Hands-on: FIFA 2008 vs. PES 2008
Posted by Peter Willis in PES 2008 News on Fri 07 Sep
Gameplayer (Australian gaming website) have published an in-depth look at the battle between FIFA 2008 and PES 2008. The winner? PES of course, but like I have being saying all summer - the gap IS closing!
What this ultimately means is that, bar the few gamers who want to try their luck at the A-League or give the new Be-A-Pro mode a whirl, very few PES gamers will make the leap to FIFA in this iteration. Alternatively, FIFA fans that give PES a solid session may very well ‘transfer’ the other way. But we tend to think that PES’s number is almost up because, despite the gap in gameplay quality, FIFA is closing in and it will only narrow further as EA master their rebuilt engine.

Having ready your link (thank-you for posting it) I am hardly suprised to see you quote the only negative part of the review - why?
Why do you continue to provide us with a negative edge on PES 2008?
While we are all aware Fifa is getting better, that does not mean we want to hear someone harp on about.
PES 2008 looks so promising and the undoutbed conclusion of that review is PES is amazing.
Please stop being an titty head.

James, if all we do every year is praise praise praise - Konami are not going to listen. It’s time we stopped accepting the half-assed efforts of the last 5 years and stopped saying ‘GOOD JOB GUYS, THE BEST GAME EVER!’… yes, we know it’s a great game, and yes it’s better than the last effort, but it’s one step forward to EA’s 2. And yes, I KNOW EA started off at least 20 steps behind, but it’s not any more.
Personally, I think Konami took a huge leap by adding the diving function. I think that some people don’t understand the huge impact that it can have on the game. Some keep complaining about how little Konami improve the pes series, but the diving function is a big step. Especially if the function gets annoying, for example if people earn like 3 penalty kicks a match because they keep diving, then the game can get frustrating and end up resulting in some pes fans to play fifa.
I won’t believe it till i see it. But having FIFA around is positive as it keeps Konami on their toes as a matter of fact we love that their still around. EA might be closing the gap but it won’t happen overnight; at least not in ‘08 and it’s gonna take a lot to convince the puritan PES users to give it a try. Believe me when i say this as I belong to a league of 30 players in my hometown none of who are interested in the EA FIFA game. You could have all the licenses in the world and the graphics and the sound but it all comes down to game play.
fifa sounds good but will it it be realistic that is one of its main flaws where chelsea will be getting relegated and sunderland winning the league,in pes it never happens like that and in fifa everyone sells their best players.what is with that?..its going to be the same as last year, good for a month and then you will start to notice all the problems and just leave it there until it gathers cobwebs..dont listen to peter buy pes and will last for you until next year..
Jimmi either read what I bloody say or just don’t comment at all. I am not telling people to buy FIFA. PES 2008 will be better.
PES is great bad thing master league sucks. Even if konami does not provide al licences, it should do a realisic master league as fifa does. I love the fifa master league but hate the gameplay. If you combined them, you would have the best game ever. but konami should give us that gift… a well deserved life like master league. Ive been seeing posts and posts since the last 2 years with the same complaints and KONAMI simply does not listen. That is what can make us PES lovers turn over. Hated PES 5, turned to FIFA hated it but the master league was entretaining…till PES 6. Gameplay is the most important thing I agree, but is is no challenge for KONAMI designers to do something about it.
petey calm down!!!!the way you are talking about pes is disgraceful, you are encouraging more people to stay away from it and buy fifa..
I feel your passion Pete. Look at the +ve’s in PES 2008. FiFa has come in leaps & bounds because they were so, so far behind PES. Competition is good, & it’s only going to get better.
From the same article
“PES plays better: at least in the preview code. For all its amazing technical advances, FIFA’s engine just can’t keep pace with the human mind, and PES’s can. In FIFA you find yourself constantly willing players to turn a little quicker, pass a little faster, run into those huge gaps. In PES the game is with you, all the way down the flank and into the box.”
Peter I see that you know all about gaming and probably are right about everything but I would just like to add my point of view..As I am a BIG BIG fan of soccer games and only soccer games, last year I bought FIFA only bacause it came out a few days before PES, later when I got my hands on PES I considered FIFA a waste of money..Sorry to all FIFA fans but that’s only what I think…also I dont’t think the diving button is going to do much harm on the gameplay like Baha Says, look on the bright side of it..having a few “raws” with your mates “was it a panalty or not!” :) If Inzaghi can fool the referee once or twice in one match why wouldn’t I :)But I belive in 99% of diving you will get booked! :) Nice moves I saw in the trailer :) I also read that thay have added an option when players “scream” when thay want the ball, just wonder what they say :)
Wish KONAMI had licensed more teams..

This peace of text made me decide not to buy Fifa, as this is the problem EVERY year… Can’t wait for PES to come out!
Ive played the Fifa 08 demo. I played Fifa 07 and 08 is a lot better. In a way you are still fighting with the game engine to get your expression of the game across but there isnt much wrong with it. Its not pro gameplay thats for sure but theres not much more you can say negatively about it.(unless your just hating) Whenever I play Fifa and go back to pro evo after, I feel my game on pro improves. You guys should try it instead of guessing how good or bad it is. You may find room for both! Who knows????
i too hav recently downloaded fifa 08 just to see what all the hype over fifa is about, and in all honesty i still think fifa is a wasted game, even so much that i unsuprisinly prefferd PES 6 to fifa 08. Fifa is ment to be the better game acording to blind fifa fans and yet the colours are too bright and unrealistic, the game play is slow, the players perfomances are rubish: passing, running, dribbling is all very poor in comparrison to PES, not only that but jus because PES doesn’t have every licence in the world, they leave that window open for creative people or for true fans of football who jus love to play a more realistic game of football! which by the way fifa doesn’t.
i just hope they sort out the defending in pes2008. the defensive ai was beyond a joke in pes6 and completley ruined the game for me, it was so unrealistic it was ridiculos.
I think one thing that bugs me is “speeding” up the game. i prefer that the game is as real as possible and when the developers speed things up it just feels like an arcade game to me. i wish they would leave in the game speed option so some of us can choose to play it at the slowest speed.
I would just like to add that i have played both new pre released versions of the game and i have found that Pes 2088 is better in Game play than fifa 2008.
The One Main Thing to remember from a marketing point of view is that neither EA or Konami will never give us the true soccer game were all aspects of league, cup and total common within their programming threshold of soccer/player physics are all rolled into one.
Every year they release (With Too Much Hype) their so called best soccer game ever and like junkies we are fooled.
A tweak in gameplay here or a little graphical addition there and they sell us the same product engine from 5 years ago.
Just look a the game advancements of other games and software in general and you would soon understand were i am coming from with regards to EA and Konami.
We Are True Fans, who play the game, watch the game and love the game.
But EA & Konami only see us as their financial investment.
How much money Have EA & Konami made world wide from their soccer titles?
Did they ever listened or done anything about any of the consumer complaints or wish lists? ANSWER = NOPE
So next years release will be nothing more than little tweak and polish which will bring in millions!

Sorry guys,
I have been pro evo since number 1 as FIFA was a waste of space. Since playing the demo of PES I said no way this is crap - look at the speed damn it!
Think PES has sat on its laurels 1 season to long. FIFA is the winner this year.
Do hope PES is back on form next year tho!!! :)
p.s. before anyone says it ill stop them. Im not interested in graphics of licenses. FIFA was just the better game hands down.

Chim, u need a slap! The demo of PES 2008 wasn’t a completed version of the game with just a tiny exhibition match on it, it was still work in progress! I assumed everyone would know that! The game is twice as good as PES 6, so get out and buy the game and stop being GAY!
