PES 2008 ‘Stumbles onto PS3′
Posted by Peter Willis in PES 2008 News on Thu 18 Oct
Respected gaming magazine ‘Play’ have given the latest installment of Pro Evolution Soccer a woeful 70%. Summarising the game, they had this to say:
‘PES 2008 stumbles, rather than sprints onto the PS3, leaving us with the first Pro Evo game that falls short of the Fifa franchise. We expected a revolutionised football title that’d set the series back on course, but this is just shameful’.
I have myself been playing FIFA 08 for 3 days now and although I’m not ready to give you my full review; I can say this much… FIFA 08 just about has it all - the commentary and crowd noise are superb, the visuals from a distance are superb (faces are terrible compared with PES 2008) and the gameplay is challenging yet rewarding as you begin to improve your game. Although I still feel Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 just about has the edge gameplay wise this year, I dare say next year it may not be the case, and the lack of licensing and a feel of ‘realism’ about the whole experience could put FIFA out in front.
It is worth pointing out this is the first review from a UK source, and generally speaking all the buzz has been positive for PES 2008. I’ve been playing the demo on the 360 and PC for sometime now, and of course it’s an improvement on PES6… but just like the reviewer at ‘Play’ magazine, I too feel let down by the lack of a real revolutionary switch from PS2 to Next-gen.

How can PES08 fall short of Fifa when PES3 is better than the current Fifa, let alone the soon to be released PES08.
The PES series has always progessed from one game to the next. Although its only natural to want or even expect more from the next series. To mark it down because it doesnt meet those expectations, when its still the best football game, is ridiculous and irresponsible coming from a magazine reviewer.
Lets not get dazzled by the off field brilliance of Fifa. On the pitch, where it counts, PES rules the roost. By a distance.
i was flickin thru the official playstation magazine an it got 90 if i can remember proplee
no way is fifa better ive played the pes2008 demo bout 12 times an if i had 2 give it a score although full game isnt out yet i would say 94/100 i dont care what people think i love pro always have always will it kicks fifas ass all day lon, get mine in a week on pre order :) but i think the wii pro evo luks ****
stumbles lol
I myself agreed pes08 will be a fun game to play.Just played the demo , you will feel the different. When it release , it will kick away the one most people do not like.
Fifa 08 is Bloody Good! and I LOVE Pro Evo!!!
fifa 08 stil feels same old to me
Just doing some of my research, and it turns out that Play magazine gave Lair 90%!! Lair is arguably one of the worse PS3 games, and there has been one or two poor games on the system. You look at any respectable games website (IGN, Gamespot) or any respectable games magazine (GamesTM) and Lair has reached no higher than a 4.5/10. I think the people at Play Magazine might just be a little bit naive.
As an older gamer i have been playing PES since the early days off ISS and recently played the Fifa demo whick i was not immpressed with at all and will not be buying.
I only tried Fifa given that my support for PES was beginning to slide after PES 6 with its lack of league/cup and master league structure options to mention a few flaws.
For me the game simply did not have the replay value of earlier versions given the repetition of its master league structure.
I know i’ll buy Pes2008 anyway since it has the better game play by a long shot but i’m sad to hear this news but i have to say i kind of expected this half arsed approach from Konami.
I feel that there has not really been that much innovation since the days of PES 3 but i’m still looking forward to the release of the game if with somewhat reserved hopes. (PS3 Owner)
Thanks for your patience.
oh that is bull**** fifa ..i bought it and it just plain **** you cant even pass the ball in it properly it sucks…how can they say something like that…
surely pes08 wont be bad. i too have been a huge pro ev fan since the old days and i cant wait for the game to come out its like christmas i cant sleep the nite before it is released hope im not dissapointed.
Lets face it, we will all be buying PES 2008, thats what we do, ive been out and bought FIFA, i am very impressed, it has a learning curve for a change!!!….i think despite its bugs, its superb, but, i will still be having pro evo, even though this year looks like a shallow watered down version, more fool me for buying it then!!!
im a PES guy but i think FIFA has improved massively and CON-ami have shot themselves in the foot, 15 stadiums and limited editing? Quite Poor/****
FIFA is a good game really but what lack in Fifa at this moment is .1) Weather: Where is the rain or snow? 2) Playing 80% of away league matches at the same stadium 3) Speed: Cant really out pace a footaball player
Anyway PES is a fun game, but seriously 15 stadiums..You on crack?? WTF HAPPEND 2 NEX GEN..
Pro Evoultion might be now on the decline..:(
woah slow down guys dnt jump da gun im sure pro will be sick 1nce u look past da kits nd stadiums at least itll be better den fifa. i havnt got it but my m8 sez pro6 woz better gameplay wise
how can you people say fifa is good it is a terrible next gen game, shooting, passing and dribbling suck and so does the speed thing and the way a small player can never get around a big player..everytime you cross the ball you nearly always win the header..its ****..so what if there is only 15 stadiums you wont be looking round the stadium while your playing the game will you
Dude what the hell are you talking in order for the new pes08 to be worse than fifa it would have to be a disaster just like this pathetic try by ea to make anything as good as to what konami has been making for more than a decade.
just read the official ps3 mag’s review of pro evo and it got a solid 9 out of 10! mentioned a few down points but we all know them! I myself am lookin forward to the new game so this time next week we’ll all be playin our mates with a beer and zoot so have fun everyone!!! pro evo always beats fifa no matter what!!
It doesn’t affect the enjoyment of the game too much, but it’s another let down by Konami. 15 stadiums and no British ones is a joke. This alongside all the other half-assed efforts it looks like Seabass has promised so much and has yet again delivered so little.
Still can’t wait to get playing though.
Maybe we are underestimating the difficulty in learning to program for the PS3. Seabass does say that they need to change their mentality. Currently only using about 10 people to make a game where other developers have far more. Games can now gross more than blockbuster films. The production side needs to mirror that. Hopefully he has learnt this and PES09 will push the boat out. Also he has mentioned before his vision of 10vs10. So he sounds like he is thinking on the right lines.
I’ve been playing PES6 now solidly for a year, I’m sure 08 will placate me until the proper next gen version comes out :)
these ppl chat **** all the time, i remeber they gave MGS2 like 70%, they must hate konami and anways most if not all gamesreviewers r bribed by the companies, look at the gamespot and Halo 3 case
I agree with the guy who wrote this thread, PES still has the edge. However, I’ve been a PES freak for years now, and for that very same reason, it really angers me that people are not giving the new FIFA a chance. They grab it, play 2 games and say it’s crap and that you cannot pass the ball properly and whatnot. Exactly the same weak arguments that FIFA players used to produce when they played 1 PES game and dismissed it without a second glance. As PES players, you should know well that games with depth take time to master. You’d rather grab FIFA and win 20-0 in the second game? That’s exactly what you complained about before. You dismiss it because of the name, like FIFA player always did with PES.
PLAY MAGAZINE OBVIOUSLY HAVE NO IDEA!
TW@S
Spot on if you ask me. it’s unplayable with the slowdown
Pro 2008 On The Playstation 3 is a disgrace. I Bought my PS3 primarily to play Pes2008, but the quality of the game is extremly poor. The slowdown during a match is a joke! Having always backed pes over fifa, i am afraid to say that konami have sold themselves short, and produced a game which can only be described as a disgrace, and shamfull to those who have boght a ps3. WARNING dont buy Pes2008, you will only be left dissapointed
played pes 2008 on the ps3 today and the slowdown totally ruins the game, played pes for last 7 years but wont be this year
I don’t agree with all the slowdown comments. I was really worried that the game would be ruined on PS3, and like many it was a major factor in deciding to buy the Playstation.
However, the slowdown on effects the replays and into badly - the game in completely playable but does slow down very OCCASIONALLY when hundereds of the players in the box.
I’v played Pro Evo on many formats for years and in my opinion this is still the best of the lot. We are currently 23hrs into a Pro Evo launch party and all agree it deserves 90-94% and is best in series.
Buy it and make your own mind up is my advice
personally, i think this is by far the worst version so far - yeah fine the graphics/gameplay blah blah blah - but no 2 player online? or even a playable 1 player online? what a ridiculous omission. to be honest, i doubt if i’ll play this again - its already back in its box. get the lag sorted, bring back 2 player online mode, otherwise i’m hangin up the fingers….
I got it early and didnt like it straight away but I always give time for me 2 get used 2 it so 2 days later im hating the game even more the graphics r awful (for ps3) gameplay is extremely slow tackling doesnt feel right they’ve took away the training feature (that teachs u how 2 play) you cant play as ur master league team in exibition theres no PES shop the replays are very slow its just a bad game now we’ll have 2 wait another long year for an improvement…
Lets not get too far ahead of ourselves…PRO has a better game engine..it always has (since ISS PRO 98) and its almost impossible to go wrong with it…if it was a new game on the market people would be jumping through hoops about it, but its not…it was the little game (as much as u could call konami ‘little’) that trumped the EA fifa licensed, style over substance juggernaught that was the FIFA franchise…and gameplay wise its still better…but the problem is its just got stagnant since PES4…nothing realy has changed, its realized its a good game so stopped trying to be better.. FIFA has improved their gameplay & graphics by a huge margin with people obviously working round the clock to get the best game they can, even if its not yet up to the standard of the pro engine..in a word
fifa, despite its flaws, looks and feels like a nextgen game
PES, despite its gameplay advantage, looks and feels like PES09 on the PS2, not the first nextgen PRO…and thats not realy good enough
what have the people at konami been doing for a year?
I’ve been a PES fan excuse me addict since the winning elven 5 game came out. So I was very anxious for PES 2008 to come out in PS3. But when i finally got it, the 1st day that came out I was so dissapointed. I couldn’t believe what my eyes were seeing. The game is terrible, players slide like if they were skating men, lots of bugs. PES 2008 for PS3 is way better. Sincerely dont buy it, take this advice from a PES lover. I’m changing to FIFA till I see some improvement in the next PES.
