PES to be taken ‘back to the drawing board’
Posted by Peter Willis in PES 2008 News on Sat 24 Nov 2007
Pro Evolution Soccer creator Seabass has spoke out about his disapointment with PES 2008, and how he and his team will be going back to the drawing board for PES 2009. In an interview with PSM3 magazine (latest issue #95) he said of PES 2008…
“It’s so far from what we wanted. In fact, we thought about delaying it but different factors meant we had to [release it]. As a developer, we’ve worked the same way since the days of the SNES. We’re simply not set up for multi-platform development”.
Looking ahead to PES 2009 Seabass commented…
“PES 2009 is in development, but after hearing the criticism, we’ll be taking it back to the drawing board. It might not be next year, but it will be soon.”
NOT next year? Konami must be having a laugh. They can’t honestly tell me it’ll take more than a year to correct lag problems, sort out the weak editing mode and add the features longed for by the fans (most of the them very small - Why the hell can’t you do a league any more with a friend?!). The gameplay remains the best available on the market today, that aspect of the game does not need to be started from scratch.

The Japanese and Korean version of WE 2008 doesnt suffer from lag at all… As far as going back to the drawing board, I disagree it would be a good decision. IMO, they just need to continue building on what they have and do a better job of testing their products before releasing it.
i dunno how you can play games online with upto 16 players like COD4 ect and konami cant even get 1vs1 right. edit is an improvement on last years but a major let down compared to pes6 ps2. i think we need more variation, obviously there will be gameplay tweaks as usual, but add more stats and abilities to make defenders better,or c ronaldo run with the ball more, makelele pass the ball more rather than running with it,so characteristics can be made with the players, riquelme barely moving from the attacking mid role, standing there and picking passes.
and please please more animations for everyything, rather than 2 types of slide tackles,2 types of headers,3types of shot or something,3 types of falls when fouled, pretty much 1 dive, more animations with the ref, diff entrance themes. the gameplay doesnt need to go to the drawing board, its everything they have lazily missed that needs to be drawn up. for fuck sake go back to the options of pes5 and build from there, why on earth woould you remove kit selection!so that after hard work to get to a semi as tottenham i play juve and get so pissed off i develop a headache from squinting coz for some strange reason the cpu puts us both in our home kits……
I think I have an idea of why we’re laggy and they’re not. Think about it, what if the problem is that we’re all connected to an asian server? That would explain everything. shevagol did you got to play PES2 or 3? Damn, THOSE
(continued…) were great games. My only fear is that they don’t really go back to the drawing board but if they do, that’s brilliant. PES is losing all it’s trademarks since PES5. PES4 was easy peasy but it was still very fun and realistic, PES5 was scripted as hell. Honestly I’m not too worried about online, because the game itself sucks at this moment. They should just focus on the realism, because that’s what brought me in the first place.
Why doesnt that prick worry about fixing pes2008 instead of writing it off and thinking about 2009?
AAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH! So angry now!
Nofear, there’s no fixing pes2008, there’s too many things to fix. Set pieces are all f*cked up, gameplay is all f*cked up, graphics are all f*cked up the only thing they can and , supposedly will fix, is the lag issues.
OK, so, the interview talks about PES2008 (Shite) & PES2009 (Probably Shite), but, why oh why have they not asked the question everyone wants answered……… IS THERE GOING TO BE A PATCH FOR PES2008 FOR THE LAG ISSUES OR NOT?
Seems a pretty straight question that no one wants to ask! Who’s doing these bloody interviews? Parky?
Wanker!!!,,and nothing else even he knws the game floppd!!
OK what kind of interview is that?
He is talking about next Pes instead of giving us some info about Pes 2008 maybe they think that pes 2008 is sold enough copies and they dont want to waste time to fix the enormous lag.Is there no chance that someone can take this to court after all they mislead there customers.
After this im sure that they wont fix anything.
finally, a good choice.. I think its very wise of them. Pes isn’t what is supposes to be, even not gameplay-wise. they’re not going to make the same mistake again of releasing a game that is not finished.
Hell, i’d rather buy a PES that resembles the best of what it could be at the time every 2 years, than a “not finished” version every year.
What’s wrong with , taking every time it needs to make the game they want to provide us?? That way we probably will get a PES that will blow your mind, on every aspect. Not like Fifa upgrading every year.
Smart Seabass, very smart
Just traded in PES2008 at my local Gamescene store… They gave me £20(They need to start reading some forums. Ended up buying a trade in FIFA08 for my PES2008+£9.99 (bargain).
Sorry to abandon PES. but, I just cannot justify having a broken game at full price sitting in my collection. When I hear about an update to sort out the lag, I am sure I will return to PES, but, for now it’s gonna have to be FIFA i’m afraid. I’ll try FIFA tonight and probably be trading that in as well tomorrow, I just can’t see myself becoming attached to it, but, with all the crap surrounding PES at the moment, I may as well give it a go.
A very let down PES Fan!
It looks to me as though they are saying that next years game isnt going to be any good?! It’s one of those things he’s said, and then probably wished he hadnt!
Also, I dont know if anyone else has noticed, but on the PS3 game, the referee never ever ever calls play back for a foul. One of my mates continously fouls off the ball, on purpose, so when/if he suddenly gets the ball a load of my players are out of position or on the floor still. I know it’s not Konamis fault that my mate plays like an idiot, but the AI should pick up the fact that there are fouls of the ball!!
Another point (I know im being negative) but whenever I score now, it feels like the old FIFA 98 days, when you didnt need to aim, and if you got the power right it goes in top corner every time?!
The game is better than the previous one, without a doubt, just not as much of a step up that you expect on the PS3!
Wow!! less than a month from release and them konami are saying that already? this game gotta be really bad then, hope when they release it here at the US & A, everything will be fixed properly.
video interview with seabass
I think its whats written down about all this
but is the full interview

Well the bastard should have thought about this before hand.
Seriously all games are tested, all i want to know is who tested this game and where do they live?
these people have completely ruined what is a highly rated football simulation game, iam disgusted, i want my £40 back.
Just bring back PES5 (the best football game ever made)
I got a glitch on my 360 game!!! everytime i play against the world all stars or someother team like that, the keeper for the opposition keeps taking all the corners and free kicks!!!
well atleast i unlocked a achievement for scoring more than 40 yards!!
There are TONS of gameplay and AI problems ! Also, the PC version is de-optimized ( if the word even exists )…how can it be that I can play UT3 with hight details at a constant framerate and sometime PES 2008 freezes a little bit ( dont say: “update your drivers” ’cause i’ll roundhouse kick you Chuck Norris style :P )…
Alse, the have taken away some of the best gameplay options : world cup and international match ( uhm…I dont remember how the options are called in english ).
So far, ill keep playing PES6….
I just hope FIFA won’t slack because of the lack of competition next year (that is if PES 2009 is postponed). The only reason EA Sports has gotten this far is because of the faceoff between Konami.
Does any 1 know what is ‘install game data’ what does it actually install
the section on system data menu where u download game data
fuck that, fix this years, make a version when fixed called ‘post pro evolution 2008(sorry for fucking up the orginal)cock knockers
I am bloody disappointed with this version of the PS3 PES 2008, I have been a loyal Konami Winning Eleven fan since Winning Eleven 3 j-league on PS1 and to my great disgust with Seabas’s comment about “other factors” for releasing a fucked-up PES version I will piss and burn on this copy.
If I am not to burn this I want Konami to give us, the loyal followers of PES, a great discount for the next installment of PES 2009 to make up for my hard earned money!!!!
What do you guys think? We bought a shit fucked up PES this year we should be getting a great discount for the next installment.
I want a huge petition!!!!
I’m surprised people aren’t mad at IGN for giving PES 2008 an inflated rating score. Whether it’s because they have in-game advertisement or not, IGN should give honest reviews so people won’t get gipped like this.
Well at least now we know which reviewers to trust.
But a fucked up PES is just wrong and everybody involved should be ashamed of themselves.
Well, I’ve played FIFA08 for a few hours now and I can say that it is just not up to PES with regard to gameplay. Yeah it looks nice, has the licenses etc, but, it just aint got the soul. It’s still annoyingly unresponsive and anyone who tells you it’s a more “considered passing game” this year, are, quite frankly, mental! Sluggish gameplay does not equate to “considered passing” it just means it’s slow, unresponsive and you never really feel like you are controlling the game. Please Konami, give us a patch for online or I’ll be playing Mass Effect over Christmas.
pes 2008 is sick i dont no why everybody say its poor its so much better than fifa
@ pes2008
i agree the pes game is “sick” and needs to get better .
lmao @ my slang
Fix the lag and I will be happy. I am happy with the single player as it is now, i really enjoy playing it. Online however makes me want shit
TO shit that should be :p
i think u should make pes 2009 this year
PES2008 is gr8t!!…But needs improvement
LOL….the problem is….i imagine we all bought Pro…..no matter how crap the game is (or the features anyway)….they Win….KONAMI have won we all bought it thats all that matters….if u wanted to stir things up dont buy the next one….but who would do that….im afraid i wouldnt….
It’s understandable if they don’t release it next year. I think that’s due to the fact that the flaws you listed, Peter, are not the only ones the game has, there are much deeper and important issues concerning gameplay, the lack of evolution and ‘arcadeization’ the game shows. Going back to the drawing board is what I felt was needed but didn’t expect to happen, so I’m ecstatic with the news.
Personally, I don’t care if they take more than 1 or 2 years, provided the result reflects the effort put into it. I’d like to see a football game that stirrs the genre as much as Crysis did for FPSs. If they have to release a pro evo every two or three years, so be it, provided they are able to give us a classic game that can entertain us until the next version arrives, and not one that is boring after a mere two months.
Did anyone got shocked by the cutted end of the interview with Seabass?
“Oh, btw, off topic, I don’t know where this rumour comes from that I call myself Seabass because I like fishing. I just call myself that because I love Sushi & that’s what I’ve been doing the last 2 years: Eating Sushi from the money you gamers spend on our products made with minimum attempt. Hell, am I having a laugh, what drawing board? I spend 16 hours of my day stuffing myself with Sushi, even my genitals start smelling like it as I haven’t got time to wash myself, let alone fix a broken game or improve next years version….But the last laugh is still on me!”
ALL I CAN SAY IS PRO EVO HAS DIED TODAY FOR ME RIP
Lol so what the fuck they just gonna leave us to dry with PES 2008? What a fucking farce.
I bought this fucking buggy PS3 just so I can play PES 2008, which turns to be the most broken game I ever played. How did they manage to fuck it up so much and then leave us to dry.
Tossers.
What we can do as a consumer is simply straight forward.
1. Report this to the correct bodies.
2. Report this to Watch Dog. (if we do this, the impact of Konami as a brand name will be in jeopardy, as we (consumers) will lose faith on their market.
3. Ask for a refund.
4. Ask for a refund and still keep the game (worth a try)
If anyone wants to take action here’s the top suggestions, personally, I reckon watch dog needs to take action.
Personally if this goes live on air….. Who knows what kinda impact it will have on the company! Maybe they wont be a pro evo 2009!.
Please post your views.
Sunny I see where you’re coming from. You provide the links for us to send in our compliants and lets see how many people we can get to complain to watchdog!!
It’d be a laugh anyways if nothing else!
Below is the letter now sent to watch dog! Please either copy and paste this or write your review. Link is this - http://www.bbc.co.uk/consumer/tv_and_radio/watchdog/index.shtml
The problem with this game is straight forward. We as consumers have waited for this game for a long period of time. Hence I bought my PS3 purely for the release of this game. Further to my disappointment I/we as players have found the game as a awful game and it should have not been released. Problems with the game are as follows.
1. Interference with game (lag problems online and offline) makes it unplayable at times. Konami response to this is. Buy a HD TV. Install the game on your hard drive and turn off the commentary and stadium effects. It does reduce it but we paid for a full game with full effects not half the game!
2. Because of the lag, they have halved the price within 2 months of release. (This is not right for those consumers who paid for this at full price of £50.)
3. For a further reading into this game please visit http://www.pesgaming.com/blog/
We would much appreciate you look into this matter and suggest anything we can do or maybe you can do?
Also attached is a link released by the makers

Many Thanks
I agree with sunny. I feel ripped off. I paid £40 for this shit and less than a month later they release a perfectly working version in japan. now theyre telling me to buy it next year and everything should be fine????
I want them to fix this bullshit
sorry for doubly post, but they halved the price within 1 month.
the game came out a month ago today
so does this men we can take he game back to the shop for a full refund
if something dont work it shouldnt be on sale.
can you imagine samsung saying oh this plasma tv hasnt got a picture but we have to release it next week
what a joke.
and all promises of pes2009 gonna be better didnt they say that last year
and what does “maybe not next year but soon” supposed to mean.
Just written my letter to Watchdog:
Dear Watchdog
I have been a Sony Playstation and Pro Evolution Soccer fan since both of their releases, however, this year I feel completely ripped off.
I understand that it was Konami’s first version of PES on PS3 but to release a game of this quality and then charge £50 for it is outrageous, especially since I bought the PS3 purely for this game.
The game stalls and lags significantly not only during online play, but even worse, during offline play making it virtually unplayable at times. Konami’s response to other people in the same situation has been to buy a HDTV!!
To make matters worse the shops have now reduced the price of the game to £24.99 within a month of its release no doubt to reflect the poor sales and negative reaction and I’ve read that stores are refusing to accept returns as it is deemed ‘an acceptable product’ and thus not faulty. Furthermore, Konami have since released the Asian version without any of the lagging problems!
I would like to know if Konami are going to release a patch for the PS3 version and if so when. I would also like them to reinburse me the extra £25 I spent to get this game on release day.
Many thanks
Come on guys!!
Send your letters into Watchdog and let Konami know that we are not accepting this sort of quality for our money! At the very least they might be able to find out when the patch will be released!
Just click on this link and follow it through: http://www.bbc.co.uk/consumer/tv_and_radio/watchdog/index.shtml
Remember to post a copy on here so we can see how many have done it!
Great idea Sunny. Lets hope we can get something done about it!
cheers mate… hopefully we get to this on watchdog! personally i love the game its brilliant! but it makes to hard to play when you got issues with it and its not right! oh btw primo1 u really sure its been only 1 month seen they halved the price… if thats the case i feel well pissed off!
Back to the drawing board? Are you having a laugh?
I’m happy with my 360 version. I just want to be able to play it online.
Konami. Practise some of your Japanese Samurai code of honour, and give us an online patch. It’s the least you can do. Stop being so fucking negative and lazy about it.
i think everyone should just stop whinging! it’s only a game. some of you should get out more!!! losers
i agree with anonymous, the games not even bad the framerate shouldn’t be like dat but its not a substantial enough issue for you to send the game back, and so what u cant edit the teams live with it! when it comes to gameplay its 10/10..
you tossers expect too much
exactly! lag this, can’t edit that, licences the other! it is bad that there are only 2 football games for the ps3. i haven;t got the full game of pes2008 but have played the demo of it and also fifa and frankly pes shits on fifa from a great height!!!
and like watchdog would ever investigate pes2008 when there are loads of child’s car seats going wrong and cars breaking down. you lot are deluded! i’m of to pesfan.com!!!!
Your comments are valid anons and I agree that the game isn’t that bad. All I want to know is when the patch is coming out and with Konami remaining quiet we should take it upon ourselves to find out, and what better way than through watchdog? Anything else would be a bonus.
Having said that, spare a thought for the ps3 owners who are playing it on a normal CRT TV. I’m not one but I’ve tried it on my older TV and it really IS that bad.
am back from pesfan.com, it’s boring over there! the things is though, does anyone actually know whether a patch would make any difference and konami haven’t mentioned it yet. i wouldn’t hold your breath!
Dear Watchdog
Are you interested in Playstation games and how crap they are? Didn’t think so. Sorry to waste your time.

Sad and in need of a life
There is some sort of patch available for Pro EVo on PS3. No Shit, i’ve just read a message in the forum about it and tried it myself and it is saying download software version 1.1!!
Please be the patch!!
Its a 130mb download so it looks as if it is finally here!!
Will post once I’ve tried it
Does anyone know where the face scan funny image thread has gone? I can’t seem to find it anymore and wanted to upload my own efforts!
A patch will probably never be available since the problem comes from the hard code in the game engine. A development error from Konami which wasn’t found during beta testing. (if there was any) I think we have been duped into buying faulty goods, and i think we are well within our rights to demand a refund or some compensation.
Well I’ve just played around a little bit since downloading the patch and the gameplay does seem a bit smoother and definitely slight slower. As for online play it is still very stuttery but give the time of day it is no worse than it ever was with pro evo 6 on PS2. Guess it’ll be one to try at non peak times. Not looked at edit mode though to see if there are any improvements here with regards to 8kits.
where did you get the patch from mn9ajas?
You just have to put pro evo into the PS3 whilst you are conected to the network and it automatically recognises you are playing with version 1 and askes you to download version 1.1
oh right, will give it a go. cheers
what do you mean connected to the network do you mean playstation store sorry dont really understand.
cheers
ben, you’re thick.
no i am not tried what he said and it doesnt work so FUCK YOU!
ok ok! touchy!!! having a bad day?!
how can I update my game ? is there any website where I can dowlnad it ? HELP !
sorry bruce it has been one of those days.
who the heck is bruce?!
WEblog has the ps3 option file out now with kits, updates etc.
is he in charge of the sheep dip?! strueth!
Heres what I did: I put my ethernet cable into my ps3, turned it on and it automatically signed in. I put the pro evo disc into the ps3 and after the ‘playstation 3′ loading graphic it said that I was using old software and that version 1.1 was available.
Hope this helps
Unfortunately you can still only save up to 8 kits though as I’ve just tried.
lets bomb that f****k konami seabuss

Nice to know that you have so much going on in your life that you feel the need to post idiotic comments as shown in the above statement. Dick!
first of all I’m sorry for what’s happening ,been a fan of this game & hearing your anger really piss me off with konami,I not familiar with all the facts but for what I assumed the game has plenty of glitches and a very low perfomance online also I don’t know what’s konami doing to fix the problems but if you have this many I know for a fact a patch is not going to solve, here in usa we are anticipating the release since fifa 08 was a total fiasco not only still has the stupid controles but graphically it’s problaby the worst for a ps3 game, ea didn’t want to get their butts of the sofa and pretty much gived us a ps2 game for a ps3!!!! anyway..the best solution a this moment is to complain with playstation or microsoft depends wich hardware you own ,because is a responsability of the hardware manufactores to test sofware not only capable of play to standards but stop it from been harmful wich in this case they fail miserable,I’m sure they wil fix it,because what they don’t want a this time is a bad publicity not on holiday season, once againg I’m sorry but there’s a lesson to be learn:never get rid off your old games unlees you see the new ones.(buy assassins creed is fking awesome)
assache: WHATEVER WANKER!!
‘Anonymous’.
You are a twat. You do realise this is a pes forum?
Now, I’m guessing someone who goes out and spends £500 on a HD-TV, and then £450 on a PS3, would probably be dying to play the latest installment of pes. Let’s say they’ve spent £700. They have a right to moan about it, on a forum dedicated to the game they’ve just purchased.
As for getting out more. In this weather? Are you serious?
Yep. You are definately a twat!
I think you’re a little confused Kiraldo, Anonymous was calling assache a wanker as he was mocking people who were complaining about the game, unless I’ve misread your post??
i didn’t realise i would cause such as discussion! i shan’t darken the door of pesgaming.com again as none of you can’t take a joke. or will i?!………………………….
I was refering to the earlier ‘Anonymous’ who posted nr beginning of the thread calling people tossers and sad. Just found it ironic, someone posting in a forum, telling people to get out more.
Surely they, themselves, are in the forum, and are probably registered, posting away just like all the other ‘non cool’ people?

wats going on we sud be vent angers on the bastards konami …. calm down!!
Dear PES 2008 players,
I told you this when the demo came out that this is a bad game, but then I got many responses that I was crazy and that it is a great game. Hahahaha I guess I have the last laugh. The best game is J.League winning eleven 2007, a true great game, the only thing konami has to do is convert this game for the playstation 3 and Xbox 360 and update the squads and shirts of the european teams and you have all you ever wanted. The graphics then may not to be next-gen, but you can play a super soccer game and that’s all that matters.I can’t wait that that would happen and that I can play with my favourite team Kashima Antlers on Xbox Live.
Til then many I wish everyone a lot of soccerfun on the playstation 2 with J.League winning eleven 2007 club championship.
My gamertag is marvelous me on Xbox live for those want to play NBA live 08 and NHL 08 against me, that are two super next-gen games that I play now more then ever, because I was right that PES 2008 is a laugh.
Greetings Jan Kiefte, the Neterlands.
my work here is done……………
What makes Pro Evo less realistic this year when playing Master League is a real shame:
1. There are hardly any injuries to players anymore and when players go off injured they always come back on uninjured.
2. The other scorelines are just so unrealistic. The average score of a football game according to Konami is 1-0. Its pathetic. Teams like Man U, Chelsea etc often score 3,4,5 goals in a game. I’m playing Middlesbrough in the Master League and after 15 games I’ve scored 35 goals. The next highest scoring team is Newcastle with 12 goals scored. How unrealistic is that!!!!
3. The computer opposition very rarely foul with sliding challenges or get booked for harsh challenges, even on top player settings. This is very unrealistic again.
Konami you don’t have a clue!!
he this game pes 2008 eight is terrible, but i know why you made it so shitty because konami want only one thing, money money money, and more money, so know little children can play this easy gameplay and simple too, with thes kind of behavior you will loose you quality of clients who are playing pes for almost ten years,we better boycot this shit , and konami or pes you can go together with fifa because this game is not diffrent with them.
a few things in this game> the rebounds goals are now more then ever
the defence is not like as before, what about the teamvision they dont work like it use to, and online is this game just a cheap gameplay in his total.
konami we want more quality and dont mess with us my voice is 64 euro worth, multipled with at least a miljoen voices , if you can count start to make a new worthy pes. i hope you got the message
greetings pes player since 1997
