply expecting to concede. Overall – 9.5/10 (We have to leave a bit of room for growth)

Graphics – Simply an amazing job by Konami. 10/10

Champions League – A nice feature but can live without it.

Become a Legend – Nice to a have a new game mode(I’m sorry but champions league doesn’t count)

NOW the bad aspects of the game.

Commentary – Just a couple of additional lines on the 2008 version. 3/10

Master League – Very disappointed to see that no real revolution was made.

    Overall – 9.3/10 for me.

FOR ALL YOU FIFA BOYS AND PES turned FIFA FAN BOYS: Enjoy your crap game and stop trying to advertise it on this website

  62. Wild Wazz Says:

everytime i take a penalty and push left and square (PS3) it ALWAYS shotts wel wide of the target! this happend to me 3 times wiht ronaldo then i decided to make giggs the penalty taker and tried the same left and square and he shoots the same! every1 misses whoever i take a penalty with!

  63. Rizaldo Says:

maybe your just crap at penalties! lol

  64. Kevvo Says:

Hassan – as long as your happy with the game mate Im pleased. To me this game is well below par, shooting is awful not life like at all, Pes 6 on the xbox 360 is so much better. Yes the graphics are sharper on the PES 2009 but gameplay is woeful. They cant even get the correct sound of a football being kicked so there is no chance the game was gonna be any good. And also since when has Dossena and Skrtel had long hair while playing for Liverpool.. Terrible.

  65. pes demon Says:

Sha – you are a muppet mate if you spend less time moaning like a biatch on here and more time practicing you might actually get good at it, i have PSs and this game is the best yet

  66. Kevvo Says:

pes demon – The best yet??? hopefully you mean on 3rd Gen because they are now where near as good PS2 games, fair enough graphics not as good but gameplay kicks ass, it doesnt feel like you are controlling a robot player with limited movement like PES 2009.

  67. Hassan Says:

Kevvo – Play the game long enough and you will start making the shots you used to make in the previous versions.

Entertainment wise – PES 2008 has the nicest shots since you can really blast the ball but its highly unrealistic and very easy to score.

Pes 2009 is more about being extremely realistic.

  68. Jordan Says:

Barcelona are in my opinion the best team in the game.

Ac Milan are good for attacking football and Ronaldinho seems untouchable on the ball.

I also play as Villareal and Man city who are both quality teams but provide me with more of a challenge

  69. champ23ie Says:

well said no33 we are being ripped off and just accept it as if it were the norm. Its not only his head he should hang in shame.Promises of this promises of that im sick of it.And here is the big joke now.Online have increased the capacity to 2000 at any one time. How the hell can they do this ,when the amount they had ,it wasn’t working then,so if anyone has any ideas please put them my way.W t F dont they fix the online issues first before commiting another 1000 gamers to utter ****.And online we are all stuck on beginner mode as default,so thats the difference between on and offline. The defences and mistakes are abundant.the players freeze on the spot once tackled and there are too many faults to mention. If this was a car manufacturer, there would be a recall and a repair administered, but no,not Konami, they know, read and see comments like this and just ignore them.Casing point PES2008,that was never fixed, why because it was unrepairable,so dont expect this pile of dods to be either.Thank you Konami for ****ing upo a game, which years ago was a very enjoyable title to play. Now it has just become the most frustrating, and most talked about, and all for the wrong reasons

  72. ? Says:

agree with 70, im not startin masterleague or be a ledge until OF is out. Makes it more realistic.

  73. FOOTTIE MAD Says:

And Konami,if you survive another title, please stop making these robotic players that are unable to tackle and could run the 100 meters at record breaking pace,it is unrealistic and spoils the game immensley.Every player is stoppable, otherwise week in week out these teams would be winning, their team mates woul just pass to them from kick off and they would score, its not real.We as gamers are looking for an experience that is close to the real thing,so please take heed.Listen to the buying public or it will only end in tears for you

  74. Dips Says:

Yeah at first the shooting is hard to learn, but you really do start rifling them in from all kinds of angles and you get some great goals.

At least things like closing the player down, pressuring them and closing down their shooting angles all make a massive difference. Being a centre back myself, I am constantly having to use these methods, I am glad I can use them again in this PES.

I do have FIFA, admittedly, and at first I thought FIFA isn’t too bad – after playing the PES 2009 demo – but if you give PES more time, you start to realize that it outshadows FIFA. On PES when you run past a player you feel much satisfaction and when you score a great goal, you genuinely feel the excitement. PES is a solid game and I am impressed and loving it.

Though, I do believe, they modelled this latest PES with the BAL in mind. Every year, on PES, I play fixed player with my cousins and friends, we have 5-7 players all on the same team and in every single other PES, BAL would not have worked very well compared to this one. They ironed out the fixed player mode, cause it was infuriating at times, on the other PES. In this one though, the cpu is quite good to play with.

Oh and I played online once, against a Chelsea user, using Newcastle, I won 3-2. If anyone wants a game some time, or to link up in BAL Mode (When I level up my character) then add me, PSN – ssj4dips in PES – Finaldips.

  75. Dunno Says:

@ Jordan #68 – I find AC really frustrating, Ronaldinho is not the player he used to be & i think Konami have made him that way in PES 09 aswell, im doing a master league with AC (seeing as it’s the only licenced league) & i direct my play mainly through Pato & Kaka.

I just don’t understand all these people saying that PES 09 is awful – it really isn’t, yes it may not be as good as PES 5 or 6 was on the PS2 but that took Konami about 4 – 5 years to get right on one platform & were never going to make it any better on that platform, i am sure in the years to come i think Konami will make PES amazing but it will take time for them to fully utilize the full capability of these machines (PS3 in my case).
At the end of the day, this is still a very good game & im sure all these people slating it will still be playing it.

  76. Wild Wazz Says:

    to comment 63 Rizaldo,

if you play me online (wildwazz) and i get a penalty against you, i wont hesitate to smash it in the top corner!

  77. Kevvo Says:

hassan – Ive played the Pro Evo series since day 1, Ive tried playing the new PES 2009 for hours and in the end it just feels like im the robot playing for the sake of it. Go play the PS2 with an earlier version of the game and you will soon realise what the new version has lost.

  83. passthedutchie Says:

I have finished all editing and have now been playing the game for a week or so. PES2009 in my opinion is an excellent instalment to the series. I admit that it took a while to get to grips with the new style and pace of the game, but, now I have I’m really enjoying it. The edit area is superb this year and although some may say “it should have been included anyway” I don’t care, it’s there now and that’s really all I care about.

Please stop with this “we are getting ripped off” nonsense. I want PES to play like PES, I don’t want an overhaul, why would I, there is no, and has never been, a need for an overhaul, PES always plays well once you adapt your playing style.

If people think being ripped of equates to paying $40 for a years entertainment, then Konami and every other game producer haven’t got a hope!

I’m not interested in FIFA or how it plays! Can you edit kits etc in FIFA? No. That for me is the killer. I would like PES to be completely unlicensed.

At first I thought that the fact that some Spanish teams were unlicensed was a bad thing, it’s great for me because now I am playing a master league with English Championship sides in the 2nd division that were once unlicensed Spanish teams.

If you don’t like it, well that’s too bad, but please don’t tar us all with the “ripped off” crap. I have the game I wanted and you obviously do not, therefore, you have been ripped off and I am a happy consumer and I personally hope that I continue to get “ripped off” by Konami in this way every year!

  95. passthedutchie Says:

Yes I did buy PES2008 and I liked it. I was pissed with 08 edit mode, but, I simply enjoyed the other areas of the game. I hate to say it, but, it is just a game and in my opinion the only football game I care to play. Some peoples glasses are half empty, mine remains half full as I try to look for positives in life rather than stomping my foot when things don’t go my way!

For God’s sake, my government have just given a bunch of banking tossers £2000 of my income tax, that pisses me off, not the fact that a goalkeepers gloves look like gardening gloves!

A couple of friends of mine will be over at the weekend to rehearse for our band. In between rehearsing, we will have a few games of PES and a few beers, this, to me is entertainment and at a cost of £40 (pro rata over a year) + beers. That type of weekend will be repeated a number of times over the coming year, so, you may understand that I do not feel let down at all.

I will now enjoy a years worth of PES09 in anticipation of what is yet to come in future installments and indeed updates.

  96. Gaz Says:

passthedutchie – Superbly said mate. I totally agree with your comments. I too enjoyed Pro Evo 08 and am enjoying pes09. The game just gets better.

Dan – I always read your piece mate, but it really is annoying sometimes on things that you come out with. You keep going on with the fact that EA gave you a free copy of the game!!! SO WHAT!!! you slag Konami off about there marketing department, then how comes WENB got a free copy of the game???? You said that EA is huge, massive marketing etc!! well i think you answered your own query, hence the reason why they can afford to give away games.

You’ve been swayed by EA, because of the freebie, you try to show the rest of us that when you do a review its our choice whether we want to read it!! well i just hope you are totally honest like passthedutchie is.

I look on various PES fansites, but this one is still the best in my eyes, however if its going to become a fifa fansite then why should we continue.

As the great person AG said, “those who get a free gift, enjoy it more than the one they paid for”……..hope this is not the case with you DAN….i can take honest feedback and it would be interesting to know if it really is honest or just another blog to congratulare FIFA…….

  97. FOOTTIE MAD Says:

i hear you passthe dutchie,i guess £2000 is more than a years worth of pro,but thats the way of the weorld at the mo,i lost my job jus over a week ago, looked forward to pro,and to b honest was a bit let down.yes i am still playing it ,but i owe them nothing,my loyalty for istance.it falls way short of the mark, thats just my opinion,i expected better things the way it had been talked up,but inm still praying for some sort of improvement, now, and maybe for the future,if they have one.The online mode is way off the mark, all stiuck on beginner mide, thst is an insult to us all,why should we be restricted as to how we play, surely we have bought the game in its entirety, and should have the freedom to express ourselves thus. But like i said,i am waiting for improvements, and if not,its back to the shop

  98. G Says:

Is it me or does anyone else feel that the PES Online modes lack quality purely for the fact KONAMI use their own sign in ID’s system instead of using the same PSN network that all other games use. The problem could be solved if KONAMI just used the PSN network for online gaming! Anyone else agree?

  99. passthedutchie Says:

    Dan

You had already mentioned the EA thing in last weeks IWP. Whilst I wouldn’t go as far as Gaz, I would ask why you feel the need to keep banging on about it! I will not be reading any reviews of PES and I have no idea why you would even bother reviewing FIFA on a PES site. I, as always, have made up my own mind.

well G something isnt right with tho whole set up,i mean they tried rhis kind of thing last year and it wa sa disaster, this year is not far off,yes in most part the lag has gone but the ganeplay is unresponsive in most part and it isnt skill that wins you games, its luck as to wether teh AI messes up to give you or your opponent to score.ThERE HAS TO BE A BETTER SYSTEM THAN THIS SURELY

  101. willmo Says:

    i agree

  102. G Says:

    FOOTTIE MAD -

obviously this is a problem, if you had MGS4 you will know of the online problems that had too, so there are question marks over that side of things.

I have bought both games this year and it is scary how much the FIFA title has almost caught up. Am i right in saying that not this year but next year is make or break for KONAMI in terms of them absolutely needing to produce a truely next gen game with a next gen engine?

  103. FOOTTIE MAD Says:

I THINK YOU ARE ABSOLUTLY RIGHT,ANY MORE OF THIS GARBAGE AND THATS THE END OF PRO AS WE KNOW IT,I HAVE BEEN THINKIN AS A MATTER OF COURSE,DO YOU THINK ON HERE ,THIS SITE WHEHER THERE IS A GREATER PROPORTION FOR THE LOVE OF THIS SERIES,OR MORE UBATISFIED CUSTOMERS,WOULD BE INTERESTING TO KNOW.AND AS YOU POINT OUTMGS,IS THAT NOT A KONAMI PRODUCT ALSO,SO WHAT DOES THAT SY TO THE PAYING PUBLIC,YOU SEE THIS IS THE POINT IM TRYING TO MAKE.YOU CANNOT EXPECT TO TAKE PEOPLES GOOD MONEY IN EXCHANGE FOR A BAD PRODUCT.LIKE IVE MENTIONED.I WILL WAIT FOR THE UPDATE,SEE WHAT THAT THROWS UP,AND IF NO GOOD ,THIS GOES BACK TO THE SHOP.AFTER I GAVE THEM ALL MY MONEY,NOT HALF,THEREFORE I WANT ALL MY PRODUCT

  104. G Says:

Its also a crying shame that we have to wait for an UPDATE for the game to be playable or be what it should be! I feel for those who dont have access to the internet.

I have always been a PES guy like i said, but this years game feels too rigid, players have bad touches and not enough freedom to turn where you want etc. I still hold hope that i will get used to it.

For me, the next step for konami is to introduce their own motion capturing and this will only be possible by dropping last gen versions and concentrating on the next gen. (Who plays PES on their mobile anyway??? lol)

  105. koko Says:

i have to say pes2009 is not the margin of improvement i expected from pes2008. very little has been done. shooting is harder, but sometimes ridiculous and down to chance on ocassions. players responses are poor they take ages to run for and incept balls and get up for tackles. it’s like i’m not controlling them at times. when i send a player to pressurise they take ages to respond. more often than not run they past the man with the ball with out him doing skills. i’ve had some poor offside decisions for and against me, when players are clearly onside!! plus the referee blows even the man offside doesn’t touch the ball, it gets anoyin cause when you defender intercepts the ball and you can counter the wistle goes after what seems like a millenium. red cards for prfect tackles have ruined a few of my games, mainly people bein sent off against me when they clearly judge the tackle right and it’s not even from behind, nor are they last man, get sent off. if i’m honest they game isn’t that realistic in my opinion, but i will play it all year round because it has the best gameplay out. but this a poor attempt at and improvement. slate if you want for being honest, but know one is a bigger fan of pes than me. i have all my titles, i never sell or give them away on all consoles. i still have my snes, ps1, 2, and 3. and i still have the whole collection from iss and to pes, so go head try tell me this is a great improvement cause you jus ain’t gone back in time enough to see, it not good enough for next gen. you don’t have to go to far back jus pes 5 and 6. slate me as i said, but the likleyhood is i would whoop your ass at the game.

  106. FOOTTIE MAD Says:

they wont stop producing small time because it all brings in the money

  107. F.R.A.N.K. Says:

At Footie mad, whats your problem its a geat game, and even if the patch does not have everythink then you will be able to down load a OF made by other fans (that will defo have what you want). Then you will have ‘all your product’ you skin flint.

  108. Moe Sizlack Says:

Roll on Football Manager 09,cant wait.

  109. F.R.A.N.K. Says:

Yeah i carnt wait for Footy manager 09, should be quality, bet some of the pesimists on here would slate that too given half a chance.

  110. Kris Says:

The only problem with PES 2009 is that the slide tackle just doesn’t work good enough. Plenty of times I have made a last ditch tackle and completley taking the ball and my man has been sent off and I have conceded a penalty for what a superb tackle. Just wrong. Then at the other end I have been awarded 4 or 5 penalties in about 10 matches for the computer to tackle me tidy enough and to my suprise the ref has given me a penalty. Just really annoying and spoiling the experience.

Apart from that the gameplay is probably stepping back in the right direction towards the ps2 days and not the “next generation” pes’s of late.

  111. FOOTTIE MAD Says:

f r a n k , i think you miss my point matei certainly aint no skinflint, its not the accessories that is the problem,i dont care much for all the fancy things, its what already should be implemented in the game now, kits ,boots ,bells and whistles aside.once again Konami fail to deliver a complete product ,but have no problem extracting our money from us,for the delivery of a full product.ThE ONLINE feature is not working properly. But if this is their interpretation of it working correctly, then im more gullible than i thought. If ypou remember last year with PES2008,they tried to tell you your tv,hdmi connection ,and even your broadband was faulty, everything but hold their hands up and say that they have produced a faulty product.Yo tyhis day,is there any admittance of that,no,so skinflint i aint, realist i am

  112. FOOTTIE MAD Says:

and kris, yes im having the same problem too,but it must be your dodgy tv ,or broadband mate.Maybe it must be just us 2 that are having these problems. That reminds me,i must go and check my dodgy connection

  113. FOOTTIE MAD Says:

sorry thatb last nessage applied to koko also

  114. Carl Says:

does anyone know the answer to these questions?

    1. in become a legend, what do the numbers mean at the bottom left corner where usually the tactics thing is?

    2. in master league mode, with the new scouting option giving you reports on every player your interested in, is the percentage thing the chances of them joining you? as for all players bar 3 the percentage has been 0%, even though it says they are extremely unhappy and not being played, yet some are 21% even though there happy and getting played!

  115. koko Says:

konami release a product that only makes slight improvements each year, and i admit it i’m a sucker cause i always buy it. but the truth is i buy it because it’s always the best game play out year on year, showin how far ahead pes has been compared to it’s rivals. i see through fifa presentation and know that what counts is the gameplay for me and pes is always best. i accept that fifa may have caught up in recent years, but it’s still behind in gameplay. we all know if pes had fifa’s licenses fifa would disappear from the football gaming map. the fact that i go to people’s houses and batter them at fifa when i don’t play it and they play it all the time shows me it’s and easy game. someone who is good at and plays pes could beat someone who is good at and plays fifa all the time on a consistant basis. but someone who is good at and plays fifa could not consistantly beat someone is good and plays pes on a consistant basis, they would be lucky to win a game. that why i say fifa is for amauter football gamers and pes is for pro football gamers who like a challenge. but it’s pes lack of improvement which is annoying, and pes is not only better than pes2008 because it’s got less lag and more options. but other than that pes2009 is poor excuse of an improvement, and i expect more for my money as is the only series i consistantly buy. and imo some aspects of the gameplay in pes2009 is worse than pes2008. i don’t know if i need more time or something but i could actually defend better in pes2008. at least i could control my players more freely with less al interference and calculate when to tackle better. you can still run through teams on pes2009, but it feels harder to defend against because the player responses which are slow. my defenders run out for no reason and try to tackle at the wrong time. when defending my players get confused by the attackers even though you read there movements. passing is worse and seriously affects my possession style of play because i aim passes at players in space, but it will go near the opposition or somewhere where my player has to chase it. konami are frauds and sell you the same product, and i don’t fall for it, it’s just nothing comes close. the game is not flawless and obvious improvement can be made, it’s just will konami do it. get rid of this seabass sucker.

  116. Dillip Says:

Seabass is a fukin paki. he haz destroyed the game i onced loved. how dare he.

  117. liverpool legends Says:

erm no offense mate but with a name like Dillip i dont think you shud be calling anyone the P word.

and if u dont like PES fukin do one like. go fuk off to a Fifa forum I’m sure they will love a PES hater like u.

i love PES this year after last years farce.

  118. Dave O Says:

@passthedutchie – well said. Why can’t people just relax about the little niggling details that don’t matter? It’s amazing the things people get so worked up about and miss all the fun in life (i.e. beers and gaming).

  119. Patrick Says:

I live in the US; I recently bought myself a copy of Fifa 09 and I didn’t like it… not one bit. My hunger for football made me buy this stupid game instead of waiting till PES arrives! I have one question to you lucky fellow in Europe: in the Cup option: if you and your buddies are playing a 32 team cup (like a World Cup), you and let’s say, 3 more buddies choose one different team each, you place your 4 teams in different groups and than choose your opponentes randomly: can one of your buddies choose to play against your team using one of the squads that were randomly chosen instead of playing against the friggin’ CPU???? Please say Yes, please, please…!!! My email is: roninduck@yahoo.com. Believe me when I tell you I don’t sleep, I don’t eat, I don’t work just thinking that this option wont’t be available like last year stinkin’ game. In PES 2008 for PS2 there was available, though go and figure… Please help me in this matter and answer my question! PLEASE!!!

  120. Joe Kerr Says:

i like PES alot now i found out how to import your tunez on the PS3 nad i uploaded the DARK KNIGHT soundtrack all the tracks its amazin hearing the Joker why so serious and a dog chasing cars theme in the back ground its epic.

    skeen

  121. pesboy to liverpool legend Says:

its only an opinion mate, no need to get angry, stop being such a drama queen. i have never felt the need to slate pes, but after the 2008 release and the new pes something is not right with the game. i still prefer playing pes 6 on the 360 and will continue to do so. we only show our anger on this site, hoping against hope that konami will listen and sort their act out. clearly the last two pes games have not been up to the standard they have been known to. we dont hate pes, but hate what it is coming to.
i dont know why a few people get upset when someone slates konami, is seabass your girlfriend or somethin?

  122. kieran Says:

how will you have an unbiased review on fifa on a PES website? its not possible and i dont see it happening! i’ve got both and i am honestly stuck between the two. it doesnt make me any less of a PES man but i feel ripped off at the fact that even on a £300+ machine runs on a now less than £40 machines engine!

  123. andrewB Says:

    Hey Guys,

Please don’t judge me for being a geek, but I ordered the Official PES2009 Strategy and Coaching Manual (and accompanying DVD). I thought what the hell, as a family man I don’t spend much on gaming- PES is the only game I’m gonna own for the next 6 months- so I decided to invest a bit more in the game and buy the manual.

Now, I haven’t even got the game yet- it doesn’t come out here in NZ until tomorrow. I have been bagging Konami’s efforts and I am disappointed in the lack of any new innovation….

BUT reading the manual makes you appreciate what Seabass has tried to achieve in this game. Learning about the intricacies of the AI for example relative to their roles and positions is eye opening and does give you an appreciation of the game and make one remember why they ever loved PES.

My only negatives from the Manual have been when I read the Scouting section, the players who are high in the stats are waaaay out of date. Some players like Owen are still ranked in the top percentile while players like Torres, Villa and Aguero have relatively poor stats. ( I realize some people will differ on who the best players in the world today are, but on the whole I think there would be a universal agreement that some players don’t deserve the stats Konami has given them and others have been neglected by Konami)
Perhaps this is because to give the game overall balance you can’t have too many players at real life relative stats, but am I just making excuses for a lazy Konami?

Anyway, my main point is that I have been waiting with trepidation for PES2009 to come out, wondering if I should buy FIFA09 at the last moment, but once I had ordered the Manual last week I was committed. Now I have it and read through it I can’t bloody wait.

Who knows, I might be here on Saturday bemoaning the fact that it plays nothing like the manual suggests, but reading the manual has got my juices flowing.

I am a grown man who can think of nothing but buying my copy of PES2009.

Please feel free to mock me. :)

  124. pro evo soccer Says:

Whats happened to pro evo soccer, played for the first time yesterday. shame konami, you have f**ked up again?

  125. to andrew b Says:

you might be disappointed mate? although some people have enjoyed the experience?

  126. to andrew b Says:

i think you should play both games fifa 09 and pes 2009, and make your own judgement. then again dont play fifa 09, because after playing that, pes 2009 will feel far more worse in my opinion

  127. Pes off Pes 2009 Says:

to Italia82, Your the idiot, nowhere in my post did I state that I bought the game, you clown, you need to read not make assumptions before you call people the most offensive thing you can, “AN IDIOT”, You Sir on the other hand cant read whats in front of you and are happy with sub standard PES, so I mean this when I say it to you, Your an IDIOT.

  128. larry banks Says:

well am really disappointed in this years pro pes2009. guys, the game has incomplete transfers of players to new clubs. great graphics but stupid bookings, impossible to shoot………, guys please don,t ever sell a game as bad as this again, i do believe you ‘r gonna loss fans to fifa for your stupidity.

  129. James Says:

Hey Guys , My Toilet Broke Down And My **** Is Dripping On My Food And It Smells Of ****.

Just jokinh , my **** went in the fifa disc and then i made myself piss on its cd and rub pork in my fingers and i danced to the tune of summer time is all we need ,, ONLY I can **** on my food and chew the tasty minerals of this tasty chewy , but sweet ****

anyway fifa rules and pes is so not good that i brought fifa

    HAHAHA

lets all buy fifa and then get pro and compare it and chuck fifa in the face of konami , ea made pes so good , konami sucks with pes :L isnt that right lads and we need more gameplay in fifa thats all , this is fifa gaming right.

    Ooopss ;L

  130. AVFC1982 Says:

These FIFA fans who hate PES, I wonder if they are hardcore football fans? Because I had both FIFA 08 and PES 2008 and in the end I sold FIFA cos it gets too boring and predictable. The players off the ball are stupid, and the tactical changes make no difference. Also, their version of master league is just very boring. Offer enough money and you always get the player. Also, the players look fat on fifa – whats up with that? PES is the football purists game. FIFA is flash looking but dumb, in other words a bimbo.

  131. fifa vs pes Says:

pes is a great game, but the the latest 2008 and 2009 versions are not that good. fifa has put in a strong challenge in this year again. about 2 weeks ago, for the first time in over ten years i went out and bought fifa 09, just to see what the hype is all about? the game is impressive and to be honest a little bit of adjustment to the gameplay, this game can be great.
although i have never been a big fan of fifa from day one, this game does not seem too bad.
i was a big fan of sensible soccer back in the days, then iss pro came out. sensible soccer was left behind and it was all about iss pro.
i’m afraid pes may well suffer the same fate, if konami do not get their act together.
if fifa can produce a game with a better gameplay(which they nearly have) then i will not hesitate to play that game.
konami get a grip, we demand a next gen game, pes 2009 is not that bad? but it can be so so much better

  132. pes online Says:

same problem as last year and once again fifa boots PES out of the equation

  133. donjuan Says:

just played a match offline ,i was valencia playing against chelsea with the official kits, at wembley stadium in the afternoon, got to the say the atmosphere in the game was breathtaking, playing in the wide camera angle looked like i was watching real football, also having my custom chant akon dangerous was nice aswell.

  134. uball Says:

i think whether we forgo buying PES2009 or not, Seabass must get off his high chair and realize that Fifa is changing, no more the lazy bastards they are but a real challenge. I think PES2009 is good, but it could/should be greater. We all have our opinions but overall consensus shows that we all want our fav football game to really kick the competition off their so-called pedestal. i still believe that if Konami had better marketing dept like EA’s. Most people will rave about PES regardless of how “crappy” it is.
i think those of you who cannot give an honest review or with little explanation for your choice of comment, should refrain from going to this site and posting **** a.k.a FIFAfanboys.
yeah we know, Fifa kicks ass blah blah blah..yeah yeah..you were a PES fan before..blah blah blah..look..if there is one thing most of us PES fans left here cannot do for you is this, WE CANNOT GIVE A DAMN..so get off our site b1tch..you either love it or hate it..Fifa with all it’s money couldnt beat PES for quite a long time so in a way, the underdogs bite back..hopefully PES will do it with a bigger bang same time next year.

  135. Highaimer Says:

Im a long serving PES fan and used to spit on the fifa lovers, but this year fifa 09 offers a rather realistic interpretation of the modern game. players actually move like their real life counterparts whereas PES 2009 players are built on the same base models just with picture framed faces. In My opinion Fifa have come a long way but PES 2009 is more enjoyable but just takes a little time getting used to. Konami put all their effort into MGS4 this year as that is Ps3’s most innovative title to be released this year and wil become a classic. As for PES 2009 its a serious let down ultimately. They havent even made sure all this years champions league teams are available so we can replicate this in game. BAL is a good addition as it is challenging trying to be that special player. However, i think the edit mode is the same as last year, just a different layout.
PES 2009 has failed to capture the realism of the game as if you think how we turn in real life in oppose to how they turn at 45 and 90 degree angles in pro with the ball unrealistically close to their boot. don’t even get me started on the first touch…
The only positive points so far are that the tempo and improved AI increase the necessity to be more tactical in your approach play in orde to create space/chances. basically i like the face that the COM can finally beat me again on Top Player!

  136. GATTUSO Says:

i bought fifa and the game is not thaaaaaaaaat good as some people says anyways it sucks that i live in usa and i will get my pro evo next wensday and let me tell u that pro evo will have to suck baaaaad to be a worst game than fifa

  137. apology to pes Says:

pes is back to its best. played the game last nite again, since then my opinion has changed somewhat? previously i have slated this game on this site for being poor, but playing it several times now, i feel the game is not that bad after all. my only wish is that they can sort out the online side of things.
give the game some time and eventually you will start to see the real pro evo!
sorry fifa, pes is still the game for me.
once again apologies for slating this game previously

  138. james Says:

Hey can i get some help with the IWP playlist? I can’t seem to find it on the imix store from apple.

  139. madzie Says:

not having all the transfers sorted is interfering with because if i do them myself it will not effect the online so please let me know when the pes content is due for the ps3?

  140. Yota Says:

    FADA OLLA DORRA OLISAS.

  141. Anonymous Says:

can any1 post up the playlist from itunes on here?

  142. Sutty Says:

“The quality of the edit mode cannot be questioned this year” You must be joking, right? It’s definately better than PES2008, but PES6 still walks all over it.

I agree that some aspects are a step in the right direction, particularly the face scan, even if I can’t make a player look like me, he looks hilarious, lol. The image editor is good, but the fact you can only add one to each kit is annoying. I still feel that the kit editing options are limiting, I could create some great looking kits in PES6, but I just don’t seem to have as much freedom here. And where are the editable boots, my god!

I’m liking the game more and more each time I play, but it still feels a step back from PES6. Become a legend mode has the potential to be amazing with a little polishing next year, at the moment the AI is just shocking.

  143. AN EX PES FAN Says:

PES09 SUCKS SO BAD!!! HOW COULD THEY MANAGE TO DESTROY THIS GAME???? WAKE UP KONAMI!!! FORGET TRYING TO MAKE PES LOOK GOOD AS FIFA WHILE GAMEPLAY IS BEING LEFT ASIDE!

  144. Anonymous Says:

Does anybody know when updates for transfers etc will be available on the xbox 360 and wer it will be available from?. I love pro evo but just cant get into the game until this is updated, i have to say i was seriously disappointed that such a good game was ruined by such carelessness. i was even goin to convert to fifa over this but luckily for pro evo fifa convinced me not too lol
