IWP League Champion 2008: Martin Ginnelly (River Plate)
Welcome to this week’s Interfering With Play. Unfortunately, the flu bug that hit me hard two weeks ago caught up with me again late last week, resulting in another bed-ridden weekend, which is both counterproductive and very boring indeed. The absence of a laptop was enough for me to miss a great deal of the weeks goings on online, and this morning was the first opportunity I have had to read the comments and e-mails from the past six or so days. I would quickly like to pass a comment about PC gaming before I move onto the article. Whilst I fully appreciate a top gaming PC can cost upwards of £2,000, bit parts and a graphics cards to turn a three-year-old PC into one capable of playing the current crop of games are a lot cheaper overall. I would argue that items such as controllers and games also come across cheaper when being purchased for PC, making the overall process of playing games on your PC cheaper than outlaying for a next generation console. Of course, if you wanted a specific ‘gaming’ PC then you would spend a lot more money on the hardware and the costs will be considerably more, but PC gaming is still the easiest way to access and play the newest games on the market, albeit maybe not in as high quality as the developers intended. Hope that clears it up, and lets move on with Interfering With Play.
“Papa, Can You Hear Me”
I’d like to start this week by acknowledging the contribution of one Simon McDermott in last week’s column regarding the option of combating the ‘Barca boys’ in online gaming matches. For those out the loop, or who never play online, on both Fifa and PES, when playing against a variety of opponents, the majority will pick to be Barcelona for the simple fact they have the four or five quickest players on the game. Even after beating these Barcelona boys, it is still very disheartening to play another match against the same team, albeit controlled by a different opponent, who try and do the same thing, with varying degrees of success. Fifa has a huge selection of teams, whilst PES has a fair amount, yet if Konami or EA were using online matches to judge team usage, their research would tell them its simply all about being one of four or five sides. Not very realistic, and to be honest, a little boring when playing against the same team four or five times a night.
Last week I brought this topic up, and whilst some interesting points were raised by e-mail, Simon’s offering of a solution was both well structured and practical. He is an individual who provokes a fair amount of criticism on this site, but when his or any views are we; thought out, backed up and open to suggestion, it is only fair they are acknowledged as such. The option of a ‘fantasy football’ mode is something I could really get on board with. Having a limited amount of money, you could buy a team, which would result in losing out on some huge stars to compensate for consistency, or gambling on the big names and being weaker elsewhere. Of course with Konami so far behind in the online department this may seem a long way off, but increasing diversity within the online game is something that needs to occur.
The problem though will always remain the same, especially if it ends up with the varying points system for using different teams. For example, winning a game online as Barcelona or AC Milan could be worth one point, but winning with Hull City could be worth five points. The problem here will simply be people playing with Barcelona five times to get those points as opposed to playing with Hull once. Perhaps a negative effect should be brought in, whereas losing with a top side drops you more points than losing with a lesser side. At the end of the day, just like with any online game, gamers are going to play it to win, and if a certain aspect greatly increases your chances of winning, you will have that aspect working for you. The IWP League will continue to ignore the cry of the top clubs, and for the 2009 season, will still exclude all the major European footballing superpowers.
“I’m Down On My Knees”
As many of you know I game on PS3, and do not own a 360. I have limited access to the system, and have a number of mates who use them or play on them, the majority of whom are more than happy with the console. At this time, the 360 v PS3 debate is dormant, and intend for it to stay this way, but a huge observation has occurred to me over the past few days. I have spent the majority of this weekend drifting in and out of sleep, all the time in bed and the majority of the time with the TV on. I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed the sheer volume of adverts for the X Box 360 and its variety of games. In fact, the majority of multiplatform games end with the 360 Jump in catchphrase on screen. Is it just the fact I have been subjected to more TV than usual due to illness or is X Box marketing exceptionally aggressively this festive period? The adverts must appear 7:1 for every PS3/PSP advert and even 4:1 for every Wii/DS advert. Anyone who has noticed this let me know in the usual ways.
“So Now, The End Is Near”
Just a quick reminder the initial registration period for the IWP League 2009 closes a week from today. If your interested in taking part in the online competition, which this year will be bigger than ever, please get in touch via e-mail citing your name, age, location and console. E-mails will be sent out over the Christmas break, with the league tipped to begin in February. All being well, the league will feature its own sub site, have some cool gadgets and features and perhaps even the option of a prize for the winning participant. Plus, like Martin, you will be forever etched into the IWP Hall Of Fame. Entry, as with everything to do with this site and IWP, is free and there will be a second window mid January to sign up, for those who may be getting their consoles as Christmas gifts. This first window basically gives me an idea of the demand for participation and the option of including a first and second division.
“Somebody Call A Doctor”
The song, for those old school emo’s out there is a little classic My Chemical Romance, prior to the success of Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, but the topic is definitely one for the football fans out there. Upon my (now much publicised) bed-spent weekend, I tuned in to a great deal of NFL on Sky Sports. Granted, had I been well, my patience would have got the better of me but with nowhere to go and nothing to do, I really started getting into the games. For those who care I am a Cowboys man, as I just like the sheer arrogance of T.O. But upon feeling better, my unsurprising first port of call was Madden 09 on my PS3, with a much deeper understanding of the sport and how to play the game.
Now I have raved about Madden before and how its presentation values eclipse anything on any other sports franchise, perhaps bar 2K Sports’ NBA offering, but the one feature that has been drilled into me more so over the last couple of games has been the Injury set up. For those who haven’t played the game, the following will just allow you to appreciate what is possible within gaming and what Konami and even EA Sports for Fifa need to start looking at. Upon a player being injured, the camera cuts to a very shoddy looking big screen image of the word INJURY. Think Fifa 95 when you scored a goal, and you wouldn’t be far off the mark. This simply acts a loading barrier though, as after a couple of seconds, the camera pans down in HD quality to the fallen player. Then, the impressive stuff starts, a CSI style screen pops up and zooms in on the injured body part, showing and explaining what is wrong in the style of the TV Show. Ligament damage, muscle tears and bone breaks all are accurately depicted, along with text to indicate issues such as back spasms, bruising or bleeding (as showing bleeding could make the game require an older age rating). Upon explaining the injury, it gives a estimation how long the injury should take to heal from, be back soon, meaning the player will be available in a matter of minutes, to any number of weeks, resulting in a replacement needing to be brought in.
All of this is then cross-referenced to likeliness of reoccurring injuries within a season, and realistic animations showing the player nursing that particular body part when leaving the field. It’s a site that oozes both dedication and research, but really adds to the in game atmosphere, especially as you nervously wait to see the injury report of your quarter back, only to find out he needs stitches and will be back soon! Why this feature hasn’t been implemented into football gaming yet is unknown. Football Manager has a huge injury database that proves this aspect of the game is just as important as any other, yet both Fifa and PES continue to acknowledge holding your hamstring as the only injury every footballer ever gets. Since the introduction of on screen physios and stretchers on ISS 98 for the N64, the injury situation has been the same, and surely it is time it was improved. Views, as always, greatly appreciated.
“I Can Do It Better”
Finally, my apologies must go out for the lack of comparison article available. Due to my situation, I simply haven’t been at the computer, and therefore just not been able write anywhere near what I wish to express. I will try very hard to make it available for next week, hopefully before next week’s article. Next week also sees Interfering With Play’s final edition for 2008. As is tradition, following 50 weeks of solid writing each and every Tuesday, Interfering With Play closes down for the two ‘Christmas’ weeks, in other words the 23rd and 30th December. I think the best way to liven up online games would be to say that you can’t choose any of the 5 previous teams you have played with, as well as integrating the points system as Dan suggested. Cos the trouble is, people sit there for weeks with the one team and get the tactics down to a T… and thats when its not a level playing ground.

RE: The adverts – Maybe because it’s in the run-up to Christmas and the Xbox is the cheaper console, Microsoft have started an aggressive marketing campaign recently? Also, jobs at Sony are going to be cut 5% (I read today) so maybe Sony are waiting it out and seeing how the ps3 sells over Xmas?

mate the points system on pro online already happens, if you go a lesser team than barca and lose you dont lose alot of points, i went hull against a division 1 opponent he went inter, it was a draw, i got 5 points, i also lost to the same guy and only lost 2 points when i went the famous glasgow rangers and he was manure,
please wake up and play the game and realise that its getting worse by the year,and shut down this site as its as piss as the game, thanks

I don’t understand this. In PES6 you could enter tournaments online where you only had a certain amount of points to spend on 3 teams, so you couldn’t afford to pick Barcelona 3 times meaning you’d have to mix it up a bit.
I wish they would bring this online element back.

They should bring back the random selection match option and put it online, but I think they should have the teams ranked A to D – Teams like Barcelona, Inter, Chelsea etc are A and teams like Wigan, Hull etc are D. Then out of the 4 teams you select it has to be one from each rank and just get a random selection of good and bad players.
Think many things are in need of a change on current ‘next gen’ footy games. Injuries could def be improved , as well as offsides. When it’s a close decision why not have linesman flag and occasionally ref wave play on? It would certainly make decisions more exciting!
As for Xbox adverts on TV at min, I totally agree. I can’t believe how many times I’ve seen them in last few weeks. Almost every ad break has at least one Xbox 360 ad. They’re really pushing the marketing this year that’s for sure.

Cheers Dan, good article. I too have noticed the huge amount of Xbox 360 adverts on TV. Whenever you see a new game coming out, even if its a game that until recently was playstation exclusive like GTA, all of the adverts are for the 360, its almost like Sony have stopped producing adverts, or as you say Microsoft are just going into over kill mode.
To go back to the subject of the online modes for future additions of Pes, I think Konami should structure the system something like this: You start of by selecting the multiplayer option on the menu screen this takes you to more sub menus of Online,Lan,private games. In the online sub menu there is: Ranked match, unranked, leagues, tournaments, custom games, challenges, fantasy mode, Pes shop. When playing ranked games you could apply a similar system to what FPS games use, where as all of the teams are not available to you, until you unlock them by gaining experience points by playing matches. In the ranked game sub menu you would have: same level, class 1,2,3,4 or A,B,C,D, ect , and challenges. So basically you would either play people at the same level, or depending or your class you could choose to play players of a much higher level or lower level. So lets say you are a low ranked D player and you chose to take a chance a play a ranked A player, now not only would the rank A player have more experience, but he would also have more teams to choose from, creating an even bigger mismatch. Now if the ranked D player manages to beat or draw against the higher ranked player he would get bonus exp points, which would unlock more teams, push him closer to the next level, and even give him trophies such as ‘Giant Killer’ or ‘Holding Your Own’, for a draw, there could even be a giant killing table showing who beat who and by how much. This would also result in the higher ranked player loosing exp points and taking away from his overall global ranking.
Now if the global ranking table is decided by points and not wins, draws, loses, then points is what you are after and not just wins. So you hugely penalise people for using the same team, to the point that the more they use this team the fewer the points available to them are, to the point that its not even worth being this team any longer. You could apply this in way of a meter that slowly fills the more you use this team, the higher it gets the lower the points available. The way you would bring this meter back down again would be to use different teams, and for every different team you use, the meter of you favourite team slowly drops, meaning that people would have to experiment. Also if the player using the lower ranked team loses he gains no exp points meaning that if he continues playing opponents who are higher ranked and losing, they will be slowing their own development and force them to play opponents of a lower level. The giant killing trophy could not only be linked to class, but also to the team you choose, so if you chose a team that is much lower in stats than your opponent and win, then you could still win this trophy, but your class at the time of winning it will also be displayed and this will dictate the amount of bonus points available.
Under the challenges sub menu there would be a list of achievements to complete during matches to gain extra trophies and points. This could be from anything like scoring from a 50 yard dribble, your first hattrick, scoring with a defender, scoring from a freekick, 50th goal with Ronaldo ect. The scenarios here are virtually limitless and Konami could even add more over time via DLC.
In the leagues and tournaments sub menus you could have the dates, times, class’s, of these competitions and also the trophies and points available for doing well in these competitions. This would show the points available for winning the competition, for coming, second or third and even bonus points for the highest goal score, overall best player, best defender, striker ect. If you make the points available for winning these tournaments high then this will encourage people to take part in them to improve their overall global ranking. These competitions can be anything from international, club, fantasy team, master league teams ect, and more of these could also be added by Konami over time with more points up for grabs.
In the custom games sub menu, this would be a chance for you to create tournaments ect for you and your friends to take part in online and also your online friends.
In this editor there would also be the option to post these tournaments online and they would either be open to just your private party or open invitation. Of course players entering will want them to be worth while, so if you created a points entry option where every player entering pays a points entry fee and these fees are added together and given as the points prize at the end of the competition, almost like playing poker with your mates, but instead of sacrificing money your sacrificing ranking points, with the chance that you will win everybody else’s in the competition.
Fantasy mode: This would as I mentioned last week be a mode like a fantasy football league where you start of with a points allocation and either choose a balanced team with these points or gamble on some big name players combined with mediocre players. This would effectively be an online masterleague mode, with the main difference being that there is infinite amounts of each player available, so as soon as you have enough points or money you can buy a player for his asking price. To build up your fantasy team you would use it to play and win matches to accumulate points, there would also be fantasy league points as prizes in other game modes. You will be able to use your fantasy team in all competitions or even in online competitions set up entirely for this mode. This mode could allow you not only to create your own team, but your own stadiums, coaching staff, gate fee’s, medical teams, this would mean that buying better coaches ect would have an effect on the developement of your players, better medical staff would effect the injury status of your players ect, this would add a football management element to the game.
Basically all elements of the online mode will offer you enhancements for your fantasy team, by playing the other modes and using fantasy points gained to develop your fantasy team. You could even have a store house that would work like garages like in Gran Turismo where you would have the option to store your current fantasy team and build another one, with different stadium ect. In this mode you could also have sponsors like in Fifa and the better your club become the bigger the sponsors available.
Basically the possibilities are endless and I think something like this would add much more depth to the online experience, and end the age of players being the same team over and over again, because in the end your fantsay team, like your master league team will always end up being better than say Barcelona or Man utd, and even if people choose to only use their fantasy team over and over again, everyone’s fantasy team will be different, resulting in a different experience every time.

I agree with Madden being an amazing in-depth game. Little touches like players’ jerseys getting muddier as the game goes on if it’s raining add to the experience, and show that it wouldn’t be difficult to impliment into pro evo.
But the Cowboys? Get a proper team, like the Giants.
I reccommend amr zaki as he is amazing and cheap, also look for ribery id you r wit and english team as he has no club
