Is it time to get excited about PES 2009?
Posted by Peter Willis in PES 2009 News on Fri 04 Jul
Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 is still a long 3 and a half months away, but following last weeks press release comes more “news” about the new game.
At the IDEF event last week (basically a trade show that’s exclusively for distributors and not press) in France an image was leaked which gave a description of what to expect from PES 2009. From the 3 short paragraphs (in French), WeArePES representative and long-time PES addict ThomasGOAL translated it and divulged the following:
- New exceptional ambassador (a new star for the games box - PESGaming continues to back a Messi/Torres combination)
- A lot of new stadiums, some of which will be exclusive to the Pro Evolution Soccer series
- New licence with a new partnership
Now, about this “new license” business. Over the past few days rumours have been flying around (mostly thanks to WENB) that Konami will be teaming up with UEFA and have gained the exclusive licence to the Champions League. Call me a pessimist, but I just can’t get really excited about this news until I hear something concrete from Konami. I have thus far avoided mentioning the Champions League licence rumour here on the site as I don’t want anyone to be let down when Konami end up announcing that they have in fact sealed a new partnership with the Austrian 2nd Divison.
But, I guess it doesn’t harm us to dream. Running out at your clubs official stadium to the tune of the Champions League music for that crucial semi-final second leg. Could it be true?
Maybe Konami really have finally realised it’s now or never for the series, with FIFA 09 shaping up to one hell of an impressive title.

- Who cares about who they get on the cover?
They could put Alf Garnett on there for all I care.
- Stadiums - having 30+ stadiums is the minimum they should add
- licensing - who cares what licenses they get again?
if konami just gave us a proper editing facility, with official support for option file updates, then licensing will never be an issue again
next they’ll be telling us that teamvision has been improved…
maybe someone who has fifa should have a look at the champions league in fifa 08 but i vaguely remember when you play your champions league games it seemed unlicenced though i might be wrong.
If PES gets the Champions League licence, i mean, that would be fckin fantastic! But honestly from the news that is going round, Pro Evo is sounding like the BOMB!!!! then again it cud b all hype
we could only hope that the licence is for the Champions League, since that’s obviously a UEFA, the Cup as well then. I’ve just never been a huge fan of the Master League.
Get the gameplay correct , that is the important thing to do.
It is definitely right to get excited about pes 2009 NOW… Even if at the end of the day, the result is still not what we expected, we can still show appreciation for the developers’ effort. Making a game is really difficult, especially when its a yearly affair. When you look at MGS4 which is being developed for so many years that produced the recent masterpiece, pes is not granted that sort of time. We cannot wait so long for pes as it has become a tradition that we have it annually. Hence i feel that we need to get excited to get everyone geared up for another great addition to the series. Take it easy guys… FIFA, in my opinion is still nowhere near that godly gameplay level that pes provided us.
yea lets compare MGS4 to PES, u must be the brains of the operation.
look at how fifa has been improving every year, u cant possibly think that pes has been improving nearly as much. fifa went from being shit like 2 years ago, to be pretty equal last year, to probably beating pes this year (later in the fall).
ive read the things tat fifa has planned for fifa 09 and it sounds like it can really beat pes badly this year.
i just hope konami doesnt go easy on PES again but doing the little things instead of some massive changes tat it needs.
I agree with dougiedonut on the editing thing. I don’t really care about licenses, I want to be able to edit the game, I don’t want it to be done for me. One of the major problems with FIFA is the fact that they can design a player that looks nothing like the real life counterpart and there’s nothing you can do about it. I want to spend my first week with PES2009 tinkering, making the game my own.
i thawt that ea had the champs league coz they released the brand of games does this explain y ther hasnt bin 1 released this year? well like sum1 sed erlier all they need is a gd edit mode n they wont need 2 worry tht much bout licence’s
On a slightly different point. Sony are the official sponsor of the Champions League, so, is it possible that this has something to do with the rumour? If Konami do indeed have the license for the Champions League, could this end up being exclusive to the Sony consoles? As a 360 owner I would be slightly upset, but, it would certainly make me re-consider purchasing a PS3. I think a move like this would be slightly cynical on the part of Sony/Konami, but, I would have to admit, it would be a brilliant piece of business in capturing market share.
@ assache
Cynical???? LOL. And what has done EA all this years with their exclusive leagues…
I think i would be huge, since there are four teams from the premier league, plus the other two konami gets, that would make 6 official teams, and all the others teams that are on the league would be official too.
I know it’s a rumor, but it has a chance since Sony and Konami are real close in business relationships, the exclusive that they have with MGS4, and don’t forget that in the past years the Winning Eleven was only for the PlayStation, I would love to see only in PS3, maybe thats why it was so great, only working on one console, they had more time.
i think that in next pes you should be able to argue with players and refs decisions.
there should be blood scenes and brocken legs and also the spl league with licenced teams, players, strips and staduim names.
I really meant cynical in the fact to push more PS3s out of the door after previously going multi platform with PES on next gen. If you already own a PS3 then you would obviously be delighted that it was an exclusive because so far in the PS3 life cycle ‘exclusive’ has not exactly been a major unit seller has it! Not withstanding the excellent MGS4. Come on, I wish people read and understood posts before commenting. By the way, EA have always produced on multi platform, licenses had nothing to do with my previous post with regard to Sony/Konami etc.
That would be great for Konami, and I think Konami deserves something like that -because- PES has been keeping up with FIFA even though FIFA haves ALL the licenses.
I think it is about time someone haves the Official Champions League in the game -and- I think PES deserves it more than FIFA. And again, EA Sports had the License, and instead of including the Champions League in their FIFA Series -they- released 2 different games; “FIFA” and “UEFA Champions League”.
The fans who bought that “UEFA Champions League” game got seriously ripped off. It is only fair that if customers pay some 60$$ for FIFA or PES -then- it is only fair that at least one of the series includes the Champions League in it. I don’t think EA Sports would include the Champions League in their FIFA games, because we already saw what EA’s priority is -and- that is to release profitable games such as “FIFA” and “UEFA Champions League”.
On the other hand, I don’t think Konami would release “PES” and “UEFA Champions League” separately -and- this is why we customers would be better off if Konami gains the exclusive license to the Champions League. Who knows? Maybe we’ll see the 1st Football game with a Career Mode that includes the most prestigious CLUB Title in Europe; The UEFA Champions League.
If it’s all just a rumour, like most of the time.. Then it’s back to the old “WEFA Championship”.
By the way, I’m sure I’m speaking for some other fans here; We would appreciate it IF Konami can manage to edit the faces of the CLASSIC PLAYERS. It is seriously annoying to see that Peter Crouch haves his real-life face -while- Maradona haves some random face that looks nothing like Maradona’s real-face.
I don’t care if Maradona’s name is “Sharadona” in PES09 -however- I would really appreciate it if Maradona and Pele actually LOOKED like their real-life-selves. Maybe Konami cannot do this because of Licenses..
But if they can at least edit their faces -then- that would be a great addition to the game. I mean, Who wouldn’t like to play with the likes of; Maradona, Pele, Cruijff, Zidane, Beckenbauer, Romario, George Best, Valderrama, Baggio, etc, etc.. Who wouldn’t like to play with this CLASSIC PLAYERS in the Online Mode.
@ assache
And I would really like to see people think before writing none sense comments…

@R
Agreed!
As long as they sort out gameplay and the poor frame rate, i couldnt care if they had same licences as they do now. Obviously if they had extensive custom tools then i dont feel having every team badged up a big deal. I noticed that i could use the eye toy on pro evo 2008, i think this could be a bonus if they can incorporate this more within the game. I scanned in a couple of logos such as Nike and Adidas and they looked good until i realised i couldnt save them. Anything has got to be an improvement on the poor, rushed effort of last October! A total anti climax.
pes 2009 will be good but if they all the enlgish kits and leauges it would be so much better
PES IS GOING TO BE THE BEST !!!!!
Im not gonna get ahead of myself yet. I refuse to get to excited until i have seen a proper review or played a demo. I really do wanna be excited tho! but its hard after the disapointment of waiting outside sainsburys for nearly 2 hours until thay put pes2008 on the shelf and getting home putting it in my ps3 to realise the game is a pile of shite. I did try my best to like it, and even now i return to it and play it again trying to convince myself that its not thast bad when really it is. COME ON KONAMI, MAKE YOURSELVES PROUD!
I think everyone has good points in isolation. For way too fucking long EVERYONE has accepted sub-standard games from Konami and EA. PES is a far better product but has rested on its reputation for the last 2/3 releases and EA is basically still playing catchup. Here’s my view of what should change to make it better -
1. What I can never understand is why Career modes / Master League are so dull. Can you imagine being Avram Grant and achieving near perfection only to be sacked - the games should be like that - i.e. realistic. There should be funding constraints that means at certain clubs you get no choice about players being sold and that kind of thing. In short, there should be more dynamics between team management (the gaming experience) and club management (which cannot always be controlled). Good example of this is the position Rafa Benitez was in last season - good manager, trying to build a team but on the verge of being sacked all the time - wouldn’t it be great if the board were to tell you you’ve got 5 matches to save your job
2. Games don’t ebb and flow - I agree there should be a team moral bar on screen and individual and team performance should mirror that - no morale, passes are more prone to be wayward, so you’ve got to work your team into form. Morale should also reflect the game atmosphere -I.e. the crowd respond to how your teams play etc
3. AI is beoming a bit boring and simple to master after 10-15 games regardless of who you’re playing. I’d like to see more unpredictability and as per above team characteritistics defining how teams play. Opposition managers should change tactics, not just full on attack or full on defense.
4. licences - this is simply horse-shit on PRS. If PES can’t get them, allow full kit development so you can virtually re-create the kits etc. Can’t imagine this is hard to do, but makes the gaming experience so much more realistic, and why on earth are we stillplaying with merseyside red etc. The most watched league in the world dumbed down almost to the point where its just fucking annoying - because you almost feel compelled to sit for 4/5 hours editing teams before you play.
5. Grounds - there should be more, they should be realistic, you should be able to win the toss so you can play towards the Kop in the seond half - improves team morale etc and the grounds should reflect the type of ambience/atmosphere they create
6. Football sytles - why do spanish teams play like English teams. Its just never going to happen. This should be reflected in the gameplay. Imagine getting shat on by Real Madrid for 30 minutes, but getting a corner and scoring cos continental sides can’t defend set pieces - Cool.
7. Team set up. Why no-one has ever looked at this properly is beyond me. A formation is not a team setup / footprint for how you want you’r team to play. You should be able to go into detail about wanting side-backs to steam up the lines in support of the midfielders and actually overlap etc. Once you’ve created a team style, certain players may not fit into it in…..and so starts the team building process. This would keep me enthralled for ages.
8. Pitches, weather etc - they’re all like carpets. Why for example doesn’t the rain make the ball move more quickly, there’s never any wind, the pitches should cut up as the game goes on etc. They lack that realism we games should be expecting now.
9. Gamer realism - why can’t we smack someone, or take someone out with a macilious challenges, where are the elbows and cheeky little pulls, kicks etc - the gaming experience is all PC in this respect. The Refs should also have personailities - i.e. be cocks and book everyone, or let the game flow, so if you start hacking everyone down, maybe the ref lets its go etc
10. Passing/Shooting/Curl,Swerve etc. The basics, but why doesn’t a long ground pass have a gauge - does kaka always play passes with the same strength, same with the throughball, and why oh fucking why did games 15 years ago (kick off 2) have a much more relaisitc appreciation of how to swerve/curl the ball.
Don’t get me wrong - i dig PES but we’ve all shelled out for next generation consoles - its about time the games started reflecting actual possibilities and the above are not unreachable
Happy to hear comments/insults of the above
Kav
I think this guy shud work for Konami! We want a football fans game, a proper game for the fans. I totally agree with everything. I believe a manager mode would be a very good edition, or have a board during master league. Lets take realism to the next level. Pro needs to be 1 step ahead of fifa.
Is it time to get excited about PES 2009?
No. Especially if you’re in North America. It’s eight months away on this side of the pond… and unless the problems from 2008 are fixed and it’s worth playing on next-gen, then I’m staying with the PS2 and WE:PES 2007.
I’m actually more interested to see if there will be new OFs for the 08/09 season available for WE:PES 2007 (PES 6) on PS2. I was able to play this past season’s rosters without rushing out to buy a new game… it might be too much to hope for to get another year out of the “warhorse” PS2, but if it’s editable, then giddyup…
maybe it is time to get excited unless it is like the last game.pes 2008 biggest let down of all it was shite
sounds good, but one day konami have to licence the premier league come on its one of the best leagues in the world , but hearing that konami might get license for champions league would be a step further to maybe more licenses to the game in further years
