Konami and the Champions League licence

So, as I have already made perfectly clear… PESGaming does not report rumour. I hate them, I always have. That said, I did briefly mention something which has been circulating of late in yesterdays article regarding the recent trade show in France.

The Rumour: PES 2009 has acquired the Champions League licence.

I have since been hunting high and low for answers. Well - not that high, or low, but certainly been speaking to the right people and can now bring you…

The Truth: Konami have acquired the Champions League licence.

Double check those two sentences incase you think I just typed the same thing twice. All week we have been hearing that PES 2009 will have the Champions League licence. This is not true - or, at least, this is entirely unconfirmed. What I can now confirm to you, though, is that Konami have indeed acquired the licence.

What does this all mean? Basically that Konami now have the rights to the Champions League, but whether or not they include it in PES 2009 is a whole different question. Surely it would have been mentioned at the trade show if indeed Pro Evolution Soccer was to include it this year? It wouldn’t make sense not to inform the people who will be distributing the game of such a huge fact. All they ended up saying was that they had a new licence which would have a major impact. Like I said yesterday, Konami’s definition of a major impact is likely to be very different to yours or mine.

It turns out that Konami may well be releasing a SEPERATE game altogether, exactly as EA did when they have the licence. It’s believed UEFA are pushing hard for this and I can’t see Konami refusing. After all, it would be a huge money spinner for the company.

You may well notice that there are no direct quotes from any individuals in this article… this is purely as a protection of sources and I would like to remind you that you are reading a website that does not report rumour. It is still possible that PES 2009 will feature the Champions League, but with UEFA pressing hard for a standalone game and the financial benefits of a second game clear, I just find it very unlikely that we’ll be playing it in PES 2009.

With that said, all is left to do is for you to air your views in the comments…

After all the problems in the last game, didn’t Seabas come out and say one of the reasons for it not being up to the usual standard was because they had to release the game on so many different formats. I know this isn’t confirmed yet, but if it is true, surely having to create 2 games will cause even more strain on the development team. Will we see more unfinished products like PES 2008?!?!?! I am concerned. Just concentrate on PES 2009, license or no license.

i think that if they only use the champions league licensing for a seperate game, that it is still a huge disaapointment for pes fans, and the huge impact that konami had mentioned would be such a huge impact, which is y i think that the license will be included in pes 2009

  6. tommo Says:

to be perfectly honest, whether its in 2 seperate games, or as most ppl hope included in pes 2009, being able to play an authentic game, with no “man red” or “london FC” will be fantastic.
granted most teams in the champions league are included in PES anyway, playing a fully licensed, authentic game will go down well with whoever is playing the game, and i personally cant f***ing wait for it :)

  7. Red Says:

How about same game different name!

  8. Amateur Says:

I hope UEFA understand that they are NOT getting any money from me!!!

This is very disrespectful towards the fans of PES, we pay 60 bucks for every game -and- it is about time for the game to include the most important competition in Europe; The UEFA Champions League.

That said, This is another rip off, once again showind where priorities lay. Konami is giving me another GOOD reason to dump the PES series altogether this year.

  9. pesFannnn Says:

pls do not develop a separate game pls!!! incorporate the champs league into the master league with itself being another additional mode in the game. no one will buy the separate game after all…

  10. Steve76000 Says:

Come on, Konami. Don’t waste this licence by releasing a spin-off that will do nothing but interfere with the development of PES 09.

  11. Amateur Says:

The main thing that sucks about this, is that Konami really haves no power to decide what to do with the “UEFA Champions League”.

It is logical that Sony wants Konami to release a game specifically about the UEFA Champions League. This way, the PS3, PS2, and PSP will have an exclusive game -and- that would be very profitable for Sony (and also UEFA).

It is disappointing and unfortunate that once again PROFITABILITY screws things for the fans. Most PES Fans will be extremely disappointed with the fact that Konami will have to release 2 different games; “PES” and “UEFA Champions League”.

With the importance of profitability today.. I don’t think we’ll see either FIFA or PES including the Official Champions League into their series.

“What’s the point of including all the Top Leagues in Europe -if- you don’t even have the most important competition in European Football.”

I know, this sucks.. We’ll have to play the old “WEFA Championship” for years to come.

  12. Amateur Says:

You know, there’s always the possibility that Sony and Konami can agree on including the UEFA Champions League ONLY in the PES versions for PS3.

That would be very profitable for Sony, as well as it would please millions of fans worldwide. The issue with such a deal is that it isn’t the most profitable proposition for UEFA.

Although, I do think this would be more profitable than a spin-off game about the “UEFA Champions League”. Only fools buy such games.. Same games with Different Titles; “PES” and “UEFA Champions League” -a- great way to waste 100 bucks.

By the way, some FIFA fans might even switch to PES because of that. That License can work wonders for Konami if used wisely -So- let’s see if they can make the best out of that License.

  13. Chris27 Says:

AT first when i logged onto pesgaming today and seen the words “UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE” I wet myself in excitement and then started to run around the room. but after a bit of time to think about it im undecided if its a pro or a con for the series.

Things that may happen or not,

The game will have a option on the main menu to play ony UEFA Champions League

Master League will also include a Uefa champions League.

Master League will have a more professional feel. More depth, More control of the club. Heading more towards a manager game but not over the top.

The premiership teams will be liceinced that have qualifyed for the next seasons Uefa Champs.

Does Uefa coming on board mean we will have a Uefa Cup aswell? Would be nice

Master league transfer deals and contracts will be in EUROS.

Winning away in the champions League will be alot harder, like in real life

The Champions league will be the hardest games you will play.

A seperate game – Bad news, for us the consumers and for Konami loosing millions in a dud game. (i play the series for its master league then gameplay. so Champions league would be a cherry on the top if it made it into the pes 2009 game and not a spin off series.)

Konami wasting there time on producing a dud that wont sell.

Wasting money and focus on uefa and not on updating Pes 2009 game. We could see another 5 years of the same game with little to none improvements.

They will loose millions to fifa 09. The one thing that anoyed me and many others about fifa was its lack of response in gameplay. Guess what the fifa series has addressed this season YEP more responsive controls and realism.

    Uefa Online Play

This is the make or break game FOR konami.

  14. Anonymous Says:

If Konami do release a seperate UEFA game, doesn’t that mean that they will lock down lots of the editing features on PES2009, or else people will just make another Champs league patch that would render the seperate UEFA game useless.

  15. PESORIGINAl Says:

If Konami put the champions league in pes 2009 they will make millons of profit and fifa fans will turn into pes fans konami and sony have to realize what they are doing come on konami and sony just put champions league in pes 2009 plz i beg for you to do it i don’t want to waste money on buying 2 seprate games.

  16. ramaxwy Says:

well said anonymous and that’s my biggest fear too; that they will lock down alot of editing options if they decide to release two seperate games and believe me i am trying to be optimistic about this but it sounds much more logical when u think about the profits they are about to gain when they do that.
konami also doesn’t have the personnel to release another game with special features and different gameplay in one year ( if EA couldn’t pull it off i don’t think KONAMI can )so if they release a seperate game with the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE license they will make it impossible for u to edit PES 2009 in such a way that buying the second game would be a waste and that is bad for us.
what i also like to know is what the that license specifically means, does it mean that they also have all the teams even those who play in the qualifiers for the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE or only those who finally qualify for the CHAMPIONS LEAGUE itself. what about the UEFA CUP teams are they licensed too because that would mean alot of licensed teams.
if someone knows the answers to those questions then please i am all ears.
that said i am still very happy with the news because we all wanted this ( the licensed teams) because editing a few teams u like that aren’t in the game but which u like and support is great but most important european teams just have to be licensed the only problem is we didn’t inspect it would happen in this way.
let’s hope KONAMI proves us all wrong and thinks uf us first and not the profits and pressures from SONY and the UEFA. ( although i boubt that will be the case )

  17. Amateur Says:

ramaxwy–The best we (the consumers) can do is NOT buy under any circumstances a spin-off game of The “UEFA Champions League”.

If many fans buy BOTH; “PES” and “UEFA Champions League” -then- that will give a good reason to Konami to do it again in 2010. We must not give Konami any reason to do such an outrageous thing TWICE.

If Konami do releases 2 different games -then- I’m all ears for the Champions League patches, let’s make that UEFA game useless.

If Konami doesn’t wants to hears what the FANS WANT -then- let’s make them regret it.

  19. Anonymous Says:

If it was incorporated to Master League and Man Blue finished in a qualifying position this would then knock out a licensed team for the following seasons Champions League. The only way to incorporate fully is to have licenses for all teams which won’t happen. So, this will be either a Stand alone game or a game mode on the menu screens which UEFA will not accept.

  20. Some Guy Says:

UEFA can suck my balls. I also don’t give a fuck if they add the Champions League To the game as I play PES on the PC. So modifying it will be relatively easy.

  24. MagicaRoma Says:

What’s true about the rumour that Konami has lost the La Liga licence? It’s all nice to have the CL, but with only the Dutch, Italian & French league left it starts to look sadder and sadder…..Especially if the CL will be in a seperate game, as then PES2009 would only have 3 licenced competitions!
So, is it true, no La Liga?

  25. Amateur Says:

If that is true -then- EA Sports has really taken cheap shot on Konami.

I still cannot understand why Licenses can’t be shared. But anyways, hope that isn’t true because if it is PES09 will NEED to have an incredible Editing Mode.

And yes, 3 Licensed Leagues look very bad.

  26. Billy Says:

its not true about the separate game thing, at least not this year. after last years poor effort and bad reception from the public konami have been focusing on making pes2009 really good. i dont think they have the numbers or time to make a whole separate game without seriously compromising pes 2009 which they just cant do

    Unbelievable - very disappointing

  31. Simon McDermott Says:

It would be very disappointing if Konami don’t include the champions league in pes 2009.
I think it would be very foolish if they tried to cash in on two separate title’s E.A style.
The main difference between E.A and Konami,is that we expect this kind of underhand profiteering from E.A, and surely they realise they would actually loose a lot of fans if they began acting in a similar manner.
Pes fans are a whole different breed to the, donkey chasing the carrot on a string, mentality of Fifa zombies.
This news will obviously have pissed E.A off, because they won’t be able to include the competition in Fifa o9 haha.

I think the best thing for both Fifa and Pes, would be to stop preventing each other having licence’s, and to make it a level playing field.
Why don’t they say right you buy into our license, we’ll buy into yours and let the best game win.
I think this would be the best thing for football fans every where, because at the end of the day we just want to play a game which, simulates real life football, and if you can play using real life teams, and players that makes the game all the more exciting.
So what is E.A so afraid of? are they scared that if they don’t have this unfair strangle hold of official licensing over Pes,that they would get their arse kicked!!!
Well maybe now Pes has a worth while licence at long last,we may start to see the playing field level out.
On the other hand we will probably see E.A become all the more insidious in their tactics of denying other games licences.

  32. Amateur Says:

Completely agree with McDermott.. Why can’t they share the Licenses?? This is yet again another thing that characterizes FIFA, they release all kinds of profitable spin-offs, and they also own all the Important Licenses.

Those Licenses are the thing that secures some 50% of their fans -and- it is the sole reason FIFA is still selling today.

I have always thought it was a cheap shot from EA Sports -because- regardless of how good the game actually was, they always had plenty of buyers because they had all the Official Licenses.

EA had it EASY, they where competing against a Football Series with no EPL License, no Bundesliga, and poor graphics.

At least, PES and FIFA are now on par “Graphically” -and- I can only hope a better agreement on the Licenses can be reached on the near future.

The best agreement for all involved would be if EA Sports and Konami share the Licenses -and- let the best game win.

  34. Slug Pellet Says:

Us fans plough so much cash into these games that it really is about time Konami parted with some serious coin and grabbed an official license, END OF! The true fans will except nothing less this year. If the shit hits the fan on pes 2009 then we should all boycott the series and dig out our Amigas and play some sensi! You watch Konami’s reaction when the fans stops buying. It really is quite simple. GIVE THE FANS WHAT THEY WANT CAUSE WE KEEP YOUR COMPANY TICKING OVER EACH YEAR!
