Interfering With Play – Tuesday 24th November 2009

Welcome to this week’s Interfering With Play. I will like to quickly start by addressing the below post, and that the first official Konami update for PES 2010 will be released on the 24th November 2009. That means that by the time most of you will be reading this, the update will already be installed and therefore you will have some idea of what exactly Konami have been working on for the past few weeks. If last years update is anything to go by, expect the aforementioned changes to the Champions League teams and a 99% accurate transfer update (there will still be one or two out). I will be very surprised if the game play, online mode and any other game modes will differ from their current state. What it is important to remember, however, is that to play against the majority of people, you will require to download and install the update, which can be done by going into System Settings on the main menu, and then selecting Download. I am sure many of you will leave your own comments and I will report back my findings on the update as of next week. This update also means I will be recommending potential option file downloads, to have all your kits and logos looking bang on. If you have been in any way involved with developing an option file, and would like me to promote your work, please contact me via e-mail, using the address at the end of the article. With this said, lets crack on with this week’s Interfering With Play.

“You’re A Heartbreaker”

I will openly admit I have not played anywhere near enough PES 2010 this week, nor Modern Warfare 2 for that matter. Whilst I have been busy, this is not the reason, nor have I gone off either game. I use this opportunity to warn all Playstation Three owners about the dreaded Yellow Light Of Death! If I am 100% honest, I hadn’t even heard of this problem 7 days ago. I always looked smugly down on 360 owners safe in the knowledge that Sony’s console had very few known technical issues and the Red Ring Of Death had ruined many of my mates X Box 360’s over the past 2 years. However, apparently there is a similar issue involving the older models of the Playstation Three, and in recent months, it is seemingly becoming more common.

I am not sure if this issue affects the PS3 Slim, but I have had my PS3 since launch day. I picked up a 320GB hard drive off eBay about 18 months ago and have had nothing but praise to heap upon the console. I regularly played for hours at a time, either alone or with mates, both online and offline, all with minimal problems and maybe a couple of crashes, most likely due to corrupt gaming data. Then on Thursday of last week, I turned my console on, only for it to turn itself off 30 seconds later. Then again, the same event occurred. I left the console, and went to work, only to return and now find that the console doesn’t even switch on. It beeps a few times, the power light turns yellow and then nothing. I can not access my files, the hard drive, nor most importantly get the Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 disc out of the drive! Repair bills for the system are in the region of £150 to £200 plus postage, which asks the question, would I just be better buying a new system?

Having done my research, I believe the problem relates to overheating. I am not big on the technical side, but if certain parts of the console get too hot for a prolonged period, circuits can be damaged and become unusable. There is a simple way to prevent this, apparently, the USB fan. Upon purchasing my PS3, I laughed at the concept of a fan that you plug into the PS3 to cool it down if you used it too much. I considered myself (at the time) a very casual gamer whose PS3 was rarely on for long periods of time. However, the console had become my CD player, DVD player, Jukebox, Music TV Channel and gaming console over the 30+ months I had it and as a result, it was spending a lot of time on.

I therefore urge anyone who has an older version of the PS3 to seriously consider investing in one of these fans. If you haven’t already, there are a tremendous range of games available at the moment, and having them sitting in their cases unplayable is a truly heartbreaking experience. It is too late for me now, and I am going to have to dog into my pockets and buy my 2nd PS3, but I would hate for people to have the same problem. If you have experienced a similar problem, please feel free to share your pain, and if you have anything that may help my plight, I would be more than grateful for your e-mails!

“Kick It, Old School”

Because of the above mentioned dilemma, I decided to hit back and take on some of the gaming challenges from yesteryear. My attic is full of old, battered consoles and video games, and following a brief stint on Sensible Soccer, I came to rest on using an Emulator to play the Playstation classic, ISS Pro Evolution Soccer 2. Having sat playing for a couple of hours, I must say there are a number of issues that can be looked at. Firstly, it is incredible to think that back in these stages, the Konami franchise restricted you to playing as only International teams. It seems mad that nowadays, maybe one in thirty matches I will play as an England or a Belgium, but my go to teams are always club ones. Yet back in these days, there was no choice. Do not get me wrong, on my day I could give anyone a game with my Croatian machine, with Suker and Boksic being borderline unstoppable on their day, but it makes you realise just where the franchise began, and where it really all started.

Secondly, as with PES 2010, I actually found myself struggling to put the controller down! Every match had that one more game feel, and there was no complaint about the AI just running past me. I had to work hard for my openings, keep patient and break teams down, and if I didn’t, I would lose matches. I will hopefully have my PS3 back in a few days, but I am thoroughly glad I spent the time playing ISS Pro Evo 2, because its game play was as good for its time as anything, football game or otherwise.

The final point though, was one that dawned after the sentiment had worn off. After I stopped looking at the game as 10 years old and comparing it to today’s title. With all the nice things said above, there is no way I would PES to revert back to that game in any way shape or form. The term evolution is one that has occurred many times on the forums, and the argument that PES has evolved as much over the past few years. But looking at the bigger picture, and seeing where the game actually has come from the evolution is huge. If you are into emulation, please get in touch with me, as I would love to speak to a few people about a Playstation 2 emulator, for side project I am working on.

“Why Don’t You Come On Over, Referee”

After I mentioned it briefly last week in IWP, I think it’s only important I follow up with the views raised about the referring on PES 2010, especially in the light of the Henry incident from last week’s qualifier against the Irish! I think it is important that on a football game, occasionally the ref gets it wrong, as a robotic ref would spoil the game. There have always been times on PES where you have got away with a debateable tackle in the box then seen your star striker red carded for winning the ball! However, this years game seems to be almost too lenient, meaning it is more acceptable to play a ‘rough’ style of game. I know for the purists out there, the people who like to spray the ball about, this feature has angered you, but finding a happy balance between physical and fair is still not present.

My first suggestion would have been to have a number of sliders, similar to those from the tactics, to determine how you want the referees to govern the game. A strict referee would blow for a lot, a lenient not so much, and then there would be varying degrees in between, which would be related to yellow cards and sendings off. Furthermore, there could be settings for speed and positioning, which would in turn see the ref occasionally give throw ins the wrong way, or even miss a challenge because their view was impaired. The complaint with this would be you could almost fix the game, and then two player games would be more tailored towards whoever had the say over the referring stats.

This lead me on to why not have referees, in a similar way to we have players. Each referee could have a number of stats, which would relate to their on pitch performance, and even allow for stats to be tracked, seeing which referee has given he most cards, penalties etc. I know there was a feature in previous years whereby the refs were named before each match, however I don’t feel the personalities changed too much, and the decision making was very much like for like. I can understand why Konami would be reluctant to use real life referees, as any poor ones would be highlighted, but 20-30 fictional referees from different countries would be just the ticket. I don’t expect this to happen any time soon, but it is something I would like to discuss further. Therefore, if you can think of any useful attributes for a referees on PES (realistic please!) leave them in the comments section below. I will further address the issue next week!

“Closing Time”

The application period for the IWP League 2010 is now closed. Over the next few week’s, I have the thankless task of working through the hundreds of applications, finding a final number of people to play in the qualification rounds. This will be to determine connection speed, match quality and overall player ability. I am leaning towards running a European and UK League this year, with more information to follow in a couple of weeks.

Over the next 48 hours I will be closing the application form. If you are interested in taking part, please e-mail me with your details, and I will put you on the waiting list. However, those people who have filled the form in will get priority on any places. The league will kick into action in the first third of 2010, so keep your eyes peeled in your inbox for the latest news.

That’s your lot for this week. As I said, I have been shot down by the Yellow Light Of Death, please take precautions to at least read about the problem, especially if you own a ‘classic’ PS3 (mine was the old 60GB model).  interferingwithplay@hotmail.co.uk is the place to direct any e-mail to, and please leave your views on the downloadable content, along with anything else you have read in this article.

Thanks for Reading

Ive had no penalties or red cards in 128 games. Thats not lenient thats just blind. I should of had 15-20 penalties which were blatant fouls. You can hack away as much as you want in your own area because you know nothing will be given.

My first 40gb ps3’s bluray went, which Sony replaced with a refurb. Then last Wednesday I decided to play pro online after a week of mw2. And what do I get a shut down and yellow light of death. As it was out of warranty I was not gonna play £150 for another refurb. Next day followed a guide on YouTube and 1 hr later I fixed it myself. Fingers cross it last

  5. MagicaRoma Says:

That is really sh*tty to hear about your PS3,I would be gutted & so frustrated if it had happened to me..
Have bought a van for cooling down for the 360 2 months after I bought the console as I was very frightened for the RROD & knock on wood: The 360 is working perfectly for me & if the cooler doesn’t help (don’t know that), it certainly doesn’t harm, so I’d recommend anyone using it out of preventian.

And I couldn’t resist using the opportunity spraying a little salt in the 360-PS3 debate. THIS quote is from the IGN review of Assassin’s Creed 2… So if you have a PS3, I’d think twice before buying the game (and that is not the FIRST and definately LAST time that the 360 version is the better of the two, as PS3 seems to get mostly port due to programming being too complicated & expensive and the income obviously less than the sales for 360):

IGN.COM: “In terms of engine quality, however, the difference between the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions is literally night and day. Starting with the shocking difference in contrast and colour depth, the Xbox 360 version’s high-dynamic range lighting is more intense and casts deeper shadows and renders a darker night. In our direct comparisons between the two games, the PS3 version looks noticeably flatter and more washed out, detracting from the ambience.

The PS3 version also suffers from a lower texture resolution, which affects everything from facial details (you can see freckles and pores on the 360, but faces, lips and hair looks almost universally blurry on PS3), to wall and ground textures, leaves and particle and debris effects.

I know it’s almost passé to rag on the differences, but it really does surprise us how large the gap between the two versions is. It does begin to affect the gameplay too when the PS3’s juttering and screen tearing starts to rattle the frame during action sequences involving multiple characters. Hopefully Ubisoft can address some of these concerns with a patch as soon as possible, but at this stage, the PS3’s version ONCE AGAIN LACKS POLISH.”

  7. Neo NiGHTS ® Says:

Konami probably never heard of ‘if ain’t broke, don’t fix it’. There were things that worked pretty well few years ago and those changed.
-> I remember PES3 where you could score goals with more different players besides your forwards. You could score goals on corners with your defenders… (BTW, why you cannot set play the corner kicks is really beyond me)
After PES3 you could score 100 goals on a season, but 90% of them would be scored by your top player, 10% by your midfielders and close to none by a defender.
-> In previous versions as too easy to dribble around like mad, now it’s nearly impossible to dribble at all! Doesn’t matter if you’re playing Messi, simply cannont dribble. Annoying, really.
-> An then, the worst of all (in PES10): the refs!
Ok, it was WAY TO EASY to get penalty kicks awarded on PES9 but… why Konami went to the opposite route and now made almost impossible to get a Penaly at all? And why did they change so much the way a penalty is taken?
It gives me impression that the guys who make the game don’t actually PLAY it. I mean, it’s pretty obvious how unbalanced the ref is in the version and cannot stop thinking ‘why did they leave like that?’.

OTOH, your solution for the ref (with sliders, stats) is REALLY nice! Hope we can see that someday!
Remember the very first Internation Superstar Soccer on Super Nintendo where there were three different refs, each one with a different style?
    That was nice!

i always maintain xbox is better then ps3
yes you have blueray … after watching my first blueray movie i didnt notice much difference
the point is xbox has been out longer is so much cheaper and sony are such rip of merchants
i rememeber i had to buy a memory card for ps2 before the new consoles came out and it was still full whack of €40.

i have xbox 3 and half years and am on my 3rd machine but you know what if it breaks and is not under warrenty i can just buy the acade machine for cheap

    PS sucks

p.s i hate you henry you ruined our chances :( come on england or spain to win

  14. torrent Says:

I dont think this patch will affect the online problems. theyve had 3 years to address this.

They didnt address it last year with a patch, so i dont think they can address it this year.

Frankly i dont think they have a clue, and their Pr is rubbish.

Telling us all this crap about ‘dedicated online team’ etc.

Where is there online team and where is there any statement on the online issues from Konami.

I dont think we wanted the new Japan Kit, but rather the issues that need addressing.

Do they cater more for the Japan market than the european??

We had the problems with the euro demo, i am beginning to wonder seriously.

I feel a bit better now after that rant

  15. prabs Says:

    @14

u mite be sadly right , that they care more for the japanese market than they do for europe, hence why huge number of their sells were made in japan.

I mean …why do we want a new japan kit ?

why not some of the teams who dont have proper kits at all ?

online is awful compared to fifa.period.

this patch i feel is quite ridiculous , im thinkin why?

most of the people who brought the game have updated the teams by now anyway, and and option files have done most of the kits ,
so whats the point in bringing this out. ISNT this summit they shud of done back in october. ??

seriously feels like we have 80 per cent finished game , and along with konami us fans are doing the rest of the 20 per cent work with option files and editing.

however im glad they put that update the other week to prevent edit data being loss. one decent step in the right direction.

    AND ABOUT THE YLOD
DON BOLAS MY FREIND BEEE CAREEFUL !! WWITH THE FAN ! ive got one from argos ,

i used it was cool BUT .BUT ive heard it can do more damage than good , i read this on yahoo answers, others were intrested in the fan m, but some said the fan can effect the internal ps3 fans if it is the usb attach on one. and worsen the ps3.

ive had ylod problems, im investing in SLIM as it takes less energy and less chance of overheating. BUT
    DO THIS

keep the ps3 in a good open area not closed compartment,
    also stop dust
HOOVER IT , AND KEEP IT DUST FREE , hoover carefully the dust from the vents.I hope it works , im on me 3rd ps3 and are doing these precautions now, weather it will work , time will tell.

  16. christos21 Says:

Guys the update is only for the transfers of the players. There is no patch fixing anything.Just a question:im playing the quick match in the online mode and there is no button delay after the patch on 17th,just a little lag,is this happening only to me or everyone who plays quick match mode??????
I forgot to say that at the lobbies every 7 games i have 1 game with button delay.

  17. Blade1889 Says:

I remember when my Xbox 360 got the dreaded red ring of death. I was gutted. I wouldn’t say I’m a massive gamer (I play prob around 6-8 hours a week) but I really missed my Xbox 360 during the two weeks I had to wait for a replacement.

If I was you Dan I’d go for the new PS3 slim. It’d only be about £50 more than a repair on your old PS3 and its supposed to be quieter, lighter and more energy efficient.

  18. vince k Says:

i’ve said for years now that i would like sliders for the refs/fouls. sliders to select the probability of calling a variety of fouls. but also sliders to turn off “COM-assisted” possibilities of your AI players committing random fouls. those of you who have played american football games know what i’m talking about.
i miss those days of seeing the refs beforehand. those days, the game was good. i hate my pes 2010. it’s going on the sale block.

  19. ezekielpacman Says:

@wolvesfan – You don’t actually make any sense mate. For starters… you complain about a PS2 memory card’s price (which, while we’re on the topic of memory cards, MS are in the process of banning the use of 3rd party variants for), yet you are happy to be on your 3rd console and to ‘just buy an arcade’?! Are you insane?

Probing further into your ‘rip off merchant’ claim; who charges additional cost for a wireless adapter? Who only allows proprietary hard drives? Who charges for use of their online service? Which console’s wireless controllers require batteries (rechargeable or not)? Which console isn’t bluetooth capable?

There is a simple term, ‘Value for Money’, that certainly needs to be considered here. I’m no fan boy and prefer my PC to any console, but it annoys me when people ignore facts and exaggerate to make their claims seem more valid.

  20. IM A LOSER Says:

What is this ‘button delay’ everyones banging on about???

  21. Shako Says:

    blind referees are unacceptable!!

you notice how bad the decisions after playing 10 games or so max.. how konami have not noticed this whilst testing the game is beyond me!! if i was in charge, i would be getting everyone i could to test out the game non-stop till every silly fault of the game is found and fixed!!

how hard can it be? a multi-million pound company with so much resources and man power, cannot find BASIC faults in a game!!

im not even gonna get started on the online issues again. ive been playing fifa since the release of PES2010. and unless i hear something radically has changed after this update, there is nothing PES can offer to get back loyal fans like me who are too disappointed with their work this year..

  22. Firsty First of the Firsters! Says:

Who has donwloaded the patch and has it changed the gameplay at all??

  23. jürgen Says:

i think they also messed up saving the formation. why are the things like individual settings, teamsettings, special-attributes, tactics etc. not stored if you copy and save the formation data!? especially online its quite annoying to always redo your settings, even if you play with the same team.

  24. Anonymous Says:

I had a 60gb PS3 and I’ve heard that the 60gb models are prone to the YLOD. I bought the 60gb console and it lasted 6 months (it stopped reading disks and kept freezing) so Sony sent me a replacement under warranty.

THEN, just over a year later, and just a few months out of warranty, I got the YLOD. I was in the middle of playing a demo (thankfully no disc was in) and the console just switched itself off and never restarted, blinking the yellow light instead.

Despite being the SECOND console to break down in less than 2 years, and being fractionally out of warranty, Sony offered another replacement for a fee of £120 and a shocking 3 month warranty. So, in 4 months, if the console broke down again, that’d be another £120 I’d have to pay.

If anyone has a 60gb PS3 and are out of warranty, and it breaks down, my advice would be to NEVER take up their offer to send you a replacement. It’s a rip off.

Sony will charge you £120 with a 3 month warranty to replace it with a refurbished replacement 60gb unit. Given that the 60gb models are apparently prone to YLOD after around 12-18 months, the next time your unit breaks down will be outside the new 3 month warranty and Sony will charge you another £120 to get that fixed.

So rather than pay £120 for a refurbished, inherently faulty model, with almost no warranty, I’ve seen it as a far better deal in the long term to pay an extra £130 (£250 in total) for a 250gb PS3 Slim with Drake’s Fortune 2 AND a 4 year extended third party warranty to cover stuff like this.

Either way, Sony won’t care because they’ll either just keep getting £120 out of you or they are managing to sell two consoles per customer every 18 months. I sent Sony a letter complaining about this and demanding I was reimbursed the money or got my 60gb console repaired, and they replied saying tough luck. Nice.

I would have bought an xbox360 but all my games and bluray disks can’t obviously be used on xbox and I’d take a massive loss on them if I sold them. We also have stuff like guitar hero drums etc and my girlfriend has loads of games, so Sony have really screwed people on this because they’ll know that you have little option but to sell everything else or just buy a new replacement console.

But I’d advise anyone buying a PS3 now to get extended warranty. It’s a boring way to spend £30, but PS3’s and Xbox360’s can literally break down at any point, and in the PS3’s case, the YLOD is ‘conveniently’ famous for kicking in after 12-18 months, just outside the Sony warranty.

But honestly, 2 PS3’s in 22 months and £600. Sony suck.

  25. Fisherandsons Says:

Oh, I forgot to mention, what’s worse is that the YLOD is a known issue to Sony but they refuse to accept liability or extend their warranty.

The issue made it onto BBC’s Watchdog programme. If you google PS3 and Watchdog, you’ll find the video for it.

  26. Dave O Says:

@21, and others who are saying that Konami have “not noticed the refereeing”

I think they did it on purpose, and here’s why: More than any other game I find PES 2010 is very difficult to score in because of the collapsing defenders. It’s also easier than ever to pass the ball around the perimeter of the defense (and in the box), but to make that penetrating play where you play a forward or AMF in behind the defenders, or get a shot off, is very very difficult, alomost impossible at times. This isn’t a true representation of football, but it is fun, unique, and definitely playable… It’s just what PES 2010 is. So, if you take the overall way PES 2010 plays into account you can readily see that if fouls could lead to penalties that drawing penatlies would become statistically the easiest way to score. Like I said, it’s easier than ever to get the ball into the box and pass it around, so it’s no wonder this results in what would be/should be a lot of penalties. Personally, I think Konami realized this in play testing, and instead of rebuilding the game’s AI from the groud up they decided to make penalities much more rare (too rare obviously). But again, it’s intentional IMO, and for “good” reasons.

The solution then, for me, is not to add sliders, but to make next year’s game more balanced. Instead of being too easy to move the ball through the midfield, and too hard to break down the defense, both should be more balanced. In other words, when you get the ball it should be more uncertain that you will manage to get posession in the final third (more midfield battling), and when you get there it should be difficult to break down the defense, but not as difficult as in this year’s game.

That would solve the penalties problem, because getting into the box with posession (and maintaining posession) would be more rare – so they could make penalties happen more often. Also this would make the long range screamers more rare because the defense woudln’t collapse as much.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m still loving this year’s game, but if you want to see more penalties it will take a rework of the whole AI in my opinion to make the game balanced.

  27. Ethiaa Says:

The refs wouldn’t actually bother me if they were consistent. It’s fine never giving penalties if it applies to both sides. When it’s only the player and not a com side who gets the rough end of the stick, it’s just irritating… and I don’t play games to be irritated.

  28. christos21 Says:

    Kick It, Old School comment…

I too have been playing some of my old PES games lately. Not for the same reasons as you Dan, but more because of my mixed feelings about PES 2010. I managed to find all my PES game-disks from PES 5 until this years version. I have been comparing them closely, played every PES a couple of games. Clearly PES 5 is the overall winner. They took allot of things out of that game,… every follow up has a little less of the great futures PES 5 had. In this, I mean game-play and menu /options.

To me, PES 2010 is almost unplayable comparing to previous releases, even after giving it many chances (like you did advice people in the beginning). PES 2010 has stunning graphics but doesn’t provide the true Pro Evolution feeling I’ve had in the past. After a couple of ruff weeks and difficult thoughts, I finally made a decision. PES 2010 will be the first PES I won’t play… and that’s hard to say. Had to share this with ya’ll.

  31. TrueGooner Says:

I am truly disappointed in Konami. I have been bragging about how good this game was going to be to friends who are stunch FIFA fans and only to get this junk call PES 2010. Why are these people who are responsible for this game so lazy in developing it? It pains me because i have no desire to play footy video game as i refuse to play FIFA. Deng I am in denial. If these PES people don’t get it together i will abandon this franchise. This is not right, I am done defending Pro evolution. You can’t give us all the leagues, you can’t give us the official kits and stadium even though we don’t mind these things, but where it matters the most on the pitch, you are frustrating us. Common now is that too much to ask for? You not even shame to come out and say your exciting update is japan national team? I hope they do something fast unless they are thinking about only releasing the game in Japan in the future.

  32. MJGzo8 Says:

Sales are down. (40% I THINK)

  35. Neo NiGHTS ® Says:

Anyone else here actually like to play all the domestic leagues in order to unlock the hidden players or prefer the old way, where you’d earn points and then be able to unlock everything you wanted?
(I surely like the old way)

About the (lack of) penalty kicks, what scares me is because Konami seems to be unable to make a balance at anything. So, in PES 2011, probably we will have a game where any contact between players will be awarded a foul :p

They should give a serious look back at PES3 and PES5 (the best ones, by far, IMHO) and get things right!

  36. moaners Says:

Ok its not perfect, but I am enjoying PES2010. Every time I look at the comments on this site its just full of people moaning about the game. There are a few things which could be improved (online especially) but Pes2010 plays a bloody good game of football. I have not been so immersed in a Master League since PES5. I am just getting sick of people moaning about what I believe is a good football game. Why dont you all fruck off to the FIFA forums and chat to like minded 13 year olds about how many goals you scored which were all exactly the same on the great game which is FIFA 10.

  37. MikeHunt Says:

I bought the original PS3 and after 18 months (6 months after warranty ended) it died on me. I rang SONY and to my astonishment they agreed to send me a refurb free of charge. Got it delivered to my work 48 hrs later and have not had a problem since… Saying that I paid about £450.00 for my machine and for it to stop working after only 1.5 years is criminal…

  38. MikeHunt Says:

Can anyone advise me how you are supposed to take penalties?

I have tried to find “Penalties” in training mode to practice without success and I have also tried to follow the instructions provided by Konami that flash up on the screen prior to you kicking the ball but cannot make head nor tail of their instructions… Can anyone help me to take penalties or atleast advise as to how you can practice penalty taking in training mode?

  39. Neo NiGHTS ® Says:

Well, there are no “penalties” in trainning mode (never was, actually). You have to do a Free-Kick trainning and then put the ball inside the area.

As to how to properly take penalty kicks, there’re some nice tutorials on You Tube.

  40. torrent Says:

@ 36 ofcourse people are going to moan if there is fundamentally wrong with the game. I myself moan about the online, because that is my problem with the game. Which is a major issue, especially when its been going on for 3 years dammit! its not like it has just occurred on this outing of PES. So we are entitled to moan, having just spent £40 on a game, which we prefer to fifa at the end of the day. However why should we keep quiet and not say nothing about isHow can you enjoy a game, if you have an issue with it.

If you keep quiet then next year there will be no progression.

If your not happy say it, dont plaster over the cracks!

  41. Dave O Says:

@40 – Yes, but some of these comments are laughable.

I’ve said it a million times, but I think if you want your comments to be taken seriously they need to take a constructive form. It’s amazing how few people seem to understand this. Comment like ‘LAZY’ for example are not constructive. They are, quite simple, LAZY comments. It takes some effort to make a constructive remark, and to be realistic. There’s actually a big difference between that and just being overly positive and blind. The difference is that ultimately I am willing to give Konami a chance and to not over-react. Also, to communicate the positives so that they also feel that we appreciate the things that they ARE doing right. This is in contrast to comments like those by Christos, 33, who obviously has no faith in Konami. I say, if that’s really how you feel, stop wasting your time on this site, or as part of this community. I for one see the positives – innovations like BAL, the new ML, improved AI, graphics, new moves, cards, and sliders… Then I say my two bits about the online, and some of the problems with the game, so that I don’t sound like an immature moaner, who can only see the negatives.

That being said, I am starting to clue in to the importance of the sliders. Last night I did some tinkering to the sliders in my ML team and actually found that some of the issues I was complaining about can be resolved with the sliders. In other words, I wasn’t playing the game on that level, and so I was missing the fact that I can control some of the things I didn’t like about the game (namely, build up play and support in the box, off the ball runs, etc). I feel like I’m just scratching the surface though.

PS – I too am more engrossed in ML than ever in the past. I can;t stop thinking about it – what my goals are for next campaign, what can be salvaged from this year’s season (just got knocked out of Europa), who to sign for next year, etc…

  42. Smarty Says:

@36 – well said! Pes2010 does have it’s bugs but it still has that one more game feel!!

  43. pes ex hubby Says:

    @42

pes2010 also has that “why are you still playing me when you know i’ve been **** for 3 years feel to it”

  44. trebor Says:

    @ 41

Im not going to be positive or make a constructive comment when their is absolutely nothing to be positive about. I dont want to play on bal or the master league. I want to play online and i cant, so im going to be negative and moan and go on about how LAZY konami are.

Online gaming is the future of videogames, it is an area i personally get the most pleasure from playing. Konami have had an age to rectify pes online problems and have shown themselves to be completely inept.

  45. Quin Says:

Ok, i’ve had enough, PES will be traded in whiie it’s still worth some cash. This is the worst PES ever! Yes, the gameplay is fine, but there is too many things bothering me, defenders keep backing off when i attack and the ai doesnt attack at all, just keeps passing the ball around keeping possesion, rediculous! I’m a third of a way into master league, only conceded 3 goals and havnt lost a match, how boring, and dont even get started on the online, its a joke, yes, the previous versions had some lag but the game was playable, now its totally unplayable as you are never in full control of your players. I use to play PES the whole year round but with 2010 i dont get that ”just one more game feeling”. I hate fifa too, same goals being scored and lots of other issues, i’m going to stick to playing games like MW2, this is an awesome game, fingers crossed for next years footy games, but i wont get my hopes up

  46. Neo NiGHTS ® Says:

@ Quin – In which difficulty do you play?

  47. Rapid-Counter Says:

    I’ll make this one short.

The automated controls are ruining the game for me.

Why do the passes go straight to your player when you’ve got your eyes closed dreaming of a better game?

Passing is too easy, the computer picks the passes for. No thought and no skill involved in basic passing.

I paid £40 for the game and still think it will be value for money because I think I will be playing this game until mid/late next year.

I still think PES should evolve quicker than they have. There is so much more simple things they could do to make the game more realistic/harder-stronger.

    :-(

  48. OldschoolAL Says:

Please please please, someone bring out an option file that updates all the usual stuff but also turns those 18 spare teams into Championship teams!! I will pay good money for that as it will make pes the most authentic master league ever. Pretty please? My efforts are poor. Just like Kenny’s family.

  49. Jay Says:

    Gents,

Mine’s coming sorta right…. for some reason my port settings were not on automatic.

Although it seems only better on quick match.

Does anyone have an idea how to reset your online stats?

  50. Dave O Says:

@47 – That’s a good criticism. Now, what do you suggest they do specifically to fix it? Also, you have to keep the big picture in mind. This year dribbling isn’t as effective, so passing sort of “needed to be” better. I agree, that is something which should be changed. On the other hand, I do love that I can now keep posession much more. It makes the game fun in a lot of ways.

What do people think about maybe making it so that when you have possession there is an arrow over your player, but also a smaller/lighter arrow over the player who you would pass to if you were to press the button at that moment (maybe one for long press, one for short)? I agree that one of the biggest problems with PES at the moment (in general) is that passing doesn’t always go where you want it to. This would help I think, but at the expense of having another cursor on the screen which might make it look less realistic. This doesn’t seem to bother people too much in the wii versions, mind you, which have “graphical assist” elements all over the screen.

For online, you would not see the opponent’s cursor by the way, and for games on the same console against human AI this would obviously be optional.

Another semi-constructive criticism: shots hit the post too often. They should happen about half as often as they do IMO in order to make the game more realistic.

And one more: There has been a LOT of complaining about the keepers, but nobody I have heard has mentioned this one specific bug, which is that occassionaly you score a goal where your player shoots it hard, it crosses the line just barely and the keeper gets a hand on it just behind the line. This happens too often for my liking, and it happens on shots that are just too hard to be realistic. Goals like that are not satisfying IMO, they should either be saves, or they at least go in off the keeper’s hand – not in and out in a flash as often as they do. This was a bug in 09 and I was surpsised to see it’s still there.

One more: Keepers stand still a bit too much on shots that beat them. Yes, for the most part I’m talking about goals that they had no chance to stop, but in real life, more often than not a keeper will make an attempt anyway, even if only to show his team/coach that he’s trying! Sometimes real life keepers are stunned and don’t even move, true, but it should be a more the exception than the rule like it is in PES 2010.

    PEACE

Fixed my YLOD with electrical compound past, and a heat gun in an hour. Running smoother and with less fan noise than initial purchase.

Search You Tube for Gilksy YLOD. Great step by step guide.

  52. Neo NiGHTS ® Says:

@50 – Your idea about passing seems nice.
I don’t know why, but the CPU (when controlling your passes) has a tendency to pass the ball to the player who’s COMPLETELY offside or the one who’s far far away, with many players marking him.
Having a way to choose which player you’d like to pass to would be nice, really.

About the goalkeeper, you’ve nailed it. On PES’09 was way to common to see shots the way you’ve mentioned. OTOH, while they still happen on PES’10 it does a much less frequency.

No one here yet complained about clipping! You know, when there’s a ball that goes straight to the goalkepper but it simply goes THROUGH his hands/arms/feet…

Also I think that when you press Triangle (on PS control) the keeper should be more responsive and leave the area quicker, SPECIALLY on corner kicks. It’s trully annoying when the ball goes inside the small area (or very close to it) and the goalkeeper stands there, under the posts.
(PES3 was better in this aspect)

  53. Quin Says:

@ Neo Nights post 46. I played on proffesional difficulty

  54. Wheels86 Says:

@ 50/52 I agree totally with the goalkeeper and sliders comments the goals where the balls just cross the line are more common than I would personally like dunno if it helps but with regards to passing do you use assisted semi assisted or manual in playing options?this makes a big difference as to where your passes go well it does for me anyway it reduces the ‘daft’ pass option you mentioned above.I have also found tweaking the sliders changes the way your team plays and the gameplay it makes it more individual & I would presume keep more people happy as we all seem to want different styles from pes faster slower etc etc

@ Quin your problems with cpu not attacking and it being easy etc prob stem from the difficulty top player attacks alot more I find the other difficulties are designed to make it easier for you to get used to the gameplay and to keep possesion and learn how to break down attacks before hitting top player which could be harder IMO i have just finished first ml season and won both Champs League & Premiership.with the latter being a really good tittle race between 5clubs until the last 4 games or so much better than the usual two clubs you have competeing.

also anybody think that after the group stages the Champs league is a little too easy??i smashed Real 4-0 at home in the semi with United but had no Rooney Rio Giggsy or Carrick due to injuries/tiredness to me this is the only bug bear in the ML as for me its a million times better than the previuos editions which IMO never seemed to evolve.

  55. Andy Says:

I played top level serie a with Inter. Conceded 11 goals and scored exactly 100. I am good though, best ive ever seen. Had only one penalty in the whole game to date, should have had loads. dunno why they have taken the option to not put midfielders in the box for corners.

  56. Dave O Says:

I agree that the game could be a bit harder, but for me it’s not too terribly easy. If I were good enough to worry about it though I would use weak-mid level teams as opposed to the top sides.

@54 – Wheels: Which passing setting do you recommend? I am on default, whatever that is…

Also, switching from 10 min halves to 15 has been a huge improvement for me personally. I find that it means I can score more goals, but it also means the AI is more likely to score as well. Had some really great battles against the AI on Top Player with 15 min halves and at least in that mode, with a mid to low stats team, the game is a great level of challenge for me.

  57. Neo NiGHTS ® Says:

Well, the game isn’t the hardest out there but also I don’t think it’s THAT easy either (as to score 100 goals on one season).

What gives is that when I start winning many games on a row, then the CPU simply decides that I’ll not score and all of their attacks will be a goal.
It happened a lot on PES’09 as well; when you could give more than 20 shots in a game without scoring any goal while the CPU, with about five shots would score one or two…

No one can win against CPU bias :)

@54 Wheels – I use either assisted or semi-assisted. I don’t feel that much of a difference, to be honest.

  58. wheels86 Says:

@ Dave O default is usually assisted mate so check it out

@ Neo there isn’t much difference between those two but have you tried Manual option this usually gives you more freedom of passing and control of player runs etc.

I agree that if i could be arsed I would start a ML with a mid table side and see if its harder but I don’t see why we can’t have the old 6 star difficulty you had to unlock think that was PES5 that seemed harder and more of a battle either that or I wasn’t that good back then :p

@ Neo I have had afew games where if CPU does not want you to win you won’t tap ins balloon over keepers fumble or drop into there own goal etc etc this is frustrating saying that in real life you do have teams that go on runs and slip up against lower teams United Burnley this year for example although we wern’t on a run but you get my thinking.

  59. Dave O Says:

Actually, with regards to difficulty, what’s really sad is that I – at least – found the demos (PES and WE) were both harder than the final version, espcially since WE had a 6th star. Or is that just my imagination?

  60. wheels86 Says:

I agree I felt WE was harder due to that extra difficulty level maybe the PES demo was harder due to the fact it was a daft early build?? It was easier for me to get penalties and refs seemed less lenient have Konami missed a trick here??lol I kinda liked how it seemed harder than the full game though.

  61. Anonymous Says:

The refs in this game are unbelievable but the minute i tackle COM, I get red carded. YES YOU HEARD IT RITE, I get red carded on my 1st foul. The refs are not balanced in this game.

  62. wheels86 Says:

I agree the refs are shocking I have had similar experiences maybe not as extreme as your example but bad enough

is it just me that thought the refs were less lenient and more balanced in the demos??

  63. FOOTIE MAD Says:

Well said torrent ,40,i also have an issue with the onlione aspect ,how much longewrv are we expected to tolerate a below par online service. As mentioned ,it is now 3 years, and 3 years at £40 is £120,thats alot of money to spend on a product thjat is insufficfient, everry year we aere told there are no problems with online ,every year there is ,is this acceptable in your eyes i ask you,are we not entitled to moan. But worse still I cannot get ovetr the lies I have personally been told over the time by Konami, making it feel as if it is my connection/provider etc ,thats not good for any business, and anaopen apology should be sent to all involved ,but we get nothing, just the same promises every year ,and the same mediocre service every time ,its gotta stop ,right here and now .I want someone from kONAMI to discuss the online issues and adress them .They were good at talking up how good the online was ,but when discovered ity isnt ,there is not a word,no representation. Its like a builder doing a ba job at someones house, getting paid ,then ignoring the customers phone calls ,because they aint interested, they got their money
