Master League Magic

PES Fans are a nostalgic bunch in general. I don’t think there is a week goes by whereby someone doesn’t mention a previous version of the game without throwing it a compliment. Whilst everyone no doubt has their favourite game from the archives, the one feature that has been around throughout the last decade, and arguable the USP of the Pro Evolution Soccer franchise is the Master League.

In fact, the Master League started way back in 1999, meaning that for the past decade, people have been building up their teams, selling on their stars and conquering the virtual football world. As a result, the game mode has at times felt dated and is still searching for that overhaul that made the football gaming community stand up and take note at the end of the 20th century.

The purpose of this feature is to capture some of the stories, the events and the magic moments of the PESGaming.com’s communties Master League experiences. This could be anything from a young signing who went on to be the world superstar after a shakey start with your club, or the journeyman midfielder who went on a 6 game goal streak to carry your team to the title. The stories are up to you, and whilst I have a fair few of my own, I would rather be publishing your features and tales from the past 10 years of the Master League.

The rules are simple, send your story, which can be no less than 250 words but no more than 500, to interferingwithplay@hotmail.co.uk. Make sure to include your name (either real name, screen name or both), your location (city and country) and which version of PES you are talking about. Other details such as you age, console and any other information can be included if you so wish. Try and make you story enjoyable to read, as I will do very little editing to them unless necessary. This feature will run for around two months, until the start of the Interfering With Play League, and will act as an alternative to the focus this site will be putting on PES 2011 over the next few months. Get your stories penned, and to get the ball rolling…

Pro Evolution Soccer (Playstation One)

My story relates to my very first Master League, on the very first PES to include the feature. I was in charge of Inter Milan, and had a very shakey start which included the flop signing of David Trezeguet. During the first season, a mid table finish was my realtistic aim, and the second season saw a top 6 finish, as a steadily built my squad. I had brought a very attacking side, and unlike nowadays, purchased superstars such as Ronaldo and Beckham to help me achieve my aims. Anyway, last game of the season, I was at home to Juventus, requiring a win and it to be better than AC Milan’s result for a title win. I started very badly, and went 1-0 down early on, and a second half equaliser seemed to be the best I could muster. With the clock ticking into injury time, I managed to work the ball out to Beckham, whose near post cross was headed well clear by the Juve defense. However, there was no whistle as the ball floated into the path of Denilson. I had been playing the winger just behind my strikers, and as the ball was travelling towards him, he stuck out a left leg and brought the ball down almost instantly, as it hit the floor, the ball bounced up perfectly for the Brazilian to hit a first time side volley, which flew into the top corner! This goal proved to win me the title, as AC Milan only managed a draw at Lazio, and I won the league by a single point. The goal is saved somewhere on a PS One Memory Card, and made me intstantly addicted to the Master League game mode. This happened around 10 years ago, so is obviously an incredible moment for me to remember all this time!

I remember playing PES 4 a few years back. I was playing as Liverpool, and had Morientes in the team, he got injured and it stated he would be out for 31weeks? Has anyone had a player out injured that long? I was suprised, luckilly i’ve only had players out for up to 3 weeks so far in PES 2010

  7. J-dawg Says:

My Fiorentina side in PES 2008 after about 6 seasons. I didnt buy any superstars and decided to buy young players and and build them up whilst usin my already established stars. I kno zlatan is a superstar but the only reason y i did that was because the game cheated me in the CL final so i was angry and bought zlatan lol. I dare anyone adn i mean anyone to beat that team. my average goals per game was about 5, it was total destruction vs any opponent. Best player of that team was rosina, UNSTOPABLE

Ive put many hours into ML over the years my gf can vouch for that lol, loads of great seasons when you finally get your dream team maradona and van basten up front.
Its strange when you finally get your dream team you stop playing and want to start a new ML?
Anyway this year my gf is happier as Konami have messed up the gameplay and made it that little bit to frustrating for me to play honestly ive tried.
Im waiting for that dream patch to fix it, before the worldcup starts would be great,
Not a patch that adds an advert or two like before, that was pathetic i just want to see a penalty thats all.

‘Pes fans are a nostalgic bunch’ we have to be because the recent editions of Pes have been ****e!

Ok, I know this is off topic, but since the current iteration of Pes is so dismal I expect the majority of you have been playing FIFA. My question is this: has anybody noticed that the Xbox 360 version is far worse than the Ps3?

The 360 adaptation of FIFA is almost as bad as the Xbox version of Pes6 in comparison to Pes6 on the Ps2 – movement is rigid, there seems to be no 360 passing and everything is very clunky and awkward.

While the Xbox 360 enjoys the advantage of a better graphics chip that allows for more detailed textures, the overall game-play is shocking.

I watched an Xbox 360 vs. Ps3 comparison on YouTube recently (http://cuthut.com/jGY) and so far the battle is edging in favour of the Ps3; mainly because the Ps3 can simulate 6 processors and the 360 only has 3.

The reason that a lot of games used to appear graphically better on the 360 is because most multiplatform games are designed for the Xbox and then ported over to the PS3.

good examples of the 360’s lack of processing power are COD Modern Warfare2 and Assassins Creed 2, where both games look out of focus and hazy in comparison to their PS3 doppelgangers.

One area where the 360 does shine is online connectivity. One of my mates bought a 360 recently and the days of locked menus and random matches that freeze are over – he can even invite a friend without having to wait an hour, and umpteen times, for the game to finally connect.

Sony really has to sort it out, because they have the edge on Microsoft and they are letting themselves down by offering terrible online gaming.

I spoke to a rep from EA recently and he said that it’s a Ports issue; however, COD Modern Warfare 2 is better online on the PS3 than the 360 so I suspect this is not a PSN issue and more than likely an EA issue since they seem to favour Microsoft.

To me it appears as if football games are the only genre that suffers on the PS3, whilst all other games run very smoothly and without disconnection problems.

Winning Eleven/PES on PS2: the best football game in history!

    PES today:
bad IA, in Become a Legend: baaaaaaaaad IA!!
no realistc: no penalties kicks, stupid dinamics, bad moviments…

Conclusion: Master League is bad, Become a Legend is terrible!!

    @Quin

In PES2010 ML I am Bristol City(made them) and because I have very low funds, my fitness coach and team doctor levels are low. I have had several players out for about 20 weeks and I had one player injured for about 40 weeks, he was out for a whole season!

At least this is quite realistic now but in general I am finding PES too samey. I find Fifa 10 the better game now as I am getting into online more and more. PES 2010 is sometimes unplayable and more often than not you can feel the computer scripting the goals in the game. Goals seem to be scored at similar times in every game. It really starts to get boring and repetitive after a while.

This one is from PES 6. I was playing my first Div 1 season with Napoli (original ML players). At the start of the season, I made some sensible purchases, a keeper and a striker, promising youngsters… can’t remember who now. The 1st half of the season went rather well, among the top 7 and all. At the half-season transfer break, however, I went crazy and brought in around 3-4 players, which reduced my funds to less than 200! Don’t know what I was thinking. The team played better now, but games didn’t go so well. I conceded quite a lot because I was playing a more attacking style. It all boiled down to the D1 cup in the end. I was playing the final against Inter, of all teams, and I *needed* to win the cup in order to have enough money to pay salaries. I was in deep ****. The game was EPIC, and I came out on top after extra time, 3-2. It was my best ML experience ever, as I usually don’t get in this kind of trouble.
