Introduction

Hey guys. Seeing as Dan publishes his weekly column, ‘Interfering With Play’ on Tuesdays, I’m going to start posting a weekly blog on Friday evenings so as not to ‘piss on his bonfire.’ I always look forward to Dan’s IWP come Tuesday, and I hope that eventually people can start looking forward to Friday evenings too! My name is Francis, I’m 20 years old and a lifelong Liverpool fan. I also do games testing once or twice a week for Microsoft/Xbox, so I’m waiting on the call to go and test PES ‘09!

I’m one of the five new bloggers, and along with Krishna, paulc, Steve from Stoke and dougiedonut, I hope we can raise a few more issues, and share opinions and views in a friendly and well-mannered environment!

Love of the game

I’ve always loved ‘PES’. Ever since Pro Evolution Soccer 1 came out on the PS2, I’ve been hooked! I still remember having that red and grey case sitting next to the console. Unfortunately I only ever saw the disc a couple of times; the first being when I put it in my PS2, and the second, when it got replaced with Pro Evolution Soccer 2! Since then, the gaming world and indeed Pro Evo itself have undergone large changes. Back then I’d dream of the day I could just turn the console on and play against someone from America! Unfortunately because I own an Xbox 360, that dream is yet to become reality…

I am a fan of PES ’08, and I do still play it regularly. For me the pace is not too fast, and the only things that trouble me are the free kicks, and the online lag which is just incredibly frustrating! In my opinion, it was a big step up from PES6 simply because of the power of the next generation consoles.

The Big Question

My big question this week is what would we, as PES fans, look for in the ultimate Pro Evo? Would it be an exact, lifelike replication of live football? For me, possibly. But if a completely realistic football game was released, would it be too slow paced? Would 70% of ten minute games end up 0-0? This leads onto the question of how realistic a game can get? I believe that in ten or fifteen years, games will be so unbelievably lifelike to the point that one wouldn’t be able to tell if they were watching a real football match, or a computerised one.

It’s a fair Kop

As I’ve mentioned, I’m a Liverpool fan. And a hugely frustrated one at that. We just can’t seem to consistently win the ‘smaller games,’ which I believe is the difference between being Premiership Champions, and third or fourth place.

The crisis at Anfield is one I’m sure most of you have read about in the papers or on the internet. Our American owners just don’t seem to be able to let Benitez do his job; they said Gareth Barry was too expensive, and then offer Benitez the same amount of money to make a bid for David Silva! But who can blame their misplaced faith? The squad rotation system obviously hasn’t been working, and Benitez seems to be the only one who can’t see this. I apologise for going off on one, but I truly believe that this season we have the strongest squad for at least ten years, and it seems as if somehow, come the end of this season, we again will be going for that elusive runners up spot!

That’s all for this Friday. I didn’t want to write too much with all the PES news, screenshots and everyone looking forward to an ‘official news release’ on Wednesday, but I’ll get my brother to upload my blog for me next Friday as I’ll be at Reading Festival! If people like, they can email me at francis_newall@hotmail.co.uk and comments on your preferences to what I talk about, whether you liked it, or just general comments on the article, are all very welcome.

Thanks,

-Francis

i think the bigest imrovement pro evolution can do interms of master leauge would be introduce the roaming of one club to another like the sensible soccer had where u would get offers from other clubs to sign you as the new manager of that club thats considering how well u done with your existing team that would really be going to the next level with pro evolution plus it will give that infinate durability.
it will basically make the managment side so much more challenging and fun and if they want to go even further then have offers coming from international level as well.
that will make the game out of this world it will really revolutionalize the game totally.
at the moment all i see the game designers doing is just tweaking up every new edition which is good but nothing major.

Hello and looking forward to reading the blogs.

The latest news has inspired some confidence with regards to PES 09.

Fellow red here, looking forward to the new season and heading down to Anfield next week vs ‘Boro.

    Cheers, YNWA.

Apologies for the length of my post but as a Gillingham fan I know exactly how you’re feeling - We too keep losing to the smaller teams, have our strongest squad ever and can’t decide which £20m player to buy next. Oh yeah, did I mention the fact we had been in two Champions League finals in the last 5 years (having won one of them)?? Oh sorry……am I dreaming again!?!

Everyone out there complaining about their top four clubs and even the Tottenham fans (Yes you will be top 4 this year hopefully!) spare a thought for us lower division supporters out there. Our teams won’t be out there playing against the likes of Real Madrid or AC Milan or even the dizzy heights of Standard Liege! Hell, we won’t even be challenging for the domestic league (or cup for that matter considering we lost this week in the 1st round!). We don’t have rotation policies (although I do always take my boots down on the off chance when I go and watch).

Nope, we are a club in trouble. £14m in debt last year until the chairman’s own business convieniently bought our ground for £9m, just in case the club goes under and he wants to sell it for a new housing development for a fat profit! On top of this, we can only afford to buy non-league players now or really sh*te ones and we lose all of our best. Our crowd will be below 4,500 this year and our biggest highlight will be the fact we can’t realistically get relegated thanks to the other clubs starting on negative points. That is until we too fall into administration!!

Some might be saying “why do you bother supporting them?” and it would be a good question but having been a lifelong fan - remembering the highlights of previous years (1999 playoff final defeat to Man City and the ref, scoring twice at both Arsenal and Chelsea in the cup but conceding 5 in response) it is what real football is all about.

As a challenge to all the sub 20yr olds out there, who support the top 4 and who are reading this (I am 27 by the way) as an experiment I think you should choose 1 lower division team to follow as well this year. Someone from Leagues 1 or 2 and see what real frustration, despair and ultimately the one highlight of a season is truely about.

There’s only one mighty blues - “none likes us (especially ITV) but we don’t care” We are Gillingham, Super Gillingham…..

p.s. I’m starting to think with the length of my posts maybe I should have asked to be one of the new bloggers!!

Hey if anyone is out there reading this I’d be interested if there’s still room! ;)

  7. goalgerd Says:

ultimate pes is simple, pes game engine on top of swos databse with swos manager mode

  8. itsme Says:

im a Intermilan fan…..they need to start doing good in the CL….i think they will again win the SERIA A and im pretty sure they will do well in the CL this year….zlatan looks as though hes 100%…..as far as PES 2008 goes…i love that game i play it all the time but i do look forward to PES 2009 with all this new info out

  9. Mr. Valentino Says:

I’m A US Palermo Fan probably most of you dont know that team very well but it isn’t the best but it keeps winning enough to end in 10th position or sumthing like that. But I like Inter milano and As Roma also just because those are better , hehe.

    Ciao raggazzi

  10. Simon McDermott Says:

Gotta agree with Goalgerd and Anonymous.
I’ve been harping on for some time now about the manager elements of the game, job offers international managers job’s included ect. I was waiting for this to be included as far back as Pes 2 and yet here we are at the dawn of Pes 2009 and it’s still not included.
I was also a massive fan of the swos series all those years ago, which had all of these options as I’m sure some of you still remember. I just can’t believe we’ve had to wait so long for it to start being included in games again.
I think stupid licensing laws and E.A sports have had alot to do with this, making it difficult for other games to implement this idea because no one wants a global database of players with made up manes.

  11. Simon McDermott Says:

Great post Francis by the way. It’s good to see some more bloggers on here to bring up more subjects to talk about.
I would have applied for a position myself if i had more time.

  12. Simon McDermott Says:

That should be names not manes by the way.

  13. john4 Says:

nice start. about liverpool though, they will never win the premiership signing random unknown players such as Palletta who has since left, Skertal, Lucas (who i think is rather good) these are just random signings you would never see man u, arsenal or chelski make and thats the difference. for example would any of the top 3 have signed Pennant or Benayoun?(i know he was at arsenal but from beena youth) i think not, now he did well last season and i have nothing against him but these signings just arent enough, Gerrard and Torres cant win the league on their own, specially with the crappy rotatation. in fact im a fan of the rotation system just not Rafas!if he played a solid core and rotated around that he may slowly get somewhere.

    anyways nice article

  14. Rossco Mcqueen Says:

if this is going to be about how good liverpool are every friday with this ‘in the red’ bull **** then not every one is going to look forward to reading it. sorry to burst ur bubble but everyone in the world doesnt support liverpool. no offence to pool fans!
    bring on IWP!

  15. Trystan Davies Says:

Great post by “mn9ajas”, i support Wrexham so i know how you feel…. the passion of football eh? what other sport would you support and follow a team (every week) in what is essentially the 5th division of its domestic league structure?? maybe tiddlywinks but thats about it!

  16. Steve Says:

I posted this as a comment on another thread, but thought it might be good to add to another, as some of my ideas seem to have not been discussed before (apologies if they have, I;m fairly new around here).

Best thing that can be added to pro evo would be to allow you to make preset positionings for set pieces. This would enable you to know where runs into the box would be coming from, where dummy runs were going e.t.c. I think this would make for a fantastic development of the series.
Also quick throw ins, so the nearest player to the ball picks it up, and you can thow if you want (maybe not as accurate unless it happens to be a regular thrower) or just let the player wait and give the ball to a regular throw in taker.
It would be great to have more managerial aspects to the game, dictating which players make forward runs, who stays back, whether players make wide or narrow runs e.t.c.
    Oh, one more thing.

ONLINE MASTER LEAGUE - would be amazing, like pro evo mixed with football manager Live (I’m beta testing for FML, and its a great concept, just imagine that mixed with PES, amazing!)

  17. Amateur Says:

I have to disagree with Francis.. PES08 was bad and unfinished, even Seabass himself has hinted that more than once. There’s no way PES08 was better than PES6, there’s no way that Arcade game is better than PES6.

I think some Fans tried to like PES08 so much, that they actually ended up liking it.. In my opinion, you have to dig too deep to like PES08 -whereas- PES6 is so enjoyable and addictive that you like it right away.

Anyways, I suppose PES09 will be what “PES08 should have been”.

  18. MS777 Says:

Anonymous, best replay ever, Im 100% with you on this one!!

  19. itsme Says:

No amatuer just because you dont like the game doesnt mean everyone else doesnt….you prolly suck at it so thats why you try to say this version sucks…….i know it has flaws but it is STILL the best available soccer game on the market……btw me and my freind just played with Portugal vs Brazil and the game ended in a tie with us having to go to PK’s….***Brazil and Portugal*** both one of the best offensive teams in the game and yet we didnt score thats because we know hwo to shut down the ROnaldos and ronaldinhos….maybe you dont and thats why you hate PES 2008

  20. Amateur Says:

Or maybe it should be EASIER to Defend -just- like it is so EASY to Attack.. Haven’t you hear the critics?? I’m NOT the only one who has criticized the game.

Even if you can Defend Effectively in PES08, it is still poorly done; you have to run too much, there’s not that much running in Real Life Defending.

And then, there’s also the poor Movements of the players, the players feel like they are running on a rail.. it feels so Arcadish. That Feeling from past versions is nowhere to be found, Skill is nowhere to be found -Whereas- “Pace” and “Shooting Power” are extremely Overrated.

And by the way, I didn’t suck at it, I just got bored of it extremely quickly. It is a hugely repetitive, predictable, boring Football Sim.. Why waist my Time playing that **** when I have PES6??

  21. itsme Says:

ur not the only that doesnt like it but there are many of us who do like the game alot so just shut up about it man…..PES 2008 is far from GREAT but its still the best soccer title available…..pes 2009 will be great no doubt but for now PES 2008 will do for many of us……

  22. Franny Says:

john4 man united signed vidic who nobody had heard of and chelsea signed ivanovic who nobody heard of and he hasnt played even.skrtel is a class act just as good as vidic
