PES 2008 Launches in North America
Posted by Peter Willis in PES 2008 News on Thu 13 Mar 2008
Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 has finally made it’s annual appearance state-side, some 5 months after being released in PAL regions. The game, which is seemingly unchanged from it’s European counterpart, has been released on every format but the Wii - that version will follow next week (some 10 days EARLIER than Europe!).

Transfers are completely out of date, Sunderland’s star striker Kenwyn Jones is not even in the game. Meanwhile no January transfers were complete. Even the transfers made near to the end of the August deadline have been inexplicably neglected.
So, to our readers in North America - how are you enjoying your PES 2008 experience?
——
Don’t forget, gamers from around the world can enter our GOTM March/April contest.

Sounds like Wii is getting the only real PES 2008 as far as changes go.
And it comes out next week (March 18) in the US on Wii, and March 28 in Europe. So hang tight!
I just bought it earlier this night. BTW Ebgames/gamestop is the worst place to buy games, I wish they would go out of buisness. I hate them now… AGAIn.. I went to my local bestbuy and bought the game no question asked. EBgames doesnt even have it yet.
As for the game, its abosolutely perfect. I didnt want to critique pes 2007 on 360 but the one thing that I didnt like was the player movement. IMO 07 suffered from BOX movement syndrome. You could move like a box up down left right, it was very last gen. FInally in PES 2008 you have natural movement. Your analog moves where you want it to. In general the whole field is usuable. YOu can make better cuts you can make better moves. The additon of the DIVE is my favorite. I love getting yellow cards as Italian players. ROFL. This game is amazing. I am not into customization so all the stuff they still dont have ps2 version has doesnt mean anything to me. Aslong as it has a master league and variable team strats its all good to me and this game has exactly that. The AI is just right. I love this game. To bad I have to SLEEP! I cant wait for tommmarrow.
I bought the game today and i am so disappointed. I played the UK version on Xbox 360, it was perfect but the PS3 version is total crap. The game is too fast and unrealistic. Referees are even more annoying than ever booking players for nothing. Players with good shooting can score from anywhere. I took a free kick with Adriano from 40 yards out and scored in my first game.
Online play is a joke, you cannot play if your connection is not %100 clear, even if it is you rarely get a game without breakup. Fifa has the perfect online system with maybe 1 interruption per game. As for the transfers done in the summer Konami has not kept up with anything. I feel like i am playing Pro Evolution 2006. I have no idea what Konami have been doing since the release of PES 2008 in Europe but i think they have been sitting on their asses. Makes me wonder where they will go from here.
By the way Cristiano Ronaldo is world class in real life, on PES 2008 he is unstoppable, a total machine. So fake!!
Picked it up last night, and have to say… its much different from both 07 & the demo that was on xbox live.
the demo was way too fast and arcadey, but i feel like the actual game is slowed down to an appropriate level. passing is a bit doesnt use COM assistance as much which will take some getting used to.
one thing for me at least, is that i have no choice now but to learn how to use the Super Cancel feature. i never learned to use it in 07, and the button combo is awkward IMO, but it almost impossible to get your players to move when a ball is kicked in their direction… kind of frustrating, but it just means i have to learn super cancel.
overall, the game seems like an upgrade from 07, and as someone else mentioned seems more fluid and less boxy than last year, which will also take some getting used to.
I have both games, Eurpean and American version , they are the same, didn’t change much, just diferent sponsors and it has all the patches on the DVD, so the game is finish, no problems with lag or framerate during the offline games.
the guys who didn’t played the european version should love it and don’t have to wait for any patches to fix anything.
I played it last night and liked it overall. It does seem a little fast paced and working the ball around is a little tougher than 07 but dribbling a movement is more fluid and less boxy so I can get my players to where I want them to go. I’m playing on a 50″ plasma HD 720p screen and I see some framerate during cut scenes and this LOD line in the pitch about 1/3 up my screen which keeps catching my eye. Overall, the game is fun and with all the cut scenes, pagentry, and emotion, very engaging. I can’t wait to start my Master League (though I hate not having my Gooners without the real kits)
Played a bunch of games on XBL last night. The on-line play is very disappointing. The ball seemingly has a mind of its own, often jumping from one part of the pitch to another. I hit a free kick into the wall, it bounced off a player in the wall and the next frame was in the net. I have seen players loose control of the ball only to have it magically appear back on there feet. Very strange. I should say though that the off line play is awesome.
so what the hell have they been doing with it for the last 5 months, nothing!!!!konami sadden me with there laziness sometimes
So far i played 5 or 6 games (Ps2), is basically the same as 2007, just a little faster, tied defense yes, terrible “sponsors”, is a good game ill say, not as excellent as I xpected to be,—
OHH yes don’t buyg from eb games, they dont even know what is out or comming, no idea of the best soccer game, they were trying to sell me the Fifa crap…
being a huge fan of pes, i must say, this game is horrible. the online is a joke, and tats besides the fact tat we cant play a match against those in another country. So the ranking doesnt even mean anything. the offline isnt great either. creating a player has gotten much worse, the masters league is worse also since u cant really create an original team with any player you want since your suppose to buy all the players, and all you have is 1000 points, which u can only get two good players with. the game is way too fast. I love how its unpredictable, but the game is still too face to even appreciate that. even the main menu is trash. i am so disappointed. the winning eleven on ps2 last year was so much better. Thtat was probably the best soccer game ever. on 360 i’d say fifa is the best, and i used to hate fifa. however i appreciate EA really pushing forward, especially since Seabass doesnt even seem to give a crap anymore. im just mad becaue i sold fifa to get this garbage.
I like the game I have it for the ps3. fifa is garbage compared to PES.
I WOULD LIKE TO SEE MY TEAM “BOLIVIA” FOR THE NEXT PES!!!
The game is not as good as I expected it to be… im tempted to return it and buy FIFA.
Comparing fifa to PES is like comparing The Mars Volta to Fall Out Boy. (rockbands)
Fall Out Boy might be a commercial success. But The Mars Volta is alot more technically advanced.
Next Gen Fifa is awful. The Graphics keep getting more Gel Like. And it is still a computer generated physics type game. The Algorithms in the PES Environment is far more advanced.
WOW THIS GAME IS CRAP AND I AM GONNA PUT MY COPY ON EBAY! I AM REALLY PISSED OFF AT HOW CRAP THIS GAME IS! AS SOON AS I PUT IT ON AND PLAYED IT I REALIZED THAT IT WAS NO WAY NEAR AS GOOD AS FIFA 08 FOR THE PS3 AND IT MAKES ME WONDER IFKONAMI HAVE LOST IT? I USED TO PLAY THIS GAME ALL THE TIME FOR THE PS2 AND NEVER PLAYED FIFA………BUT NOW FIFA HAVE WON THE BATTLE!
THIS GAME IS VERY SUPER BAD, I WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED. WHY DID KONAMI DID THIS>????????????? THE GAME WAS THE BEST EVER, BUT NOW ITS UNBELIVABLE BAD, IN EVERY WAY THE PENALTY KICKS, THE ONLINE GAMING, THE WAY MENU IS SET UP, THE MUSIC, THE UNCLEAR WRITINGS, THE SMALL PLAYERS AND FLAGS AND TEAMS, EVERYTHING IS VERY BAD PLUS THE WAY OF CHATING AND ROOMS ONLINE. TRULY I AM VERY SAD BCUZ THIS GAME WAS MY FAVORITE
played 5 games on live.. a lttle better than the euro version on P3… off line way better.. almost no slowdowns..
european version is shit and if there is no change in the american version it must be shit aswell.come on how lazy are they not to put the transfers in unless they are working real hard on PES 2009 GOD PLEASE make the next version be better or my favourite game will be gone forever and I will have to play shitty FIFA
This game doesn’t have the English Premier League. That takes away like 40% of the best European teams right now. That really sucks.
The Premier League are in, they just don’t have the real team names. You will need to edit those yourself or download an updated Option File.
After a couple days…not just 1…here are my comments.
I have played since winning eleven 6 international, all on ps2. This is the 1st year I have bought the xbox version.
Yes, the menu is different, yes navigation is different. But ths is all cosmetic changes and people are just being resistant to change. SO it’s a non issue.
Yes, the game is missing some key licenses and transfers. Big deal, edit it.
What it all boils down to is game play. PES2008 is the best game play in regards to realistic soccer (football) physics, tactics, and presentation. No other game can do this yet.
Maybe I am just old, but growing up games never had real names, nor did the even try to fake them. We used our imagination. Kids these days want everything given to them on a silver platter. It took me 60 minutes to complete team edits and a few name edits, then do some transfers. No big deal.
My only grip is passing is harder / different. And like WE&i, I will get used to it in a few weeks and again it will be a non issue.
On line xbox live play is a disaster. No doubt abbout it. But frankly, the online community is not very fun. Too many snot nosed kids spending mommy and daddies money. Who wants to play when 95% of the on line players pick the top 2 or 3 teams (braca, brazil, man u).
Master league is where this game shines. And to the joker i post #10 BAHA….whats the point of playing master league if you have an open check book to start and can load your team up. Try playing the game with the scrubs, develop your talent and play the game as it is intended.
I for one and 95% satisfied with the game. On line needs to be fixed. But I can see my self playing this game all summer long with no gripes what so ever.
Thanks seabass.
I bought the game on the 12th and have played about 25 games in my master league as well as a few online for the 360. This is the first time I’ve played it on the 360, but I’ve played the past 3 or 4 versions on the ps2 so I decided to go straight to top player difficulty. I find it frustrating that my players seem to refuse to move without the ball or make runs as I watch the computer passing and moving everywhere, but it does make the game much more challenging as I continue to get used to it. Overall I’m satisfied with the graphics and the gameplay excluding some annoying things like no one making runs and very difficult passing. Like before mentioned, the online play is absolutely ridiculous. I fail to understand how Konami can produce such a horrible online experience with a next gen console. When I played WE9 on ps2 the online play was better than this which is unbelieveably stupid. I don’t think Konami put forths the effort to satisfy their online community or understands that the future of gaming is moving towards online play. I can only hope that they pay more attention to this aspect of the game in the future so PES/WE can take advantage of the potential it has to be a well rounded soccer game.
AFTER 3 DAYS, ABOUT 25-3O GAMES PLAYED ALREADY SINCE I BOUGHT THE GAME. ILL SAY I’M NOT TOTALLY DISSAPOINTED AS I WAS IN THE BEGGINING, I WENT TO RENT FIFA 08, I PLAYED 2 GAMES & I JUST COULDN’T HANDLE IT NO MORE, HOW CAN SOMEBODY SAYS THAT FIFA IS BETTER THAN PES? FOR MANY OF US THIS VERSION ISN’T PROBABLY WHAT WE REALLY EXPECTED, BUT AT LEAST WE HAVE A “NEW VERSION” WITH MINOR CHANGES, WITH SOME “TERRIBLE COSMETIC CHANGES” BUT WE SHOULD BE THANKFUL FOR THE “PERFECT GAME PLAY, FOR THE REAL FEEL OF FUTBOL (SOCCER), AND ALSO FOR THE “EDIT” MODE, THAT LET US PLAY WITH OUR OWN IMAGINATION, CREATIVITY, MAKING OUR OWN LEAGUES, OUR OWN TEAMS…ONLINE IS A DISASTER, BUT ALL WHAT YOU HAVE TO IS CALL F\YOUR FELLAS AND PLAY AND YELL AND SCREAM IN FRONT OF THEM IN YOUR LIVING ROOM, THATS WHAT THIS GAME DOES FOR US… PLAY THE BEST SOCCER GAME EVER,, AND IS STILL THE BEST… HOPE THE 2009 GETS BETTER..
Has anyone one seen a US specific option-file for download? All the user created files are european versions and don’t work with the US game!
This version seems the same as last year’s verision which is a let down. It wouldn’t be a let down if I thought last year’s version was an improvement, but I didn’t think last year’s verion was an improvement.
It doesn’t matter, within 6 months I will adapt and love this game.
ps2 online isn’t that bad…although us pes players are like battered wives: we make excuses for the behavior of our husband (konami) and are happy when we get minimally decent treatment (a semi-functioning online mode). I wish Konami would hire EA’s guys or something. I’ll chip in for their salary. You would, too.
Next version’s number one goal: Good Online Mode and Updated Rosters via Online Mode
please santa
I just want to ask what the hell is wrong with the defence in pes2008 next gen, they don’t close the player and open highways in the middle of the defence.
peace
just picked up a copy of this game 2 days ago. At first it seemed to be the same as 2007 but there are so many new things with the ball. But i wish the transfers and the kits and the cleats were updated im already tired of doing it my self. Its overall a good game but i havent tryed online yet. CMON CELTIC
It’s funny/strange how they label the genre of music that is playing…that’s so weird
I have read all the European respnses on Amazon and i was very unhappy and disappointed. However, after buying the american version, I believe that many of the euro responses were made based on a first impression basis. The game does have problems, the arms of the players are a bit too long, the replays are pretty bad and if the american version is better than the Euro I don’t want to see euro replays. I did not try online yet. The game is far better than its previous version in many other things. The proportion field/player is much better as well as the non participant players rationality. The ability of the players are more realistic. Overall, the game is far better than what I had seen on reviews…worth buying…still needs improvements in some basic features… 8/10
the game is just too frustrating. i understand that everyone appreciates the gameplay, which is really amazing, but the reasons for playing the game just arent there. THe online is horrible, the masters league is annoying becuase the teams tat get promoted are foreign teams so its dumb to see bayern munich get promoted to the italian league. I do like the idea of having to win leagues in order to unlock classic players or not, but i think buying them were much better. i just feel like there is so much work needed outside the gameplay. some of u have patches and wat not which makes all these problems non existant for you, which is great, but most of us in the US dont have the luxury of doing that, and we are stuck with a great gameplay with no real purpose of playing, without the fun of enjoying the passion of the E.P.L, or the champions league for that matter.
I have to say based on the comments for the Euro version, plus the fact I’m still using PS2, I’m going to wait until next year and get 2009 (assuming it’s an improvement) along with a next-gen console… probably 360 instead of PS3, but I have time to decide.
Until then it’s WEPES 2007 on the PS2… I’m savin’ my money for later!
I bought the game on Wednesday (day after launch day)and I’m loving it so far. Played once online, kind of awkward at times with the ball jumping unexpectedly from side to side but the times it did, it didn’t affect the game at all. I’m almost finishing the first season in the Master League (default players are a joke with there low stamina. Game play beats FIFA hands down. I did however find a small annoying glitch, me being puertorican prefer the Spanish commentary a lot more but every time I restart the game it resets back to english commentary =0(. With they would fix that part. Other than that I am a happy buyer.
Is xbox 360 online play any better than PS3s??
we are working on the PS3 option file, if anyone here would like to visit www.pesfan.com enter the ps3 forums.
the option file will be release on GOOD FRIDAY on pesgaming.com
i got the game the day it came out and the game play is good as i expected it to be. The online is not that good because of the ball jumping around but i feel like if your good enough you can over come that. oh yeah if anybody would want to play games for money then go to www.gamersaloon.com . Im on there so send me a message to set up a game. Even if you wouldnt want to play then just check the site out and see how it works.
Hey there guys- the XBOX online I feel is better than than the PS#, however the difference is not too much. It may come down to personal preference. If you know someone who has the system that you don’t have I would suggest checking it out first. Check out my site if you have a second.

I have the PS2 version and a lot has been taken out. There is no golden/silver goal, no dive, no changing of the amount of players on a wall… Why is this?
whats up
I’ve had the game for a few weeks now, and it’s started freezing every time I turn on the game for more than 5 minutes. Any tips/ideas? This is just embarrassing. For them to put this game out is a joke. If PES ‘09 isn’t infinitely better, I’m going to rage…
I absolutely hate this game..i have it for the PS2 and it is a load of crap and it pi##es me off till no end..The Ai is so unfair..if the game wants to score a goal it will make sure that it does by pulling off miraculous through balls out of nowhere..i did a test with this theory of mine yesterday and what makes me believe it is true is that i stood still with my players and just let the computer run freely with the ball..they would be one on one with the keeper and miss time and time again..i tried it a couple of times and the Ai only scored about twice..The AI will also make sure that you score when they see fit for you to do so..I hate this game and i gotta get rid of it in a hurry before i break my PS2 controller over this crap
