Seabass talks PES 2009

With Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 still a couple of weeks away, game producer Seabass is already looking ahead to PES 2009. In a joint interview to Gamekult and Level7, Seabass has revealed his aspirations for pushing the PES franchise forward in all new ways. L7: How many players can play online on each format and are we going to see some downloadable updates like new line-ups?
It’s only one-on-one on all formats. The reason is that we weren’t happy with the way it was done in the previous games. We want online play to be just as good or at least similar to how it is online, so we have rebuilt most of the system. Doing so, we didn’t have time to include more than 1 vs. 1. When it comes to updates, we haven’t got any plans for now. We are weak when it comes to licenses and when we get better on that, we can also work on getting updates online.
L7: Are there any differences between the PS3- and the Xbox 360-versions?
No, none.
Gamekult: If you had had the time; what would you put into PES 2008 and what is going to be in the next game?
I cannot reveal any new game modes or details, but I have already decided on many things. One thing I can tell you about though is that we are going to change the mentality of how we are making the games. We can’t continue the way we have done before, so it’s guaranteed there will be some changes there. We are not happy within the team and we want to make you and the consumers happy.
L7: What do you mean by “the mentality”?
It’s how we make the games. We started creating PES with less than ten persons more than ten years ago. In a way, we still do. If you take a look at other next gen-games from other developers such as Assassin’s Creed or GTA4 it’s a team of over 100 persons who finish the game. But we can’t do it like that, because we still depend on the same core of six persons in the team. That is a weak point. It is also positive since it helps maintain the feeling of PES in the programming, but there’s a lot of drawbacks too. So we have to change the mentality of how we create the games.
Gamekult: In the first reviews of the game there are complaints of the game speed of the next gen-version. Why can’t you put in an option for game speed like earlier Winning Eleven versions?
It’s a question of balancing. For example on the PSOne we could increase the speed of the game by lowering to 27-28 fps and make it slower by increasing to 32-33 fps. But now we are constantly running in 60 fps and can’t do the same trick. We as developers would like to make the game in 30 fps, but that wouldn’t be smooth enough. But we learn from the criticism.
L7: Last year we got a 360-version with very few functions. This year you’re giving us an edit-function that should’ve been in PES6 and Team Vision. Do you really believe that this is enough? And can you promise us that there will be significantly more for PES 2009?
Yes, I can promise you that. Because now we finally have the basics for all the next gen-platforms. We had a lot of ideas, but couldn’t change that between different platforms so now we can concentrate on adding new functions.
Gamekult: Can we expect new functions in the Japanese Winning Eleven version which is due for release soon?
Yes, a couple of minor changes. The AI will probably be different among other things. But we can’t continue doing that because soon we will be giving you online play regardless of where in the world you are, and then we can’t have different systems.

L7: When you play against the computer the players in your team make more mistakes than the opposition players do. Is that just a way to raise the difficulty level or is it some sort of problem in the match engine?
What kind of mistakes?
L7: The mid-backs for example, runs more often away from their positions and lose the markings.
We don’t do that sort of things to heighten the difficulty level, what you are talking about is probably settings in your game system or your tactics.
I’am going to return my Fifa 08 game in the next few days and wait for the Premier Football game …Pro Evo 2008.. cannot wait

No differences between 360 and PS3? Apart from visually, isn’t the PS3 version 8 player offline and 360 version 4 player only?

The part about makin your own players play alot worse has been true on all the Pro Evo games,but its somethin you get used to. Even when playin against a friend you’ll find it usually chooses 1 person’s team to play good football and the other team it just bounces off their players and they cant pass, no matter how good you are at the game.. takes a real fan of all the games to notice things like that though.
it has been true. he says there wasnt time to put more than 1vs1 online and then says there wont be any updates coz of lack of licenses….why cant making it 2vs2 online be an updated.dam seabass

You should have more weather conditions, snow,foggy days,heavy or light rain, that actually affect the gameplay e.g the ball slipping around more,or on foggy or windy days passing should be less accurate. There should also be stuff like mud on players shirts and cuts and bruises on players when they get injured. And better crowd noises and graphics for the crowd.Also you should have the option of like 5 different cutscenes when you enter a match, to make it seem more realistic. Also in the master league you should be able to give interviews, with like a choice of sentences to every question asked, that’d rock.
I also reckon that when you receive a through ball, your player should get a little bit of an adrenaline rush, like in real football, players seem to go faster to recieve through balls, and there shud also be pushing and shoving in the penalty area, and also the option to have the pitch torn up during the match.

Fuck seabass, i have been playin since ISS and the graphics are goin backwards, gameplay is shittier than ever and wat the fuck is with the sh##E animations.. Theres been enough said about the online crap so i will just slate the behind goal camera when your facing a penalty! You 6 dumplins must just not realise your all spoiling the game so why dont you pass it over to some other game developers so that they can have a better go
I am a pes player for many years. the game is bad and the online is exhaust. I do not know what AI r u talking about.
The defand is bad and every game is a between 8 - 12 goals.
I personally gave up, I bought Euro 2008 and I am very happy!
The best game I ever played! online is great and unbelieavable! I hope Konami will improve the game, but I will not going to buy it anyway, beacuse the online was always bad compare what I have today.

i second the motion about the running animation issue.players run like robots.they should design player movement based on real human movement.even EA with Euro 2008 made a huge step forword in this matter.PES fans have great expectations in new gen consols and maybe its time to see something fresh.I mean player movement engine is almost the same since the first series.it;s time to take it to the next level

I have one thing i would like to have in the next PES game.
Allstar-game. If you play against a friend you take turns of picking a player from any team. You start with goalkeeper then the defenders and so on until you got a whole team.
Then you can play matches with the best players in the game.
You can call it Superstar Soccer Mode or something.
Or Seabass Superchallenge =)
